  • Zero downtime deployment (Tomcat), Nginx or HAProxy, behind hardware LB - how to "starve" old server?

    - by alexeypro
Currently we have the following setup. Hardware Load Balancer (LB) Box A running Tomcat on 8080 (TA) Box B running Tomcat on 8080 (TB) TA and TB are running behind LB. For now it's pretty complicated and manual job to take Box A or Box B out of LB to do the zero downtime deployment. I am thinking to do something like this: Hardware Load Balancer (LB) Box A running Nginx on 8080 (NA) Box A running Tomcat on 8081 (TA1) Box A running Tomcat on 8082 (TA2) Box B running Nginx on 8080 (NB) Box B running Tomcat on 8081 (TB1) Box B running Tomcat on 8082 (TB2) Basically LB will be directing traffic between NA and NB now. On each of Nginx's we'll have TA1, TA2 and TB1, TB2 configured as upstream servers. Once one of the upstreams's healthcheck page is unresponsive (shutdown) the traffic goes to another one (HttpHealthcheckModule module on Nginx). So the deploy process is simple. Say, TA1 is active with version 0.1 of the app. Healthcheck on TA1 is OK. We start TA2 with Healthcheck on it as ERROR. So Nginx is not talking to it. We deploy app version 0.2 to TA2. Make sure it works. Now, we switch the Healthcheck on TA2 to OK, switch Healthcheck to TA1 to ERROR. Nginx will start serving TA2, and will remove TA1 out of rotation. Done! And now same with the other box. While it sounds all cool and nice, how do we "starve" the Nginx? Say we have pending connections, some users on TA1. If we just turn it off, sessions will break (we have cookie-based sessions). Not good. Any way to starve traffic to one of the upstream servers with Nginx? Thanks!

  • Tomcat threads vs Java threads

    - by black666
When using java threads, one has to take care of the basic problems that come with concurrency through synchronization etc. AFAIK Tomcat also works with threads to handle its workload. Why is it, that I don't have to think about making my code threadsafe when it is running in Tomcat?

  • Unable to use JConsole with Tomcat running as windows service

    - by Kees de Kooter
I am running tomcat 6.0.18 as a windows service. In the service applet the jvm is configured default, i.e. it is using jvm.dll of the JRE. I am trying to monitor this application with JConsole but cannot connect to it locally. I added the parameter -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote (which works when starting tomcat with the start.bat script). But the jvm does not seem to pick up the parameter.

  • IntelliJ IDEA "Tomcat manager" application

    - by Jon
Hello, I'm using IntelliJ IDEA 9.0.2 but I assume this question applies to previous versions as well. In the Run/Debug Configurations dialog there is an option called "Deploy 'Tomcat Manager' application", but I haven't been able to find any documentation for how to use it in the IntelliJ help or online. Has anyone had experience using this, and know what URL I could use to access it once Tomcat is running? Thanks!

  • Java / Tomcat memory leak in RedHat Linux?

    - by black-rocky
Hi, I've got a Red Hat box with 6G memory running Tomcat and I'm trying to figure out how much memory I have left on the box. Problem is, top & jconsole is showing one figure (around 200M), and system monitor is showing a different figure (around 2G). Does anybody know what the difference is? I'm not sure if there is a memory leak happenning here, but the highest memory consumer is a tomcat process that's taking 2.2G of memory. Screenshots below:

  • Tomcat 403 error after LDAP authentication.

    - by user352636
I'm currently trying to use an LDAP server to authenticate users who are trying to access our Tomcat setup. I believe I have managed to get the LDAP authentication working in the form of a JNDI realm call from Tomcat, but immediately after the user enters their password Tomcat starts throwing 403 (permission denied) errors for everything except from the root page (ttp://localhost:1337/). I have no idea why this is happening. I am following the example at http://blog.mc-thias.org/?title=tomcat_ldap_authentication&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 . server.xml (the interesting/changed bits) <Realm className="org.apache.catalina.realm.JNDIRealm" debug="99" connectionURL="ldap://localhost:389" userPattern="uid={0},ou=People,o=test,dc=company,dc=uk" userSubTree="true" roleBase="ou=Roles,o=test,dc=company,dc=uk" roleName="cn" roleSearch="memberUid={1}" /> <Valve className="org.apache.catalina.authenticator.SingleSignOn" /> web.xml (the interesting/changed bits) <security-constraint> <display-name>Security Constraint</display-name> <web-resource-collection> <web-resource-name>Protected Area</web-resource-name> <!-- Define the context-relative URL(s) to be protected --> <url-pattern>/*</url-pattern> <!-- If you list http methods, only those methods are protected --> </web-resource-collection> <auth-constraint> <!-- Anyone with one of the listed roles may access this area --> <role-name>admin</role-name> <role-name>regular</role-name> </auth-constraint> </security-constraint> <!-- Default login configuration uses form-based authentication --> <login-config> <auth-method>BASIC</auth-method> </login-config> <!-- Security roles referenced by this web application --> <security-role> <role-name>admin</role-name> <role-name>regular</role-name> </security-role> I cannot access my LDAP setup at the moment, but I believe it is alright as the login is accepted by the BASIC auth method, it's just tomcat that is rejecting it. The roles should be as defined in web.xml - admin and regular. If there is any other information you require me to provide, please just ask! My thanks in advance to anyone who can help, and my apologies for any major mistakes I have made - yesterday was pretty much the first time I'd ever heard of LDAP =D. EDIT: Fixed the second xml segment. Apologies for the formating-fail.

