• How can I fix a computer that is literally too slow to do anything?

  I'm troubleshooting a Windows 7 PC for a friend. A couple of days ago it started running 'slow'. It turns out 'slow' is about 15 minutes to the first glimpse of the desktop, and another 30 to show icons. It is possible to open Task Manager, and nothing seems awry, CPU usage at 1-5%, plenty of memory free. The machine is clearly infested with malware though, in particular a program called 'Optimizer Pro' is demanding money to 'remove 5102 files slowing down my computer'. This seems highly suspicious. My problem is though, that I can't access msconfig (I left it for a couple of hours after having hopefully typed it into the Start Menu and hit enter - nothing seems to have loaded), or anything at all basically. I can boot from a Linux Live CD, but can I actually do anything useful from there? System Restore hasn't fixed it either, and Safe Mode exhibits the same behavior.

  I am using a Windows 7 PC,I am using sony dcr -sr88 handy cam . I need to transfer all my videos from handycam to my PC. when i try to connect to the PC through USB. it detects the usb drive in the Handycam on my PC and shows the used memory. But when i open the folder it shows "folder is empty". How i can copy the files? I have tried following: Changed the USB cable CHanged the USB port I can play the videos through handicam, but those files not visible in PC when connected in USB mode. Please help ..bit urgent!

  I have updated to Windows 8 and got Internet Explorer 10, but I don't get the full screen mode, is just like another desktop app. All links on the Windows Store Apps (Bing, News...) redirect to the old desktop and open my default browser (chrome). I have set IE as default browser but that not solve the problem. I have been looking on the IE10 options but I don't see this option. How can I solve this? Maybe this info help: Windows version: Windows 8 Pro 64 bits Installed Browsers: Firefox, Chrome (default), Opera, IE10 I have seem other people with the same version and is working Edit: Is possible to have IE10 by default for windows 8 apps links and Chrome for Desktop?

  I have to use the On-Screen Keyboard of Windows 7 for typing: (In case you haven't used it yet, you can get it via: All Programs - Accessories - Ease of Access - On-Screen Keyboard or simply search for "osk.exe") It offers a feature to "hover" about the buttons. Microsoft describes it as the following: In hovering mode, you use a mouse or joystick to point to a key for a predefined period of time, and the selected character is typed automatically. There is my specific problem. The predefined period of time is too long to be useful for me. The minimum amount of time is 0.5 seconds (max. 3 seconds). Is there any way to alter this value to something < 0.5? For example via editing the registry? Edit: The entry *'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Osk\HoverPeriod'* cannot be set lower than 500 ms. Any helpful tip would be great!

• Bootcamp: setup of Windows 7 (64 bit) hanging at "disk.sys"

  I am having trouble getting Windows 7 Professional (64bit) to install on a Macbook Pro (late 2010 model). The installer hangs when loading the setup from disk. When restarting, I get an option to boot Windows from disk. The installer then starts loading files from disk and suddenly hangs. Using "Safe Mode" (from the advanced menu), it tells me that the installer hangs when loading "disk.sys". The installation is made on a fresh Bootcamp partition, the disk uses GPT. Has anyone seen this before and maybe found a solution?

  I am running a wamp server and trying to use mysqldump to backup a mysql database I have. The following is the PHP code I am using to run mysqldump. exec("mysqldump backup -u$user -p$pass > $sql_file"); When I run the script the page just loads inifnately and the backup is not created. A blank file is being created so I know something is happening. Extra info: exec() is not disabled PHP is not running in safe mode Any ideas?? Win XP, WAMP, MYSQL 5.0.51b

• Is there any trick to join and use Windows 8/8.1 with Samba 4 (4.1.6)?

