• Is there a way to read 10000 lines from a file in python?

  I am relatively new in python, was working on C a lot. Since I was seeing so many new functions in python that I do not know, I was wondering if there is a function that can request 10000 lines from a file in python. Something like this is what I expect if that kind of function exist: lines = get_10000_lines(file_pointer) Did python have a build-in function or is there any module that I can download for this? If not, how do I do this to be easiest way. I need to analyze a huge file so I want to read 10000 lines and analyze per time to save memory. Thanks for helping!

  Question: Where can I find the precedence of characters when sorting in MySQL, PHP, or just in general on Linux and Windows OS? For example, everybody knows that a comes before b when performing an ascending sort on a string in MySQL. But what about other characters? Does the dollar-sign $ come before asterisk * ? Does a space come before an exclamation-mark? etc... What dictates the sort order? Does it use underlying ascii / UTF-8 values? Is it different for different technologies?   hello. I look in documentation and source code but cannot figure out how to get return value type of boost bind functor. I am trying to accomplish following: 35 template<typename T,size_t N, class F> 36 boost::array<typename F::value_type, N> make_array(T (&input)[N], F unary) { 37 boost::array<typename F::value_type, N> array; 38 std::transform(input, input + N, array.begin(), unary); 39 return array; 40 } where F can be bind functor. the above does not work because functor does not have value_type. for that matter, is there standard interface for unary/binary functor as far as return value. solution: it should be result_type. also equivalent defined are argument_type and first/second_argument_type for binary functions Thanks

• Is PThread a good choice for multi-platorm C/C++ multi-threading program?

  Been doing mostly Java and smattering of .NET for last five years and haven't written any significant C or C++ during that time. So have been away from that scene for a while. If I want to write a C or C++ program today that does some multi-threading and is source code portable across Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux/Unix - is PThread a good choice? The C or C++ code won't be doing any GUI, so won't need to worry with any of that. For the Windows platform, I don't want to bring a lot of Unix baggage, though, in terms of unix emulation runtime libraries. Would prefer a PThread API for Windows that is a thin-as-possible wrapper over existing Windows threading APIs. ADDENDUM EDIT: Am leaning toward going with boost:thread - I also want to be able to use C++ try/catch exception handling too. And even though my program will be rather minimal and not particularly OOPish, I like to encapsulate using class and namespace - as opposed to C disembodied functions.

• Jquery mobile function calls before Ajax Request end

  Here is my problem. When My Home page shows, I call the LoadUser functions, which on success, sets the globalUser variable with the returned json, and after it loads I call the alert function but it says globalUser is undefined. I have tried many other work arounds, but I always get the undefined mesage.   I just finished writing a program that I can add, remove or print objects to a list, but I am having difficulty implementing two more functions that is insert_back, which inserts a value to the end of a list. Also,I have to modify the representation of a List and alter whatever methods are necessary to make insert_back run in constant time: O(1). This new operation should have the signature: void List::insert_back( const Object& data ); Also, isIncreasing, For example, for a list containing head-() (11) (8) (15) (3), isIncreasing() should return false. • Page layout breaks only in Opera which is weird?

  Okay so I'm working on an admin panel, in which everything should always be only within the view port until you hit the minimum widths and heights set. The current version of it can be seen here (its still in development) : http://qwibbledesigns.co.uk/preview/Admin/ In layout terms, it works flawlessly in all browsers, even down to ie6 =D. However, opera doesn't like it, and for some reason, always add's extra space to the bottom of the page, making it have an extra scrollbar, and I can't fathom it out which is highly annoying. Jquery is used to set the height of the container, sidebar, and content area so that they're always within the browser view port, and these functions rerun when the window is resized. I therefore cannot work out the the life of me what's wrong with opera. Would anyone mind taking a look and seeing if they can work it out? =D

  Let me start by saying I have looked at many similar questions asked, but all of them relate to Timestamp and DateTime field type without indexing. At least that is my understanding. As we all know, there are certain advantages when it comes to DateTime. Putting them aside for a minute, and assuming table's engine is InnoDB with 10+ million records, which query would perform faster when criteria is based on: DateTime with index int with index In other words, it is better to store date and time as DateTime or UNIX timestamp in int? Keep in mind there is no need for any built-in MySQL functions to be used.

• Just how much do I want to make virtual?

  I am writing an abstract superclass where literally every method is going to be overridden. There is some default functionality I could implement, but most of the time it's enough to leave the implementation to the subclass writer. Since just about every method is going to be overwritten, how much should I make virtual and how much should I just leave as regular methods? In the current incarnation, everything is virtual, but I still haven't let this loose to anyone to use, so the design is flexible. What advantages/disadvantages are there to virtual functions? Links to good reading material about this would be appreciated.

