  • Dead laptop screen rewired to external only right from boot-up?

    I have a Compaq CQ50-215CA laptop and after a year and 5 months, the screen is completely distorted now. I plan on removing the screen soon, but I realize that the BIOS screen, OS select and Vista boot sequence are all displayed on the laptop screen rather than the external display. Is there some way to get the laptop to display everything (From boot-up to shutdown) on an external display (VGA port)?

  • How do I know if DirectX is using hardware acceleration or software rendering?

    Is there any DirectX diagnostcs tool which will allow me to understand if Graphics acceleration from my GPU is actually working or software rendering is kicking-in instead? I ask this because If I go properties (right click on desktop) -- settings -- I get an error saying my drivers are not working for my Intel Embedded GPU (Intel Embedded Graphics Driver - IEGD) and the system is defaulting to standard VGA drivers. I am on WinXP Professional.

  • Strange monitor issue - screen goes black after a few seconds

    My LCD monitor display is going black (turning off). It's a Samsung SYncMaster 2233 widescreen. I am trying to figure out if there is anything I can do about it, or if the monitor is junk. I have tried multiple computers, all have the same issue. I have tried a different vga cable, same issue. Power and video cables are tight / double checked. When I power on the monitor, the blue light turns on at the bottom. Then a second or two later the video comes up as expected and it looks fine. However, about 2-3 seconds after that, the screen goes black. The blue light is still on and solid at the bottom (blue light normally flashes when the monitor is sleeping). If I power cycle the monitor, same thing happens. With no computer connected or when I unplug the vga cable, I see the searching for signal message "digital", then the screen goes black. However it usually shows "digital" then "analog" after that and switches between the two a few times. The buttons on the side do not do anything, although they may be, I just can not see if they are or not. I can usually get the "digital" message by pressing the buttons on the side, but then it quickly goes black again. What is really strange is sometimes I can get it to work fine. I am not sure what the difference is. Last week I connected it up and it worked fine and it stayed fine for at least a week! I did not turn it off or anything, I just let the OS put the display to sleep. Then this week one morning I started having the screen going black issue again. Seems like something is either loose inside or beginning to fail. Do you think there is any hope for it? update: pushing the input select button causes the "digital" and "analog" messages to flash on the screen, but only for a few seconds then it goes black. When it was working properly, those messages would flash back and fourth for probably 10-20 seconds then a message would show saying check input signal, but now just a black screen.

    I have installed Virtualbox in Ubuntu 12.04, and I created a virtual guest with Windows 7 64bit. Guest additions were also installed. It works fine, but I can't set the resolution to anything higher than 1600 x 1200, whereas my screen is 1920x1080. Here's my system specifications: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3632QM CPU @ 2.20GHz AMD Radeon 7650 VGA 8 Gb RAM DDR3 Moreover, if I try to enhable 3D acceleration in the settings of my guest, when I expand to full screen it aborts...   • Achieving A 1600 x 900 Resolution For (Guest OS) Ubuntu Under (Host OS) Windows 7

    I am running Ubuntu 11.10 as a guest OS using VirtualBox 4.1.16 installed on Windows 7 Ultimate. On my laptop I'd like to be able to run Ubuntu in full screen mode at 1600 x 900. I only have options within the virtual machine to select 4:3 display settings such as 1600 x 1200, 1440 x 1050 etc. I have guest additions installed. At the windows command prompt, I tried typing: VBoxManage setextradata "Virtual Ubuntu Coursera ESSAAS" "CustomVideoMode1" "1600x900x16" This didn't work, still no 1600 x 900 res available in Ubuntu. I tried this having read the following section of the VirtualBox help (this also says something about a 'video mode hint feature' not sure what this means): 9.7. Advanced display configuration 9.7.1. Custom VESA resolutions Apart from the standard VESA resolutions, the VirtualBox VESA BIOS allows you to add up to 16 custom video modes which will be reported to the guest operating system. When using Windows guests with the VirtualBox Guest Additions, a custom graphics driver will be used instead of the fallback VESA solution so this information does not apply. Additional video modes can be configured for each VM using the extra data facility. The extra data key is called CustomVideoMode with x being a number from 1 to 16. Please note that modes will be read from 1 until either the following number is not defined or 16 is reached. The following example adds a video mode that corresponds to the native display resolution of many notebook computers: VBoxManage setextradata "VM name" "CustomVideoMode1" "1400x1050x16" The VESA mode IDs for custom video modes start at 0x160. In order to use the above defined custom video mode, the following command line has be supplied to Linux: vga = 0x200 | 0x160 vga = 864 For guest operating systems with VirtualBox Guest Additions, a custom video mode can be set using the video mode hint feature. UPDATE 02.06.12 I've just tried creating a new virtual machine using the same original disk image I had been given. This had Guest Additions v 4.1.6 installed and provided me with the 1600 x 900 full screen display I want. It's after I then install Guest Additions v 4.1.16 (the version included with my VirtualBox installation) that my only choices are 4:3 displays e.g. 1600 x 1200. Seems this is the cause.

