  • What are the reasons to use SQL Server instead of MySQL with a complex .Net project?

    We currently have a 10 year old nasty, spaghetti-code-style SQL Server database that we are soon looking to pretty much re-write from scratch as part of a re-write to a large web application. (The existing application will serve as the functional requirements for the next incarnation of the app) The new version will be developed in .Net, so a large portion of the application stack will be based on Microsoft technologies (Visual Studio will be used IIS will be the application server). One of the developers on the project has raised the possibility of switching to MySQL instead of SQL Server in order to save on cost for both the licence of the DB server, as well as the tools to design and manipulate the DB (such as the wonderfully free MySQL Workbench). What are the various pros and cons of using SQL Server vs. MySQL as the database for a complex .Net project? Price is one factor we have identified, both in terms of the DB server licence as well as tools to manipulate the DB, but what other factors come into play?

  • flex checkbox value not selected from database

    Hi, I have a small flex datagrid. The dataProvider is an xmlList. I have two columns, userList and user permissions. The user permissions column as checkboxes. The values for the checkbox are stored as 0 and 1 in mySQL. While returning it from PHP, I am converting them to true or false. Its returning the values correctly to the frontend. But inside the itemrenderer, the checkbox is not being set to true or false. Either everything is true or everything is false. Here is my code. http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/4ba76933d3.gif How can I correctly set the value of the checkboxes from the DB values? Please help.

  • Fastest way to compress a database or .bak file and transfer it

    As per the question title. I wonder if there are special programmes or commands that makes zipping up a .bak file and transferring it super quick. I read abour xp_cmdshell here but I'm not sure about the speed. My .bak file is about 12 gigs at the moment. Related to this is the possibility of using Red Gate's SQL Data Compare to just transfer the differential data across the network pipeline but I have never used SQL Data Compare before and I'm not sure how it goes about doing INSERTS on tables with Primary Keys and such. Also, not sure about the speed. Does anyone have any experience with this programme or similar programmes? Cheers!

  • Table and column naming conventions when plural and singular forms are odd or the same

    In my search I found mostly arguments for whether to use plurality in database naming conventions, and ways to handle it in either case. I have decided I prefer plural table names, so I don't want to argue that. I need to represent an animal's species and genus and so on in a database. The plural and singular form for 'species' are the same, and the plural of 'genus' is 'genera'. I think I can get by with: Table: Genera | Column: Genus But I'm unsure how I should handle: Table: Species | Column: Species If I really wanted to be lazy about this I'd just name them 'species specie' and 'genuses genus', but I would prefer to read them in their correct forms. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi! Is it smart to keep arrays in table columns? More precisely I am thinking of the following schema which to my understanding violates normalization: create table Permissions( GroupID int not null default(-1), CategoryID int not null default(-1), Permissions varchar(max) not null default(''), constraint PK_GroupCategory primary key clustered(GroupID,CategoryID) ); and this: create table Permissions( GroupID int not null default(-1), CategoryID int not null default(-1), PermissionID int not null default(-1), constraint PK_GroupCategory primary key clustered(GroupID,CategoryID) ); UPD: Forgot to mention, in the scope of this concrete question we will consider that the "fetch rows that have permission X" won't be performed, instead all the lookups will be made by GroupID and CategoryID only Thoughts?     I'm not very fluent with SQL Server commands. I need a script to restore a database from a .bak file and move the logical_data and logical_log files to a specific path. I can do: restore filelistonly from disk='D:\backups\my_backup.bak' This will give me a result set with a column LogicalName, next I need to use the logical names from the result set in the restore command: restore database my_db_name from disk='d:\backups\my_backups.bak' with file=1, move 'logical_data_file' to 'd:\data\mydb.mdf', move 'logical_log_file' to 'd:\data\mylog.ldf' How do I capture the logical names from the first result set into variables that can be supplied to the "move" command? I think the solution might be trivial, but I'm pretty new to SQL Server.

    I'm working on a legacy VB6 app here at work, and it has been a long time since I've looked at VB6 or ADO. One thing the app does is to executes SQL Tasks and then to output the success/failure into an XML file. If there is an error it inserts the text the task node. What I have been asked to do is try and do the same with the other mundane messages that result from succesfully executed tasks, like (323 row(s) affected). There is no command object being used, it's just an ADODB.Connection object.     I've been designing an application, based on .NET/Mono framework, which should make an heavy use of the shortest-path in a graph theories and I would like to use a native solution to traverse the nodes of the graph, instead of implementing surrogate solutions which would be hardly maintainable and would massively affect performances. I've found an application which would be perfect for my scope: neo4j. Unfortunately, this application is purely written in Java code and it's not portable to .NET, because of the massive differences between the two architectures. Is anyone out there knows if is it there any port of neo4j or a similar solution for .NET?

