• Cannot flush the DNS on Snow Leopard 10.6.8

  I have an absolutely bizarre problem and it has STUMPED me.. I cannot seem to flush the DNS on my Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I have tried sudo dscacheutil -flushcache , i've tried dscacheutil -flushcache and it hasn't worked. I'm building a website, and changed the directories yesterday. Now when I check it on my other machine, it works fine. When I get somewhere from distance to check, it works fine, but it's seemingly stuck in the DNS on this machine as the CSS is not showing. Is there a hard-flush method (if that makes sense)? The two above did not work.

• Lotus Notes won't open a hyperlink/uri in a browser!

  I'm still new to Lotus, but I have LN 8.0.2, and have it set up to open hyperlinks "using the browser i have set as the default for this operating system" which in my case is Firefox 3.6.13. If I try to select "use the browser embedded in this client" then it just forgets it after I click save (ie if i go back into preferences it's reset to the default for this operating system option) Windows XP SP 3. Whenever I click on a link in an email...memo... then it does nothing and flashes an underscore underneath it. It's so basic and so annoying there must be something I'm missing. Any help please!

• Comparison of Unix shells

  Of the major Unix shells (bash, ksh, tcsh, zsh, others?), are there any compelling reasons to use one over another? Which is the most interactive/command-line friendly? Which is the most conducive/intuitive for writing scripts? Are there any major built-in features that one shell offers that others don't? Are any of these shells really good for one type of function, but not another? Or are they all pretty well-rounded/flexible? Is it just a matter of personal preference? I can make this community wiki if anyone prefers.

• Compare-Object gives false differences

  I have some problem with Compare-Object. My task is to get difference between two directory snapshots made at different times. First snapshot is taken like this: ls -recurse d:\dir | export-clixml dir-20100129.xml Then, later, I get second snapshot and load both of them: $b = (import-clixml dir-20100130.xml) $a = (import-clixml dir-20100129.xml) Next, I'm trying to compare with Compare-Object, like that: diff $a $b What I get is in some places files that were added to $b since $a, but in some -- files that were in both snapshots, and some files, that were added to $b, are not given in Compare-Object output. Puzzling, but $b.count - $a.count is EXACTLY the same as (diff $a $b).count. Why is that? Ok, Compare-Object has -property param. I try to use that: diff -property fullname $a $b And I get the whole mess of differences: it shows me ALL the files. For example, say $a contains: A\1.txt A\2.txt A\3.txt And $b contains: X\2.mp3 X\3.mp3 X\4.mp3 A\1.txt A\2.txt A\3.txt diff output is something like that: X\2.mp3 => A\1.txt <= X\3.mp3 => A\2.txt <= X\4.mp3 => A\3.txt <= A\1.txt => A\2.txt => A\3.txt => Weird. I think I don't understand something crucial about Compare- Object usage, and manuals are scarce... Please, help me to get the DIFFERENCE between two directory snapshots. • D Link DSL G624T Router will work wirelessly but not via cable

  I have a D Link router which works in providing a wireless internet connection for my main PC and secondary notebook. I have been advised that the internet connection to the main pc will be better if I wire the router directly to the PC. I have tried this and can not get a connection. I just keep getting the message network cable unplugged. I have had the ethernet adaptor checked out on the pc and the cable is good ( also checked out). Anything I can do or do I have a bad router. I have tried the cable in all 4 ports and the message is still the same.

• Can an UPS be too powerful?

  Our old network admin bought the top range UPS a few months ago but never came around to setting it up and is no longer with the company. Now the old UPS broke down and needs to be replaced, but an external company that did an audit said that that UPS won't work. Now we are no hardware specialists, but the difference in specs is a higher output from 5A to 8.8A meaning a higher output. But isn't the UPS supposed to give the server the required output anyway? This 'independent' audit does sell its own hardware including UPSes so I'm not sure how much bias they have. Is there a reason why we can't replace the old broken UPS with the new more powerful one? • Can the Nikon D50 be hacked to record video?

  I mean hacked in terms of software only, and minor hardware hacking if necessary, without of course breaking the camera. Also, if possible, video should be able to be recorded at an acceptable frame rate, around 20fps. thanks p.s. Reason for this question: Just to give some context before people tell me to buy a new camera! For still photography I now almost exclusively shoot film with a Nikon F3, and my D50 is gathering dust. I want to shoot some video of my Capoeria classes, for personal use, and thought maybe I could put my D50 to good use. Yes, I could buy a D5000 or older D90, but really I just want to shoot some video with my nice wide Nikkor lenses at no extra cost!

• Own mediawiki/wikipedia naming convention for pages

  I recently installed a mediawiki at home and I'm looking for a way to name pages. Let's say I have the following structure : Main - Dev - C# - Tips Main - Cooking - Mexixan Cooking - Tips Main - Annoying my girlfriend - Tips Each final page is a different Tips page. Naming them only "tips" won't work because I need three different pages. Now, I could name each of my tips page with its "path" (ex: main_cooking_mexican_cooking_tips) but it looks cumbersome and the problem is that, whenever I'll change the structure of my mediawiki, some pages will need to change their name in order to be corrects. Does it exist some convention to follow regarding this ? Thanks for your help !

• (Some) security perms in WinXP corrupted (shows GUID instead of username)

  I've been using my Win XP machine (part of a domain) over the holiday period, so until yesterday it hadn't rebooted for about five days. I used it yesterday perfectly fine and shut it down. When I switched it on this morning the majority (but not all) of my shortcut links in the Quick Launch toolbar showed as generic file icons. If you open the folder and get properties on one of the failing shortcuts it says ''Target type: This is not a valid shortcut''. Then in Outlook I noticed my signature wasn't showing (I checked my sent folder and the sig was ok yesterday). Checking the signature folder, I can't see the security tab on any of the sig files, and I have an access denied message on trying to open them. I can see the security tab on the signature folder itself, just none of the contents. If I try and use the parent folder's security tab and ''Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects'' it appears to work fine, but makes no actual difference. I logged in as administrator and saw that the owner of the files showed up as a GUID (clearly should've been my account in its place). Any ideas what might have made that happen? So far I haven't heard any similar complaints from anyone else at the office...

