• How to turn off Tomcat logging in Eclipse?

  I develop a Vaadin project in Eclipse that I start through Tomcat 6 which gets started directly by Eclipse. Tomcat prints an enormous amount of log messages though on each start which makes it hard to see the output of my own Application. I have already replaced all log levels in tomcat6/conf/logging.properties by WARNING (e.g. java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler.level = WARNING) but I still get many INFO messages. How can I turn this off or restrict the log messages to WARNING? • Power supply switch like stays off motherboard light turns on

  I bought a computer at the thrift store yesterday. The computer powered on without any error beeps. Getting it back to the house determined that the CD and hard drive needed to be changed. Put in a populated hard drive to check, the computer turned on and seemed to function. Put in a new CD drive, and just put in a new Hard drive. I plugged it in to check and I noticed that the light for the power supply switch did not come on. But I did notice that the light on the motherboard is lit. and I could not turn the computer on. To help troubleshoot it I unplugged the CD and Hard drive. then re-plugged the power supply and switched it on and off. Nothing changed. Parts: Motherboard: Digital Home PSW DH deluxe Power Supply: FSP-Group FX700-GLN Did I accidentally unplug something while installing the hard drive? Is the Power supply fried somehow?

• vSphere - datastore falling off a host

  Recently we have been running the vCheck powershell script daily in order to help in monitoring our vSphere ESX 4.0 environment. One of the oddities that we have been seeing is that some of the datastores on the SAN don't always show up on every host. Our hosts are connected redundantly, via FC, to some brocade FC switches, which then connect via fiber to our EMC Ax4 SAN. While all the datastores are presented to each host we have, and they see them initially, they sometimes seem to fall off and are no longer visible. It easy enough to rescan for datastores and add them back to the hosts the hosts but this seems to be an error. Has anyone else seen this or know why it may be happening? Responses to questions: 1. Is it always the same ESX servers that lose their connection? – Scott Warren No this happens randomly on random hosts. If a VM is running on a particular host, of which the VM's disks are on a SAN datastore, then that datastore won't disappear. It seems to happen if a host doesn't touch a datastore for a bit and it just forgets about it.

• How to wipe the slate clean on an Oracle installation?

  After a basic, successful installation of Oracle 11g, I ran dbca again to enable Enterprise Manager on my database. The operation hung at around 67% for half an hour or more, so I clicked Stop to abort the operation. Things seemed to wrap up cleanly, EM was working, all was well with the world. Then I started getting this dreaded error upon any attempt to connect in SQL*Plus: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified I thought perhaps the database had been corrupted due to the earlier aborted operation, so I ran dbca again and deleted the database. Then I attempted to create a new database in its stead, using a clone of the template created the first time around. Unfortunately, the clone database operation fails at 50% with the exact same error: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified How can I clean up the mess I have created, short of reinstalling Oracle entirely from scratch?

• Suspending/Screen Going Off When Still In Use (Ubuntu & Arch)

  I have a laptop (HP Pavilion G6) that was running Ubuntu and for a while now (at least 6 months) has been having a problems randomly suspending whilst still in use with a full battery and still being charged. Originally the problem was with Ubuntu so I first attempted to disable suspend using every way I could find (gui settings + dconf editor) this didn't work and it still kept suspending so I ended up switching to Arch Linux. Unfortunately not long after switching to Arch Linux I ended up experiencing the same problems. So yet again I modified the settings in /etc/systemd/logind.conf to prevent it from suspending and this time it worked, kind of. Now I am experiencing the screen going off and I have to change to a different tty (by using ctrl-alt-fx, which was something I also found I had to do sometimes when waking up from suspend in Ubuntu) to get the screen to go back on. The strange thing is this only happens when running a Linux distros and only occasionally (e.g. it may happen once/twice a week at most). But when it does happen it can happen multiple times in a row. And it only seems to happen when I am using it. This may just mean that it hasn't happened yet when I am not but generally if I leave it to run something or play a video it hasn't occurred only when I am using it regardless of which program I am using (e.g. it has occurred when using firefox, vim, even when using a virtualbox vm). At first I thought it could be the CPU temperature but after monitoring it I discovered it occurred a lot of the time when my CPU was less than 50 °C. I then checked /var/log/* but could not see anything related to it suspending only a few standard things from when it was woken up. I am really out of ideas and really hoping someone can help. • Autossh startup on Ubuntu 10.04 - fails after powering off

