• changing desktop background picture from stretch on Windows 7

  I have a brand new Windows 7 laptop, I've changed the desktop background picture using the "personalization" item of the desktop right click menu. Below the list that of images to choose there's a drop down with options "stretch", "fit", "tile", etc. When I change that from stretch to anything else nothing happens, and when I return to that dialog the drop down is still on "stretch". Anyone knows what's going on? Thanks. EDIT: apparently this is a know problem with HP/Compaq laptops.

• Backup folder on sometimes attached external usb harddrive

  My girlfriend no longer has space her laptops drive to store her photos. The drive she has now is 750GB, so to go to a bigger drive would be expensive, as there isn't many 1.5tb 2.5 inch 9.5mm hdd on the market (as of now, there is only one). Because of that, I am thinking of moving her pictures to a cheap external usb hdd. As of now, I'm automatically backing up her important folders (My Documents, Pictures, etc.) using Windows 7 default backup software to a network drive. My problem is that I don't know of a good solution to automatically backup a folder residing on an usb disk. The usb disk won't be attached to the computer all the time, so I can't just treat it as a normal backup folder. Sometimes the backup would run and the folder would not be there! Anyone knows any software or methodology to backup folders on external usb hard drives that are not always present? Thanks

• Toshiba Satellite A305-S6861 Display Problems

  Well this is the first Laptop I have ever worked on with a dedicated video card. So, there is no video going to the laptops monitor or to an external. Ripped it apart found the gpu and now am stuck. I cant decide if its the gpu that has gone out or the motherboard. Any one have any suggestions? If it were a desktop I would throw in one of my spare video cards. Mainly I don't want to order the video card and eat the $50 if its the motherboard.

I need connection scheme like this: laptop1 [wlan0] >>>>>>>> laptop2 [wlan0] (in ad-hoc mode, as ap, etc) >>>>> laptop2 [wlan1] >>>> internet. laptop1 [wlan0] connecting to laptop2 [wlan0]. laptop2 connecting to internet through wlan1. Is it possible?   I busted my keyboard on my laptop, and now my computer rarely starts since it doesnt ignore this problem when booting. So what i want to do, is to disable my keyboard from the boot menu. But I cant access the boot menu since my keyboard doesnt work. I have an addtional keybaord via USB but that one doesnt work before windows is booted. So in short, what I want is to access my laptops boot menu now when im on windows via cmd, but im not sure how to do it.

• Unable to read USB External HD after aborted back up

  I have two PC laptops. On one of the two PC's (Win 7) I Aborted a back up and ejected the drive. Now that same pc wants to format the drive. I plugged the drive into the other pc (Win XP) and that one reads the drive and all data stored. Why does one want to format the drive and the other does not? .... My apologies for not being clearer with my original question and thanks for the responses, so; The drive is not a flash stick, its an external WD Hard drive plugged in via the USB. The two tips provided did not resolve the issue. Strangely, the pc with win XP can read the drive but the pc that the HD was plugged into when the backup was aborted still wants to format the drive. • Multi-machine backup solutions

  I have a growing number of PCs and laptops in my home that need a backup solution. My question is 2 fold: Most commercial backup vendors appear to license by the machine, are there any products that give a license that can be used on all your machines, without a per machine cost? An alternative is to have a centrally controlled back up strategy controlled from a single PC with an attached hard drive that can back up other machines on the network. What backup software is suitable for this approach? Will this software be windows/Linux interoperable? I've searched for duplicate questions but don't see anything that addresses the multi machine/cost issue. OSs in network will be Windows (XP, Vista, 7) and Linux variants. Not pattern to when machines will be switched on.

• Is it possible to change User's Home Directorys permission in OSX?

  Most of your staff uses OSX as main operation system. The problem is that recently we were attacked with some odd malware: users are getting zip-file via mail, and when they open this zip file, they execute a binary keylogger malware, that is inside this zipped file. (One click is enough). We have some non-technical limitations and due this limitation we can't configure user's mail servers. But actually we have physical access to their laptops. As far as I know, there is possible to mount user's home directory without "x" (execution) permission in Linux and *BSD. So users can't run some binary file inside home directory. Is it possible to configure OS X so that user can't execute files inside /Users/?

• How to "get" a reliable parallel port on a laptop without a PCMCIA slot?

  Usb-Parallel port (for an old, but reliable matrix printer that has its special use) connections (cables) are unreliable. They sometimes work, sometimes don't - and since I installed Windows 7 I can't get neither of my old ones to work properly. PCMCIA is usually considered (and it is) a much more reliable solution, but unfortunatelly, none of my new laptops has a PCMCIA slot. So, all ideas are welcomed. What should I do? I'm open to all suggestions as long as you have some experience that they work more reliably than USB-Parallel cables and their wicked drivers.