I am trying to get the firehose-announce.service to start and stop along with the firehose.service. • unlock database files when SQL server is idle

  In my development/test environment on my laptop, I can't back up the SQL server database files because the file handles are kept permanently open by SQL server (VSS doesn't work because the drive is truecrypted) I was hoping there may be some setting in SQL server that can make it unlock the data files after a certain period of inactivity and automatically open them again on demand, but I can't find anything. I don't really want to be dumping the database out every night because it's only a development environment. apart from stopping sql server before I do the backup is there any other solution?

• How to securely control access to a backend key server?

  I need to securely encrypt data in my database so that if the database is dumped, hackers are unable to decrypt the data. I'm planning on creating a simple key server on a different machine, and allowing the DB server access to it (restricted by IP address on the key server to permit the DB server). The key server would contain the key required to encrypt/decrypt data. However, if a hacker were able to get a shell on the DB server, they could request the key from the key server and therefore decrypt the data in the database. How could I prevent this (assuming all firewalls are in place, DB is not connected directly to the internet, etc)? i.e. is there some method I could use that could secure a request from the DB server to the key server so that even if a hacker had a shell on the DB server they'd be unable to make those same requests? Signed requests from the DB server could make issuing these requests less trivial - I suppose that'd help increase the amount of time it'd take to compromise the key server, something a hacker probably wouldn't have much of. As far as I can see, if someone can get a shell on the DB server everything's lost anyway. This could be mitigated by using one key per data item in the DB so at least there's not a single "master" key, but multiple keys that the hacker would need to access. What would be a secure method of ensuring requests from the DB server to the key server were authentic and could be trusted?

  I've ran into trouble with SOAP, I've never had this issue before and can't find any information on line that helps me solve it. I've tried passing params into the SoapClient constructor to define soap version but that didnt' help. I've tried the code on both a linux and windows install running Apache.   I have to write a simple demo for amount withdrawl from a joint Bank amount .Andy and Jen holds a joint bank account with number 123 . Suppose they have 100$ in their account .Jen and Andy are operating their account at the same time and both are trying to withdraw 90$ at the time being .My transaction Isolation is set to read-committed and both are able to withdraw money leaving the balance to -(minus)80$ although I have constraint that balance should never be less than 0. I am using hibernate .Is versioning only way to solve this problem or I should go for another Isolation level ?

  I'm finding it difficult to understand when it is necessary to create class methods. From what I've read, they are important for creating new objects, but I do not see how. • Windows Start Menu Not Staying on Top

  Hey everyone. I've had this problem since Windows Vista. I did a clean install with Windows 7 and hoped it would fix the problem. Also swapped out the video card just to rule out a strange driver issue. Here's what's happening. After running for some period of time (usually a few hours), the Start button/orb will loose it's "Chrome" and turn into a plain button that just says "Start." It will work fine for a while, but then the start menu will just stop showing. Additionally, when I hit Win+D to show the desktop, the entire taskbar completely disappears. I can get it back usually by moving/minimizing windows that may be overlapping where the start menu should show. Otherwise, it requires either a full reboot or I'll end up killing & restarting the explorer.exe process. • Laptop Asus P50IJ with Intel 4500M GMA output going to a Dell 1907FP external monitor will not allow

  Hello - I just purchased an Asus P50IJ-X2 laptop which has a Intel GMA 4500M video card running Windows7. At work I output this laptop to a Dell 1907FP LCD which has a maximum resolution of 1280x1024. Not matter what I do the Windows will not allow the laptop to set a resolution higher than 1024x768 to this LCD monitor. Ive even gone to the extent of downloading PowerStrip (I'd post a link but Im new and can only enter 1 url, if you google for powerstrip its the first option) to create a custom driver for my monitor thinking Windows was having a hard time seeing the available resolutions it would accept. However, powerstrip read the registery and properly sees the monitor and what its capable of so Im now at a complete loss as to why Windows7 will not allow me to set/use a 1280x1024 resolution for this external monitor (as my last laptop did running Vista). The Intel documentation (http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/quick-reference-guide-to-intel-integrated-graphics/) indicates that the GMA 4500M should be able to run up to a 2560x1600 max res. The Dell 1907FP specification states it can run up to a 1280x1024 res. But no matter what the computer will not allow me to set higher than a 1024x768. I'm completely baffled but I would really like to be able to output this laptop to a reasonable resolution, 1024x768 makes me feel like I'm using my mom's computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated! • Setting up a purely Node.js http server on port 80

  I'm using a fresh install of Centos 5.5. I have Node installed and working (I'm just using Node -- no apache, or nginx.), but I cannot figure out how to make a simple server on port 80. Node is running and is listening to port 80. I'm just using the demo app: var http = require('http'); http.createServer(function (req, res) { res.writeHead(200, {'Content-Type': 'text/plain'}); res.end('Hello World\n'); }).listen(80, "x.x.x.x"); console.log('Server listening to port 80.'); When I visit my IP, it does not work. I obtained my ipaddress using ifconfig. I've tried different ports. So there must be something I am missing. What do I need to configure on my server to make this work? I would like to do this without installing apache or nginx. Luke Edit-- Ok so, I installed nginx and started it up, to see whether or not it is related to node, and I don't see its welcome page. So it definitely has something to do with the server. Am I retrieving the IP Address correctly by running: ifconfig then reading the inet addr under eth0?
