• WSUS report hide not approved updates

  I have a WSUS server which is configured as a replica of the upstream server. My parent organization requires that it is a replica. However, they are not always the fastest at approving updates. I would like to know if there is a way to exclude Unapproved updates from the "Updates Needed" tally. I consistently have 2-3 updates missing from all of my computers, and when I check on them, they are all listed as Unapproved. Any way to do this? Thanks!

  Appreciate all advice 0n the following questions Which database systems (Ms SQL 2008, MS SQL Compact, or others) comes installed with VS2010 Express edition. SQL Server 2008 R2 Express is free, can we install and integrate with VS2010 Express? How to uninstall those database already come installed? I have installed VS2010 express on Windows 7; just VS2010 components (VB, C#, C++ and Web Developer) and without installing any other things like SQL Express. These are actually installed by installing VS2010 Express, but I have no idea how to use them or verify their valid existence from VS2010. Also, do I have to uninstall them before I install SQL Server 2008 R2, which is the latest version I believe? And what tool is needed to manage and create data source and tables?

• Distributing Microsoft Office Template or Macro over the network

  We have around 400 users who use Word and we want to make their life easier by distributing templates and macros over the network. The easiest way to do this of course to setup a shared network folder and let them get the appropriate templates and macros. Of course, each user has to know where to copy these files to in their local PC, and we have to rely on constant email communication to let them know for newer version of the macro and templates. The next alternative is to ask them to configure Word to point to these network folder. But of course any disruption to the network means disruption to their work. We are thinking to setup a synchronization mechanism that downloads new templates to their local machine. We are also thinking to make this sync tool to prompt users that it will download new templates - you know just to give them visibility that they are receiving changes. We are wondering what is the best approach that people usually use in their workplaces ? Are there any specific tool that can make this task easier ?

  We have an isolated enviornment of a few hundred servers in which we use WSUS to push updates too. We have thousands of updates which to manage and push to devices testing along the way to ensure the update will not break anything. What are the best practices that you all follow in your enteprise networks to ensure an update does not go out to all the machines that will break something? We currently have ours broken into customized groups for each type of machine. There is one "Test Group" which has one PC of each type which we apply updates to for error checking. Is this a similar procedure others follow or is their an easier safer way to manage the thousands of WSUS updates?

• Stop windows resuming from hibernation to install automatic updates

  I always hibernate my work (Windows 7, x64) laptop when leaving for the night. Sometimes when I come in again in the morning, the laptop is powered up and there's a message telling me that new updates have been installed. (I've changed the registry so automatic updates don't force a reboot.) I'm happy to have Windows apply updates automatically, but I don't want it to resume from hibernation to do so. How can I stop this behaviour so I'm not wasting electricity?

• Remotely initiate windows updates

  I have a network with countless workstations on it and the windows updates are done through WSUS in push cycles to allow us to use a generic image and configuration and avoid network congestion. I have a number of workstations in storage that are connected once a month for a few days to recieve updates, however not all of them fall within their push cycle. I want to avoid going to each machine and clicking "check updates" as that would require me to connect a monitor, mouse and keyboard. Is there a way (preferably through powershell but im open minded) to initiate a check and install of updates on a remote system? Lets say for 1 system at a time right now, I can add a file reader and a look later. NOTE: the configuration of the WSUS server is above my pay grade, im simply being asked to ensure these machines are updated. Thanks for any help or hints

• Updates broke my themes/shell [Ubuntu 12.04 running Gnome 3 ]

