  So, one of my servers has a hard disk failure. It's running software RAID, the system locked up and according to /proc/mdstat (and /var/log/messages), it's really down: Personalities : [raid1] md2 : active raid1 sdb2[1] 104320 blocks [2/1] [_U] md5 : active raid1 sdb5[1] 2104448 blocks [2/1] [_U] md6 : active raid1 sdb6[1] 830134656 blocks [2/1] [_U] md1 : active raid1 sdb1[1] 143363968 blocks [2/1] [_U] and Nov 5 22:04:37 m38501 smartd[4467]: Device: /dev/sda, not capable of SMART self-check However when I do smartctl -H /dev/sda, it passes the test. It also passes the test with smartctl --test=short /dev/sda. So, is smartctl a broken testing tool, or am I doing something completely off?

  I am running a software on several computers at my workplace and the software can run different audio and video files stored on a shared folder in a central computer. The software runs on windows 7 and every person in my company can add or remove files from the shared folder, but this privilege puts the data at risk. I was thinking of creating an email alert to my self whenever a file is deleted. I have written a windows powershell script for sending me emails from smtp server but how can I hook it up to the event of file or folder deletion in a specific shared folder?

• Which Message Queue should I choose (must run on Linux)

  There are many open source Message queues for Linux, and I need some help deciding what I should go for. My problem is simple - I get sent a list of files that needs to be processed. Each job can't be split up, but they are self contained and can be spread to multiple computers. I'm thinking of solving this using a message queue. Multiple clients send a message to a central queue. Each queue has a number of subscribers that will take jobs from that queue when they have finished processing the current job. Ideally it should have the following qualities Message queue must be able to store unprocessed messages in case of a shutdown/reboot A job can only be processed by a single subscriber (don't want duplicate jobs) The subscribers should be able to send jobs of their own, that will be processed by a different set of subscribers. Can anyone suggest a simple to use message queue?

• Apache is running but there is no page displayed

  I am on a Mac OSX and I am using the built in PHP and Apache2. I have been setting up MySQL and finally when I got MySQL working my local site won't display. Do note that I did have the web server running and delivering PHP enabled pages, just no database connection. But my question is not about MySQL. I have changed various settings in the 'http.conf' file, and I have the line: '127.0.0.1 localhost' in my hosts file. I also have other alias' pointing to 127.0.0.1. I have checked everything I could about Apache and I have made sure that any message in the error_log is ok. I currently have my errorLevel set to debug, so I get all the messages. At this point (HOURS of self fixing) I think I need help. What can I provide for someone to figure this out with me. Thanks.

• ADFS 2.0 and WebEx

  We have a brand new deployment going on, where our University has purchased WebEx MeetingPlace. We have the Cisco CallManager component working, but the integration with Single Sign On with ADFS 2.0 has been nothing short of torture. The biggest problem I'm working with is that we use Split-Brain DNS, and our internal domain name versus external domain name is different. Trying to determine what credentials are getting passed back and forth, certificate errors for using the self-signed certificate, etc. Does anyone have any experience with this, or something similar? Do you have any tips, or watch-out-for-this, etc.? I've not worked with a Federated Authentication system before, and this scenario is very black-box-esque. Sorry, I'm also partially ranting as I'm frustrated.

• Amazon mount EBS

  I'm trying to mount /vol to a EBS volume on an Amazon EC2 instance. I'm formatting the device to xfs, adding "/dev/sdh /vol xfs noatime 0 0" to my /etc/fstab file, making the /vol dir and mounting it and whenever I try to do anything with that volume (create a file in /vol, cd, ls, anything) or I try to run df the server just freezes. Anyone have any idea what this might be? It's driving me crazy. Edit: It seems to freeze after I mount, has nothing to do with doing any commands to the volume it's self.

• ^C not working in zsh on Mac OSX

  Ctrl-C stopped working for me at the terminal when using zsh (on mac osx). I didn't notice the exact moment that it happend so I can't be sure what caused it. I didd't update zsh in a while though. and didn't touch .zshrc (I have it at a repo http://github.com/astrails/dotzsh) If I run bash, ^C works in it. If I run any command, like cat, ^C will work to stop it too. but inside zsh it just doesn't do anything. bindkey | grep \\^C gives "^B"-"^C" self-insert zsh 4.3.10 (i386-apple-darwin10.4.3), installed though ports (zsh-devel @4.3.10_0+doc+examples+mp_completion+pcre) mac os 10.6.6

• dual boot preinstalled windows 8 laptop with windows 7

  I am having a hard disk in gpt partition style and Windows 8 is pre-installed in uefi mode. While trying to dual boot using usb bootable disk(using rufus,gpt partition style,fat32),it displays "Windows is loading files", then while displaying "Starting Windows" it hangs. So, I tried to install it inside Windows using setup.exe. Everything was running fine, but when it gets self restarted again, it got stuck at "Starting Windows". When restarted in Windows 8, it showed a htm file stating that "Windows cannot be installed on a computer using battery power. If the battery runs out of power during the installation, you might lose data. To continue the installation, plug in the computer's power adapter." I am sure that power adapter is connected. I Googled a lot on this, but I didn't get solution.

  Hi, I recently updated my nexus one to 2.2. Now I can't connect to my uni's wifi. They use PEAP with GTC. I had it working fine on 2.1. Also it works fine on my Ubuntu laptop. I have entered my uni number (user name) in the identity box. I have entered my password in the password box. I have emailed the certificated that works on Ubuntu to my self and installed it on the nexus one. I have enabled secure credentials. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Glen.

