  • How do you manage all of the information you have learned and found? [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: How do you manage your knowledge base? What do you use for personal note taking to keep track of everything you learn? Are you always Googling or searching StackOverflow to answer the same questions? Or searching for and copying and pasting existing code? I feel like I have a poor memory, especially remembering things like syntax. Are there any knowledge management systems that would work well for a programming language or operating system? It would be great if there were a way to save everything I learn in an easy to search system. Does such a thing exist? Maybe you would be able to search by question (How to sort an array?, How to set static IP?), or by tag (sort, array, enumeration, iterator, IP). I know it would be easy to develop my own system, but I thought it would be great to learn what works for other people.

    I am working with the tree data structure and trying to come up with a way to calculate information I can gain from the nodes of the tree. I am wondering if there are any existing techniques which can assign higher numerical importance to a node which appears less frequently at lower level (Distance from the root of the tree) than the same nodes appearance at higher level and high frequency. To give an example, I want to give more significance to node Book, at level 2 appearing once, then at level 3 appearing thrice. Will appreciate any suggestions/pointers to techniques which achieve something similar. Thanks, Prateek

    I am looking to extract specific items out of a large pool of unstructured documents. These documents could be 1-5 pages of text formatted in various ways by the user, but in most cases would contain at least: Name Address (physical) Email Address Phone number website URL I'm looking for a semantic parser that can attempt to extract these elements from the documents so that I can load that information into a relational database and work with these records as contacts.   • Win7 Domain User Profile- Desktop Icon management best practices request

    Here's the situation: We have a large (5,000+ user) organization that is currently using folder redirection to manage the windows desktop icons. This folder is redirected to a network share where we can centrally manage the different sites and such. When a user tries to use a computer when the network is not available, they are unable to use any shortcuts in the Public folder. We only redirect the C:\Users\%username%\Desktop folder. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to go about managing desktop icons? We still want a central location to manage these items, but find a way to keep the system working when the network is unavailable. As a point of clarification, the network rarely goes down. We do have instances where a few computers do not have a network connection. Usually, something is simply unplugged. Since we have multiple sites, the line from a branch to the central office has gone down a few times. This is more of an attempt to maintain a positive end user experience when disconnected from the network.

    I have a model defined as below: class Example(models.Model): user = models.ForeignKey(User, null=True) other = models.CharField(max_length=100) The problem is Django refuses to assign django.contrib.auth.models.AnonymousUser directly to Example.user as null field so everytime I have to check if request.user.is_authenticated() ans assign Example.user = None manually. Is there a default value for AnonymousUser to use in a model field?

    Do you like to monitor your system but do not want a complicated app to do it with? If you love simplicity and easy configuration then join us as we look at Desktop Info. Desktop Info in Action Desktop Info comes in a zip file format so you will need to unzip the app, place it into an appropriate “Program Files Folder”, and create a shortcut. Do NOT delete the “Read Me File”…this will be extremely useful to you when you make changes to the “Configuration File”. Once you have everything set up you are ready to start Desktop Info up. This is the default layout and set of listings displayed when you start Desktop Info up for the first time. The font colors will be a mix of colors as seen here and the font size will perhaps be a bit small but those are very easy to change if desired. You can access the “Context Menu” directly over the “information area”…so no need to look for it in the “System Tray”. Notice that you can easily access that important “Read Me File” from here… The full contents of the configuration file (.ini file) are displayed here so that you can see exactly what kind of information can be displayed using the default listings. The first section is “Options”…you will most likely want to increase the font size while you are here. Then “Items”… If you are unhappy with any of the font colors in the “information area” this is where you can make the changes. You can turn information display items on or off here. And finally “Files, Registry, & Event Logs”. Here is our displayed information after a few tweaks in the configuration file. Very nice. Conclusion If you have been looking for a system information app that is simple and easy to set up then you should definitely give Desktop Info a try.   • Problem with implementing removeAll for List of custom object

    Hello everyone, I have a scenario in my code where I need to compare two Lists and remove from the first list, objects which are present in the second list. Akin to how the "removeAll" object works for List. Since my List is created on a custom object, the removeAll method won't work for me. I have tried various methods to make this work: - implemented equals() and hashCode for the custom object comprising the list - implemented the Comparable Interface for the custom object - implemented the Comparator Interface for the custom object I've even tried using the Apache Common's CollectionUtils and ListUtils methods (subtract, intersect, removeAll). None seem to work. I understand I will perhaps need to write some custom removal code. But not sure how to go about doing that. Any pointers helping me move in the right direction will be really appreciated. Thanks, Jay

Note, if you just do apply(foo, 1, function(x) list(c(x[1], x[2]))), it returns a list within a list, which I'm hoping to avoid.

