• Best Version control for lone developer

  I'm a lone developer at the moment; please share you experiences on what is a good VC setup for a lone developer. My constraints are; I work on multiple machines and need to keep them synced up Sometimes I work offline I'm currently using Subversion(just the client to a remote server), and that is working ok. I'm interested in mecurial and git DVCS, but none of their use-cases make sense to my situation. EDIT: I've migrated my active development to Fossil http://www.fossil-scm.org/ after trialing it with a client. I really like the features to autosync my repositories(reducing accidental forks), the documentation support(both wiki and embedded/versioned) that supports my need to document the code and the project in different spaces, the easy to configure issue tracker, nice access control, skinnable web interface and helpful community.

• UILabel: Using the userInteractionEnabled method on a label

  Hello again. I am wondering if anyone has used the userInteractionEnabled method on a UILabel to allow the label to act like a button (or just to fire off a method). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers! Update (4/30/09 @1:07pm) Clarification: I have a standard InfoButton and next to it I want to place a label with the text "settings" and I would like the label to function like the button (which flips over to a settings screen. So, basically I need to tie the already defined showSettinsView to the "infoLabel" label; a user clicks on the infoButton or infoLabel and the method fires off. The infoButton is already working and is using an IBAction to trigger the method. I would like to know how to wire up the label to implement the same method. That is all. Cheers!

• Algorithm for Source Control System?

  I need to write a simple source control system and wonder what algorithm I would use for file differences? I don't want to look into existing source code due to license concerns. I need to have it licensed under MPL so I can't look at any of the existing systems like CVS or Mercurial as they are all GPL licensed. Just to give some background, I just need some really simple functions - binary files in a folder. no subfolders and every file behaves like it's own repository. No Metadata except for some permissions. Overall really simple stuff, my single concern really is how to store only the differences of a file from revision to revision without wasting too much space but also without being too inefficient (Maybe store a full version every X changes, a bit like Keyframes in Videos?)

  It seems like a lot of people here and on many programmer wikis/blogs/ect. elsewhere really dislike VSS. A lot of people also have a serious dislike for cvs. In many places I have heard a lot of differing opinions on whether or not using VSS or cvs is better or worse then using no source control, please rate the worst and explain why!!!!! you rated them this way. Feel free to throw in your own horrible system in the rankings. If you feel it depends on the circumstances try to explain the some of the different scenarios which lead to different rankings. (note:I see a lot of discussion of what is better but little of what is worse.) second note: while both answers are nice I'm looking less for good replacements and more for a comparison of which is worse and more importantly why!

• How to version control config files pragmatically?

  Suppose we have a config file with sensitive passwords. I'd like to version control the whole project, including the config file as well, but I don't want to share my passwords. That could be good, if this config file: password=secret foo=bar becomes password=* foo=bar and the other users of the vcs could also set up the password on they own. To ignoring the file isn't a good approach, the developers should be aware, if the config file changes. Example: Local version: password=own_secret foo=bar config file in vcs: password=* foo=bar Then suddenly, the config file changes: password=* foo=bar baz=foo And the local version would become for each developer: password=own_secret foo=bar baz=foo This is my solution. How could I achieve this behaviour? How do you store your config files? Is there a way to do that, or should I hack something?

