• Restoring Box Sync (box.com) using physical media after OS reinstall

  I have my Box Folder on a different drive ( D: ) than my Operating System Drive ( C: ) I follow these instructions to set the local folder on the second drive. https://support.box.com/hc/en-us/articles/200852947-How-Can-I-Change-the-Default-Folder-Location-for-Box-Sync- I had to format and reinstall Windows 7, leaving the other drive (D: ) untouched. now i reinstalled Box Sync, and directed it to the same location where i already have all my files. However, Box Sync renamed the folder to (Box ([email protected]) ) as a bckup, and is downloading everything again. As i have like 30Gb of files, and it takes many hour to download them, i just want to use the files that i already have in my local disk. i tried copying all files again to the new local Box Folder, but files started to get duplicated. Is there any way to avoid downloading everything again each time i reinstall my OS ? Thanks

• ZFS: RAIDZ versus stripe with ditto blocks

  I'm going to build a ZFS file server from FreeBSD. I learned recently that I can't expand a RAIDZ udev once it's part of the pool. That's a problem since I'm a home user and will probably add one disk a year tops. But what if I set copies=3 against my entire pool and just throw individual drives into the pool separated? I've read somewheres that the copies will try and distribute across drives if possible. Is there a guarantee there? I really just want protection from bit rot and drive failure on the cheap. Speed's not an issue since it'll go over a 1Gb network and at MOST stream 720p podcasts. Would my data be guaranteed safe from a single drive failure? Are there things I'm not considering? Any and all input is appreciated.

• Cannot install netbeans on Gentoo

  I'm trying to install Netbeans on my Gentoo system and I just cannot get it to work. When I'm compiling it It fails due to not being able to locate org.apache.maven.project.MavenProject. [nb-javac] class file for org.apache.maven.project.MavenProject not found I'm suspecting it has something to do with the installation not being able to find several files. However these are reported as warnings. The missing files have a version in their filenames, the files that are on the disk have a version number that is slightly off. • Dropped Dell XPS has hard-drive trouble

  Yesterday, my mom dropped her laptop to the floor and got the blue screen of death after trying to boot the system. I was able to start a Fedora live CD and get some of her stuff off the hard drive, but I cannot seem to be able to install Windows on it. The installation starts loading files and then the computer turns off. I am thinking that she might need a new hard drive. Any ideas? Edit: I actually was able to boot the Windows XP installation but it is saying that no hard disk is detected. How can this be possible if I was able to mount the drive on fedora yesterday?

• Increase performance of Samsung 830 256GB SSD

  I have a Samsung 830 SSD in my notebook connected to a SATA interface. This is a rather old HP notebook nc8430 which means SATA is SATA I and not II or even III that disk supports. But SATA I still supports speeds up to 150MB/s so I expected at least double values as per image below. CrystalDiskMark shows rather slow performance: I've been using this SSD for over a year now and I would like to know what to do to make it blazingly fast as other reports say it should be?   BOOTMGR IS MISSING PRESS CTRL+ALT+DEL TO RESTART Note: This is a VM on VMWare ESX server, but that should not matter I put in the 2008 R2 x64 install dvd and can get to recovery, but it lists no Operating Systems. • PC will be turned off in safe mode

  I wanted to scan a Dell inspiron N5010 laptop in safe mode. When I took it to the safe mode environment and ran the AV to scan, after some while the PC went out! The power options menu options (when plug is in) are as follows: Screensaver after 4 mins. Dim to display after 10 mins. Turn off display after 15 mins. Hard disk, sleep and hibernate are all off (set to never). I tested the machine without scanning it, i.e, went to the safe mode and waited to see what occurs after time elapsing. By observations so far (because I can apply more tests to determine that where the problem exactly is), the problem is when the machine is in safe mode and is doing something (in current case, scanning). What do you think? Why it goes out in this situation please? Thanks in advance.

