• Jdeveloper vs java/j2ee/js+extjs ?

  Hi All, i am new to the web development environment, having came from a unix/c environment. i've been recently asked to create a web app, which i thought would require postgresql, java/j2ee, and javascript for the client interface. as i had wanted a nicer gui, i've been reading up on extjs, which looks really nice to me. a colleague mentioned that the time needed time needed to learn all these various pieces is time consuming, and Jdeveloper seems to provide most of what we'd need (i was shown a demo, which appears to be able to generate some nice web interfaces). what are the pros and cons with the different approaches ? some i can think of: - jdeveloper is an integrated ide, which creates UI easily, tightly integrated with database. (pro) - jdeveloper will be heavier? (con) - wizard generated code may be harder to refactor ? • Java Speech Example: Encode, Stream, Decode, Play

  I have been trying to find an example of this that I could use for a couple years, I'm ashamed to admit. I would like to see a working, compileable example (most that I find online don't compile or don't actually work) of reading from the microphone, encoding the voice data in a speech-friendly encoding such as Speex, and streaming that information in real time to a Decoder which then plays the audio. I suppose this example would simply echo what is said. I would like to ultimately use this to learn to make an audio mixing chat server.

  Hello, I am new to OSX user space development. I've read documentation and googled before asking, but still have no clue about the following. If i am to use CoreServices framework to work with files (FSRef, Forks, URLs, etc.) will i be able to get a raw BSD file descriptor (plain int)? If yes, then how can i do that? The thing is, i want to learn to program with OSX frameworks, but the actual task at hand will require BSD file descriptor later. Inso.

• Why do I need an IoC container as opposed to straightforward DI code?

  I've been using Dependency Injection (DI) for awhile, injecting either in a constructor, property, or method. I've never felt a need to use an Inversion of Control (IoC) container. However, the more I read, the more pressure I feel from the community to use an IoC container. I played with .NET containers like StructureMap, NInject, Unity, and Funq. I still fail to see how an IoC container is going to benefit / improve my code. I'm also afraid to start using a container at work because many of my co-workers will see code which they don't understand. Many of them may be reluctant to learn new technology. Please, convince me that I need to use an IoC container. I'm going to use these arguments when I talk to my fellow developers at work.

  I am starting to learn the Clojure programming language. Are there any recommendations for Clojure editors/IDEs on OS X? • String Formatting Tricks/Docs

  Was reading the response by Shaggy Frog to this post and was intrigued by the following line of code: NSLog(@"%@", [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@:%*s%5.2f", key, padding, " ", [object floatValue]]); I know string formatting is an age old art but I'm kinda doing the end around into Cocoa/Obj-C programming and skipped a few grades along the way. Where is a good (best) place to learn all the string formatting tricks allowed in NSString's stringWithFormat? I'm familiar with Apple's String Format Specifiers page but from what I can tell it doesn't shed light on whatever is happening with %*s or the %5.2f (not to mention the 3 apparent placeholders followed by 4 arguments) above?!?

• Python virtualenv conflicting

  I'm trying to learn Django, so I started by reading about virtualenv. After installing it with pip (, I end up with: ... sudo pip install virtualenv) ... virtualenv paths virtualenv at /usr/local/bin/virtualenv and virtualenv-2.7 at /usr/local/bin/virtualenv-2.7 If I use virtualenv-2.7 it seems to work fine, but if I use virtualenv, new modules get added to /usr/local/bin, instead of being inside the environment. Example cd ~ virtualenv v1 source v1/bin/activate easy_install yolk which yolk # /usr/local/bin If I use virtualenv-2-7, yolk gets installed correctly inside v1. Did I mess up the installation? How can I fix this? (maybe uninstall virtualenv and start over). Thanks for any help! Edit: I figured i have two easy_install bins /usr/bin/easy_install-2.7 and /usr/bin/easy_install easy_install --version distribute 0.6.24dev-r0 easy_install-2.7 --version distribute 0.6.24dev-r0 so this may be the cause of problems. More info: python version: 2.7.3 virtualenv version: 1.10.1

  Hello! I'm diving into the world of prolog headfirst but I seem to have hit shallow water! I'm looking at database manipulation in prolog with regards to this tutorial:Learn Prolog Now! It states that I can see my database by entering listing So i tried it and it should basically output everything in my .P file(facts, rules), but this is what i get, here are my sequence of commands: ? consult('D:\Prolog\testfile.P'). [testfile.P loaded] ? listing. library_directory(C:blahblahpathtoXSB) library_directory(C:blahblahXSBpath) {this is listed around 5 times)} shouldn't this command display what is in testfile.P, according to the tutorial? also, after consult testfile.P i should be ableto use assert to add more facts but it doesnt actually change anything in the testfile.P..? any ideas

• How to use the md5 hash?

  Okay, so I'm learning php, html, and mysql to learn website development (for fun). One thing I still don't get is how to use md5 of sha1 hashes. I know how to hash the plain text, but say I want to make a login page. Since the password is hashed and can't be reversed, how would mysql know that the user-inserted password matches the hashed password in the database? Here is what I mean: $password = md5($_POST['password']); $query = ("INSERT INTO `users`.`data` (`password`) VALUES ('$password')"); I know that this snippet of script hashes the password, but how would I use this piece of code and make a login page? Any working examples would be great.

