I'd like to buy a laptop that'll run the latest and greatest Ubuntu install. Is there an online vendor (big or small) that will sell me hardware guaranteed to work with Ubuntu Linux? Is this even a problem anymore?
My laptop (hp dv6500t) fan is really loud! What can I do to decrease the sound? I checked the bios with no options and I can't used speedfna because it doesn't work. Can I chagbe it's faN
Edit: I already cleaned out the fans and even added artic silver 5. It's loud where people can hear it accross the classroom.
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T500 with Windows 7 Enterprise (n). Even though my laptop is docked (or plugged in), there is a battery meter to the left of the system tray. I'd like to turn that off if possible. Has anyone else been able to do that?
I recently installed the latest drivers and my screen backlight turned off. The problem is that my Fn-F7 key combination doesn't work, so I can't turn it back on.
I can see my screen at night if I hold a source of light next to the screen. So I can still do some trivial things with my laptop.
Is there a way to turn the backlight on without using Fn-F7 key combination, either via the command line, or some other way?
In simple terms, if battery time is approximately known, how can one estimate how long a laptop can "hold on" in sleep mode, before battery goes dead ?
Apart from literally taking a watch and measuring it ?
I'm on my third power adapter for my HP Pavilion dv4-1435dx in less than one year. I'm not abusing them. I used Mac laptops for 10 years (before needing to switch to a PC) without a problem.
I tried a Targus universal power adapter, but it wouldn't charge my PC, it worked fine on another laptop http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.aspx?sku=APA6911US
Any suggestion for a more durable and reliable power adapter?
What's the difference between the terms 'netbook', 'notebook', and 'laptop'? I've always just called portable computers "laptops", but apparently there is a technical difference between the three.
I work in the countryside gathering requirements, so my laptop often gets a lot of dust, and I cannot dedicate too much time for cleaning it, nor opening it.
I'd like to hear what solutions do you use for cleaning it, specially the screen and keyboard. I prefer home-made solution before special products, that I cannot buy at work.
Thanks in advance.

Since I seldom use the built-in cd-rom, but usually carelessly press open door button which is on the side of laptop. Is there any way to power off cd-rom so the button won't work. Better not to open the back lid and unplug power cable.
I have always been a Windows user.
I have a laptop that originally had Windows XP on it and it is currently unused.
I want to install a different OS on it.
What OS can I try, and from where do I get one?
I'm looking into a new laptop. It needs to be capabable of running chunky Sql queries on chunky sql server databases ( 2GB).
This isn't my usual bag so any advice would be welcome.
I'd like to use the native 1920x1200 laptop monitor that comes with the Alienware m17x along with 2 additional external monitors, one through the displayport and another through the hdmi port. Is there any way to do this? And if so how?
I've tried to update the nvidia drivers, I've installed ultramon, etc., but I can't seem to make it happen. I've seen posts that suggest it's possible, but I can't seem to figure out how.
This is Team 4786 Nicolet Fear FIRST FRC robotics, our problem is we cant get our D-Link (DAP-1522) to connect to our Toshiba (TECRA R950) laptop wireless. It has connected before in the past and we don't know why it is not working anymore. The D-links still function correctly and we think our problem lies within the Toshiba.
EDIT:The Toshiba connects to the school Wifi, and other things (small FRC drive station) connect to the D-link, but they won't connect to each other.
I have got an old laptop (HP Pavilion DV2000, 5.5 years old) and I just bought a new battery for it (10,8V 5200mAh 6 Cells) probably not an original one.
When I charged it full the first time, it reached a capacity (as see through the Ubuntu 12.04 Power Statistics tool) of 80%. After 3 full cycles, it's at 79.5%.
Do you think it is normal, or the battery may be damaged (and I can complain with the vendor)?
Planning to buy a laptop(reasonable budget).
I want to know the basic requirement to run VS2010 and SQL Server 2008 smoothly with Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Dreamweaver CS4 in Windows 7 Home.
Can Pentium Processor do the job?
If not please Suggest me.
Thank you.
Not sure how to explain this exactly... if you need me to clarify, please add a comment and I'll address it.
I'm looking for a USB hard drive that conforms to a laptop. Perhaps something that can be plugged in and carried around, tossed into a backpack without fear of ruining the connector or accidentally coming unplugged.
Has anyone seen a hard drive like this?
Can a Gateway Solo5300 laptop be upgraded enough to run Windows XP? It has an Intel Mobile Pentium III processor with 64MB DRAM (PC100) upgradeable to 512MB and a 10GB hard drive.
Gateway Laptop running Windows XP Home Edition. Windows won't load. Message "entering setup" appears and doesn't go any further. I have attempted using f2 to enter setup and f10 - no difference. Is this viral, or possibly hardware related?
My Compaq CQ50-215CA laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate RC 32-bit recently told me to replace my battery for fear of sudden shutdowns. Is there any good diagnostics software that anyone has used to test for battery condition and max. life? Also what are good practices for keeping maximal battery life?
Thanks.