• Cannot Ping PS3 Using a Wired Connection

  PS3 is using the inbuilt wireless network adapter (I cannot change this) When I try to ping the PS3 from ANY computer which is on a wired ethernet connection, I get Request Timed Out errors. Whenever I ping from a computer with a wireless connection, it works just fine. To be clear: Pinging from Wireless PC to Wireless PS3 works Pinging from Wired PC to Wireless PS3 fails I have tried this on several PC's and Laptops all with the same results. As an attempted solution I have set up static IP's on all related devices. More information: Default Gateway = 192.168.2.1 PS3(wireless) = 192.168.2.100 PC(wired) = 192.168.2.99 Subnet Mask(for both devices, I have made sure) = 255.255.255.0 Thanks

• Internet Connectivity... Help please!

  Hi. My Laptop is having trouble connecting to my wireless router. Other laptops are using the wireless, but it's not reached capacity. The laptop recognises (with a strong signal) that there is wireless internet, and I can connect via the router with a cable because this happens automatically. My problem is this... When I click "connect" (for example in the network and sharing centre), the dialogue box closes and nothing else happens - as though "connect" is being read as "exit". I am running Vista on a Toshiba Satellite Pro P300. Any help would be very much appreciated, Thanks

  I have a desktop background image (a picture) in a half-dozen different resolutions, that I'd like to deploy to a disparate collection of computers with different monitors and video cards and whatnot. Laptops, netbooks, desktops, widescreen, and even a couple of "tall" screens. I have images to cover most of the cases. I would like Windows 7 to correctly pick the correct desktop background image via group policy. Now, the logon screen is already done. The OEMBackground method is rather clever, and lets you copy files of different resolutions to the machine, and the logon app will calculate the aspect ratio of the monitor and match it to a file as closely as possible. Is there any way to have that functionality on the desktop background as well?

• Best cloud based IT Systems management services out there?

  Our startup organisation is growing fast in 2 different office locations. That brings new challenges and headaches. Our entire company is cloud based, and I am looking for a good product to manage our remote systems. Currently we do not have on-site AD servers, we are using the Windows Azure AD services, so cannot rely on group policies at this stage. I would like to be able to achieve the following: (they are all laptops) Remote Desktop Support Patch management Lock down software on machines (restrict them) Monitor and manage systems Other benefits would be good, but if I can achieve the ones listed above, it will go a long way. We have a combination of Windows 7 pro & Windows 8 & 8.1 machines. I am currently using Windows Intune, but it is really limited. Really just a glorified patch enforcer.   I have two virtualization software on one of my laptops which is dedicated to Windows 8 development. A VMWare for generic virtualization and the Windows 8 like Hyper-V for the WP8 SDK. Unfortunately these softwares don't like each other. Is there a way to get them play along? The exact problem is that if I install the SDK, VMWare won't even update or run. There is only one way to make them work. Switch Hyper-V on and off. Which is one restart all the time.

• Is it normal for the laptop charger to spark when plugging in?

  All the laptop chargers I had until now sparked whever I plugged them in. This is true for my old charger (the bulkier / rounder Dell model) and the new charger (the flat Dell model) with two different Dell laptops, however until recently I didn't give it much thought. Then, in the last couple of months: I shorted out a conference room and melted the floor a little (the wire caught fire) The second charger (also a Dell original) died, taking the power strip with it I'm wondering: Is it normal for laptop chargers to spark when plugged in? Specifically new, original Dell chargers Is there a "correct" way to plug / unplug chargers? Do I need to first unplug it from the wall and then from the laptop / do I need to first plug it into the wall and then into the laptop? May the problem be caused by the fact that I leave sometimes the charger plugged into the wall without connecting the laptop for longer periods of time (up to a day)? PS. I'm talking about Europe, so 220V and this happens in many places (at home, at my parents, at work, in hotels I trave to, etc)

• Undetected Virus? I study at College, and Now all of the school computers have paint.exe -autocheck

  "C:\WINDOWS\system32\Paint.exe" -autocheck is added to the registry every time its removed. This is like global. All the lab PCs(more than a hundred), personal laptops have this file. I really have no expert help to turn to.. as jotti says this file is clean. Here's the dropped file [removed] It seems that we all had this game cheating tool on our PCs called "Garena Maphack". Everytime it was run it would drop paint.exe into the system dir. Paint.exe is diguised as the real paint.exe from windows. Having the same icon and such. • Windows Server 2003 R2 SIS Groveler start error

