    Can any one please suggest me the best approach to connect to mainframe from .net. I have to develop an web application, in which i have to follow NIEM standards for data exchange between two end clients. the interface i have to develop will be on .net. i don't have any knowledge on mainframe, i have come across that there are ODBC connectivity/ MQ series. i'm afraid which approach to follow on as i have less knowledge on the mainframe system. any suggestion would be really helpfully to me. any article , links or sample code will be greatly appreciated Thanks

  • Master's in Software Engineering vs. Master's in Computer Science: which degree is preferred by empl

    I've been building software professionally for 7 years and am considering a master's degree. I understand the difference between these two degrees as simply: MSCS is the theory while MSE is the practice. I'm equally interested in both and would be happy with either, although I'm curious how these degrees rank in the eyes of a potential employer. I could see two views that a hiring manager could possibly take: a MSCS is loftier and has an implied knowledge of Software Engineering an MSE is more practical and has an implied knowledge of Computer Science In my own experience I've seen both MSCS degree holders than cannot program at all while others are among the best programmers I've met, so of course actual ability will depend on the individual. My question is about the "on paper" value of these two degrees when seeking a job. All things considered, is one degree more hirable, higher-paying than the other?

  • Can the Windows Media Player COM control play AVI files from memory (instead of from a file)?

    I have a C# app, and I'm looking at using the Windows Media Player COM control to play animation and audio. So far, the only way I see of programatically controlling what the control is playing is to set its URL property to point to some file (I assume there's some way to pass in a playlist). Is there any way the WMP can render an AVI that is entirely in-memory, like a MemoryStream or something? If so, can WMP skip from one AVI to the next seamlessly (i.e. no glitch in either the audio or the video as it transitions from one to the next)? If WMP only plays files, is there some way to cue up a list of the files in advance of play start? If so, can WMP be made to skip from one file to the next without a brief interruption? Any knowledge or links to knowledge would be much appreciated.

    I have often fought the urge to ask questions that I know aren't appropriate on SO, because I personally haven't come across another online group who's opinions I would trust as much. What sites do you frequent that you have found good participation from a smart group of people where you can ask questions that are related to software, but not programming problems? This community also has a vast depth of knowledge about things related to software like marketing, graphics/UI, running a small business, working in bad jobs, etc. that would greatly benefit everyone else. Where do we go to tap all that knowledge? On stackoverflow.uservoice.com there is a popular suggested feature to sanction, or add to SO, a place to hold discussions that aren't about specific programming questions. It seems that the suggestion has been denied in the past though.

    I'm very new to programming (besides SQL and databases), but I ultimately want to master Cake PHP for web development. Now, given how new I am, I'm rather lost as to how I get started. Down the road, I want to use MVC framework so that I help myself be disciplined in the way I build. However, I know basic knowledge of PHP and OOP PHP are required. So my question is this: what are the right steps to mastering Cake PHP? I don't want to skip critical phases of learning before learning to Cake PHP. At the same time, I don't want to spend more time than required learning PHP if I can learn it directly through Cake PHP knowledge. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Equivalent of Bloch's Effective Java for C#

    I've jumped into the C# bandwagon and was wondering if there's an equivalent of Joshua Bloch's Effective Java for the C# world. I've already being able to apply some Java knowledge to C# given their similarity but I'm interested in knowledge to make the most effective use of C# specific features. For example, Generics are not implemented equally in Java and C#, so it's not clear to me if the Java Generic "techniques" will work in C# as well. I'm mostly interested in C# 3.0. That is (of course) unless you guys think I would benefit for looking into versions 1 and 2 features.

  • How can I learn the math necessary for working with computer vision?

    I know that computer vision involves a lot of math, but I need some tips about how programmers gain that knowledge. I've started to use the OpenCV library but I have some major problems in understanding how the math works in the algorithms. In college I have studied some math and we worked with matrices and derivatives, but I didn't pay to much attention to the subject. It seemed to be so difficult and useless from a programmer point of view. I suppose that there has to be some easy way to understand what a second derivative is without calculating an equation. (Derivatives are just an example) Do you have any tips for me about how can i gain such knowledge? A forum, book, link, advice, anything?

  • How does jQuery .data() work?