  I am running gnome-session 3.4.2.1. After the latest updates (listed below) my theme regressed to what looks like tango - not sure. Am unable to change it using Gnome-tweak tool or the display settings. I am also unable to change the wallpaper. Here's what it looks like: Synaptic: Chromium and this is the wallpaper page even though I have selected the wallpaper, it actually does not change. This same problem occurred on my personal computer, and one other computer I have, all running the same software/config. The interesting thing is that while Gnome 3 and Unity are affected, Cinnamon is not. What I've done so far: purged and re-installed both gnome 3 and Unity- no change noted. So, how do I fix this?   Do you often have people ask you for advice about technology, or do you write tech-focused blog or newsletter?  Here’s how you can get information to share with your readers about Microsoft technology with Microsoft Broadcaster. Microsoft Broadcaster is a new service from Microsoft to help publishers, bloggers, developers, and other IT professionals find relevant information and resources from Microsoft.  You can use it to help discover things to write about, or simply discover new information about the technology you use.  Broadcaster will also notify you when new resources are available about the topics that interest you.  Let’s look at how you could use this to expand your blog and help your users. Getting Started Head over to the Microsoft Broadcaster site (link below), and click Join to get started. Sign in with your Windows Live ID, or create a new account if you don’t already have one. Near the bottom of the page, add information about your blog, newsletter, or group that you want to share Broadcaster information with.  Click Add when you’re done entering information.  You can enter as many sites or groups as you wish. When you’ve entered all of your information, click the Apply button at the bottom of the page.  Broadcaster will then let you know your information has been submitted, but you’ll need to wait several days to see if you are approved or not. Our application was approved about 2 days after applying, though this may vary.  When you’re approved, you’ll receive an email letting you know.  Return to the Broadcaster website (link below), but this time, click Sign in. Accept the terms of use by clicking I Accept at the bottom of the page. Confirm that your information entered previously is correct, and then click Configure my keywords at the bottom of the page. Now you can pick the topics you want to stay informed about.  Type keywords in the textbox, and it will bring up relevant topics with IntelliSense. Here we’ve added several topics to keep up with. Next select the Microsoft Products you want to keep track of.  If the product you want to keep track of is not listed, make sure to list it in the keywords section as above. Finally, select the types of content you wish to see, including articles, eBooks, webcasts, and more. Finally, when everything’s entered, click Configure My Alerts at the bottom of the page. If you choose to receive emails of new content, you’ll have to configure it with Windows Live Alerts.  Click Continue to set this up. Select if you want to receive Messenger alerts, emails, and/or text messages when new content is available.  Click Save when you’re finished. Finally, select how often you want to be notified, and then click Access Dashboard to view the content currently available. Finding Content For Your Blog, Site, or Group Now you can find content specified for your interests from the dashboard.  To access the dashboard in the future, simply go to the Broadcaster site and click Sign In. Here you can see available content, and can search for different topics or customize the topics shown. You’ll see snippets of information from various Microsoft videos, articles, whitepapers, eBooks, and more, depending on your settings.  Click the link at the top of the snippet to view the content, or right-click and copy the link to use in emails or on social networks like Twitter. If you’d like to add this snippet to your website or blog, click the Download content link at the bottom.   Now you can preview what the snippet will look like on your site, and change the width or height to fit your site.  You can view and edit the source code of the snippet from the box at the bottom, and then copy it to use on your site. Copy the code, and paste it in the HTML of a blog post, email, webpage, or anywhere else you wish to share it.  Here we’re pasting it into the HTML editor in Windows Live Writer so we can post it to a blog. After adding a title and opening paragraph, we have a nice blog post that only took a few minutes to put together but should still be useful for our readers.  You can check out the blog post we created at the link below. Readers can click on the links, which will direct them to the content on Microsoft’s websites. Conclusion If you frequently need to find educational and informative content about Microsoft products and services, Broadcaster can be a great service to keep you up to date.  The service worked quite good in our tests, and generally found relevant content to our keywords.  We had difficulty embedding links to eBooks that were listed by Broadcaster, but everything else worked for us.  Now you can always have high quality content to help your customers, coworkers, friends, and more, and you just might find something that will help you, too! • Why does Microsoft Excel change the characters that I copy into it?

  I live in Spain and I am using the English version of Microsoft Excel installed with wine on Ubuntu. The problem is that I use my laptop at work and when I copy text into excel (text that is Spanish) the characters that are Spanish (such as é,ñ, á...etc) are changed into weird characters. How can I sort this out? For example: Martínez José....appears as "Martínez José" in my spreadsheet and I really cant have it this way or my boss will kill me. :)
