  I need your help. We have to sell MMORPG at an advanced stage. The game has a unique engine, written on the need for the game, graphics, sound, map editor, web site etc. As it happens in the play mmorpg we can develop the characters, monsters. We can fight with other characters or to establish cooperation in solving the challenges. We can fight using own monsters, or throwing their own cards with spells. • What Are Some Advantages/Disadvantages of Using C over Assembly?

  I'm currently studying engineering in Telecommunications and Electronics and we have migrated from assembler to C in microprocessor programming. I have doubts that this is a good idea. What are some advantages and disadvantages of C compared to assembly? The advantages/disadvantages I see are: Advantages: I can tell that C syntax is a lot easier to learn than Assembler syntax. C is easier to use for making more complex programs. Learning C is somehow more productive than learning assembler cause there is more developing stuff around C than Assembler. Disadvantages: Assembler is a lower level programming language than C,so this makes it a good for programming directly to hardware. Is a lot more flexible alluding you to work with memory,interrupts,micro-registers,etc.

• How much is modern programming still tied to underyling digital logic?

  First of all: I've got no academic background. I'm working primarily with Java and Spring and I'm also fond of web programming and relational databases. I hope I'm using the right terms and I hope that this vague question makes some sense. Today the following question came to my mind: How much is modern programming still tied to the underlying digital logic? With modern programming I mean concepts like OOP, AOP, Java 7, AJAX, … I hope you get the idea. Do they no longer need the digital logic with which computers are working internally? Or is binary logic still ubiquitous when programming this way? If I'd change the inner workings of a computer overnight, would it matter, because my programming techniques are already that abstract? P. S.: With digital logic I mean the physical representation of everything "inside" the computer as zeroes and ones. Changed "binary" to "digital".

• Proposal for a new position at work

  I have an idea at work for a new Product Manager position at our office. I work with several developers, and it would be helpful to have someone working in a type of "Scrum Master" capacity, dividing out assignments and making sure they get complete. This position does not currently exist, however I feel that I have enough evidence to indicate that it be very helpful for our business. What is the best way to present this proposal to my boss? Is there a specific template that you know of for new position? It should be able to describe the qualification for the position, their responsibilities, and what metrics we would use to measure them. Thanks. • Applications affected by memory performance

  I'm writing a paper on the topic of applications affected more by memory performance than processor performance. I've got a lot written regarding the gap between the two, however I can't seem to find anything about the applications that might be affected more by memory performance than by processor speed. I suppose these are applications that make a large amount of memory references, but I have no idea what kind of applications would make such large number of references to make it stand out? Perhaps databases? Can you please give me any pointers on how to proceed, some links to papers? I'm really stuck.

• What datastructure would you use for a collision-detection in a tilemap?

  Currently I save those blocks in my map that could be colliding with the player in a HashMap (Vector2, Block). So the Vector2 represents the coordinates of the blog. Whenever the player moves I then iterate over all these Blocks (that are in a specific range around the player) and check if a collision happened. This was my first rough idea on how to implement the collision-detection. Currently if the player moves I put more and more blocks in the HashMap until a specific "upper bound", then I clear it and start over. I was fully aware that it was not the brightest solution for the problem, but as said, it was a rough first implementation (I'm still learning a lot about game-design and the data-structure). What data-structure would you use to save the Blocks? I thought about a Queue or even a Stack, but I'm not sure, hence I ask.

• Can't use PHP extension Mcrypt in Ubuntu 13.10 (Nginx, PHP-FPM)

  I installed a fresh Ubuntu 13.10 on my laptop. Like I usually do, I install the packages I need for Web development, which are nginx, php5-fpm, mysql, php5-mysql, php5-mcrypt and a few others. After editing some configuration files, this usually works. But today, since 13.10, an error appears instead of the Web page I expected. Laravel requires the Mcrypt PHP extension. The package php5-mcrypt has been installed and reinstalled. The command php -m doesn't seem to show mcrypt. Any idea where the problem could come from? I've done this setup many times and it always worked.

  I am very inspired by websites like imgur, dropbox, screencloud, maybe w3schools...you get my point. Fresh web-services with some new idea, not big portals but something simple yet useful and used by many people, something simple and new. What aspects of my developer career should I focus to be able to build such things on my own if I have enough ideas? (Sure if it ends up being popular I can get more developers to help me and so on, but at first I can do it alone, right?) I am currently a PHP web-developer, I know HTML+CSS+JS+AJAX+JQuery. But even like that there still is web-design, there are a lot of paths: websites for enterprise, startups, webservices, entertainment websites and serious bank/document flow systems, frameworks used for big systems, different approaches for little ones, etcetcetc. Which path should I take to be able to start my own projects like the ones that I listed on top which inspire me?

  I would like to design a web app that functions as a simple thesaurus: a long list of words with attributes, all of which are linked to each other. This thesaurus data model can be defined as: a controlled vocabulary arranged in a known order in which equivalence, hierarchical, and associative relationships among terms are clearly displayed and identified by standardized relationship indicators. My idea so far is to have one database in which every word is a table, and every table contains all words related to that word. e.g. Thesaurus(database) - happy(table) - excited(row)|cheerful(row)|lively(row) Is there are more efficient way to store words and their relationship to other words in a relational SQL database?