• Table View Page Control Code

  Hi Everyone this is what i want to achieve 1) Have a page control that allows user to do a swipe to 6 different pages 2) each page is a table view controller 3) everything is done via code NOT IB The tutorials that are i find either use VIEW CONTROLLER or is done via IB. I am not very good with IB and prefer to have everything done via coding. I have a TableViewController.h and TableViewController.m When the user navigate to the TableViewController view, my application will display a table view (filled with some information), when the user swip to the next page, another page (table view) will appear with another set of information... I am very new to objective-c and iphone programing...can some one pls guide me on how to achieve the above or is there another way to doing things? oh yar....i have a tab bar controller as my root controller...and for one of the tab (tab A) i have a navigation controller and my TableViewControllers falls inside tab A.   Please excuse me for probably a newbie hundred-times-chewed question. I have no experience with version control systems except of using Visual Source Safe in a project done by 2 people sitting in front of each other (which has shown VSS quite sack of boulders, not anything useful). Right now I am looking to grok-in using some modern VCS. Here are the preferences in descending priority order: Platform-agnostic. Pretty pleasant to use With Visual Studio 2010 on Windows as well as With NetBeans 6.9 and Eclipse 3.6 on Linux and Mac. Convenient and efficient for mutually-dependent projects done by teams of 1-10 and consisting of files of quite a diverse selection of types. Including early-stage projects with unstable design and experimenting. Modern. As fresh and future-technology-feature-rich as possible. Free & open-source. Should I take a closer look at SVN, Mercurial, GIT, Bazaar, or something else?

• How to handle concurrency control in dynamic data?

  I've been quite impressed with dynamic data and how easy and quick it is to get a simple site up and running. I'm planning on using it for a simple internal HR admin site for registering people's skills/degrees/etc. I've been watching the intro videos at www.asp.net/dynamicdata and one thing they never mention is how to handle concurrency control. It seems that DD does not handle it right out of the box (unless there is some setting I haven't seen) as I manually generated a change conflict exception and the app failed without any user friendly message. Anybody know if DD handles it out of the box? Or do you have to somehow build it into the site?

• Newbie question: Creating a custom control

  Hi, I have an ASP.Net site, in which I am using a ListView with a Datapager. Apparently there is a bug with the Datapager, where it crashes if there is an empty ampersand (&) in the querystring. This is a known issue: https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=357344&wa=wsignin1.0#tabs I see that there is a workaround given, but did not understand how to implement it. • How to get cheap version control?

  Hello, I'm a programmer, contractor, self experimenter and so on. I'd need to have cheap version control. I've been working with Subversion and recently with Mercurial. I've seen around many cheap hosting but, even if they are great (like BitBucket), many of them don't allow many private projects (1 or 2). Much of the code I need to keep on VC is not open, maybe because it is stuff I'm working on for clients, or maybe because it's code I usually need for my development, but it is not intended and usable as a open source project. Now, I've a cheap web hosting, with unlimited space and free mysql. I CAN'T install Mercurial or SVN on those machinese, but I was asking myself if is it there a way to use a common CVS with it, with "common" I mean something that has its good IDE plugins (Eclipse or Netbeans) that may avoid me to write commands by hand.   I am a basic SVN user now trying to learn GIT for a new position. I am trying the usual reading docs and watching videos. However after doing all that I still feel that there is a lot that I do not know. I was wondering if there is a place like project Euler for programming languages, that provides a series of exercises that you can do just to increase your confidence and test your knowledge about a version control system. Something thats generic enough and gets you up to speed with how to do basic things. This could also serve as a comparison point of sorts between multiple VCSs, that would show what things are easy in which VCS. If there is nothing I was planning to document my journey in learning GIT and the create an exercise of this sort.

• Why is distributed source control considered harder?

  It seems rather common (around here, at least) for people to recommend SVN to newcomers to source control because it's "easier" than one of the distributed options. As a very casual user of SVN before switching to Git for many of my projects, I found this to be not the case at all. It is conceptually easier to set up a DCVS repository with git init (or whichever), without the problem of having to set up an external repository in the case of SVN. And the base functionality between SVN, Git, Mercurial, Bazaar all use essentially identical commands to commit, view diffs, and so on. Which is all a newcomer is really going to be doing. The small difference in the way Git requires changes to be explicitly added before they're committed, as opposed to SVN's "commit everything" policy, is conceptually simple and, unless I'm mistaken, not even an issue when using Mercurial or Bazaar. So why is SVN considered easier? I would argue that this is simply not true.