    My Javascript knowledge is pretty limited. Instead of asking several javascript questions I got the "message" from Stack overflow and started using jQuery right away in order to save me some time. However several times I do not undestand the "magic" behind jQuery and I would love to learn the details. I want to use .data() in my application. The examples are very helpful. I do not understand however WHERE these values are stored. I inspect the webpage with Firebug and as soon as .data() saves an object to a dom element, I do not see any change in Firebug (either HTML or Dom tabs). I tried to look at jQuery source, but it is very advanced for my Javascript knowledge and I lost myself. So the question is: Where do the values stored by jQuery.data() actually go? Can I inspect/locate/list/debug them using a tool?

  • Is a sharepoint developer technically "equipped" to do custom app dev and vise-versa?

    This may be an opinion based question, but it's something that I wanted to ask (even if it does end up getting closed or deleted). I do custom app dev (asp.net/aspMVC) and have absolutely no knowledge about sharepoint and was wondering: If you have a "rock solid" custom app dev, asp.net/aspMVC web developer can he jump into sharepoint development fairly easily? What about the other way around? Does a seasoned sharepoint developer have the "chops" to do custom app dev using asp.net/aspMVC? By no means do I want to offend any sharepoint developers or any custom app dev developers. I'm merely trying to see how much knowledge you can take with you when going from one type of development to another.

    Hopefully a simple question: I've a plugin which uses a set of tables (kb_items, kb_item_tags, etc). and I'd like to be able to access these models from another controller (say, my Pages controller), thus: class PagesController extends AppController{ function knowledgebase(){ $items = $this->KbItem->findAll(...); } } I am admittedly breaking the rules a little (by not placing this controller inside the knowledge base plugin), but this in this case its a custom page that doesn't need to be part of the knowledge base plugin code base.     Setup I am using Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect Professional edition 7.5: http://www.sparxsystems.com.au/ and MS PowerPoint. Problem I have various audiences for presentations requiring display in MS PowerPoint -- ranging from managers to developers, whose depth of technical knowledge and requirements for knowledge varies. Question I have tried various settings for fonts, colors, and so on, but displaying a diagram with any level of detail (even simple class diagrams). These diagrams are very difficult to fit into a PowerPoint slide and render well when using a projector or a Live Meeting. Am I on the wrong path here, or is there a better/correct way to accomplish this? Thank you for the help, -bn

I have decided to do something on adaptive websites that implements customisation, personalisation and basically adaptation via heat maps and weblogs. So for a prototype i would be designing a website for tertairy level students and see if these technologies improve the usbability of the site. i would model it after my school's website.     Hello everyone, In the perfect world, all the software developers would work with the cutting edge technologies, creating systems from the scratch. In the real life, almost all of us have to maintain software from time to time (unlucky ones do it on a regular basis). Personally I first 2 years of my career was fixing bugs in the company that no longer exists (it has been taken up by Oracle). And probably the biggest lesson I've learned that time - despite of the pressure, always try to get as much information about the domain as possible (even if it's irrelevant to fixing a specific bug or adding a feature) - abstract domain knowledge doesn't lose value as fast as knowledge about trendy frameworks or methodologies. What lessons have you learned from maintenance?

    I have found Design patterns certification at the Brainbehch. I have heard from people who passed it, that there are many Language-specific patterns questions, mostly from Java and C++. I think that this certification can: force me to improve my skills on Object oriented design and design patterns; improve and structure my knowledge of the domain; give real estimate of my knowledge, which is useful issue itself The only confusion I have about this certification, is that I have to learn C++/Java language specific design patterns, while I mostly do PHP development and don't want to switch to C++/Java. I'm familiar with Java & C++ syntax, read lots of books about different subjects with code snippets in this programming languages. I think, that if I pass well all concepts except language specific patterns at certification, it won't be very good, because this concepts will gain quite low results. What would you recommend in this particular circumstance?

  • Tutorials for an experienced C# user to learn C++

    Are there any good resources for learning C++ that a C# user could use, which don't require knowledge of C? I have quite a good knowledge of C# via courses in my University's game development program (in a 300 level course right now) but now I need to use C++ for a project. I would use a beginner tutorial but they are so hard for me to follow and learn the basic syntax because they start so slowly. I found a few of tutorials for switching from C++ to C#, but none in the other direction. I do have a little bit of Objective C practice from iPhone programming as well.
