  I have a warning triangle that my update information is outdated, the last update was 12 days ago. I use Ubuntu 11.10. Last night I went on upgrading my Xubuntu 12.10 installation to 13.04, so at tty1 I run the command sudo do-release-upgrade and everything seemed to went well except that after rebooting and when I This is to find candidates for deletion from my nearly full hard drive. It says it's uninstalled when I try to remove it from Control Panel->Programs and Features, but the list item is still there, and if I try to remove it again, it brings up the prompt to install it. • Changing the name of a binary packaged application and its evoking command

  I have taken the source code of a large project, App A, and made many modifications to it to produce my version, App B. Both App A and App B compile cleanly on Debian and Red Hat and now I would like to build binary packages for both platforms. The last modification I need to make is ensuring App B can be installed alongside App A without any interference. I should be able to evoke both application-a and application-b in the terminal and have both be listed as separate software in whatever desktop environment is present. The projects have a debian/ folder (containing rules, control, etc.) and an rpm/ folder containing a SPEC file. Currently, building and installing the .rpm and .deb packages works except that App B is recognized as App A and therefore does not meet the aforementioned requirements. ldd shows the programs have the same exact dependencies and I am not able to pursue static linking of libraries. What modifications do I need to make to my project to achieve the desired outcome? Please be specific as I do not have much experience with the packaging process.

• Why should I install Python packages into `~/.local`?

  Background I don't develop using OS X's system provided Python versions (on OS X 10.6 that's Python 2.5.4 and 2.6.1). I don't install anything in the site-packages directory for the OS provided versions of Python. (The only exception is Mercurial installed from a binary package, which installs two packages in the Python 2.6.1 site-packages directory.) I installed three versions of Python, all using the Mac OS X installer disk image: Python 2.6.6 Python 2.7 Python 3.1.2 I don't like polluting the site-packages directory for my Python installations. So I only install the following five base packages in the site-packages directory. For the actual method/commands used to install these, see SO Question 4324558. setuptools/ez_setup distribute pip virtualenv virtualenvwrapper All other packages are installed in virtualenvs. I am the only user of this MacBook. Questions Given the above background, why should I install the five base packages in ~/.local? Since I'm installing these base packages into the site-packages directories of Python distributions that I've installed, I'm isolated from the OS X's Python distributions. Using this method, should I be concerned about Glyph's comment that other things could potentially break (see his comment below)? Again, I'm only interested in where to install those five base packages. Related Questions/Info I'm asking because of Glyph's comment to my answer to SO question 4314376, which stated: NO. NEVER EVER do sudo python setup.py install whatever. Write a ~/.pydistutils.cfg that puts your pip installation into ~/.local or something. Especially files named ez_setup.py tend to suck down newer versions of things like setuptools and easy_install, which can potentially break other things on your operating system. Previously, I asked What's the proper way to install pip, virtualenv, and distribute for Python?. However, no one answered the "why" of using ~/.local.

Example: Rack Gem (http://rubygems.org/gems/rack) Version 1.1.0 has no runtime dependencies, but six development dependencies. Console output of gem2rpm --dependencies rack-1.0.1.gem is: rubygem(test-spec) = 0 rubygem(camping) = 0 rubygem(fcgi) = 0 rubygem(memcache-client) = 0 rubygem(mongrel) = 0 rubygem(ruby-openid) = 2.0.0 rubygem(thin) = 0` How can I specify to only include runtime dependencies? • How to handle packages provided Java using Eclipse P2

  I got some OSGi bundles in binary form that declare dependencies to bundles like "org.ietf.jgss" which are provided by Java itself. P2 detects these dependencies and when I try to install the product later using the P2 director application the installation fails since no bundle provides these packages. But if I use the P2 product build I get a complete installed product that I can use. My problem is that I don't want to create product files and build for each variation of the application. So tried the approach to copy all P2 repositories in order to install the product on the target system using the P2 director. So how do I handle dependencies to packages provided by Java and how to I "convince" P2 to ignore these packages if they are provided by Java itself. Thanks for helping.

• Smallest Java Runtime I can legally distribute?

  My Java SWT desktop application is distributed with it's own Java runtime and I want to make the download size as small as possible. I'd like to remove all the classes I don't use from rt.jar, but this is forbidden according to JDK runtime licence (see the README.html file in the root JDK folder). Since Java is open source, am I allowed to compile my own 'Java' runtime from source which doesn't have this distribution restriction? If so, has anyone done this already? (Or do you just ignore the JDK licence terms?)

• Shared Source CLI 4.0?

  Microsoft released the Shared Source Common Language Infrastructure (the code previously known as ROTOR) code some years ago basically as a reference implementation of the .NET runtime. While the actual .NET runtime (mscorlib, mscoree, mscorjit, etc.) aren't compiled from the code, debugging them shows that they are remarkably similar and at a minimum share much of the same memory structures. This has been an invaluable resource when debugging tricky system behavior with .NET 2.0 compiled assemblies. Now that 4.0 has been released with major changes to the runtime I'd love to find the reference source for that as well. Microsoft has changed names for the source in the past so I'm either searching for the wrong thing, or it hasn't been released. Is there reference source for a .NET 4.0 compatible runtime?

  On debian squeeze, I am trying to do the following : fetch sources package from the wheezy source repository bootstrap a squeeze chroot for several architectures build the packages for several architectures (i386, amd64 + all and any) I want both the fetching, bootstrapping and build operation to be scriptable, repeatable, and run as a normal user. For the environment setup, I want to make as little use of the root account as possible (install the necessary dependencies, and maybe some visudo stuff). If possible I would like to avoid using a VM (pbuilder with user mode linux) So far I have tried several things with pbuilder (require root), debootstrap (require root) with little success. • How to install two packages that write the same file

  Sirs, a conundrum. I have two packages that each create /usr/bin/ffprobe. One of them is ffmpeg from the Deb Multimedia repository, while the other is ffmbc 0.7-rc5 built from source. The hand-rolled one is business-critical, and we used to just install it from source wherever it was necessary. I can only assume it would clobber the ffmpeg file, and there were never any ill effects. In theory, it should be acceptable for our ffmbc package to overwrite the file from the ffmpeg package. Is there any easy way to reconcile this?

• Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime error when viewing JPEG files in Explorer

  I am getting the following error each time I view JPG files in the windows explorer in Detailed view. Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Assertion failed! Program: C:\Windows\Explorer.EXE File: multimedia\photos\metadatahandler\util.cpp Line: 4706 Expression: MinutesFraction < 1.0 For information on how your program can cause an assertion failure, see the Visual C++ documentation on asserts (Press Retry to debug the application - JIT must be enabled) These pictures were taken from a Nikon Coolpix AW110 camera. I think it is related to some EXIF data that is a date/time. I have tried reinstalling the Visual C++ 2013 and 2008 Run time library and restarting and the problem is still there.
