• How can I take any function as input for my Scala wrapper method?

- by pr1001
Let's say I want to make a little wrapper along the lines of: def wrapper(f: (Any) => Any): Any = { println("Executing now") val res = f println("Execution finished") res } wrapper { println("2") } Does this make sense? My wrapper method is obviously wrong, but I think the spirit of what I want to do is possible. Am I right in thinking so? If so, what's the solution? Thanks!

• How to return this XML-RPC response in an array using PHP?

- by mind.blank
I'm trying to put together a WordPress plugin and I want to grab a list of all categories (of other WordPress blogs) via XML-RPC. I have the following code and it looks like it works so far: function get_categories($rpcurl,$username,$password){ $rpcurl2 = $rpcurl."/xmlrpc.php"; $params = array(0,$username,$password,true); $request = xmlrpc_encode_request('metaWeblog.getCategories',$params); $ch = curl_init(); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_URL, $rpcurl2); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_HEADER, false); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_HTTPHEADER, array("Content-Type: text/xml")); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, true); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_TIMEOUT, 10); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS, $request); $results = curl_exec($ch); $res = xmlrpc_decode($results); curl_close($ch); return $res; } If I use $res I get the following string as the response: Array If I use $results then I get: categoryId17 parentId0 descriptionTest categoryDescription categoryNameTest htmlUrlhttp://test.yoursite.com/?cat=17 rssUrlhttp://test.yoursite.com/?feed=rss2&cat=17 categoryId1 parentId0 descriptionUncategorized categoryDescription categoryNameUncategorized htmlUrlhttp://test.yoursite.com/?cat=1 rssUrlhttp://test.yoursite.com/?feed=rss2&cat=1 I need to pull out the names after description so Uncategorized and Test in this case. It's my first time coding in PHP. I got these results by echoing them to the page, so not sure if they get changed in that process or not... By the way I modified the above code from one that posts to a WordPress blog remotely so maybe I haven't set some of the options correctly? With var_dump($res) I get: array(2) { [0]=> array(7) { ["categoryId"]=> string(2) "17" ["parentId"]=> string(1) "0" ["description"]=> string(4) "Test" ["categoryDescription"]=> string(0) "" ["categoryName"]=> string(4) "Test" ["htmlUrl"]=> string(40) "http://test.youreventwebsite.com/?cat=17" ["rssUrl"]=> string(54) "http://test.youreventwebsite.com/?feed=rss2&cat=17" } [1]=> array(7) { ["categoryId"]=> string(1) "1" ["parentId"]=> string(1) "0" ["description"]=> string(13) "Uncategorized" ["categoryDescription"]=> string(0) "" ["categoryName"]=> string(13) "Uncategorized" ["htmlUrl"]=> string(39) "http://test.youreventwebsite.com/?cat=1" ["rssUrl"]=> string(53) "http://test.youreventwebsite.com/?feed=rss2&cat=1" } }

I have the code below implementing a NON-Blocking TCP acceptor. • Check mysql_query results if DELETE query worked?

- by Camran
I have a DELETE query which deletes a record from a mysql db. is there any way to make sure if the delete was performed or not? I mean, for a query to FIND stuff you do $res=mysql_query($var); $nr=mysql_num_rows($res); and you get nr of rows returned. Is there any similiar method for deletion of records? Thanks

@oracletechnet: Oracle Technology Network Newsletters Revisited "You may find this hard to believe, but some analysts contend that email newsletters are still among the most preferred methods of "information awareness" by developers today. And in our experience, the numbers back it up: subscriptions to Oracle Technology Network newsletters grow organically by 15% every year, even after you take continual list cleanup into account. (tags: oracle sun wsdl webservices DSEE netbeans jdeveloper) Nick Wooler: Iron-Clad Cloud: Secure Cloud Computing "One solution to the security problem with cloud services can be overcome using Service Oriented Security. The Oracle approach to using Service Oriented Security allows developers to pull from a centralized, authoritative source of identity services. This allows developers to build security into every application from the inside-out. This is critical to ensuring this is done in a standardized manner and most importantly it allows developers to develop without being security experts." -- Nick Wooler (tags: oracle sun security cloud saas) Andy Mulholland: A week of visits; Cisco, HP, Oracle, SAP and VMware (in alphabetical order!) "I now am considering that we should be thinking about ‘clouds’ in virtual way, by which I mean that a succession of virtual ‘clouds’ will need to exist, each possessing specific characteristics that suit certain types of services. Really it’s no different to what we see with servers today. Adding a hypervisor to a server adds new flexibility, but creating a virtualised environment means much more. What I suspect will happen is that we will start to use vendor specific approaches to building what I will term a physical cloud solution using their technology and approach to supporting a specific objective, but with time we will find these physical clouds will interoperate as a fully virtualised cloud environment." -- Andy Mulholland (tags: entarch enterprisearchitecture cloudcomputing virtualization) @fteter: Highlights From The Bright Lights - Tuesday #c10 Oracle Ace Director Floyd Teter of JPL with one last wrap-up of Collaborate 10. • Silverlight Cream for June 15, 2010 -- #882