  It seems that Samba doesn't like at all. I've followed various tutorials and I can't get Windows 8 to work properly with a Ubuntu Server as domain controller. This week i've downloaded ubuntu 14.04 lts and set a fast domain configuration. As usual all other Windows version (XP and 7) work but the newest M$ nightmare doesn't. In this try it doesn't even join the domain, keeps saying the my username or password are wrong. I have tried the following: file { "xxx": thearch => "i386", path => "/xxx/yyyy", owner => root, group => root, mode => 644, content => template("module/test.erb"), } This doesn't pass this variable so I can use it with a <%=thearch% statement within the erb file as I expect. • Why does my HDD produce a high-pitched noise when the CPU is in use?

  I know this is strange. Some time ago, I bought a new 7200rpm HDD for my desktop system (I'll look for the model later). Every time the CPU is used, a high frequency cheep comes from the HDD. I'm sure it's the HDD because the problem does not occur if the HDD is not attached or is in energy-saving mode (I cross-checked by booting from a live CD). What could be the reason for the cheep sounds? Could it be the power supply?

• Computer connects to lan, but not the internet

  I have a computer with Vista Home that can connect to the router, but it cannot get on the internet. I cannot ping google.com, the request times out. I've tried this on two separate networks and have no trouble with other computers connecting. I've renewed ipconfig, reset winsock, updated the wireless adapter, and the hosts file looks fine. I've tried disabling the firewall as well as a direct wired connection. I did a scan with Norton and it didn't find anything. Is there anything else I can try before resorting to a system restore? Update (Copied from Answer) Windows Update was able to find updates and install them (though, they could have already been downloaded previously). When I pinged Google by using their IP 66.102.9.103, it said it lost 25 percent of the packets. I successfully flushed the DNS but it didn't help. Also, I found safe mode with networking works fine.

  I am currently interested in switching from vim to emacs. One of the more compelling reasons for this is the smooth integration with a unix environment. The most experienced emacs users I have seen have a bash prompt at the bottom of their window, with stdout going to a buffer right above it. They then interact with the output of programs such as grep in interesting ways. I am on Ubuntu 10.04 and the default emacs environment does not seem to do much for me in the way of integration. For example, in the M-x shell mode, output from basic commands like ls produce lots of strange characters and hitting the up arrow does not go to previous commands. Any recommendations on a good direction to go in?

• Sony Vaio laptop hangs up on boot

  When I power on the laptop it displays the "Vaio" logo and the screen after show, but after that the screen is completely blank but the backlight is lit. Nothing progresses from here. When trying to press f8 to boot into safe mode, nothing happens, black screen again. I created a windows 7 32bit install disk (I had the same OS on it before) to repair or even format my pc. I boot from the disk and it loads all the files and gets to the "Windows is starting" screen but after that it always hangs up on a blank screen with a mouse cursor. Is there any fix to this whatsoever?

• Switch to switch encryption over a wireless bridge (TrustSec?)

  I am planning to connect an existing Cisco 3750 switch to a 3560C switch over a wireless PTP bridge. The bridge will be WPA2 protected, but I am looking for an additional measure of security between the switches to prevent other wireless access through either switch. They do not support IPSec, only 802.1Q tunnels, and buying additional hardware is not likely an option. I am looking into using TrustSec manual mode between the switches. After some effort reading into TrustSec and MACsec, I am mostly certain this is a good choice over the wireless bridge, keeping in mind it is a shared medium. Two questions: Can I reliably prevent other wireless traffic from accessing the switches using TrustSec? Does anyone know of any better options with the 3000 series switches?

• Mac OS X 10.6.8 - Can't remove SophosUpdate Packages/Folders on Desktop

  Every day a new "SophosUpdate" folder/package will appear on my desktop (see screenshot). When I highlight it my trash can turns into an eject button. When I drag them to the eject button nothing happens. Also nothing happens when I right click one of them and select "eject". The only thing that got rid of them once was starting up in safe mode but they keep coming back after that. Does anyone know what I can do? I'm stuck.

Authentication mode is set to Windows (since the application is accessible only to Intranet users. Testing some machines, the application loads up properly. For some machines, a logon dialog window appears asking for User Name or Password. These dialog windows are those that you also normally see when you are trying to log into a Windows domain. Any idea why this happens randomly? Thanks.