• How to store static content across branches in a single location in version control

  [Just a random thought] I have a pdf doc that is downloaded when the user clicks on 'help' on my website. Now, this is a pretty huge document and is saved in version control (SVN) and is thus copied for all branches that exist in SVN. This is static content and something that developers are not working on, and does not change often. Is there a more efficient way to store it (that would not hamper local deployments) that would make SVN checkouts and updates relatively faster. I know the benefit we get is not huge, this is something that came to my head none the less.

• When to use Version Control?

  I am a lone developer, developing Web Sites/Apps in PHP. I dont work with anybody, I use a framework so I dont create libraries for my apps (most of the time). I have read a lot about Version Control and its benefits, but I dont understand how it would benefit somebody like me. The biggest benefit I can see it having is that if I posted the code on a remote server I could work from anywhere on any computer, but I carry my laptop like I carry my phone so again I dont see much of a reason there. Can somebody please explain to me in a simple manner the reasons for going with a VCS, and give me some good free ones I should try? Are there any hidden benefits/scenarios that you can think of that may sway me in any direction one way or the other. Thanks

• Problems after adding Control dynamically on Panel

  Hello, I have added an View List onto a Panel like that: panelComponent.Controls.Add(viewListComponent); Everthing works just fine. Mouse Events are handled, Repaint works. But one: I cant dynamically move it around. If i change the control.Top Variablen it just sit there and nothing. Its clued to the top left corner. Resizing the right and bottom line works just fine! I did it without dynamically adding and than no Problem. Hope you can help. Thomas

• Proper permission and directoy location for Git Version Control

  I am using Git Version Control on an remote server and I have set up a repository that multiple people will be using to push/fetch from. I have put the repo under /srv/subdir/git/.git I have been experiencing problem after problem it seems like. a) Is this location suitable for handling a project that will need to be accessed/modified by multiple developers and a designer? Or is there a better location? b)Do I need to modify the permissions on the subdir/ and git/ directories in order to allow remote access? If I do what is the appropriate permissions I should allow? I know this is a faily long request/question, but unfortunately like many other topics with well covered documentation, documentation does not always cover best practices. I would appreciate anybodies advice and suggestions? Thanks

• Maintaining stored procedures in source control

  How do you guys maintain your stored procedures? I'd like to keep versions of them for a few different reasons. I also will be setting up cruisecontrol.net and nant this weekend to automate builds. I was thinking about coding something that would generate the create scripts for all tables/sprocs/udf/xml schemas in my development database. Then it would take those scripts and update them in source control every couple hours.... Ideally, I'd like to make this some sort of plugin/module for cruisecontrol.net. Any other ideas?

  Is there any way how to propagate properties from child control into parent - so I can access property like - Parent.Property1 instead of Parent.Child.Property1 ? I cant use inheritance - my parent cant be extended child type - its inherited from different class. • IIS version control with Mac clients

  We are in a unique situation here at work. Most of our websites are on an IIS server, but our developers are on Macs. We need some kind of way to do version control of our websites, but want to manage them locally on our Macs. Is there any way to do this, short of Powershell? Most of our websites are in PHP, so we don't want a solution that is geared toward ASP.NET. Also, I'm not clear if there is a way to use Subversion with IIS. Can someone help me out?

  Sometimes I write blog posts mainly so that I can find stuff when I need it later. This is such a blog post. Of late I have been writing lots of deployment scripts and I am fan of putting big labels into deployment scripts (which, these days, reside in SSDT) so one can easily see what’s going on as they execute. Here’s such an example from my current project: which results in this being displayed when the script is run: In case you care….PM_EDW is the name of one of our databases. • Fade out Label / Button / Status Bar with GTK

  What is the easiest way to fade out and fade in elements in Python / GTK 3? Coming from webdevelopment, my initial take on this problem was to call c = widget.get_style_context(), c.remove_class('visible'), c.add_class('invisible') but that didn't work out (Do I have to call something like "redraw"?) I also added a transition to the GTK CSS. Thanks, Wolf EDIT: I might specify what I would like to achieve: I have this "statusbar" which is just a vertical container on my app (like in the screenshot on top of this page http://uberwriter.wolfvollprecht.de/). If the mouse is not moving, I want to fade all that stuff out (also to preserve computing power // no recalculation of word- and char count) and to minimize "distraction"). I already found the appropriate event to listen to (motion-notify-event), so now I only need to add a simple fade out and a timeout. If someone can point me to a solution, be it with clutter or cairo, I would be very happy.

