  Hello, I have some users setup in a MySQL table with different variables. I am trying to figure out what would be the best way to do this. Basically I want to award all of my registered and active users with bids which are stored in another table. So for the Table "users" I have ran this query: SELECT * FROM users WHERE active = 1 AND admin = 0 ORDER BY users.id ASC Which will show all active users who are not administrators. Now I would like to give each one of these users which are identified by the "ID" field in another table. So in the "bids" table I would need to add a new row for each one of those users with all of the same values except for the "user_id" field which will basically match the "id" field of the table "users" What would be the best approach for this. There are approximately 6,000+ users coming up in the first query. Please be gentle as I am not a programmer. Just need some friendly advice.

  Hi everyone. I am trying to run the following simple query on a table with 500K records. SELECT COUNT(*) AS impressionCount FROM impression WHERE 0 = 0 AND impressionObjectId1 = 'C69A54B8-B828-E2E4-2319A93011DF4120' AND impressionObjectId2 = '1'; This query is taking 10 seconds to run. I have tried creating individual indexes for the impressionObjectId1 and impressionObjectId2 columns, as well as a composite index using both. The composite worked well for a while, but now it is also slow. When I make the values comma separated it throws an SQL error saying the sub query can return only one value. Is there anything else I can do to avoid running multiple sub queries? • How to make shell output redirect (>) write while script is still running?

  I wrote a short script that never terminates. This script continuously generates output that I have to check on every now and then. I'm running it on a lab computer through SSH, and redirecting the output to a file in my public_html folder on that machine. python script.py > ~/public_html/results.txt However, the results don't show up immediately when I refresh the address. The results show up when I terminate the program, but as I said, it doesn't halt by itself. Is that redirect (>) being lazy with with writing? Is there a way to continuously (or with an interval) update the results in the file? Or is it the webserver that doesn't update the file while it is still being written?

  I have a table that every request to the server, stores on it. For each request I will check that it is banned or not. For example it is a query: select * from requests where request_sessID = '4bc0331d983000902b4718c80f12e9b3' AND request_time > (UNIX_TIMESTAMP() - 3600) AND request_isEnable = 1 I also set the engine from InnoDB to MyISAM and row_format to Dynamic but nothing changed.   I have noticed some error during the Linux boot. They seem to continue to occur after the boot adding lines to the log every few seconds. Once booted this normally does not appear to be causing any problems. However, around 1 in 10 boots results in a kernel panic and the computer has on two or three occasions suddenly rebooted after being powered on for a number of hours. I presume the cause of the reboot is a kernel panic as well. I am running Ubuntu 11.10 and I have had Ubuntu installed on the computer for around a year. I have googled around and not found anything useful. I have provided the kernel log lines and the output of smartctl. • What exactly is a Deamon ? ( how to run a root command from apache binded script that uses www-data user )?

  I am trying to run this command from WSGI script service httpd restart The problem is this command can only be run by root and apache uses the www-data user. it has been said the solution is to use a Deamon Process i suppose the idea is to send the command to a file that will be executed by a script that is considered "root" user.. its difficult to understand why they would call this a Deamon Process and try to scare me. Perhaps it should have been called : proxy process when i got the idea that this was a proxy process.. i thought about adding a line to /var/spool/cron/root that way the cron would execute the command for me. but of course this means i have to get the system time and then add 1 second to it and then add it to that line so cron would execute the command for me as root but my script demands an output instantly. so i suppose i need to create a DEAMON PROCESS that works like the cron. in other words it is a bash file that will execute the command in a plain file.. but will this DEAMON PROCESS be running a while command 24/7 every second ? would that not waste resources ? it only needs to activate itself to check for a command to execute when there is a command to be executed. i mean in PHP and other programming languages.. running a while statement when there is nothing to be executed could waste resources of the server.. so why should a deamon process constantly be listening for anything. i only want it to listen and execute when it is needed. i do not need a process that is constantly listening.

  I need to remove hyphens from a string in a large number of access fields. What's the best way to go about doing this? Currently, the entries are follow this general format: 2010-54-1 2010-56-1 etc. I'm trying to run append queries off of this field, but I'm always getting validation errors causing the query to fail. I think the cause of this failure is the hypens in the entries, which is why I need to remove them.