• Should I bother upgrading my Opteron 270 Server?

  I have an Opteron Server machine (in a large workstation class case) running on the Tyan 2895 motherboard. It's a dual CPU socket board, but I only have one 270 in there. I have 4GB of RAM, but less than 3GB is addressable, even in 64bit mode, due to the way the board is designed. Is it worth spending a few hundred on an additional CPU and maybe some more RAM? The other problem is that one of the two SATA ports on the board had its wire socket break off. So only one drive can be run as of now. I could have it repaired, but at what cost? Add in the fact that the power supply is gunked up with dust and it's a bit of a nightmare. I actually work about it getting too hot. Seems that for the money I could buy a new server rack from Dell, but it also seems a shame to waste an otherwise working, and for my needs still very fast machine.

I am searching for http redirecting to https. http://xxx.mydomain.com -- https://xxx.mydomain.com/sf/sfmain/do/home/ . just need to know, If I own a SSL for mydomain.com. if i redirect a xxx.mydomain.com to mydomain.com/folder will the SSL will be applied to redirected domain? i.e mydomain.com/folder?

• ESXi onboard SATA passthrough [on hold]

  I am running ESXi 5.5 on a home system. When I attempt to pass one of the onboard SATA controllers (Intel ICH10R) to a VM, it is successful. However, the controller never appears in the VM. What else am I missing that would cause a VM to not recognize the controller? Additional Info: The controller is set to AHCI mode in the BIOS Prior to setting up the controller for passthrough, ESXi did recognize the controller and the drives I have tried with multiple VMs, none of which recognized the controller or the attached drives I have two onboard SATA controllers, on controller for ESXi and one for passthrough The final ideal state is that I could passthrough the controller to a FreeNAS VM

• Access denied to EFS encrypted files after PC joins domain

  I'm experiencing strange behavior with Windows Encrypted File System: I have a machine that is in workgroup mode (not joined to a domain) I encrypt an entire directory structure on the machine (basically a folder and subfolders with data files for my application). My application writes and reads files from the encrypted file hierarchy as a local Windows user (let's call the account 'SecureUser'). This works fine I then join the PC to a domain (Let's call it 'TEST') Afterwards, processes running as the local 'SecureUser' account can't read the files it wrote originally when it was off the domain (What is also strange is that the files are listed as "read only" now and I cannot unset this flag via Windows Explorer or the command line, even though it looks like it succeeds) I then 'un-join' the PC from the domain and everything works again Is there something about changing domain membership on a PC that changes the behavior of EFS so that previously encrypted files cannot be read, even by the originating user? • I lost /dev/md2 on my server

  Hi, My 2 hard drives fried at the same moment apparently. My host company rebooted my server in rescue mode and I am trying to recover my data. They told me to mount /dev/sda2 to recover the data I need but, looking at a similar server that I have in pool, the data I'm looking for should be instead in /dev/md2. I can find /dev/md0 but not /dev/md2 (nor /dev/md1). I've looked on several places on the web and I could only find messages explaining how to create new partition. I just need to recover some data, not all of it and I'll be glad if anyone could help me to mount the /dev/md2 folder (or any other trick that would allow me to recover the data that was stored there). • Replacing explorer.exe under Windows 7

  A bit of an odd request I gather, but for reasons too deep to go into detail here I need to replace my explorer.exe in the C:\Windows directory. I have tried doing it myself, through the GUI and command prompt (ran as administrator) but I get access denied. It seems that being an admin on your machine is not the highest permission level after all, and only Trusted Installer can modify the file. Does anybody know a way that works? I was about to boot into safe mode and try it but wanted to get some feedback before I do anything in-depth. Thanks.

• Trying to launch old game using wine

  I'm using wine 1.5.11 on Archlinux, and I try to launch this old game : http://www.cnetfrance.fr/telecharger/waterboy-11006056s.htm?download=1 The problem is that I always get a "Run-time error '13' : Type mismatch" when I try to launch it.
