  I am trying to use grub-customizer in 12.10 which ran in 12.04. I now get error grub-mkconfig couldn't be executed successfully. error message: Generating grub.cfg ... • Network connection on an Acer Aspire 5253?

  Brand new to Ubuntu and PCs for that matter. I've been a Mac user all my life but wanted to try Ubuntu on the cheap, so I bought an Acer Laptop 5253-BZ893 and i got Ubuntu 10.10 installed with no problem. The only problem i have is, that i get no network connection options, wired or wireless. I just get No Network Devices Available. The computer came with Windows 7 installed and i am able to connect to my wireless network fine using Windows, so i know the computer works. Also i've been searching forums and google for hours trying to figure out why I can't get a network connection in Ubuntu but so far no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

• Could not write bytes: broken pipe - looking for log of removed packages

  I have a dual boot system with 12.04 and windows 7. Ubuntu worked fine yesterday but this morning upon boot I get subject. Searched the forums and unsuccessful with recovery. I tried sudo gedit /var/log/apt/history.log to see the log of removed packages, but get the following... ** (gedit:976): WARNING **: Command line 'dbus-launch --autolaunch=2d7d18532e9953bc8a2b852e00000007 --binary-syntax --close-stderr' exited with non-zero exit status 1: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n Cannot open display: Run 'gedit --help' to see a full list of available command line options. • BleachBit: How to Completely Clear URL History in Firefox?

  14.04 / Firefox 29.0 I've been using Bleachbit to clear usage/file history, and for the most part it works great. However, it doesn't seem to clear the website hostnames out of the URL, at all. These addresses are not bookmarked. Also, the total URL isn't preserved, just the hostname. Visit site http://www.bluesnews.com/some_random_URL_string Exit Firefox Run Bleachbit, with ALL Firefox options selected Restart Firefox Check history: completely empty, other than bookmarked sites. www.bluesnews is NOT bookmarked Type "blue" which is Firefox automatically completes as "http://www.bluesnews.com/" Alternate Step #3: Use Firefox's built-in "Clear History" and select ALL entries with a time frame of "Everything". Same result as above. My inquiry in BB forums hasn't been responded to. I found Dan's proposed solution, however changing autocomplete in about:config only turns off the function, it doesn't actually stop storing URLs.

• Photos - do I really need to look for the author and ask his permission when posting them on my site?

  When I find a photo somewhere on the internet, without any explicit information of whether I can re-publish it on my own website, without any hint of who is the owner/author of that photo, can I still do it? I'm puzzled here cause I've seen like millions of websites, often very big, that repost photos, most probably found via google and it's VERY unlikely they bothered to look for and contact the author of that photos. Is every one of that sites likely to be sued at any moment? What about the case of forums and content provided by users - there is virtually no way of prevention here.

• Is C++ really a bad language for beginners? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Is C++ suitable as a first language? 24 answers I'm learning C++ right now, and it's the first language I'm learning. I keep seeing on stackexchange and other forums (Reddit, etc.) that I should drop C++ and learn a higher level language like Python or Java. The only arguments I see are that "C++ is harder to learn and is more low-level than others." which don't really give a reason NOT to learn it. I want to know if there are any actual reasons for dropping C++ and taking up another, "easier" language. Or if I should keep focusing on it, and just learn others later (which is what I plan on doing).

• Touchpad doesn't work after logging in

  The touchpad of my laptop fails to work soon after I login to Ubuntu. I;ve gone through several threads in forums regarding the same and have tried out : gconftool -set boolean ... command I;ve even tried to reboot the system in recovery mode, also I;ve unchecked the System - Preferences - enable touchpad while key type and restarted. None of the above methods which did work for few seem to work for me. Please help me. How can I fix the touchpad issue in Ubuntu 11.10 without a reinstall? I am using 64 bit Oneiric, on Dell Inspiron

• Kubuntu screensaver won't autostart

  Am using Ubuntu Lucid + kubuntu-desktop. NVidia works fine. Screensavers set to autostart & worked fine after initial install. Now screensaver attempted to start (brief flash of black only) but since quit doing that.. All screensavers work fine in Test mode. Is there a file entry that controls this?. kde/autostart is empty - should there be an entry here? Would the log files show up any relative errors? I am a newbie & the log info is way out of my league! Have not found any relative posts here or other forums. I would appreciate suggestions.

• WHy CAps lock is too slow to turn off in Ubuntu?

  *TH*is is a strange problem. *NO*tice how the beginning of my sentences include two capitals? Well, over the years I have developed a terrible habit... and it may be too late to fix. Instead of holding shift like a normal person to capitalize my works, I hit Caps Lock, then hit the letter, then hit Caps Lock again. PRetty weird huh? I Took an official government typing test recently and scored 99 words a minute, so it hasn't been a huge hindrance until now that I use Ubuntu. IN Ubuntu, often when I do my crazy method of typing, the Caps LOck won't turn off fast enough. IT's not my keyboard. I didn't have this problem in WIndows. IT's extremely annoying. Is there a cure for this? Took the question from Ubuntu forums because it's just explaining the same problem I am having here.