I'm currently using lambdaprobe on Tomcat 5.5.x, but it seems that is no more developed (or not? the site lambdaprobe.org is always down for me...). Has someone good experiences to share? In lambdaprobe there are some info available only if tomcat is instrumented with JMX. Well, JMX is something of strange and mysterious for me. Is a good solution in a production server? It's worth to spend my (little) time to learn it?

• CVS: command-line diff on a remote CVS server between two HEAD revs

  My CVS-fu is not very strong anymore (after years of SVN'ing and now Mercurial'ing). I'm trying to do a diff between two revisions of the HEAD branch (everything is in the HEAD anyway). I received an IDE already set up to use a :pserver:myname@cvsserver:port/cvs/project CVS. I'm on Windows XP. I do not want to use the IDE (the goal here is to learn CVS a bit more). Apparently I cannot login using SSH to the CVS server. How can I run a remote CVS diff between two HEAD revs using the command line? P.S: I am new here, mod me up so I can comment etc. :)

  Hello everyone, I heard on Windows x64 architecture, in order to support to run both x86 and x64 application, there is two separate/different sets of Windows registry -- one for x86 application to access and the other for x64 application to access? For example, if a COM registers CLSID in the x86 set of registry, then x64 application will never be able to access the COM component by CLSID, because x86/x64 have different sets of registry? So, my question is whether my understanding of the above sample is correct? I also want to get some more documents to learn this topic, about the two different sets of registry on x64 architecture. I was reading this article and I've got a couple of quick questions, How is the constructor for value objects commonly defined? As one that takes in all "data members" as parameters or stick to the default constructor and use mutator / accessor methods to set / get data members? • Using terminal vs KDE in linux?

  Hi Im used to using nautilus within centos but have recently just got a VPS and quickly realising that using a KDE is unacceptable in this environment. Although I do find it so much quicker doing things like folder permissions in KDE rather than typing it all out in the terminal? Everyone I speak to says, use the terminal and I should learn this way as opposed to using the KDE, but theres certain things I just dont get How is it possible to make quick changes to scripts and viewing them in a browser etc , without a mouse or using KDE? and only using a terminal?? I am wondering how to develop websites just using the terminal??? How can it be quicker to type out/view permissions etc in the terminal when its instant and just a few clicks in the KDE? Any thoughts are much appreciated. I would love to understand the benefits but just cant seem to see them right now. Cheers Ke.

I think the question is legit because: Raven DB is brand-spanking-new. RDBMS's are probably the de facto for data persistence for .net developers, which Raven DB is not. Given these points, I would like to know your general opinions. Admittedly, the question is sort of broad. That is intentional, because I am trying to learn as much about it as possible, however here are some of my initial concerns and questions: What about using Raven DB for data storage in a shared web hosting environment, since Raven DB is interacted with through HTTP?   Back in the late 80s/early 90s I learned GWBasic on MS-DOS. Then Turbo Pascal. Then Turbo C/Asm. Later I stumbled into PHP and finally made a career out of Perl programming. I'm curious how actual under-25s found their way into programming. • Recognizing when to use the mod operator

  I have a quick question about the mod operator. I know what it does; it calculates the remainder of a division. My question is, how can I identify a situation where I would need to use the mod operator? I know I can use the mod operator to see whether a number is even or odd and prime or composite, but that's about it. I don't often think in terms of remainders. I'm sure the mod operator is useful and I would like to learn to take advantage of it. I just have problems identifying where the mod operator is applicable. In various programming situations, it is difficult for me to see a problem and realize "hey! the remainder of division would work here!" Any tips or strategies? Thanks

• Why can't I see the 'dataset project' property in Visual Studio DataSet designer?

  Hi, I am trying to follow 'n tier app design' tutorials and they tell me to set the DataSet Project property from the Data Set Designer in VS, to split table adaptors and entities into seprate projects. I can't see that property! (I'm looking in the same place shown on the videos... all other properties match) Does anybody know why? • MS Access Draw line around detail section that can grow

  This really shouldn't be hard, I just can't figure out how to do it. I am making a proposal report that needs to have a border around it. The problem is to get the vertical lines on the side. I can't figure out how to get a line to grow and shrink based on the height of the detail section. I have used Crystal reports and sure wish Microsoft would learn a few things in regards to MS Access report writing! I am very comfortable with VBA so have no fears there. :-) Thanks, Jeff

  I would like to do a very simple task: add some markers in a Google Map using a list of addresses from an array. I have been thinking about generating the Google Maps JavaScript API code using ruby (printf) but this does not seem like a very clean and beautiful solution... I have read about YM4R for Ruby on Rails... my project is pretty simple and I have never worked with Ruby on Rails... I have also never used JQuerry... but I am very willing to learn to use this tools :) What do you think will be the best approach to generating the markers?

• Is it a Good Practice to Write HTML Using a StringBuilder in my ASP.NET Codebehind?

  I'm interested to hear from other developers their opinion on an approach that I typically take. I have a web application, asp.net 2.0, c#. What I usually do to write out drop downs, tables, input controls, etc. is in the code behind use StringBuilder and write out something like sb.Append(" I don't find myself using to many .net controls as I typically write out the html in the code behind. When I want to use jQuery or call JavaScript I just put that function call in my sb.Append tag like sb.Append("td...onblur='fnCallJS()'. I've gotten pretty comfortable with this approach. For data access I use EntitySpaces. I'm just kind of curious if this sort of approach is horribly wrong, ok depending on the context, good, time to learn 3.0, etc. I'm interested in learning and was just looking for some input.
