• What is /opt/sun_docs used for, in Solaris 10?

  Solaris 10, SPARC. While trying clean up my "/opt" directory, I saw the "sun_docs" directory. I scanned the contents with "du -a", and also found a single, possibly related file (/var/opt/sun_docs/sundocs.html). If I understand correctly, it looks like a local set of HTML files, designed to be ready by a locally running browser? It looks like it could be shared via http, if an admin knew how to turn that on. I did google and check docs.sun.com. -ben

• Debian as USB hardware portable as possible

  I have recent hardware, 64 bit, pae and so on. But I'd like to have my Debian installation on a USB HDD. Installing Debian to USB is solved. I used the i386 architecture image. But a pae kernel has been installed. I want to be able to travel with my USB HDD and therefore I want best possible hardware compatibility. My friends and family have sometimes older hardware, but always i386, just sometimes without 64 bit or pae. Never met someone with sparc or other architectures. What should I do to get non-pae kernel and maximum hardware compatibility?

• Implementing a Linux-HA based clustering setup on Windows

  I have a (tried and tested) setup involving: 2x Load balancing nodes on a floating IP via Heartbeat, load balancing 2 tomcat servers. 2x Tomcat servers 2x Galera Cluster MySQL servers synchronously replicating (+1 arbitrator node) All are evenly spread across 2 physical nodes. Now, I have to somehow get the same functionality on Windows Server (2008? I think) nodes .... running under Xen virtualization. There is no possibility to use Linux for any of the nodes. I count two main problems: No Linux-HA hearbeat daemon for the load balancing No Galera synchronous replication for MySQL I freely admit to having nearly no Windows knowledge when it comes to clustering. Is there a way to closely mimic the setup I have described or is it a total write-off?

• no dual screens with 11.10 and Asus m4A89 GTD Pro

  I'm having an issue getting dual monitors working for Kubuntu 11.10. I have Asus m4A89 GTD pro/USB3 mother board with integrated Ati HD4290 graphics chip. When I try to enable multiple monitors through the system settings, it says "This module is only for configuring systems with a single desktop spread across multiple monitors. You do not appear to have this configuration." I had previously attempted to fix this problem with another installation of Ubuntu 11.10, but ended up having to reinstall ubuntu because i messed up the software center dependencies. After I installed Ubuntu the first time, a notification showed up asking me to install an Ati graphics driver. I installed this driver, then restarted, and dual monitors did not work. That was when I went to the ATI site and attempted to install the fglrx driver. When I tried to run the shell script for the fglrx driver, it said i had a previous version of an fglrx driver installed, and needed to remove it in order to install the new one. So I looked up some tutorial on how to remove it and found some apt-get remove command, which i ran. Then I was able to install the new driver. Dual monitors still did not work, and i couldn't use the software center any more because it was corrupted and was unable to repair itself. So i just reinstalled ubuntu, and now i'm trying to go about this the correct way. Does anyone have this same configuration and which driver works for you?

• PowerConnect 2848 , vlan configuration with AP

  I need to configure two vlan on an AP connected with a Dell PowerConnect 2848. The first one is up and running (let's say vlan x) , the second one is a completely different network (vlan y) , provided by a Gateway-DHCP wich i have no access, directely Patched (via patch panel) at a secondo AP device. So i cannot just plug this Gateway device on my switch without tagging traffic before, for DHCP collion . I have to solve this problem. I was thinking about tagging the traffic at the port wich I will connect the gateway device with vlan y and then set as trunk (vlanx+y) the AP port. In this way I hope to limit the vlan y traffic ONLY for the ports I selected avoiding the spread of unwanted dhcp calls. But all other ports are Unassigned , so I am not sure they won't forward dhcp (vlan y) traffic. I cannot change the Unassigned state for the vlan x ports cause vlanx is native.

• Daylight Saving Time Visualized

  When you map out the Daylight Saving Time adjusted sunrise and sunset times over the course of the year, an interesting pattern emerges. Chart designer Germanium writes: I tried to come up with the reason for the daylight saving time change by just looking at the data for sunset and sunrise times. The figure represents sunset and sunrise times thought the year. It shows that the daylight saving time change marked by the lines (DLS) is keeping the sunrise time pretty much constant throughout the whole year, while making the sunset time change a lot. The spread of sunrise times as measured by the standard deviation is 42 minutes, which means that the sunrise time changes within that range the whole year, while the standard deviation for the sunset times is 1:30 hours. Whatever the argument for doing this is, it’s pretty clear that reason is to keep the sunrise time constant. You can read more about the controversial history of Daylight Saving Time here. • Uploading.to Uploads Files to Multiple File Hosts Simultaneously

  If you’re looking to quickly share a file across a variety of file hosting services, Uploading.to makes it a cinch to share up to 10 files across 14 hosts. The upload process is simple. • Dynamic Forms: Pattern or AntiPattern?

