  I have a Lenovo X200 laptop on which I am running Ubuntu 9.10. Recently, (I assume after some updating, but I really don't know) my ethernet port stopped working under Linux. A more tech/linux-savvy friend of mine was able to temporarily fix the problem by manually editing the resolv.conf file with the DNS servers he found through his connection. However, after rebooting, the problem came back and now I am looking for a more permanent solution.

• I have an SSH proxy working, now I need to select a different outgoing IP for my client

  Hi, I have a SSH tunnel set up to my dedicated server via Putty which I am using as a socks proxy. The problem is I need to use a different outgoing IP address than the main IP of the dedicated server. I have a block of 30 ips for this server but even if I set up a web based proxy (php) it will use the main server ip. Does anyone know a solution? Thanks!

  I like managing my own files, and this is definitely possible with Aperture 3. But there seems to be two ways to import into Aperture: either by dragging and dropping, or importing one folder at a time, manually, through the Aperture import window. BUT whenever I drag and drop the photos, it imports them into the Aperture library, making duplicates of everything. And if I add them manually through Aperture, I have to add each folder at a time, which is extremely tedious. Is there any solution?

  We are in the process of backing up our hard drives to Blu Rays. I am creating tar.gz files and burning them to Blu Ray. Is it possible to use a simple (preferably Python-based) solution for creating images of those tar.gz files, of a predetermined size (to fit in the Blu Ray), and simply burn this images to the disc? Do you have any other approach for creating physical back-up of your hard drives?

  I'm having trouble with the Gmail yellow notification area disappearing too quickly in Google Chrome. For reference, I am talking about the notification that appears at the top of Gmail after archiving or deleting a message from a web browser. I tried it on IE9 and it works fine. I have also cleared the cache and cookies on Chrome and the issue persists. Has anybody run into this on Chrome and know of a solution?

• Recommendations on managing dot files for users using Puppet

  Goal is to have a collection of dot files (.bashrc, .vimrc, etc.) in a central location. Once it's there, Puppet should push out the files to all managed servers. I initially was thinking of giving users FTP access where they could upload their dot files and then having an rsync cron job. However, it might not be the most elegant or robust solution.   There's a known issue with starting virtual machines with large hard drive images. Apparently, the time-out is 3 seconds, but in reality, it can take up to 15 seconds for a machine to start. I've read several bug reports, and people confirming it's a time-out problem, but I have yet to see a solution. Is there an option I can pass, like: virsh start MyMachine --ignore-timeout Or a config file that needs changed? Thanks!

  When I run a game on my windows 7 laptop, Rundll32 completely uses up one of my cores and the game wont start. By searching the web I have been able to fix it by 1 - Disabling game info collection/updation from the games explorer. It solved the problem for some games but not all 2 - Killing the game exe once rundll32 gets stuck and restarting the game This has solved the problem for now, but is there a proper and permanent solution to this?
