• (Mac Terminal) Looking for a recommendation for a BASH manual

  Hi, I've just begun to use the Terminal in Mac OS X and I've found the 'man' command very useful, although very often the explanations are too compact or complicated for me. I am looking for a very basic reference guide – like O'Reilly makes, for example. But in there I didn't find an entry for basic commands like ls or ln and a layman's explanation of all the flags and options. Could anybody recommend me something? Thansk a bunch in advance

• Complex includes/excludes with rsync

  I'm trying to work out the rsync filter syntax to perform complex include/excludes, and trying to achieve the following: Include / Exclude /home Include /home/user1/* I've tried many variations on the filter syntax, and despite reading the man page many time, I cannot get this sort of effect. Rsync filters seem to be very powerful, and I find it hard to believe they couldn't handle a common scenario such as this.

• Using cd to go up multiple directory levels

  I'm dealing with java projects which often result in deeply nested folders (/path/to/project/com/java/lang/whatever, etc) and sometimes want to be able to jump, say, 4 directory levels upwards. Typing cd ../../../.. is a pain, and I don't want to symlink. Is there some flag to cd that lets you go up multiple directory levels (in my head, it would be something like cd -u 4)? Unfortunately I can't find any man page for cd specifically, instead just getting the useless "builtins" page.

• Google Chrome proxy settings?

  When I try to set Google Chrome's proxy settings (on chrome://linux-proxy-config/), I get the following message: When running Google Chrome under a supported desktop environment, the system proxy settings will be used. However, either your system is not supported or there was a problem launching your system configuration. But you can still configure via the command line. Please see man google-chrome-stable for more information on flags and environment variables. I need to set proxy settings to use Chrome, but I don't want to be setting them in the command line every time I use Chrome. Is there a way to set these settings permanently? Also, is there an option in Chrome so that it doesn't use proxy for specific domains (analogous to the No proxy for setting in Firefox)?

  Okay, I decided to migrate from MySQL Server 5.5.37 to Percona Server 5.6. I ended up removing MySQL Server by the following: sudo apt-get --purge remove mysql-server mysql-server-5.5 mysql-server-core-5.5 mysql-client mysql-client-core-5.5 mysql-common sudo apt-get autoremove sudo apt-get autoclean rm -rf /var/lib/mysql rm -rf /etc/mysql Now here is my problem, when I try to install MySQL Server 5.6 it goes through its process and when it asks me for a password, it comes up with Cannot set MySQL "root" password. • How do you successfully hire out a few programmers to make it cost effective?

  Many of us know this situation well: we're a one-man (woman) development team, we need some extra help to keep up with all the tasks, the budget is small and we decide to get some help. But hiring someone is difficult. Either the person is inexperienced and I end up becoming their full-time teacher in the hopes they will produce work they way I want, or the person is skilled but for whatever reason doesn't hand over code within budget that I can just plug in and use without reworking it myself.   I have about 20 years of experience with programming, most of that on the job, and right now, I define myself as a Web Developer, because I think about half my expertise lies in the all too extended "web" field, both server side and client side, and because in the last years I'm mostly doing web development. I know my javascript, jQuery, jQueryUI, HTML4-5, css2-3 and some frameworks like backbone.js and angularJS Since university I've always been interested in Man-Machine Interaction, UI and UX. Recently, I saw the label "Web UI Developer" tossed around, and I thought that would be something I would like to qualify for. And I'd really like to qualify with confidence. I didn't find any certificate or similar, and I don't think there are any. Is the only way to qualify as a Web UI Developer having a job as one? What are the skills I need to have, and the resources I can use to acquire them?

  Zur Abwechslung gibt es heute mal einen kürzeren Artikel, und zwar zum Thema "Oracle Linux". Der eine oder andere mag sich vielleicht schon mal gefragt haben, warum man sich mit diesem "Red Hat Klon" überhaupt auseinandersetzen sollte. Gibt es neben dem "Support aus einer Hand"-Argument noch andere Gründe, warum sich Kunden dafür entscheiden, Oracle Linux einzusetzen? Diese und ähnliche Fragen hat eine kürzlich erschienene IDC-Studie beleuchtet. Sie trägt den Titel: "Oracle Linux Takes Its Place in the Operating Systems Market". Interessant ist vor allem ein konkretes Kundenbeispiel am Ende der Studie. Da es thematisch gerade passt sei zum Schluss noch ein kleiner Hinweis in eigener Sache erlaubt:Viele der in dem Paper erwähnten Aspekte und Features (wie z.B. KSplice für Reboot-freie Kernel-Updates) werden auch auf der diesjährigen DOAG-Konferenz in Nürnberg behandelt. • Why do we need fork to create new process

  In Unix whenever we want to create a new process, we fork the current process i.e. we create a new child process which is exactly the same as the parent process and then we do exec system call to replace the child process with a new process i.e. we replace all the data for the parent process eith that for the new process. Why do we create a copy of the parent process in the first place and why don't we create a new process directly? I am new to Unix please explain in lay-man terms.

Can I kindly ask to clarify from business viewpoint whether average developers publishing games and software on AppStore can cover their living expenses, even, whether they can become profitable? Is it achievable to generate revenues of 50.000 USD yearly on AppStore for a single developer? I would like to stay as realistic as possible. Despite the question might look subjective, a good business man will be able to esitmate chances for profitability and prosperity within AppStore.

  I'm a budding web developer, and I wondered if it was illegal to edit a website for a client to include a link that says 'encourage the owner of this site to pay their web developer' and follows up with a pre-made email encouraging the man to pay me. Here are the conditions: I've completed the work for the contract. I've asked to be paid, and tried to set up meetings with the owner. I've informed the owner of the site that my work will not continue unless I am paid. I should have been paid nearly a month ago (12/27) Any thoughts other than small claims? • Mounting with Nautilus works but fstab gives "Host is down" error?

  I'm connecting to my university's VPN so I can connect to the network drive. The VPN seems to be working fine and I can connect to the drive by typing the address into Nautilus and entering my login details: smb://139.___.___.140/home However, this fstab entry doesn't work: //139.___.___.140/home /media/___ cifs domain=CS,username==___,password=___,uid=sai,gid=sai 0 0 Nor does manually mounting it: sudo mount -t cifs //139.___.___.140/home /media/___ -o domain=CS,username=___,password=___,uid=sai,gid=sai,user The only error it gives is: mount error(112): Host is down Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) It's obvious the host isn't down since I can view the share from Nautilus. Why is Nautilus mounting it fine but not the normal mount command? What could cause this error?

• Canada vs Norway

  During the winter Olympics, I had a little bet with Sondre Bjells.  Sondre is the RD for Olso, Norway, a rising rock star in the .NET world and a very great guy.  The bet was that if Canada would win Gold against Norway in the man curling final, I would wear something funny and Norwegian like a Viking hat at Mix while Sondre would wear a Canadian jersey. Well, guess who won?