  I'm sure you've seen it. The database has a bunch of tables called Forms, Controls,FormsControls, ControlSets, Actions and the program that queries these tables has a dynamically generated user interface. It will read all the forms, load a home page that has links to them all, or embed them in some tabbed or paged home page, and for each of those forms it will read the various text boxes, check boxes, radio buttons, submit buttons, combo boxes, labels and whatnot from the controls and form-to-control join tables, lay those elements out according to the database and link all the controls to logic according to other rules in the database. To me, this is an anti-pattern. It actually make the application more difficult to maintain because the design of it is now spread out into multiple different systems. Also, the database is not source controlled. Sure, it may make one or two changes go more quickly, after you've analyzed the program anyway to understand how to change the data and as long as you don't stray from the sort of changes that were anticipated and accounted for, but that's often just not sustainable. • Are project managers useful in Scrum?

  There are three roles defined in Scrum: Team, Product Owner and Scrum Master. There is no project manager, instead the project manager job is spread across the three roles. For instance: The Scrum Master: Responsible for the process. Removes impediments. The Product Owner: Manages and prioritizes the list of work to be done to maximize ROI. Represents all interested parties (customers, stakeholders). The Team: Self manage its work by estimating and distributing it among themselves. Responsible for meeting their own commitments. So in Scrum, there is no longer a single person responsible for project success. There is no command-and-control structure in place. That seems to baffle a lot of people, specifically those not used to agile methods, and of course, PM's. I'm really interested in this and what your experiences are, as I think this is one of the things that can make or break a Scrum implementation. Do you agree with Scrum that a project manager is not needed? Do you think such a role is still required? Why?

• Where to begin with IPv6 [closed]

  I am fairly familiar with setting-up IPv4 networks for bigger server configurations, only now I wanted to start familiarizing myself with doing the same for IPv6. I have been Googling for the second night in a row for things like: IPv6 network design, IPv6 for dummies, etc. So far most things you find go on about why IPv6 and the amazing amount of numbers that we have now. Yet I am looking for practical stuff, for example: what would be a good way to assign IP-number, as I understand it DHCP shouldn't be the default course of action. How do other assignment methods work with DNS configuration? what would be a good or standard way of dividing the network in to sub-nets? (database, application, web servers spread over multiple domains/applications and some what intertwined) In short I would like to find good resources with practical information books, webpages, etc.

• Design pattern for procedural terrain assets

  I'm developing a procedural terrain class at the moment and am stuck on the correct design pattern. The terrain is 2D and is constructed from a series of (x,y) points. I currently have a method that just randomly adds points to an array of points to generate a random spread of points. However I need a more elaborate system for generating the terrain. The terrain will be built form a series of re-accuring terrain structures eg. a pit, jump, hill etc. Each structure will have some randomness assigned to it, each height of hill will be random, pit size will be random etc. Each terrain structure will have: A property detailing the number of points making up that structure A method for generating the points (not absolutely necessary) My current thinking is to have a class for each terrain structure, create a fixed amount of terrain elements ahead of the player, loop over these and add the corresponding points to the game. What is the best way to create these procedural terrain structures when they are ultimately just a set of functions for generating terrain elements? Is a class for each terrain element excessive? I'm developing the game for iphone so any objective-c related answers would be welcome.

• Excel formula - sometimes array formula, sometimes not

  I want to write some data to an Excel file, and I want the first page to show a summary of the data that are spread all over the sheets. The individual data items on a sheet can be included or excluded, and I want the summary to be calculated only on the included values. Thus, I thought I'd use a formula like this to show, for example, an average (for which empty fields shouldn't be counted, either): =AVERAGE(IF('dataSheet1'!$B:$B=1,IF('dataSheet1'!$I:$I<>"",'dataSheet1'!$I:$I,""),"")) If I have this formula in dataSheet1, everything works fine. If I have this formula in the summary sheet, I need to enter it as an array formula, and I have to specify the exact ranges to make it work. Is there a way (aside from adding the average in dataSheet, and then referencing the result in summary) to make the formula work without having it turn into an array formula?