• Geographic location settings

  I am building an website. It has an .nl domain. Now only my domain is showing up on google.nl I hope I can change this somehow that it could be findable in all google's (like google.com / co.uk) and so on. If I look on google forums. They say go to webmaster tools and change your geographic position over there. But I have added this site and I am not able to change it there because there is no select box. I dont have any idea were to search (yes I searched on google offcourse) or where to ask for this special problem. So maybe here can someone redirect me or explain me what is possible and what not.   first of all, i have to say i am new in using linux! i have installed ubuntu 11.04 and i wanted chenged its interface by macbuntu 10.10 and i've done it but the problem is that genie effect is not actived until now so i googled in many forums and i faund out that i must change my compizconfig manager! i've done it but when i try to use this command "compiz --replace"! my laptop crash that means i could not move any windows or terminal! i could not miniminze or close them??! what i am supposed to do for solviling this crash??? best regards, iman

  First of all I'm 26 and I'm asking this question because I want to see how do you manage your time. Also I'm interested how do the programmers with a family(wife, several kids) manage their time. I'm asking this due the fact that I'm working aprox 7,5 hours at work (9 to 5), spent 1,5 hours on the way to/from workplace, and when I'm home I must cook/clean/etc and LEARN! And I have the impression that I don't have enough time to learn. Did you have a period similar in your life? To want to learn another language/improve your development/other skills? I saw here and on SO that there are a lot of peoples with +10k points, this in my mind means that they stay on blogs/forums more than 15 hours a day.   I have been creating a custom live CD of Ubuntu 11.10 using remastersys, everything goes well except that the live session asks for a login. the login is automatically set as "custom" and the password is blank. this is fine, but I would rather it went direct to the desktop in a live session as you would expect from other distro live cds. I have asked on the remastersys forums, the question has gotten a lot of views, but no answer as of yet, I am wondering has anyone here remastered a distro and come across the login problem, and if so, how did you fix it?

• Help with intel Imac 2008 Audio not working

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 and I get no audio except if i insert speakers and set them as headphones. This means really weird feedback and little volume. i'd like to set it back to the mac's default speakers but currently no matter what graphical interface i go into such as Audio or Alsamixer i can not fix the problem.Ive run alsamixer and looked thoroughly throught the forums but cannot find the answer to my problem. When i input cat /proc/asound/cards i get 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel HDA Intel at 0x50600000 irq 47 Any help would be very much appreciated and as a newcomer i would be glad to give you any information you need.   I recently installed ubuntu onto an extra hard drive and everything booted correctly. However, my Linksys wireless card is not working. I went though all the forums and walk throughs and I know that I need to install the b43 legacy firmware to get the card to work. When I try to install the files, I keep getting the message in Terminal saying "No such file or directory" for every file i need to run. It's Ubuntu 11.10 on a dell optiplex gx280. Also, the "pool" file that is supposed to be on the file system is not there

  when I start the computer, makes a big high pitch sound and the only thing I can see on the screen is "[[23" written everywhere . I have to start it always through the recovery mode. Ubuntu desktop screen does not flick, but every window that can maximmize and minimize does it like crazy. Like firefox browser, terminal, vlc.. • Move site to new domain divided by language across subdomains

  I managed to find a nice domain for a fairly fledgling site of mine that actually hasn't been parked by scumbag squatters. Given the upcoming move I'm thinking I'd take the opportunity to split the content across subdomains according to language, much like wikipedia for example: current: www.old-domain.com/en/subject # English www.old-domain.com/subjecto # Spanish (default so not locale in url) proposed en.new-domain.com/subject es.new-domain.com/subjecto The advantage of doing this is a fairly competitive keyword such that I may wish to put a copy of my application on a Spanish slice in order to gain a few serp's. Also pure vanity. Google's webmaster tools allows me to move to the new domain and I can add the root domain and the subdomains but forward to only one. I'll 301 from the old domain appropriately but is there anything I should know about webmaster tools in this respect where effectively I'm moving to two addresses? (Feel free to dissuade me from doing this if it's a bad idea in comments.) I've now asked this same question on google's forums.

  While developing and testing a site on local network I have noticed that while IE/FireFox would display the images coming from URL's like "http:\mypc" or "http:\localhost" or ip adress on the netwrok , google chrome on Galaxy, Windows Machine, or google Android will not display the images. After having burned too many hours trying various CSS, image src tag, html document description tricks, I have given up. During my search I found (and lost) the link to chrome forums regarding this issue that seemed to say it is just so by users. Anyone has any more information on weather it is possible to view images on local host/computer name on netwrok or ip adress?

• Out of range on shut down, Log Out, Restart and Suspend

  I have looked extensively on the help forums but haven't found a similar problem. Whether I want to Shut Down, Restart, Log Out or Suspend, as soon as I select my desired option the screen goes black with a message (Out of Range displayed in the middle of the screen. No combination of keys frees the screen and I have to manually hold the power button on my PC to shut it down. There is no problem on start up. My computer is a dual boot with Windows 7.