  • netbook intel GMA 3150 external monitor 1920x1080 flicker problem

    Dear all, i recently purchased a acer netbook (apsire one d260). It runs flawlessly. Yesterday I bought a samsung 23" TFT with a native resolution of 1920x1080. According to the information found in the internet and my local computer dealer, the intel chipset can handle the native resolution of the monitor. However, this is only partly the case. I use the VGA cabel to connect, the monitor instantly switches to the native resolution and now the problem: Occasionaly, especially the first 2 hours after booting up, I have a flickering all over the screen, sometimes the entire screen is shaking and spinning around like crazy. I figured out, that lowering the resolution avoids the flicker but this helps only for some time. I can rule out that it's the monitor's problem since I found no issues with another notebook. Right now, I have no problems with the netbook, for about 30 minutes I didn't experience any issues... But I don't know for how long, it occurs without warning :-) I'm worried that if I would bring the netbook back to the dealer and explain my problem, after testing it on an external screen in the local shop, everything works just fine... And I won't get helped with the problem because I can't prove it. (I'm currently in Thailand and over here, customer service is nothing like back home in Germany) What can I do? Is this a driver related issue? (I installed the latest GPU driver) Is it because of the VGA cable? (But why does it work sometimes without any problems and with no issues on the other notebook) I monitored the GPU/CPU temperature, nothing changes really over time..Can it simply be a faulty GPU and is a replacement justifiable? I'm really stressed now because for the time I'm writing, the flickering didn't occur...but for sure, soon or later it will happen again.. I Forgot to mention, the problem also happens if the netbook runs on battery, unplugged. So the only hardware that is plugged is the TFT screen. ...........and here it comes again, flickering has just begun. NEED HELP! Can that be done?

    I'm away from my home office fairly regularly but I find it difficult to really settle to productive coding without my custom 4-screen custom built PC. My laptop (a slightly ageing HP Pavilion with a 1440 x 900 display) would really benefit from a portable monitor to plug into the vga port. Is there any suitable products out there which offer an easily luggable lightweight monitor which would fit in my laptop, offer reasonable resolution and response, and significantly enhance my screen real-estate?

It needs to be PCI (not PCI-e), and would ideally itself have dual DVI outputs (although I'll settle for DVI + VGA or even just DVI at this stage...)   • Ubuntu not detecting second monitor

    I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Lenovo x61s Thinkpad. As the screen's rather small and I want to do some video editing, I thought I'd plug in a monitor and use that. The monitor is Relisys JM777 (quite old). When I plug it into my other computer, which is running Windows 7, it immediately mirrors the display; but when plugged into the Lenovo the monitor screen remains blank. The graphics card on the Lenovo is a "VGA compatible controller" according to SysInfo. Anybody got any suggestions? I'm quite new to Linux, so simple explanations would be greatly appreciated.   • Dell Dell E2009W monitor not detected

    I have an issue with my monitor. I just installed Ubuntu 11.10, but the monitor that is plugged in doesn't appear anywhere. And by doesn't appear, I mean that in the "Displays" menu, it doesn't even appear as "Unknown", I just have my screen that appears and nothing else. It is connected through VGA, and the monitor is recognized with no problem on Windows 7. It is a Dell monitor. I'm not a pro with Ubuntu, so any help to diagnose the issue would be really helpful (and help me learn how to fix this kind of monitor issue in the future) Thanks !