• Reliable Backup Solution for Linux for Complete System Restoration

  What's the best backup solution for Linux that can completely restore the entire filesystem to a blank harddrive (including partitioning) after an old harddrive dies? I'm currently running a few Ubuntu machines, some with RAID-1 and others without RAID (mostly laptops). I'd like to implement a backup solution that can take incremental snapshots of the entire filesystem, so that if I were to replace all the harddrives in a machine, I could use the backup to restore a perfect copy of the previous filesystem. Unfortunately, nearly all the backup solutions I've found seem to be glorified rsync scripts, which only backup some files, and have no easy way to restore once the entire filesystem is gone. Some of the more complicated solutions, like Bacula, might do what I need, but require a complicated server/client setup and are notoriously difficult to maintain. I've heard that Apple's TimeMachine utility has this ability, and I've had similar success taking differential disk images with Acronis True Image on Windows, but of course neither of these work on Linux. Is there anything comparable for Ubuntu?

• Logging with Resource Monitor?

  I am having sudden spikes in disk read activity, which can tie up my system for a few seconds at a time. I would like to figure out the cause of this before I set my machine to go live. With Performance Monitor I know I can log activity, but this does not show me individual processes that cause a spike. Resource Monitor allows me to see processes, but I have no way to keep logs. It seems unless I have Resource Monitor open at the time of a spike, I will not be able to identify the process causing the spike. Can someone suggest a way to log with Resource Monitor, or an alternative tool that can?

• MacBook Refuses to Boot

  I have a MacBook that has unfortunately died on me. I randomly got a pop up message that said I needed to restart my computer, and once I did, I was greeted with the blinking folder question mark start up screen. I've tried everything, including running Disk Utility repair and reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling OS X. All of my data is backed up and safe, I just need my computer to start again. Before I go off and buy a new hard drive, I wanted to see if there is anything I might have forgotten.

• Copying windows 8 Users folder having long long paths

  I was trying to move my "Users" folder in Windows 8 as described here and here. But when I try to copy the folder using "xcopy" in Windows Installation Disk Repair Mode, after some files are copied, I get "insufficient memory". The files on which the error is given are like C:\Users\Bilal\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data.........Application Data\Application Data..... What is the point in such directories within directories? I also tried copying them using Mini Windows XP, but the problem was there too.. Also tried copying using Parted Magic Live CD... but still.. So now, how can I move them? Another Question. Is moving such/ system files using Linux a good idea? Does it do anything to permissions?

• VMWare Server lck file keeps coming back

  I am running VMWare Server 2.0 on a Debian Lenny system as a host OS. I am getting this error when I try to start a Virtual Machine Cannot open the disk '/var/lib/vmware/Virtual Machines//.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. Reason: Failed to lock the file. So I looked around on the web and found that I need to delete the .lck folder and file in order to get this error This seems to happen any time I reboot my Debian Server. The Virtual Machines sometimes do not recover and this lck file is causing problems. Should I create a cron script that does a rm *.lck on each of my machines on reboot? Looking for any direction on how to resolve this. It seems when i do a "reboot" command it is maybe not gracefully shutting down the VMware containers so the lock files are still intact?

• Can someone correct me about Windows 2008 DFS implementation

  I have 2 two Windows 2003 file servers using DoubleTake at the moment. They are in an 2003 AD domain. And each server has it's own disk set. It is time to replace the servers... I want to use Windows 2008 64bit Ent. I was thinking of using DFS-R to replace DoubleTake. The part I'm not sure about is clustering. Do I need to have shared storage if each server has a copy of the data? I want to have the data available to the same share name, so maybe I don't fully understand how DFS is set up. I currently have about 6TB of data. I expect to grow by 3TB a year on these file servers. Any resources/books that could teach me would be good to know as well.

  I have a file called stderr1 in the work directory of several of the SAP servers in my production cluster. It has grown to around 19GB's to fill the hard disk on each server. I have deleted all trace files and WP files from within transaction SM50 but that hasn't deleted it (or re-named it to .old). If I try to rename or delete it manually, it says I can't because the file is in use. Please can you tell me how I can delete or shrink the stderr1 file?

• Can you run Android 2.2 Froyo or 2.3 Gingerbread in a VM?

