• Security Alert for CVE-2010-0886 and CVE-2010-0887 Released

  Hi, this is Eric Maurice again! Oracle just released a Security Alert to announce the availability of fixes for two vulnerabilities (CVE-2010-0886 and CVE-2010-0887) affecting Oracle Java SE and Oracle Java For Business. Both vulnerabilities only affect Java when running in a 32-bit web browser. These vulnerabilities are not present in Java running on servers or standalone Java desktop applications and do not impact any Oracle server based software. The first vulnerability (CVE-2010-0886) affects the Java Deployment Toolkit (version 6 update 10 through 19) on Windows only. The second vulnerability (CVE-2010-0887) affects the Java Plug-in (version 6 update 18 and 19) on Windows, Solaris and Linux. Both vulnerabilities may allow an attacker to run commands on the user's system with the privileges of the user, whose system may have become compromised by visiting a malicious web site. Oracle rated the severity of both vulnerabilities with a CVSS Base Score of 10.0 because many Windows users grant themselves administrative privileges. However, on other platforms, or for Windows users with limited privileges, the CVSS Base Score is only 7.5, because a successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities cannot result in a full compromise of the affected system. Users can quickly determine if they are running vulnerable versions of Java by pointing their browser to http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml. Java SE users can visit http://www.java.com and download the most recent release of Java SE to address these vulnerabilities. Because of the criticality of these vulnerabilities, and the publicity they received as a result of their disclosure before the availability of a fix, Oracle recommends that all customers and Java users update their Java installation to the most recent version (6 update 20).   Is there any way to kill a zombie process without reboot?Here is how it happens: I wanted to download a 12GB torrent.After adding the .torrent file, transmission turned into a zombie process.I tried ktorrent too.Same behavior.Finally I could download the file using µTorrent but after closing the program, it turns into a zombie as well. I tried using kill skill and pkill with different options and -9 signal but no success. In some answers in web I found out killing the parent can kill the zombie, but killing wine didn't help either. Is there another way?   Español: Buen día. Instalé en una notebook ubuntu 12.04 pero me da el problema que solamente me da dos resoluciones de pantallas 800x600 y 1024x768... En la primera se ve muy grotesca la pantalla y en la segunda se ve bien, pero falta un pedazo de pantalla arriba y abajo... He tratado de buscar información sobre el tema pero parece uno de esos "bugs" que no han conseguido ser erradicados... Intenté hacer el Xorg.conf y esas cosas y nomas no se puede... Recurro a su sapiencia y experiencia en este tipo de problemas... La mini es una Lanix Neuron lt, procesador intel atom n450 y la tarjeta Intel corporation N10 family integrated graphics controller.... Inglés: Good day. I installed ubuntu 12.04 on a notebook but I get the problem that only gives me two screen resolutions of 800x600 and 1024x768 ... The first screen looks very grotesque and the second looks good, but missing a piece of screen up and down ... • Project Jigsaw: On the next train

  I recently proposed to defer Project Jigsaw from Java 8 to Java 9. Feedback on the proposal was about evenly divided as to whether Java 8 should be delayed for Jigsaw, Jigsaw should be deferred to Java 9, or some other, usually less-realistic, option should be taken. The ultimate decision rested, of course, with the Java SE 8 (JSR 337) Expert Group. After due consideration, a strong majority of the EG agreed to my proposal. In light of this decision we can still make progress in Java 8 toward the convergence of the higher-end Java ME Platforms with Java SE. I previously suggested that we consider defining a small number of Profiles which would allow compact configurations of the SE Platform to be built and deployed. JEP 161 lays out a specific initial proposal for such Profiles. There is also much useful work to be done in Java 8 toward the fully-modular platform in Java 9. Alan Bateman has submitted JEP 162, which proposes some changes in Java 8 to smooth the eventual transition to modules, to provide new tools to help developers prepare for modularity, and to deprecate and then, in Java 9, actually remove certain API elements that are a significant impediment to modularization. Thanks to everyone who responded to the proposal with comments and questions. As I wrote initially, deferring Jigsaw to a Java 9 release in 2015 is by no means a pleasant decision. It does, however, still appear to be the best available option, and it is now the plan of record.

  Hey Guys Been getting this odd error. heres the deal - in the below method i have an alert view come up, take a U/N and PW, then atempt to start another method. • Focussing on Style Sheets and Cross Browser Compatibility.

