  hi, I'm new to DDD and i want to use entity framework v4.0 (shipped with .net 4.0) in my new project. since i have few time to learn DDD and entity framework, which books are good for me to read first?! i'm going to first read Domain-Driven Design Tackling Complexity in the Heart of Software by Eric Evan and next Pro Entity Framework 4.0 (Apress Scott Klein)... the problem here is Eric Evan's book is too abstract,I want to know if the Pro Entity framework 4.0 is complete enough i just skip the first book! in the end recommend me some good books in DDD and Entity Framework Thanks

• Will Delphi be there in future ?

  Yes, there is a version 2009. I know Delphi has a big community since years (10 plus)and I believe you could create native windows exe before Visual Basic got to speed (with all its dll's nighmare). But is it future-proof ? Is there a need or market for a non-crossplatform native all-in-one executable ? Will Embarcardero ex Codegear ex Borland continue to push it ? Why is it so expensive ? Who (non company) can afford it, in order to learn it ?

• Learning web development as I go

  Hey everybody, I've been seriously preparing to take the entrepreneurship leap. I've got a great partner, and we're going to take on some minor funding, and do the thing. Our product is web-based- I'll deem it YAWA (Yet Another Web Application). Both my partner and I have database and web development experience, and I've had a front-end developer in mind for a while. Except, well- he just bowed out. I know a fair amount about the associated technologies (XHTML, CSS, Javascript and some JQuery) interface-side, but I've never had to deal with real-world scenarios, eg cross-browser design. Am I going to be able to survive without this guy? Is it realistic to believe that I can learn the details as I go?

• 301 Redirects, and the correct regex to go with it

  Hi Guys, I have several URLs that I want to redirect to the same place, however these are dynamic URLs. The structure is something like this: http://www.mysite.com/declaration/list?[query_string] What I think would be ideal for this situation is to use some regex in my .htaccess file to redirect all these links to the sites home page. I was wondering if someone could help me with the regex for this situation. So far, I have this, but it doesn't work: RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^(.*)$ RewriteRule ^/declaration/list$ http://www.mysite.com/$ [R=301,L] My regex is weak to say the least, something I want to, and am trying to learn. I wondered about how the community felt about a Developer Network for developers. What are the added advantages and disadvantages of having such a TV network? • Does Team Foundation Server supports Checkpoints?

  My dev team used in the past MKS Source Integrity source control and we are not evaluating to migrate to TFS 2010. Some concepts and meaning are a bit different and we need sometime to learn how to do the same things we do before in TFS or how to change our approach. First of all, we used to do Checkpoints for each software release. MKS in this case does a snapshot of all source code files. You can later compare different checkpoints to see the code differences, or extract a whole checkpoint as a build. Does TFS have a similar feature? Do you know where can I read something about it? • What are some popular Git layout strategies?

  A fellow developer recently showed me a blog post with a nice visual representation of a git layout. He implied that this particular strategy was gaining a lot of popularity, but numerous searches here and through the Google have yet to turn up the blog post. The gist of it was that you had a trunk for main development, and a "side-trunk" for immediate customer-driven bug fixes. Main development had a branch, which was merged to trunk periodically for major releases, and then you had feature branches. There was a lovely diagram that clearly showed all this. Since I'd like to learn git better, I'd love to have that diagram available as an aide. It'd also be useful as a visual for trying to convince coworkers to switch to git. Does anyone happen to know what I'm talking about and can provide a link?

  I need to write something in my html code to convert digits of form 0123456789 to ?????????? (Arabic digits). the number of visitors is generated by blog service. and I want to convert its digits to Arabic. Counter: ????? ????????????? : <BlogSky:Weblog Counter /> ??? the Persian part of above code mean 'Number of visitors' and 'Persons' (from left to right). but digits are represented in latin (0123...). Is it possible to write something like a function in html? i want it to be a global one for using in weblogs. Note: I don't know anything about web programming languages. (and don't want to learn!). I'm not sure about language of above code. (html?)