• Any good idioms for error handling in straight C programs?

  Getting back in to some C work. Many of my functions look like this: int err = do_something(arg1, arg2, arg3, &result); With the intent the result gets populated by the function, and the return value is the status of the call. The darkside is you get something naive like this: int err = func1(...); if (!err) { err = func2(...); if (!err) { err = func3(...); } } return err; I could macro it I suppose: #define ERR(x) if (!err) { err = (x) } int err = 0; ERR(func1(...)); ERR(func2(...)); ERR(func3(...)); return err; But that only works if I'm chaining function calls, vs doing other work. Obviously Java, C#, C++ have exceptions that work very well for these kinds of things. I'm just curious what other folks do and how other folks do error handling in their C programs nowadays.

  I'm looking for a way to easily read in a C# file and place it into a Java Object for database storage (storing the class name, functions, variables, etc). I'm making a Hierarchical State Machine AI Building Tool for a game I'm creating and need to be able to import an existing C# file and store it in a database for retrieval in the future. • Multithreaded SDL error in C++

  I'm building a program in C++, using SDL, and am occasionally receiving this error: * glibc detected * ./assistant: double free or corruption (!prev) It's difficult to replicate, so I can't find exactly what's causing it, but I just added a second thread to the program, and neither thread run on its own seems to cause the error. The threads don't share any variables, though they both run the functions SDL_BlitSurface and SDL_Flip. Could running these concurrently throw up such an error, or am I barking up the wrong tree? If this is the cause, should I simply throw a mutex around all SDL calls? Thanks

• What's some simple F# code that generates the .tail IL instruction?

  I'd like to see the .tail IL instruction, but the simple recursive functions using tail calls that I've been writing are apparently optimized into loops. I'm actually guessing on this, as I'm not entirely sure what a loop looks like in Reflector. I definitely don't see any .tail opcodes though. I have "Generate tail calls" checked in my project's properties. I've also tried both Debug and Release builds in Reflector. • Writing a C++ wrapper for a C library

  I have a legacy C library, written in an OO type form. Typical functions are like: LIB *lib_new(); void lib_free(LIB *lib); int lib_add_option(LIB *lib, int flags); void lib_change_name(LIB *lib, char *name); I'd like to use this library in my C++ program, so I'm thinking a C++ wrapper is required. The above would all seem to map to something like: class LIB { public: LIB(); ~LIB(); int add_option(int flags); void change_name(char *name); ... }; I've never written a C++ wrapper round C before, and can't find much advice about it. Is this a good/typical/sensible approach to creating a C++/C wrapper?

  Hi, What i need to do is as follows: I have a bigloo scheme program (*.scm), then using the bigloo frameworks jvm a class file is generated. I want to use this .class file from a .java file. That is, i need to import this(.class) file as i want to use some functions defined in the scheme file which is now a .class file. How do i do it in Eclipse? i have created two packages one for java and one for the .class file. Then i import the package containing the .class file. But i am not able to use the function in the .class file in the .java file. Are there any settings to be done? Please let me know how this can be done.

  I'm passing a method as a variable to be used as a callback. When its called, the "this" is not the object the method is a member of. How do I go about getting access to the method's object instance so I can get access to it variables and other member functions? I have no control over the callback call method, its a separate library. All I do is call the binding from my object init method. • Processing a method after the view has loaded..

  Hi ! I have implemented a subview which is supposed to load immediately when I click a button in the parent view. After loading the subview(which is basically holding an activityindicator), the program is supposed to process a method(which gets data from a server, so takes time) in it. However, I am unable to do it. What happens now is, when I click the button on the parent view, it processes the method first and only after that does the subview load on screen. Why is this so? Is there any specific functions I could use to make my method load only after the view has loaded?

  I was an Eclipse user, now I have to use Vim in my machine. I used to "compare" a file I edited with a CVS repository to do merges an commit the files, using a context menu and my mouse. Is this possible in Vim? Opening a vimdiff for a file before commiting, and commit it from vim itself? And how is that supposed to work? I'm supposing I would be editing a file. Then, I want to see the modifications. I run vimdiff in gvim, and a new window (or buffer) is opened. I run the modifications, save what is applicable (using vimdiff commands), and commit running another command. Is this all transparent in vim? Do I have to keep getting out of vim to my terminal, or can all be done inside it? Do I need to use some plugins, or just really simple functions inside my vimrc?