• Using a SMTP Service for email

  This may be a horribly obvious question, but I'm learning and just need someone to confirm it for me. I putting together a private social network that needs to email their members (through the social network software, Elgg) regularly. I'm hosting it on a shared HostGator plan (because they won't receive much traffic) and they'll email 10-1000 emails a few times a week. HostGator restricts you to 500 per hour. I'm also worried about deliverability. I've been searching up and down about how to throttle the emails so it will all send reliably... but then I came across the idea of an outside SMTP relay service. Would using an SMTP service resolve this issue? If so, any opinions on quality SMTP services?

• How does the web server choose between unicode and utf-8 for accented characters?

  I have a web server with my ISP which replaces accented characters in URLs with their unicode values: for instance é (eacute) is translated to %e9 (dec 233). For testing locally I use EasyPHP which translates those characters by their utf-8 equivalence: é is then replaced by the well known sequence %c3%a9 (é)... Browsers served by EasyPHP don't decode unicode values but they do if running locally (utf-8 and non converted accent also)... I have been unable to find where this behavior is configured in the server. This is a problem as some urls are built by my application using the php rawurlencode() which seems to always encode with unicode values on both servers. Any idea?

• Triple monitor setup with an ATI Radeon 4200?

  I have a relatively new Powerspec computer (i5 quad core processor, about a year or two old) and just grabbed a new relatively inexpensive ($40?) graphics card. It has 1 DVI, one VGA, and one HDMI output. I have two (different type) monitors plugged into the DVI and VGA slots, and they work great. However, I cannot seem to be able to get a third monitor in the HDMI slot to work. I can see the monitor (and monitor info) show up in display settings. However, if I try to switch the monitor to 'on' and click apply, nothing happens. Anyone have the slightest idea what the problem might be? (It's a Radeon graphics card FYI; if I remember right I think it was the Radeon 4200?)

• How to explain to a layperson the variance in programmer rates?

  I recently talked to a guy that is looking for developers to build a product idea. He mentioned he has received interest from people but the rates have varied from $20-120/hr. This project he estimates should take 3-6 months and since he is non-technical, he is confused why there can be so much variance. I understand how I would choose someone but I am a developer and can gauge other people's work. How can I explain to him (in a non-biased way, if possible, as I will apply as well) about the variance in rates? Is there any good analogy that would help?

  I am having a design problem in test automation:- Requirements - Need to test different servers (using unix console and not GUI) through automation framework. Tests which I'm going to run - Unit, System, Integration Question: While designing a test case, I am thinking that a Test Case should be a part of a test suite (test suite is a class), just as we have in Python's pyunit framework. But, should we keep test cases as functions for a scalable automation framework or should be keep test cases as separate classes(each having their own setup, run and teardown methods) ? From automation perspective, Is the idea of having a test case as a class more scalable, maintainable or as a function?

• Failed update of Ubuntu 10.10 results in unbootable system

  Hi, yesterday I performed an automatic security update suggested by the update manager on my virtualized (with VirtualBox on a Windows 7 host) Ubuntu 10.10 installation. The update somehow failed and left me with an unbootable system. When I try to boot, I am told that various folders, files, and what not are missing. Then the system drops into a busybox and leaves me with an (initramfs) prompt. This happens with all kernels I get offered by GRUB, although the error messages are quite different from kernel to kernel. Well, the short of it is this: I don't have the slightest idea on how to get back to a working system and this site is the final straw I'm willing to grab. A complete disaster like this following an update initiated and executed by the system is unheard of in Windows-land; at least I haven't heard of it, yet, and therefore I am going to abandon Ubuntu and Linux altogeteher, if there is no remedy. System Ubuntu 12.10, kernel Linux 3.5.0-17-generic step what i do: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia restart system optirun glxgears This message give me: Cannot access secondary GPU - error: Could not load GPU driver Aborting because fallback start is disabled. Open sudo gedit /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf and change Driver= to Driver=nvidia and KernelDriver=nvidia-current to KernelDriver=nvidia. Restart the system and run optirun glxgears. This message gives me: The Bumblebee daemon has not been started yet or the socket path /var/run/bumblebee.socket was incorrect. Could not connect to bumblebee daemon - is it running? Anybody have idea?!

• Getting rid of getting stuck often [closed]

  I have been working with C# and .NET for around 2-3 years. But, still i get stuck too often. My project includes few simple websites(asp.net) in the early parts and then a desktop application for cotton transaction management(wpf). And right now, I am building a price compare website (asp.net MVC). Along the lines, I have read quite few books on C# and .NET, but still I get stuck very often. What pisses me is that the problems I get stuck in aren't very typical or hard. You can get a better idea by visiting my questions page on SO. After looking at my question lists, do you also feel that my basis or knowledge as a programmer are weak ? If so, How can i find a remedy to this problem ? • How to use Mercurial's LargeFiles extension? [migrated]

  I use Mercurial for game development, and I'm trying to use the LargeFiles extension included in Mercurial 2.0 to keep track of large binary assets. Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot of documentation on the extension, so I'm not sure how people are expected to use it. For example, is there any way to safely clean out the .hg/largefiles directory? If I'm on the tip revision, and expect to always have internet access, then I don't need the old versions of largefiles cluttering up the repository, since that's the whole point of using the LargeFiles extension. Also, how do I have more fine-grained control over where the largefile store is? I can only assume that it's created somewhere on the computer that ran hg init, but I have no idea about the details.