• FileNotFound Exception when using TestDriven.NET and NUnit

  I'm Writing a simple pong game in C# and XNA 4.0 to learn unit testing. The tools used are TestDriven.NET and NUnit, all newest versions. The problem is, if I test the code with VS2010 internal debugger, everything runs fine, but when I use "Run Test(s)" from menu, the application chokes with error: Test 'WindowsGame1.Game1.TestGameMenu' failed: Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Content.ContentLoadException : Error loading "SpaceBackground". File not found. ----> System.IO.FileNotFoundException : Error loading "Content\SpaceBackground.xnb". File not found. (some more below...) So it stops when the first textre is going to be loaded. • Video learning for database design

  I'm trying to learn good relational database design (using mysql and php if that makes any difference). I've already done some database work, so I'm not totally clueless, but I suspect that my solutions may not have adhered to best practices for efficient searching, optimization, etc. Can someone suggest a good set of videos on the topic? If you know something is superb or has really made a difference in your own learning, please post your suggestion. Prefer videos, but books (as long as they're not too huge) are ok too. • Java and C#, how close are they?

  I've been using C/C++ and Python pretty seriously, but I now I see that a lot of new programming books use Java or C# as examples. I don't think I'll use Java or C# for the time being, but I guess I have to study one of the languages (or both of them) in order to read and understand the books. How similar Java and C#? If I learn Java, is learning C# almost free? Or vice versa? If I have to choose only one of the two languages, which would be better? Which has wider coverage in terms of programming language?

• How can I pass data from an aspx page to an ascx modal popup?

  I'm fairly new to ASP.NET and trying to learn how things are done. I come from a C# background so the code-behind portion is easy, but thinking like a web developer is unfamiliar. I have an aspx page that contains a grid of checkboxes. I have a button that is coded via a Button_Click event to collect a list of which rows are checked and create a session variable out of that list. The same button is referenced (via TargetControlID) by my ascx page's ModalPopupExtender which controls the panel on the ascx page. When the button is clicked, the modal popup opens but the Button_Click event is never fired, so the modal doesn't get its session data. Since the two pages are separate, I can't call the ModalPopupExtender from the aspx.cs code, I can't reach the list of checkboxes from the ascx.cs code, and I don't see a way to populate my session variable and then programmatically activate some other hidden button or control which will then open my modal popup. Any thoughts?

• How can I make a career in Formal Methods programming in USA?

  I've found that my (USA) professors recoil with a near-disgust when I ask them about how to pursue a career in Formal Methods programming. They say, "Oh, that stuff! That stuff is anal. You don't need that European POS to get a job." I'm sure I'll get a job without it, but Formal Methods interests me so much that I bet I'd like to make a career of it. I'd like to learn about Formal Methods at an American University and then work in that field here. I've found that even professors at more important universities than mine don't seem to welcome Formal Methods. Almost all FM research project webpages are semi-abandoned and moldering. Europe is where the action seems to be for this. Can anyone suggest a plan of attack, and along the way explain the antipathy to Formal Methods in the US? I'm a sophomore at a public university in the South.

• JTable.setRowHeight prevents me from adding more rows

  I'm working on a pretty simple Java app in order to learn more about JTables, TableModels, and custom cell renderers. The table is a simple table with 8 columns only with text in them. When you click on an "add" button, a dialog pops up and lets you enter the data for the columns. Now to my problem. One of the columns (the last one) should allow for multiple lines of text. I'm already putting HTML into the field, but it is not wrapping. I did some research and looked into JTable#setRowHeight(). However, once I use setRowHeight, I can no longer add rows to the table. The data is put into the table model, but it does not show in the table. If I remove the setRowHeight line, then it adds data just fine. Is there another step to adding data to my data model that I'm missing? Thanks a lot!

  I'm very new to programming (besides SQL and databases), but I ultimately want to master Cake PHP for web development. Now, given how new I am, I'm rather lost as to how I get started. Down the road, I want to use MVC framework so that I help myself be disciplined in the way I build. However, I know basic knowledge of PHP and OOP PHP are required. So my question is this: what are the right steps to mastering Cake PHP? I don't want to skip critical phases of learning before learning to Cake PHP. At the same time, I don't want to spend more time than required learning PHP if I can learn it directly through Cake PHP knowledge. Any advice would be appreciated.