- by Dave Campbell
In this Issue: Colin Eberhardt Zoltan Arvai, Marcel du Preez, Mark Tucker, John Papa, Phil Middlemiss, Andy Beaulieu, and Chad Campbell. From SilverlightCream.com: Throttling Silverlight Mouse Events to Keep the UI Responsive Colin Eberhardt sent me this link to his latest at Scott Logic... about how to throttle Silverlight -- no not that, you'd have to go to one of the *other* blogs for that :) ... this is throttling the mouse, particularly the mouse wheel to keep the UI from freezing up ... check out the demos, you'll want to read the code Data Driven Applications with MVVM Part I: The Basics Zoltan Arvai started a series of tutorials on Data-Driven Applications with MVVM at SilverlightShow... this is number 1, and it looks like it's going to be a good series to read. Red-To-Green scale using an IValueConverter Marcel du Preez has an interesting post up at SilverlightShow using an IValueConverter to do a red/yellow/green progress bar ... this is pretty cool. Infragistics XamWebOutlookBar & Caliburn With assistance from Rob Eisenburg, Mark Tucker was able to build a Caliburn sample including the Infragistics XamWebOutlookBar, and he's sharing his experience (and code) with all of us. Printing Tip – Handling User Initiated Dialogs Exceptions John Papa responded to a common printing problem by writing it up in his blog. Note this problem quite often appears during debug, so check it out... John also has a quick tip on an update to the PrintAPI in Silverlight 4. Automatic Rectangle Radius X and Y Phil Middlemiss has another great Blend post up -- this one on rounding off buttons... they look great to me, but he's looking for advice -- how about that Phil? They look great to me :) WP7 Back Button in Games Planning on selling 'stuff' in the Windows Phone Marketplace? Are you familiar with the required use of the Back Button? How about in a game? ... Andy Beaulieu discusses all this and has some code you'll want to use. Windows Phone 7 – Call Phone Number from HyperlinkButton Chad Campbell [no relation :) ] is discussing dialing a number from a hyperlink in WP7 - oh yeah, it's a phone as well :) -- I think I've only seen a number attempt to be called -- hmm... and we're not yet either because we all have emulators, but this is a good intro to the functionality for when we may actually have devices! • Are there any books that teach techniques for effective pair programming?

- by Paul D. Waite
I’ve just read the pair programming chapter of ‘Making Software’ by Andy Oram, and I’d like to try it when I next get an opportunity. The chapter mentions that in one of the studies, the subjects were initially given instruction on effective pair programming. Are there any books (or chapters of books) that I could read to get a good grounding in how to do pair programming effectively, so that I’m more prepared?

• Silverlight Cream for March 14, 2011 -- #1060

- by Dave Campbell
In this Issue: Lazar Nikolov, Rudi Grobler, WindowsPhoneGeek, Jesse Liberty, Pete Brown, Jessica Foster, Chris Rouw, Andy Beaulieu, and Colin Eberhardt. Above the Fold: Silverlight: "A Silverlight Resizable TextBlock (and other resizable things)" Colin Eberhardt WP7: "Retrofitting the Trial API" Jessica Foster Shoutouts: Rudi Grobler has a post up that's not Silverlight, but it's cool stuff you may be interested in: WPF Themes now available on NuGet From SilverlightCream.com: Simulating rain in Silverlight Lazar Nikolov has a cool tutorial up at SilverlightShow... Simulating rain. Nice demo near to top, and source code plus a very nice tutorial on the entire process. Making the ApplicationBar bindable Rudi Grobler has a couple new posts up... first this one on making the WP7 AppBar bindable... he's created 2 simple wrappers that make it possible to bind to a method... with source as usual! All about Splash Screens in WP7 – Creating animated Splash Screen WindowsPhoneGeek's latest is about splash screens in WP7, but he goes one better with animated splash screens. Lots of good information including closing points in more of a FAQ-style listing. Testing Network Availability Jesse Liberty's latest is on testing for network availability in your WP7 app. This should be required reading for anyone building a WP7 app, since you never know when the network is going to be there or not. Lighting up on Windows 7 with Native Extensions for Microsoft Silverlight Pete Brown's latest post is about the Native Extensions for Microsoft Silverlight or NESL library. Pete describes what NESL is, a link to the library, installing it, and tons more information. If you wanna know or try NESL... this looks like the place to start. Retrofitting the Trial API Jessica Foster paused on the way to shipping her WP7 app to add in the trial API code. Check out what she went through to complete that task, as she explains the steps and directions she took. Good description, links, and code. WP7 Insights #2: Creating a Splash Screen in WP7 In the 2nd post in his series on WP7 development, Chris Rouw is discussing a WP7 splash screen. He gives some good external links for references then gets right into discussing his code. Air Hockey for Windows Phone 7 Andy Beaulieu shares a tutorial he wrote for the Expression Toolbox site, using the Physics Helper Library and Farseer Physics Engine -- an Air Hockey game for WP7. A Silverlight Resizable TextBlock (and other resizable things) I think Michael Washington had the best comment about Colin Eberhardt's latest outing: "Another WOW example" ... drop this in the pretty darn cool category: an attached behavior that uses a Thumb control within a popup to adorn any UI element to allow the user to resize it! • Survey: How much data do you work with?

- by James Luetkehoelter
Andy isn't the only one that can ask a survey question. This is something I really curious about because many of the answers or recommendations or rants in blogs are not universably applicable to every database - small databases must sometimes be treated differently, and uber databases are just a pain (and fun at the same time). So, how would you classify most of the databases you work with: 1) Up to 50GB 2) 50-500GB 3) 500GB - 2TB 4) DEAR GOD THAT"S TOO MUCH INFORMATION! Share this post: email it!...(read more)

I have been currently researching Google and their approach to marketing the Android OS. Primarily using an open source technique with the Open Hand Alliance and out souring through third-party developers. I'm now keen to investigate their approach using various development life cycle models in the form of waterfall, spiral, scrum, agile etc. And i'm just curious to have some feedback from professionals and what approach they think Google would use to have a positive effect on their business. Thanks for your time Andy Rose