  Hello everyone, Let me begin this topic by explaining my background experience with web design. I have always been more of a back end programmer, with PHP and SQL and things. However I do have a shallow background with HTML and CSS. The problem is, I don't know it all. What I do know is, when it comes to designing (not back end dirty work) I understand basic CSS properties and I also understand HTML and I can usually throw together a sloppy web page with the two and a couple bazillion DIV tags. Anyways.. The problem I always have encountered is that when I design a website in a browser such as IE7 (and then it looks perfect on IE7), and then look at it on IE8 or IE6 or Mozilla (etc.) it gets all spacey and ugly and looks totally different than the way it should look on IE7. Question one: Basically, what I am asking everyone is what route should I take to learn how to properly build the website? Build as in put it togehter with CSS standards and HTML standards that will make my site look the same on every brwoser. (Not only learning standards but where can I learn to properly write my code?) Where is a strong free resource I can use to learn how to these things? Question two: How do I properly code my website? Do I use all external style sheets to make dynamic page design simplistic or do I hard code some things into the DIV tags on each page? What is proper? Oh, and if anyone has any tutorials on how to properly design a complete layout feel free to throw it in a response somewhere. Thank you for taking the time to read my questions, and hopefully you will understand what I am trying to get out to everyone.   Hi, I am developing a rails 2.3.2 app. I need to keep session_id for an order record, retrieve it and finally delete the session_id when the order is completed. It worked when I used cookies as session store but it doesn't for active_record store. (I restarted my browser, so no cache issue.) I know rails 2.3 implements lazy session load. I read some info about it but am still confused. Can somebody clarify how I use session_id for such a case? What I am doing is... A user make an order going through several pages. There is no sign-up, neither login. So I keep session_id in the order record so that no other user can access the order. @order = Order.last :conditions = {:id = params[:id], :session_id = session[:session_id] } When the order is finished, I set nil to session_id column. How would you implement such a case in lazy session(and active_record store) environment? Thanks. Sam

  Hi, I'm a beginner C# programmer, and to improve my skills I decided to give Project Euler a try. The first problem on the site asks you to find the sum of all the multiples of 3 and 5 under 1000. Since I'm essentially doing the same thing twice, I made a method to multiply a base number incrementally, and add the sum of all the answers togethor. public static int SumOfMultiplication(int Base, int limit) { bool Escape = false; for (int mult = 1; Escape == true; mult++) { int Number = 0; int iSum = 0; Number = Base * mult; if (Number > limit) return iSum; else iSum = iSum + Number; } regardless of what I put in for both parameters, it ALWAYS returns zero. • Performance impact when using XML columns in a table with MS SQL 2008

  I am using a simple table with 6 columns, 3 of which are of XML type, not schema-constrained. When the table reaches a size around 120,000 or 150,000 rows, I see a dramatic performance cost in doing any query in the table. For comparison, I have another table, which grows in size at about the same rate, but only contain scalar types (int, datetime, a few float columns). That table performs perfectly fine even after 200,000 rows. And by the way, I am not using XQuery on the xml columns, i am only using regular SQL query statements. Some specifics: both tables contain a DateTime field called SampleTime. a statement like (it's in a stored procedure but I show you the actual statement) SELECT MAX(sampleTime) SampleTime FROM dbo.MyRecords WHERE PlacementID=@somenumber takes 0 seconds on the table without xml columns, and anything from 13 to 20 seconds on the table with XML columns. That depends on which drive I set my database on. At the moment it sits on a different spindle (not C:) and it takes 13 seconds. Has anyone seen this behavior before, or have any hint at what I am doing wrong? I tried this with SQL 2008 EXPRESS and the full-blown SQL Server 2008, that made no difference. Oh, one last detail: I am doing this from a C# application, .NET 3.5, using SqlConnection, SqlReader, etc.. I'd appreciate some insight into that, thanks! Sam

  La XXI edición del Congreso de CUORE (Comunidad de Usuarios de Oracle) se clausuró el miércoles pasado tras dos intensos días de conferencias, talleres, reuniones y mesas redondas. Los más de 600 asistentes son una buena muestra del gran interés que despiertan las propuestas tecnológicas de Oracle entre nuestros clientes. Big Data y el sector utilities fueron dos de los grandes protagonistas del Congreso. El evento fue inaugurado por Félix del Barrio (en la segunda foto por la izquierda), director general de Oracle en España. Una buena parte del evento, la mañana del martes, estuvo dedicada a Big Data. Con Andrew Sutherland, Vicepresidente Senior de Tecnología de Oracle en EMEA, haciendo la presentación principal, para dar paso después a sesiones específicas sobre las tecnologías necesarias en las diferentes fases de los proyectos Big Data (obtener los datos, organizarlos, analizarlos y, finalmente, tomar las decisiones de negocio correspondientes). No nos vamos a entretener explicando qué es Big Data, un tema que ya hemos tratado previamente en este blog (aquí y aquí), pero sí hay que llamar la atención sobre un tema que Andrew Sutherland puso sobre la mesa en una reunión con periodistas: los proyectos relacionados con los Big Data tienen sentido pleno si nos sirven para modificar procesos y modelos de negocio, de forma que incrementemos la eficacia de la organización.   Esta formação aborda as principais dificuldades com que os Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) se confrontam quando têm de escolher as plataformas sobre as quais irão certificar, instalar e suportar as suas aplicações, e como o Oracle VM (e o Oracle Enterprise Linux) os podem ajudar a ultrapassar essas dificuldades.