• Xpath automatization software

  Too sad this topic was closed. But I'm kind of a having the same question. I want to construct xpathes, for common html block which appears on page. For example: you can give two URLs to that software, which will contain SAME html blocks (divs) , but having different content in it. by giving 2 stackoverflow.com url's, software could detect that same div#id is being used once again, and just give XPATH'es of those html blocks like for example. Of course I can find xpath'es my self, as far as I remember, firebug makes it easy,shows xpath of every html block, but this is kind of hard procedure if you want to get xpath'es for LOTS of html elements. so that's why I want this kind of software to help in this routine.

  I'm wanting to get a new laptop and desktop. I'm self-employed and so both bits of kit are primarily for business use. I've been looking into leasing both computers as an alternative to purchasing outright. Does anyone have any experience of this? I'm UK based and have found a company called hardsoft which seem to offer a good service. I'm particularly attracted by the upgrade after 18 months option and the fact that the machines are under warranty for the lift of the lease. • Unknown protocol when trying to connect to remote host with stunnel

  I'm trying to set up a stunnel for WebDav on Windows. I want to connect 80 port on my local interface to 443 on another machine in my network. I can ping the machine remote machine. However when I use the tunnel, I'm getting this error all the time SSL state (accept): before/accept initialization SSL_accept: 140760FC: error:140760FC:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_CLIENT_HELLO:unknown protocol There is nothing in the logs on the other machine and here's my stunnel connection config [https] accept = 127.0.0.2:80 connect = 10.0.0.60:443 verify = 0 I've set it up to accept all certificates so this shouldn't be a problem with a self-signed certificate remote host uses. Does anyone knows what might be the problem that this connection cannot be eastablished?

• Unable to access published programs on TS web access - win server 2008 OS

  I am using the TS Web Access feature provided by windows server 2008 to publish programs so that they can be accessed over internet using RDC client. I am able to access the programs from the intranet domain . However, when i try from outside the college network, i am only able to see the published programs but not connect to them as i get an error saying "Remote computer cannot be connected. The certificate subject name and the gateway address requested do not match." . pls note that i have created a self -signed certificate and installed on server myself. Also, i am using the direct IPAddress of the server as the gateway address. Since i am able to access programs from with domain , i suspect it to be a simple setting with gateway or certificate. Please let me know if any further info is required on this..any help is appreciated..

• is it worth defragging an iPod

  Essentially my 5G iPod was cutting tracks off and generally misbehaving. So I did the following: 1) Use Diskwarrior - heavy directory fragmentation which it fixed; 2) Use iDefrag - some fragmentation but it kept halting as it couldn't move files; 3) Try to write out drive with Disk Utility - got a warning from DU so gave up before I started; 4) Completely restored using iTunes; 5) Reran Diskwarrior - still heavy directory fragmentation; 6) Reran iDefrag, still fragmentation although limited to two bands; The iPod is much quicker to traverse menus and no more track skipping. My question is this - is defragging worth it or does the heat generated by the process kill the drive and make it a self-defeating process. Anyone have any metrics/ figures? Clearly it's a bad idea for solid state drives like the nano & touch.

• Automated method to convert .reg registry file to reg.exe commands

  Occasionally I need to put registry entries into batch files to use in login scripts, unattended installers, etc. While it's pretty easy to add one or two registry commands to a batch file using reg.exe, when there is a large amount of registry data, it becomes tedious. I usually just end up merging an external reg file in those cases, which I would like to avoid, since it ruins the self-contained nature of the batch file. Does anybody know of any tools which can automatically convert a .reg file to a series of REG ADD and REG DELETE commands? This would make life a lot easier! Thanks.

• [xUbuntu] Move a window back into the visible area?

  Hi I have this annoying little problem on my laptop that sometimes after I have used a external monitor (with higher resolution) some applications place them self outside the visible area of my desktop. So the question is how do I move them back into the visible area? (please note that no part of the window is visible so I can't use the mouse) Is there some app that can give me focus to move a application to the mouse pointer or something like that?   I'm trying to run virtual env and all the documentation says I don't need to run it as root (and probably shouldn't). If I run it as root, everything works.   Our WSUS server stopped working until the patch related to .NET 4.0 was installed, at which point clients started downloading and updating again. However, the WSUS mmc console occasionally disconnects when performing various tasks, such as running automatic approval rules; also wsusutil checkhealth creates the following events: 13042: Self-update is not working. 12002: The Reporting Web Service is not working. 12012: The API Remoting Web Service is not working. 12032: The Server Synchronization Web Service is not working. 12022: The Client Web Service is not working. 12042: The SimpleAuth Web Service is not working. 12052: The DSS Authentication Web Service is not working. Apparently there are many possible causes for these events. I'm looking for a way to figure out what is wrong, so that I can fix it.

  Hi, I'm using an app called django-chronograph. It has a code of line which works in my dev environment and does not work in production: p = subprocess.Popen(['python', get_manage_py(), 'run_job', str(self.pk)]) This line crashes in production with: unknown command run_job Whereas when I run directly from command line: manage.py run_job It works fine. Interestingly it worked once when we exchanged 'python' with 'usr/bin/python'. then we restarted the server once more and it was back to old behaviour. Thus it seems as we have a python path issue. I'm not the guy who is running the server, its my app that should run and it would be great to get some help here.
