• Caching static content from Adobe, Microsoft, etc

  I'm currently running the Apple SUS on a Mac OS X Server in a small office environment. It works well for Apple updates, but I'm still stuck with either manually downloading and installing Adobe/Microsoft updates on each computer or running them through a Squid cache, with the blind faith that Squid will keep the files I actually want to stay cached. What is the best way to cache updates locally for applications like the Adobe Updater or Microsoft AutoUpdate? Ideally cached in such a way that I can tell which files I do or do not have cached. It would also be nice to be able to cache things for other software like Firefox and Sparkle-enabled apps, but these are usually small enough to ignore.

• Reenabling the Spotlight Menubar item in Mac OS X 10.6

  I believe I followed the instructions here to disable Spotlight indexing and remove the menubar item. I reenabled indexing just fine, but when I changed the permissions back to 744, the spotlight search position came back (as in the space it would normally occupy), but the actual icon and search box will not show up. If I click that portion of the screen I get a blue box, but I can't type anything in to anything. Currently, permissions look like this: [~]$ ll /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle.bak/Contents/MacOS/ total 648 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 835K Sep 17 14:48 Search* ll is an alias mapped to the following alias ll='${LS_PREAMBLE} -hl' with $LS_PREAMBLE [~]$ echo $LS_PREAMBLE ls -GF (Ignore the .bak extension. I decided that until I found a way to fully restore it, I would just remove it entirely following the directions here) That looks right to me and obviously something is launching, but the UI elements aren't there. • Rsync over ssh with root access on both sides

  Hi, I have one older ubuntu server, and one newer debian server and I am migrating data from the old one to the new one. I want to use rsync to transfer data across to make final migration easier and quicker than the equivalent tar/scp/untar process. As an example, I want to sync the home folders one at a time to the new server. This requires root access at both ends as not all files at the source side are world readable and the destination has to be written with correct permissions into /home. I can't figure out how to give rsync root access on both sides. I've seen a few related questions, but none quite match what I'm trying to do. I have sudo set up and working on both servers.

• Offline installer for .net 3.5 sp1 not working

  I download a big file of .Net 3.5 SP1 from http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/0/e/20e90413-712f-438c-988e-fdaa79a8ac3d/dotnetfx35.exe Now when I try to install it on Windows Server 2012, I get the following screenshot: What the?? When will the microsoft learn? Now this is a loop. When I try to install from Server Manager, I get installation cannot be done. It needs installation disk. Does that mean I can't install at all without the installation disk in presence?

• How to find the next generated value for a auto-increment column?

  I face some trouble with IBM DB2's auto-increment columns. At first, all my columns were defined as GENERATED ALWAYS, but since I had trouble with this when using the "db2 import ..." command, I changed them to GENERATED BY DEFAULT. This is necessary, sinceI need the IDs to be consistent, because other tables reference them. So using "db2 import ... modified by identityignore ..." isn't an option. When I now import data, the IDs are inserted correctly, but everytime I do this, I have to remember to set a new start for the auto-increment column by getting the highest Id+1 and alter the column like this: SELECT MAX(mycolumn)+ 1 FROM mytable; ALTER TABLE mytable ALTER COLUMN mycolumn RESTART WITH <above_result>; If I forget this, an Insert-Statement will fail with an duplicate PK error, since the auto-increment column is the primary key. So my question is: Is there a way to find the next value for an auto-increment column, so I could write Statements that would check, if this value is less then the SELECT MAX and needs to be set? Or: Isn't this whole thing as complicated as it seems to me? Could I somehow import data, preserving the IDs and have the auto-increment column still working as expected?

• Extract first page from multiple pdfs

  Have got about 500 PDFs to go through and extract the first page of. They then need to go through some time consuming conversion process so was hoping to try and save some time by have a batch process to extract just the first page from the 500 pdfs and place it in a new pdf. Have had a poke around Acrobat but can find no real method of doing this for multiple files. Does anyone know any other programs or methods that this could be achieved? Free and open source are obviously more favourable :) EDIT: Have actually had some success using GhostScript to extract just one page. Am now looking at how to batch that and take the list of files and use those.

• Keyboard Slow on a high power machine.

  I am having a terrible time with my high powered machine. The keyboard is not displaying the keys as quickly as I type. Sometimes I have to wait up to a minute for the key to display. When I type ahead it sometimes loses characters. I am not sure where to start looking for this problem. It started about a month ago and I still have not figured out why. It does not always do it. But acts up about 2-3 minutes out of ever hour of use or thereabout. How can I look to isolate and find the problem, and solve it?

  Captured on the nameserver: 21:54:35.391126 IP resolver.7538 > server.domain: 57385% [1au] A? www.domain.de. (42) What das the percent sign in 57385% mean? As far as I can see 57385 is the clients sequence number, a plus would mean RD bit set. Second question: what does the ARCOUNT do in the query? As I understand the tcpdump man page the [1au] means tcpdump treats this as a protocol anomalie - as would I. I see this in a lot of queries.

• Puppet exported resource naming

  I am working on setting up a collection of Splunk nodes to be deployed by Puppet. One of the steps in this process is importing the trusts to allow these nodes to automatically find each other. I've looked over several options and it appears that exported resources are the only ready way to go for this to work. The files I need to create are under /opt/splunk/etc/auth/distServerKeys//trusted.pem. The source for each of these files should be /opt/splunk/etc/auth/distServerKeys/trusted.pem, one per node. What syntax do I need to make this work? The samples I've looked at all appear to have the same source and destination file name.