    My girlfriend got a new Subnotebook for Christmas (Sony Vayo VPCY21S1E), which comes with an "Intel HD graphics" vga adaptor. When I try to boot the Ubuntu installer from USB, the screen goes blank after a short while, before I even see the Ubuntu logo. However, when I select "nomodeset" in the boot options, I can boot it to the CLI login prompt. When I start X, though, that only works in VESA mode (I've read Intel eventually got rid of Usermode Mode Setting and only offers KMS now, which I've disabled to get it to boot). What can I do to enable a) higher resolution than 1024x768 in VESA b) hardware acceleration for compiz, video playback, etc?

    To connect my laptop to external monitor (for the dual monitor configuration) I have to perform 7 weird steps: Suspend OS (close notebook for that) Connect external monitor to vga output Open notebook and unsuspend OS (at this moment in laptop screen is native resolution but on external monitor resolution is lower than native (not same as at laptop)). Suspend OS (close notebook for that) Open notebook and unsuspend OS (at this moment laptop screen has resolution as a external monitor but external monitor has lower resolution that should be in native) Suspend OS (close notebook for that) Unsuspend OS (at this moment laptop and external monitor have native resolution which will should be) I just open and close hood of the laptop until external monitor and laptop screen become in native resolution. Adjusting monitors in displays not give me proper result. I have ASUS U36SD with optimus (disabled by acpicall) with 1366x768 screen and external monitor with 1280x1024 and latest ubuntu 11.10. How to perform laptop to work with external monitor without this weird actions?

  • Enabling "AllowDualLinkModes" in xorg.conf

    I'm using a GeForce GT 620 (which is dual-link compatable) and a DVI-I dual-link splitter to try to have a desktop extended onto two monitors. At the moment when I plug in the monitors, only the monitor on the female VGA marked "1" gets a signal, and the other screen gets nothing and only one screen is detected by nvidia-settings. After reading around, I have realised that my graphics card probably comes with dual-link disabled by default, and I can enable it by adding an "AllowDualLinkModes" option to my xorg.conf. This is the current state of my xorg.conf Section "Device" Identifier "Default Device" Option "NoLogo" "True" EndSection Where do I put the line about AllowDualLinkModes? Do I create a new Section?   • Can't boot into ubuntu, black screen after grub menu

    Ubuntu is not booting properly for me anymore. The grub menu comes up, and whether I choose a linux recovery mode or the normal one I get a black screen after a few seconds. There is a brief message about vga=791 being deprecated, but I am not able to read it fully because the black screen covers it up almost immediately. I have googled for hours for solutions, and most people seem able to solve similar problems by editing in grub and adding nomodeset into the line starting with linux /boot... but this solution is not working for me, I still don't get any GUI. Sometimes I am able to get the dmesg rolling past, I think it was when I removed quiet splash from that line, but still no GUI - the computer seems to be on and working because it responds to a ctrl-alt-del and reboots. I have tried with 3 different graphics cards (2 nVidia and 1 ATI) and swapping them doesn't seem to change the behaviour at all. What else can I try?

    Well, I installed MDM, and found it's buggy with my VGA hardware due to the following screen after rebooting: This screen repeats, even if I choose Yes or No As I have access to the console (by pressing ALT+F2) I tried, sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm which gave me the following screen, Even if I choose LightDM nothing happens at the next reboot. The first screen comes back! dpkg -l | grep -i mdm command results me following, ii mdm___________1.0.4-0~webupd8~precise_____Gnome Display Mnager ii mint-mdm-themes__1.0.5-0~webupd8~precise1_____Linux Mint MDM Themes (underscores are spaces) Please help... I need LightDM login screen back! Thanks!