• Aggregating Excel cell contents that match a label [migrated]

  I'm sure this isn't a terribly difficult thing, but it's not the type of question that easily lends itself to internet searches. I've been assigned a project for work involving a complex spreadsheet. I've done the usual =SUM and other basic Excel formulas, and I've got enough coding background that I'm able to at least fudge my way through VBA, but I'm not certain how to proceed with one part of the task. Simple version: On Sheet 1 I have a list of people (one on each row, person's name in column A), on sheet 2 I have a list of groups (one on each row, group name in column A). Each name in Sheet 1 has its own row, and I have a "Data Validation" dropdown menu where you choose the group each person belongs to. That dropdown is sourced from Sheet 2, where each group has a row. So essentially the data validation source for Sheet 1's "Group" column is just "=Sheet2!$a1:a100" or whatever. The problem is this: I want each group row in Sheet 2 to have a formula which results in a list of all the users which have been assigned to that group on Sheet 1. What I mean is something the equivalent of "select * from PeopleTab where GROUP = ThisGroup". The resulting cell would just stick the names together like "Bob Smith, Joe Jones, Sally Sanderson" I've been Googling for hours but I can't think of a way to phrase my search query to get the results I want. Here's an example of desired result (Dash-delimited. Can't find a way to make it look nice, table tags don't seem to work here): (Sheet 1) Bob Smith - Group 1 (selected from dropdown) Joe Jones - Group 2 (selected from dropdown) Sally Sanderson - Group 1 (selected from dropdown) (Sheet 2) Group 1 - Bob Smith, Sally Sanderson (result of formula) Group 2 - Joe Jones (result of formula) What formula (or even what function) do I use on that second column of sheet 2 to make a flat list out of the members of that group?

• Customising Google Maps breaks highway label blocks

  I'm trying to customise a Google map to use shades of a particular colour. It's working nicely except the blocks that contain major road names / numbers is illegible. I've figured out how to target styles to those elements, but setting the 'color' value sets both text and background to that colour. • Gparted funkiness - won't recognize 1TB, full-hdd /home partition, but recognizes ext4 and /home label

  I have a 1TB SATA hard disk from my old desktop, and the entire thing is an ext4 /home partition (/, /boot, and swap were all on another hdd). It is now in a USB2 enclosure and I want to use it to back up my current laptop /home. To do this I need to shrink the /home partition on the 1TB backup drive. It only uses about 500GB so that shouldn't be a problem, I'll start the laptop with an Ubuntu live USB, plug in the 1TB drive, and use Gparted to shrink the 1TB /home partition to ~500GB. Then I can create a second partition in the newly freed space, and cp -ax my laptop's /home over to it. Unfortuntely, Ubuntu Live USB can detect and mount the external hdd, and Gparted can see it's there, but Gparted can't read it and hence can't resize it. Disk Utility reports the drive is fine, no errors, so I'm not sure what's the problem. See linked pics, worth a thousand words. Anyone know what the problem is here? Any pointers in the right direction much appreciated.

• SQL Source Control with Vault Support Officially Released

  HOORAY!  It is officially here!  Today, Red-Gate officially released SQL Source Control version 2.1 with support for Vault. While we have been happily and successfully running the beta version (a.k.a. the Early Access release) of Red-Gate SQL Source Control with support for Vault for quite a while, it is good to have the official RTM (or GOLD, or PROD, or whatever you call your “no-longer-in-beta”) release of the product.