    I have two custom lists in sharepoint with a one to many relationship on a column in both lists. So list A has text column 1 and list B has a lookup column 1' on list A's column 1. I want to display the rows in list A, where column 1 has a match on column 1' and a 2nd column in list B with a specific text string.     I'm curious how others address this issue. Using VSEWSS 1.3, I have created a site content type, a list definition (w event receivers), and a list instance. All of them are in the same WSP solution and each is activated individually via features. Now let's assume that all the features have been activated for some time, and the list instance contains a number of items (that can't be deleted). Now suppose I need to make a change to the schema.xml (inject some javascript, modify views, whatever) of the list. Is it even possible to "upgrade" the schema of the existing list instance? Otherwise I would think I'm stuck creating a new instance and copying items over.

    Hello, By a question that I made, I figured out that tho copy elements from one list to an array I just need to use the method toArray() for this. But let's suppose I have a List with n objects. I want to copy then into a array sized n+1 and add into the first position another object and in the other n positions the n data of the list.     I'd like to know if there is a class available, either in the standard library or in pypi, that fits this description. The constructor would take an iterator. It would implement the container protocol (ie _getitem_, _len_, etc), so that slices, length, etc., would work. In doing so, it would iterate and retain just enough values from its constructor argument to provide whatever information was requested. So if jitlist[6] was requested, it would call self.source.next() 7 times, save those elements in its list, and return the last one. This would allow downstream code to use it as a list, but avoid unnecessarily instantiating a list for cases where list functionality was not needed, and avoid allocating memory for the entire list if only a few members ended up being requested. It seems like a pretty easy one to write, but it also seems useful enough that it's likely that someone would have already made it available in a module.

Say the inner list of three elements in size and looks like this: ['apple', 'fruit', 1.23] The outer list looks like this data = [['apple', 'fruit', 1.23], ['pear', 'fruit', 2.34], ['lettuce', 'vegetable', 3.45]] I want to iterate through the outer list and cull data for a temporary list only in the case that element 1 matches some keyword (aka: 'fruit'). So, if I'm matching fruit, I would end up with this: tempList = [('apple', 1.23), ('pear', 2.34)] This is one way to accomplish this: tempList = [] for i in data: if i[1] == 'fruit': tempList.append(i[0], i[2]) is there some 'Pythonic' way to do this in fewer lines?

  • Display/Hide part of a list

    Hi I have an (unordered)list (generated by a repeater) of items. However, I'd like to show the first three items, and have the rest hidden by the main content div. When a button is pressed, I would like the list's div to expand, pushing the main content div down and showing the rest of the list. I was thinking of using slideDown(), but that closes the entire div ( and I would like to show the first 3 items of the list). What would be the best way to achieve an effect like this? Is there a plugin that can easily show X items of a list and the display the rest upon request? Thanks

    I'm trying to figure out a good way of implementing a List(Of) that holds a maximum number of records. e.g. I have a List(Of Int32) - it's being populated every 2 seconds with a new Int32 item. I want to store only the most current 2000 items. How can I make the list hold a maximum of 2000 items, then when the 2001'th item is attempted to be added, the List drops the 2000'th item (resulting in the current total being 1999). Thing is, I need to make sure I'm dropping only the oldest item and adding a new item into the List. Ben

    Is there a way to display User fields under a form that adds/edits a UserProfile model? I am extending default Django User model like this: class UserProfile(models.Model): user = models.OneToOneField(User, unique=True) about = models.TextField(blank=True) I know that it is possible to make a: class UserProfileInlineAdmin(admin.TabularInline): and then inline this in User ModelAdmin but I want to achieve the opposite effect, something like inverse inlining, displaying the fields of the model pointed by the OneToOne Relationship (User) in the page of the model defining the relationship (UserProfile). I don't care if it would be in the admin or in a custom view/template. I just need to know how to achieve this. I've been struggling with ModelForms and Formsets, I know the answer is somewhere there, but my little experience in Django doesn't allow me to come up with the solution yet. A little example would be really helpful!

    I'm a bit lost on the way to make this happen the fastest. I have a large list of objects that have basic variable attributes (with getters / setters) and I need to do a search in this list to find the objects within the list that match a given parameter I have found how to do a regular list search but I need to, for example search for the value of the result of doing a call getName() for each object in the list and get objects that have a result that matches my input. Something like below where the third argument is the result of the method call and the second is what I am trying to find. int index = Collections.binarySearch(myList, "value", getName()); Any advice is appreciated

    Hello. I have a TileList which represents some remote data. I also have a form which allows me to change the data. And the data may be changed by someone else too. What is the best way to maintain data in the list in an up-to-date state? The simplest option I see is the following: Select an item in the list Edit it in the form Save it. The form submits the data to the server When the server reports success the list re-fetches it's data The very bad thing about this workflow is that the list loses selection (a tree would also loose the nodes' expanded/collapsed state). I would really love to find out another option which would enable the list to maintain it's selection state. Any guesses on how it may be done?