  Hello there, I have been programming 10 years, mostly in vba and vb.net but I know c# well enough to program what I normally do. I yesterday was applying for a Senior c# position and I did so poorly on the induction test its not funny :) I have always found that for me the best way to learn and recall is via question's and answers (multichoice and short answer). That is, a question is posed and after I answer instant feedback is given as to whether I choose right or wrong and the reasons why. As such I was wondering if anyone knew of or could recommend a C# quiz website. Something like a daily c# quiz to keep my brain up to date and fresh if I'm not always programming in it. Not something wimpy either. Something that does everything. Paying is not an obstacle, id prefer to pay for a good resource than muck around. Thank you

• Self Assesstment Tests for Programmers

  I want to help the Dev team identify areas of knowledge (practical and theoretical) that they can work on. Though I am big believer in focusing on people's strengths being a good programmer requires (I think) being challenged by concepts and ideas that don't always come naturally. We work largely in the web app space using PHP & MySQL but better skills in data modelling, query optimisation, use of MVC and OOP etc. would help the team and the company a lot. I want to help the Dev team manage their careers, explore and expand their skills sets. Be all they can be and better than they were previously. I know its an idealistic goal but work must be about more than simply getting the work done. There should be some time to review, to learn, to grow and get better. Any thoughts, ideas, opinions and directions to tests or similar resources would be greatly appreciated.

• What's the best version control system for handling projects with graphics?

  I'm part of a small team (usually just two people), I handle the code, he handles the graphic design. In the past I've used CVS to handle version control of the code files, and while we've included the graphics in the repository, he hasn't derived nearly as much value from it as I have. Are there other packages that provide the better features for supporting graphics? The system would need to have an easy to use GUI interface, as I don't think it's fair to expect a graphic designer to learn command-line tools. Additional aspect: The client software needs to run smoothly on OS X (for the designer), and Windows (for the programmer).

• Hosting a complex online service

  I have an idea for a web-based service. The implementation is very complex. There will be very few users, and the traffice will be fairly low, but the server-side code could require a lot of resources. Ideally I'd need to have as much control over the servers as possible. How should I arrange hosting for this, when it comes time to release it to the public? Should I do the hosting myself, from my own servers? Trouble is, since I'm not quite an expert on .NET hosting, it might take time to learn and I might make big mistakes. The trouble with using a hosting company is, they might steal my idea, or else, it might cost a lot. Since I'm an un-funded startup I don't have a lot of money to throw at this.

  I'm working through Michael Hartl's tutorial trying to learn Rails for the first time, and I've run into some issues. I recently reinstalled the whole Rails Installer because I had apparently inadvertently deleted some important files. Now, when I try running a test I get the following error: sh.exe": /c/Program Files (x86)/ruby-1.9.3/bin/bundle: "c:/Program: bad interpre ter: No such file or directory I checked my PATH and attempted to use the solution outlined here: Bundle command not found. Bad Interpreter ..but putting quotation marks around "C:\Program Files (x86)\ruby-1.9.3\bin" didn't do anything for me. I ran $ rails -v and got the following output: $ rails -v ?[31mCould not find multi_json-1.3.6 in any of the sources?[0m ?[33mRun `bundle install` to install missing gems.?[0m So then I tried running $bundle install and got the following issue again: Tom@TOM-PC /c/sample_app (updating-users) $ bundle install sh.exe": /c/Program Files (x86)/ruby-1.9.3/bin/bundle: "c:/Program: bad interpre ter: No such file or directory I'd really appreciate any help -- I've spent 5+ hours today trying to get back on track and am still at a loss. From the documentation I learn that r.heatmap expects "a numeric matrix". How do I convert np.array to the required data type?

• Python os.path.join on Windows

  I am trying to learn python and am making a program that will output a script. I want to use os.path.join, but am pretty confused. According to the docs if I say: os.path.join('c:', 'sourcedir') I get "C:sourcedir". According to the docs, this is normal, right? But when I use the copytree command, Python will output it the desired way, for example: import shutil src = os.path.join('c:', 'src') dst = os.path.join('c':', 'dst') shutil.copytree(src, dst) Here is the error code I get: WindowsError: [Error 3] The system cannot find the path specified: 'C:src/*.*' If I wrap the os.path.join with os.path.normpath I get the same error. If this os.path.join can't be used this way, then I am confused as to its purpose. According to the pages suggested by Stack Overflow, slashes should not be used in join—that is correct, I assume?

• Foreign keys in MySQL?

  I have been slowly learning SQL the last few weeks. I've picked up all of the relational algebra and the basics of how relational databases work. What I'm trying to do now is learn how it's implemented. A stumbling block I've come across in this, is foreign keys in MySQL. I can't seem to find much about the other than that they exist in the InnoDB storage schema that MySQL has. What is a simple example of foreign keys implemented in MySQL? Here's part of a schema I wrote that doesn't seem to be working if you would rather point out my flaw than show me a working example.