  • Return only the new database items since last check in Rails

    I'm fairly new to Ruby, and currently trying to implement an AJAX style commenting system. When the user views a topic, all the current comments on that topic will be displayed. The user can post a comment on the page of a topic and it should automatically display without having to refresh the page, along with any new comments that have been posted since the last comment currently displayed to the user. The comments should also automatically refresh at a specified frequency. From what I can tell, the @latest_time gets constantly reset to the earliest created_at, rather than staying updated to the latest created_at after the comments have been retrieved. I'm also not sure how I should directly refresh the comments when a comment is posted. Is it possible to force a call to periodically_call_remote on a successful save?

  • locking database record for editing

    I have a SQL 2008 DB and an asp.net frontend. I would like to implement a lock when a user is currently editing a record but unsure of which is the best approach. My idea is to have a isLocked column for the records and it gets set to true when a user pulls that record, meaning all other users have read only access until the first user finishes the editing. However, what if the session times out and he/she never saves/updates the record, the record will remain with isLocked = true, meaning others cannot edit it, right? How can I implement some sort of session time out and have isLocked be automatically set to false when the session times out (or after a predefined period) Should this be implemented on the asp.net side or the SQL side?

  • How do you verify the correct data is in a data mart?

    I'm working on a data warehouse and I'm trying to figure out how to best verify that data from our data cleansing (normalized) database makes it into our data marts correctly. I've done some searches, but the results so far talk more about ensuring things like constraints are in place and that you need to do data validation during the ETL process (E.g. dates are valid, etc.). The dimensions were pretty easy as I could easily either leverage the primary key or write a very simple and verifiable query to get the data. The fact tables are more complex. Any thoughts? We're trying to make this very easy for a subject matter export to run a couple queries, see some data from both the data cleansing database and the data marts, and visually compare the two to ensure they are correct.

  • How to retrieve a bigint from a database and place it into an Int64 in SSIS

    I ran into this problem a couple years back and am hoping there has been a fix and I just don't know about it. I am using an 'Execute SQL Task' in the Control Flow of an SSIS package to retrieve a 'bigint' ID value. The task is supposed to place this in an Int64 SSIS variable but I getting the error: "The type of the value being assigned to variable "User::AuditID" differs from the current variable type. Variables may not change type during execution. Variable types are strict, except for variables of type Object." When I brought this to MS' attention a couple years back they stated that I had to 'work around' this by placing the bigint into an SSIS object variable and then converting the value to Int64 as needed. The language is going to be C#, and so I'd like to use this opportunity to get my head around LINQ to SQL. I have some DB experience and I know my SQL, but it was all in school using Access, which is giving me trouble, and so I'd like to use another DB, something that is small in size, easy to install, and should work with LINQ to SQL. The problem is: I don't know any except Access, and am looking for recommendations. To sum it up: I need a lightweight, easy to install, linq-to-sql supporting database for a small system on a home computer, any recommendations?

  • How to group a database write and spreadsheet write in single "transaction"

    I have a Java program that writes results to both a DB (SQL Server) and a spreadsheet (POI), and it would be best if neither is written to if there's an error with either. It would be a lot worse if the spreadsheet was produced and then an error happened while saving to the DB, so I'm doing the DB-write first. Even so, I'm wondering if someone knows of a way to guarantee they both succeed or fail as a unit. Thanks!

  • Managing important runtime business logic with regard to a codebase

    I'm working on a project which will end up have a lot of application information stored in the form of records in a database. In this case, it's the configuration of data views: which grid columns to show/hide default filters to apply to each grid view column titles sorting subtotaling ... This information is a big part of the value of the application and is essential to it's function. The data will be altered by admins a fair amount, so it's not static and it wouldn't be appropriate to have to deploy a new version of the app every time the data changes. The question is, Where should this data be stored? It will definitely live in the database because that's how it's accessed, but I feel like it needs to also be kept with the version controlled codebase because it's an integral part of functioning of the application. Has anyone dealt with an issue like this before? What did you end up doing?