  I came across a how-to guide for running Android 1.7 in a virtual machine (VirtualBox), but 1.7 is old. I haven't been able to find a Android 2.2 or 2.3 image anywhere, does anyone have any ideas on how to virtualize newer Android OS's? Preferably a free virtualization solution like VirtualBox.   hi, the mysql database has arround 2TB of data. i have a master-slave-slave replication running. the application that uses the database does read (SELECT) queries just on one of the 2 slaves and write (DELETE/INSERT/UPDATE) queries on the master. the application does way more reads, than writes. if we have a problem with the read (SELECT) queries, we can just add another slave database and tell the application, that there is another salve. so it scales well... Currently, the master is running arround 40% disk io due to the writes. So i'm thinking about how to scale the the database in the future. Because one day the master will be overloaded. What could be a solution there? maybe mysql cluster? if so, are there any pitfalls or limitations in switching the database to ndb? thanks a lot in advance... :)

  I want to get off an older Mac OS X system permanently. It is an iBook G3, so that has two important characteristics: Power PC, not Intel based. Runs only Tiger, not Leopard. This means, as far as I can tell: Cannot run Time Machine directly. Here's the approach I have been contemplating: Mount the drive in Firewire mode. Back up the drive as a external drive to the Time Machine volume. Disconnect the drive (permanently). However, I'm concerned that this drive will eventually age out, when the Time Machine volume fills up, and the old-system-as-external-drive is gone. Would it be better to do a single backup with another utility, to shared disk?

• Trying to get a PC to boot off a bootable SD card that is inside an USB attached Android device.

  First, I'd like to make myself look less a madman than I may have appeared to be. I wanted to have a bootable USB stick with me at all times, but it's less convenient because it's an extra object and it's easier to lose, forget etc. Then I thought, I have an Android phone, and it has a micro SD in it; perfect. Not all PC's can boot off a card reader, but the phone itself is a card reader when attached as a disk drive. Or at least so I thought. Turns out that my netbook BIOS (tested on Asus eeePC) refuses to see it as an external harddrive; it only recognizes it as a generic USB device and doesn't offer an option to boot from it. The device has a name "Android phone" or smth, so it seems to me that it doesn't work as a "pure" card reader, and instead still manifests itself as a phone. Can it be somehow overridden?

• Windows 7, files reappear after deletion.

  I'm trying to delete some files from a folder. I've taken ownership of the files and the folder. When I delete these files Windows doesn't report any errors and deletes them. BUT, after I press F5 these files reappear again. There are no messages whatsoever, they are just undeletable. I know login off will help, but how do I fix it without going through the pain of closing everything down? P.S. Files disappear from the folder after aprox. 5 minutes. Update. Turns out my version of Windows did not properly upgrade from test version, so it had some weird disk drive issues.

• Allow READ access to local folders in 2003SBS AD

  Have a SBS2003 client with a mess of a domain that is in process of being cleaned. But, for the life of me I cannot find a setting that will allow write access to the local hard disk for domain users with redirected profiles(to the server). This is needed only for one program that will not follow a symbolic link to the network path, instead it seems to be hard coded to the %appdata% folder but only on the c: drive.... So question is how can I allow "Domain users" write access to the local %appdata% directory? I have tried setting it manually on a machine but it kept resetting to RO no matter how many times I tried. Everytime I would uncheck the RO property it would reset sometime right after i hit OK. • Create a share on iscsi drive in Windows Server 2012

  I am brand new to server administration but I don't belive im trying to do anything to exotic I have a windows server 2012 (standard) and a drobo 800i My goal is to setup company shares on the iscsi target I have setup on the drobo So far I have: initialized the iscsi and connected made the iscsi disk read/write(it default started as read only) formatted and mounted it (as drive E:) from the server local desktop I can see and write files to the E:\ drive in shares wizard I do not see it as a volume option when I view the volumes window I see (e: drobo Fixed 16tb 16tb) I'm new to everything but I would think since its a mounted drive I should be able to share a folder on it but it appears its not that straight forward suggestions?

• Western Digital Mybook is creating folders I didn't create

  I have a WD MyBook which has been creating empty folders with a long string of numbers and alphabets and some shorter ones with just some numbers with a 0kb file in it Some of these can be deleted but some just stay put. It's irritating to find new ones everyday and now i have a collection of them which don't delete is there any way to delete these ? Edit: I have scanned the drive using Antivirus and AntiMalware Software so i don't think it would have a virus One solution is copying all the matter elsewhere and formatting the hard disk but there is not guarantee that these folders wont reappear.