  • Getting Tomcat user in Java

    - by wolfi
Hey everybody, is there a way to get the logged in user name (and group) from a Tomcat system. I read something about configuring Tomcat, so it is getting the user information out of a database. But I found now information about getting the name of the user (in my GWT Project), which is logged in. I'm trying to write a little GWT project and would like to publish the user name to the front page. Thx for your help.

  • Configuring a Context specific Tomcat Security Realm

    - by Andy Mc
I am trying to get a context specific security Realm in Tomcat 6.0, but when I start Tomcat I get the following error: 09-Dec-2010 16:12:40 org.apache.catalina.startup.ContextConfig validateSecurityRoles INFO: WARNING: Security role name myrole used in an <auth-constraint> without being defined in a <security-role> I have created the following context.xml file: <Context debug="0" reloadable="true"> <Resource name="MyUserDatabase" type="org.apache.catalina.UserDatabase" description="User database that can be updated and saved" factory="org.apache.catalina.users.MemoryUserDatabaseFactory" pathname="conf/my-users.xml" /> <Realm className="org.apache.catalina.realm.UserDatabaseRealm" resourceName="MyUserDatabase"/> </Context> Created a file: my-users.xml which I have placed under WEB-INF/conf which contains the following: <tomcat-users> <role rolename="myrole"/> <user username="test" password="changeit" roles="myrole" /> </tomcat-users> Added the following lines to my web.xml file: <web-app ...> ... <security-constraint> <web-resource-collection> <web-resource-name>Entire Application</web-resource-name> <url-pattern>/*</url-pattern> </web-resource-collection> <auth-constraint> <role-name>myrole</role-name> </auth-constraint> </security-constraint> <login-config> <auth-method>BASIC</auth-method> </login-config> ... </web-app> But seem to get the error wherever I put conf/my-users.xml. Do I have to specify an explicit PATH in the pathname or is it relative to somewhere? Ideally I would like to have it packaged up as part of my WAR file. Any ideas?

  • Tomcat: Cache-Control

    - by Itay
Jetty has a CacheControl parameter (can be specified webdefault.xml) that determines the caching behavior of clients (by affecting headers sent to clients). Does Tomcat has a similar option? In short, I want to turn off caching of all pages delivered by a tomcat server and/or by a specific webapp?

  • Grails exploded under tomcat

    - by xain
Hi, is there a way to use Grails in "exploded" mode on tomcat in order to make individual changes in a running application (like a gif) without having to regenerate the entire war and upload it ? Something like adding an xml file in tomcat's conf/Catalina/localhost that points to an exploded grails application ? Thanks in advance.

  • Changing new Tomcat settings from the defaults in STS Eclipse

    - by Ribeye
I find myself continually having to delete my Tomcat 7 server in STS Eclipse and re-installing. Each time I have to then: a) increase start up time from 45 sec and b) increase Tomcat memory by adding something like this on the "VM Arguments" under the "Arguments" tab: "-XX:MaxPermSize=512m -XX:PermSize=512m -Xms256m -Xmx1024m -XX:-UseGCOverheadLimit" How do you change defaults for a) and b)? Google has plenty of info on changing these one time, but I want to change the defaults for a "new", and on this the search is coming up a blank. Thanks

  • load balancing in Tomcat

    - by Alvin
Hi All, I want to implement the load balancing in tomcat 6.0 so that we can create more than one instance of a tomcat and when any of the instance is down then other instance will run our application. so that our application will never be down even when the large number of concurrent request comes. But i have no idea to implement it. Please give your precious suggestions.

  • Tomcat memory issue

    - by user305210
Hello, I have noticed that my application that is running on Tomcat 5 starts with 1gig of memory and as soon as it starts receiving requests from client, the memory starts dropping until it is down to 100MBs and troubles start from there. I am looking at /manager/status page of tomcat under JVM section where "Free Memory", "Total Memory", "Max Memory" is listed. Is this an indicator of memory leak? Memory does not seem to be freed-up automatically even if there are no requests coming from client machines.
