• Do you have to install the REST starter kit in asp.net to access APIs?

  Hi, I'm currently trying to access a REST API for the first time using visual web developer 2008 express edition. Every article I have found says you have to install the WCF REST starter kit which is a .msi file, which would suggest that I have to install it on my machine and presumably our server too. My question is this. Is there a non installable version that I can use, e.g. just by dropping DLLs into the Bin directory and then using the classes contained. Or is there more to it than that and am I just getting very confused about how it works? Jon

For the past two months, i have been researching on types of programming, i found my interest in desktop programming, and also found this subjects (discrete maths, logic, algorithms, data structures, artificial intelligence, simulation) said to be a most known (subjects). Well as a beginner, i have no understanding on what type of language or books that can cover all these subjects, or even how to write any code. For the benefit of Python beginners, can we enumerate the common mistakes that we have all committed at one time or another, in the hopes of maybe steering a newbie or two clear of them? (In homage to "The Princess Bride", I call these the Classic Blunders.) If possible, a little supporting explanation on what the problem is, and the generally accepted resolution/workaround, so that the beginning Pythoner doesn't read your answer and say "ok, that's a mistake, how do I fix it?"

• What is the typical method to separate connected letters in a word using OCR

  I am very new to OCR and almost know nothing about the algorithms used to recognize words. I am just getting familiar to that. Could anybody please advise on the typical method used to recognize and separate individual characters in connected form (I mean in a word where all letters are linked together)? Forget about handwriting, supposing the letters are connected together using a known font, what is the best method to determine each individual character in a word? When characters are written separately there is no problem, but when they are joined together, we should know where every single character starts and ends in order to go to the next step and match them individually with a letter. Is there any known algorithm for that?

• MySQL query optimization - distinct, order by and limit

  I am trying to optimize the following query: select distinct this_.id as y0_ from Rental this_ left outer join RentalRequest rentalrequ1_ on this_.id=rentalrequ1_.rental_id left outer join RentalSegment rentalsegm2_ on rentalrequ1_.id=rentalsegm2_.rentalRequest_id where this_.DTYPE='B' and this_.id<=1848978 and this_.billingStatus=1 and rentalsegm2_.endDate between 1273631699529 and 1274927699529 order by rentalsegm2_.id asc limit 0, 100; This query is done multiple time in a row for paginated processing of records (with a different limit each time). It returns the ids I need in the processing. My problem is that this query take more than 3 seconds. I have about 2 million rows in each of the three tables.   hi, I have a vec_A that stores instances of class A as: vec_A.push_back(A()); I want to remove some elements in the vector at a later stage and have two questions: a) The element is deleted as: vec_A.erase(iterator) Is there any additional code I need to add to make sure that there is no memory leak? . b) Assume that condition if(num <5) is if num is among a specific numberList.   I just did some testing for Int PK join Vs Guid PK. Tables structure and number of records looking like that: Performance of CRUD operations using EF4 are pretty similar in both cases. As we know Int PK has better performance rather than strings. So SQL server execution plan with INNER JOINS are pretty different Here is an execution plan. As i understand according with execution plan from attached image Int join has better performance because it is taking less resources for Clustered index scan and it is go in two ways, am i right? May be some one may explain this execution plan in more details?

Or, let's just say I am completely new to programming, because the previous experiences aren't worth talking about. • Beginner, learning as I go - how to get C#/SQLite db set up and ready for testing?

  I've messed with Access a little bit in the past, had one class on OO theory, and one class on console c++ apps. Now, as a hobby project, I'm undertaking to write an actual app, which will be a database app using System.Data.SQLite and C#. I have the db's table structure planned. I have System.Data.SQLite installed and connected to VS Pro. I entered my tables and columns in VS, but that's where I'm stuck. I really don't know how to finish the db set up so I can start creating queries and testing the db structure. Can someone give me guidance to online resources that will help me learn how to get the db properly set up so I can proceed with testing it? I'm hoping for online resources specific to beginners using C# and System.Data.SQLite, but I'll use the closest I can get. Thanks.

• Stopping a MATLAB GUI callback

  Dear All, I have a START and STOP button. When I hit START, i run a bunch of code in my callback. It's basically a sequential "script" that opens valves, dispenses water and then closes the valves...there is no while() loop and it doesn't repeat. I want to be able to stop this process at any time using the STOP button. Most of the related answers I've seen are in the cases where a while() loop is used. Some people have also suggested to periodically check if the STOP button was pressed (using a variable or handle variable). Since I do not have a while loop, I can't solve it that way. Also, I'd like to be able to exit immediately, without having to periodically check (because checking multiple times in my code would be ugly and confusing). Is there a way to terminate the callback which was interrupted by the STOP button? If not, is it possible to have the START button run a .m file and then have the STOP button terminate that .m file? The worst case scenario would be to check a variable periodically. And adding more conditions either in join, or where, or add more tables to join shouldn't change this. Are there cases this is not true?

• Getting back into C/C++ after several years

  While at university I started my first programming with ANSI C, before we moved onto Java later in the course. Now I would like to go back to (re)learning C and C++ again to allow me to contribute with open source projects and also to expand my CV and improve my career prospects. Currently I mostly program in VB.net (I know I know, I try to not do things the nasty way you can with this) and am slowly picking up C# as I get some time at work. I also use a bit of java for Android dev. While I realise just doing it is the best way to learn, my exercise ideas are usually either trivial or beyond my current skills. What are some good sources for this initial relearn, I intend to possibly start helping with Chromium as other people seem to think this a good place to get started in OS. Basically any help getting back into this would be appreciated.

• How can we plan projects realistically while accounting for support issues?

  We're having a problem at work: we're trying to schedule work so that we can assess time scales and get deadline dates. The problem is that it's difficult to plan for a project without knowing everything that's going to happen. For instance, right now we've planned all our projects through the start of December, however in that time we will have various in house and external meetings, teleconferences and extra work. It's all well and good to say that a project will take three weeks, but if there is a week's worth of interruption in that time then the date of completion will be pushed back a week. The problem is 3 fold: When we schedule projects the time scales are taken literally. If we estimate three weeks, the deadline is set for three week's time, the client is told, and there is no room for extension. Interim work and such means that we lose productive time working on the project. Sometimes clients don't have the time that we need to take to do the work, so they'll sometimes come to us and say they need a project done by the end of the month even when we think that the work will take two months - not to mention we already have work to be doing. We have a Gantt chart which we are trying to fill in with all the projects we have and we fill in timesheets, but they're not compared to the Gantt chart at all. This makes it difficult to say "Well, we scheduled 3 weeks for this project, but we've lost a week here so the deadline has to move back a week." It's also not professional to keep missing deadlines we've communicated to the client. How do other people deal with this type of situation? How do you manage the planning of projects? How much "extra" time do you schedule into a project to account for non-project work that occurs during a project? How do you deal with support issues and bugs and stuff? Things you can't account for during planning? UPDATE Lots of good answers thank you.