• Change Linux Console's Default Monitor

  Is there any way to specify which monitor the console is displayed on in Linux? Details: I have a 3 monitor setup with 2 video cards. When I boot the computer, the BIOS displays on the PCI graphics card (which has a small monitor). When starting Linux, the console is displayed on the same monitor. Is there a way to have the console output on a different monitor? I'm using the vesafb framebuffer. I don't see a way in my BIOS to change the default video card.

But I only have access to Ubuntu 12.04 near me, there is LibreOffice available under Ubuntu as well, but I am used to type math formulas in LaTex. So I wonder how to provide math formulas that will work in Microsoft Office and MathType, if I work under Ubuntu, preferably with LaTex but LibreOffice being also acceptable since it is still under Ubuntu?   We are students and we have to make a project by using SharePoint. We have already learned the basic steps of SharePoint 2010 but now we have some problems with using the Active Directory. We've deleted SharePoint from the server and afterwards we've installed the AD-role and finished dcpromo. When we’ve reinstalled SharePoint 2010, we have some problems in the configuration of SharePoint. It automatically ask for a Databaseserver but we don't have one in the company of our project. My question is if there is any possibility to use SharePoint with AD and without a Databaseserver. If it is possible it would be nice to tell me how.

• PowerPoint 2007 animated slides are only partially converted to PDF

  I have recently encountered a problem with PowerPoint 2007. When I use "Save as PDF/XPS" to create a PDF version of my presentation, some slides are only partially included in the resulting PDF file. For example, this: is reduced to this: So far, I have only encountered this with slides that contain animation elements, but which part of the elements remain in the PDF version appears not to have anything to do with the order in which the animated elements appear, so that might just be a coincidence. When viewing the affected slides in Acrobat Reader, it complains about this file containing invalid elements, and that I should complain to whoever generated the PDF file... Perhaps it has something to do with the Office 2007 Service Pack 3, because these problems started only after it had been installed. Has anyone noticed something similar? Is there a workaround?

• Blank screen after grub menu

  I just rebooted an Ubuntu Server 10.04. After choosing boot options in the grub menu, though, it just displays a black screen with the blinking white underscore in the upper-left corner. The machine has had (hardware) trouble with networking before, but the problem remains after 10 minutes, so I don't think it's the problem now. Booting into recovery mode or using earlier kernels yields the same problem. This also happens if I boot from another hard-drive. I haven't yet tried to boot from CD as the machine lacks a CD reader. How should I diagnose the problem? • Different Results of Scanning Wireless Networks

  Hi, I found that under Ubuntu, WICD and command "/sbin/iwlist wlan0 scan" give a little different list of wireless networks. Windows 7 also gives a slightly different list.   I've pointed the command-line to the right codepage (chcp 65001), but there's a lot of Unicode characters that Consolas and Lucida Console can't show. Specifically, I want the printable IPA characters to show up. It's not important to fix multi-codepoint glyphs, although it would be nice. The installation has been steadily upgraded but for various reasons, we want to start again on a new server with a clean install from the distribution media. Will I be able to take a backup from the old server and restore it to the new server, even though the installs are different versions? How sensitive are FreePBX backups to the build version? • Make GRUB 2 boot Windows 8 safe mode

  I have a dual boot configuration: Windows 8 Consumer and Ubuntu 11.10. I tried to install the Asus drivers for my motherboard (P8Z68-V LE EFI) in windows 8, and i now get bluescreens when starting windows. Holding F8 or Shift-F8 doesn't seem to be working, so is there another way to get into Safe Mode, or uninstall the errant driver? I need to get into Safe Mode in windows to fix the issue. Things I have tried: Disabling overclock Holding F8 or Shift+F8 How can i get GRUB 2 to boot windows 8 in safe mode? Or is there another way to disable a driver that is making it impossible to boot?

  I have some videos from a few years ago,with various formats, such as avi, mpg, wmv, rm, rmvb, .... Their sizes are huge(more than 500 MB, and sometimes 1GB). Given there may likely be some advance in data compression, I would like to know which file formats and compression methods are recommended these days, by the standard that without losing obvious data, while achieving big size reduction. How can I perform the file format conversion and data compression in Ubuntu 12.04? Command line and batch ways would be the most convenient, although GUI ways are also appreciated. • Is it possible to do a web search filtered for the user's comprehension level? [migrated]

  Do any of the major search engines support a filter to indicate the comprehension level of the user and thus to filter out content beyond their scope? So for example, if someone wanted to find results on "astronomy", but to only show content appropriate for someone in junior-high or lower. Alternatively, if there isn't such an existing method directly, any ideas on how this might be accomplished with existing tools? I found this paper, which seems to indicate folks have looked at this, just don't know if there is a real world tool to do this.

• Have I created the recovery disk from recovery partition correctly?

  I was creating recovery disk from recovery partition on my Lenovo T400 with Windows 7. 6.5 GB of the recovery partition has been occupied. But in the process, I created three DVDs. I might remember wrong, but the first two DVDs were called by the wizard as disk 1, and the third one was called disk 2. The first one has been written 0.22 GB only. Following is the content of the DVD (right click the image and select view the image in a bigger size): The second one has been written 3.97 GB as follows: The third one has been written 2.44 GB as follows: I am allowed only one time to create recovery disk. So I cannot try again. So I was wondering if I missed something? How is the creation process supposed to be like? Thanks and regards!