  Hi I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 running and I need to have a WDS with mixed mode so I can deploy Windows 7 & Windows XP images. I went to setup the first image and after the wizard was done copying the correct files I got: Single Instance Storage Groveler: Service did not start (or something like that). I checked event viewer and got this: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7023 Date: 3/26/2012 Time: 7:03:21 PM User: N/A Computer: SERVER2 Description: The Single Instance Storage Groveler service terminated with the following error: The service has not been started. This server is needed very soon because we just got a shipment of several Windows XP capable laptops and need to deploy Windows XP over PXE and this is keeping us from proceeding. • WD 1TB Passport Essential not working on some USB ports

  I have a strange situation here. I got a new Toshiba P850/04P laptop, there are 4 USB 3.0 ports, 2 on the right and 2 on the left. When I plug my WD 1TB Passport Essential into the 2 ports on the left, the drive keeps disconnecting and then connecting again, on and off. Sometimes it works well for 1 hour and then disconnects and even shows the "please format your drive" message. What is odd is: this WD 1TB Passport Essential works perfectly on those 2 ports on the right side. It has been working fine on all other PCs and laptops. Another 500 GB WD passport can work with the USB ports on the left (the ones 1TB can not), also all other devices can work with all 4 ports. I am really confused! Does anyone know what the problem could be?

• Trying to build a history of popular laptop models

  A requirement on a software project is it should run on typical business laptops up to X years old. However while given a specific model number I can normally find out when it was sold, I can't find data to do the reverse... for a given year I want to see what model numbers were released/discontinued. We're talking big-name, popular models like Dell Latitude/Precision/Vostro, Thinkpads, HP, etc. The data for any model is out there but getting a timeline is proving hard. Sites like Dell are (unsurprisingly) geared around current products, and even Wikipedia isn't proving very reliable. You'd think this data must have been collated by manufacturers or enthusiasts, surely?

• Whats wrong with my keyboard?

  I have a new kind of weird problem with my laptops keyboard. To be precise with the shift key. Lately the both Shift-Keys doesn't just make the letters big, they also took role of the 2 and the 7 on the numpad. So when i push the left shift key (with num lock) it also writes a 7. When I use the left shift key (without num lock), the cursor goes to the begin of the line. When i push the right shift key (with num lock) it writes a 2. When I use the right shift key (without num lock), the cursor goes to the end of the line. I really don't know what I changed on the computer... it's really weird and really annoying

• 1 Computer Pulls Wrong DNS Every Morning

  One of my users takes his laptop home, connects to his internal network fine. He brings it in every morning and since Monday - every morning it pulls the wrong DNS every time. It pulls 1 DNS: 192.168.1.1 which is the router. The DNS are external IPs. I have several users that take their laptops home and connect to other networks - what could cause this anomaly? He's booting up when he comes in the office and a simple ipconfig /release /renew fixes the issue.

• TrueCrypt Corrupted Files

  Several months ago, I needed to reorganize my data across multiple external hard drives with my laptops primary hard drive as the go-between. My external hard drives are all encrypted with TrueCrypt. It appears to me that somehow during the transfer of my files between the encrypted external drive an the unencrypted internal drive, the files were transferred "as-is" (in their encrypted state). The files range from very small to very large. It appears that this may have happened during one consecutive transfer session. Has anyone ever experienced this problem, and if so were you able to fix it? Is there a way to recreate the encrypted partition, transfer the files, and then decrypt them to their usable state? • What do desktop users use SSD for? [closed]

  I keep hearing people say how much faster their desktops/laptops are after switching to SSD. But then when I ask them what do they use SSD for, the answers are always "booting". Not trying to start a flame war here. I use SSD for my database server and it makes a huge difference. A single SSD can replace a 10 drives RAID 10 and is actually both much faster and MUCH CHEAPER. But I just can't think of a usecase for desktops where SSD could make a similar impact. Sure it's kinda nice to cut boot time down from 40 seconds to 10 seconds. But is it that big a deal? Would love to hear how SSD improves your desktop performance.

  In Windows 7, I really liked an opportunity to change the position of the windows by pressing hotkeys Win + (Left | Right | Up | Bottom): Win + Left - window attached to the left side Win + Right - window attached to the right side Win + Up - window is maximized Win + Bottom - window in the normal state I’m talking about this: This is really useful hotkeys and really comfortable work with windows. But not all can use Windows 7 right now. When Windows7 was in beta and RC states I really wanted to use this features right now in current Windows version (I had Vista). So I spent my time and wrote this tool. In addition, the tool has functional which can change position of windows (It is useful for laptops, you can move windows with hotkeys). And of course this tool can move windows between monitors. Hot keys can be customized. Interface in English. Now I don’t want to add new functionality, because now I’m using Windows 7 with all functions that this tool have. I wrote this tool on C# with .NET 3.5. You can use this source code for knowing how to work with hotkeys with C#. At first I placed source code on Google Code and then placed it on CodePlex too. So you can download it from one of them. I would be glad if someone will use it. :)