  I'm using upstart to keep a reverse ssh tunnel alive using auto ssh similar to Using Upstart to Manage AutoSSH Reverse Tunnel. This works fine, except after a manual power down I can no longer connect to the machine through the "central server" using the tunnel. I receive "ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host". The autossh process is running on the client. I can connect again after re-starting networking. I'm trying to figure out why this is failing consistently after a manual shutdown. Is it possible that I need to do some cleanup on startup that would allow the tunnel to work in this situation, or are there some other debugging/troubleshooting steps I can take to determine the problem? Machine A is the client machine, using autossh. This machine sits behind a firewall and uses the following command in upstart to create an ssh tunnel: /usr/bin/autossh -fN -i /keyfile -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no -R 20098:localhost:22 user@centralserver Machine B we'll call the "central server", which sits in the cloud and is the host. This machine is "centralserver" in the command above. When Machine A is hard powered off, and back on, I cannot connect to it by SSH'ing from my machine (C) to Machine B in the cloud, then using the following command to get to Machine A: ssh -p 2098 user@localhost Again, after a reboot of the client (A), this works fine. It is only after a hard power down that the problem occurs. There are autossh processes that are running on the client machine (A) after powering down and back up, but they just don't seem to doing their job.

• Nagios: turn off service checks/display on down hosts

  I want to to tweak nagios in such a way that all checking stops (with services not displayed, or displayed as unknown) for any down node. Said differently I only want to see one alert for a down host instead of 1 (down) + n (1 for every service). Note that I am interested in service display/status, not only in turning off notifications. Rationale: we use the nagios firefox/chrome plugin to monitor status and nagios' behavior is too noisy giving readings like these (because every node has 20 services): 3 down, 1 unreachable, 4 warnings, 87 critical This means that the 7 critical services on up node (the problem is on the service) are swamped in a slab of red services which are critical only because they sit on a node that's down/unreachable. What I'd rather like to see is: 3 down, 1 unreachable, 80 unknown, 4 warnings, 7 critical Or even 3 down, 1 unreachable, 4 warnings, 7 critical I have looked in service dependencies but I did not fine a way to describe: "make all services on a alive-host dependen on the status of the host check". I found the problem discussed here, where one of the participants thought it was a nagios bug, and here where one of the participants thought it was "as designed". As things are, I am just interested in the effect, much less in the design philosophy. Note that this nagios is checking hundreds of nodes, so the maintainablilty of the solution is also important. • cx_Oracle makes subprocess give OSError

  I am trying to use the cx_Oracle module with python 2.6.6 on ubuntu Maverick, with Oracle 11gR2 Enterprise edition. I am able to connect to my oracle db just fine, but once I do that, the subprocess module does not work anymore. Here is an iPython session that reproduces the problem... Even if I have closed the connection to the database. Looking around, I found http://bugs.python.org/issue1731717 as somewhat related to this issue, but I am not dealing with threads here. I don't know if cx_Oracle is. Moreover, the above issue mentions that adding a time.sleep(1) fixes it, but it didn't help me. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

  I downloaded the free express edition of oracle, Oracle XE. I couldn't find the pro*c compiler in this edition. I read somewhere that oracle 9i client has pro*C, So I presumed that oracle client for 10g XE should have it too and downloaded it. But to my disappointment, I can't find it there too. :(. Is there a way to download the older oracle 9i and use it connect to 10g XE without any compatibility problems?. Or is it possible to download the pro*C compiler alone?. I don't want to download the standard editions as they are too large(2 GB). Thanks.

Introduction and Definitions A JMS queue in Weblogic Server is associated with a number of additional resources: JMS Server A JMS server acts as a management container for resources within JMS modules. Some of its responsibilities include the maintenance of persistence and state of messages and subscribers. A JMS server is required in order to create a JMS module. JMS Module A JMS module is a definition which contains JMS resources such as queues and topics. A JMS module is required in order to create a JMS queue. Subdeployment JMS modules are targeted to one or more WLS instances or a cluster. Resources within a JMS module, such as queues and topics are also targeted to a JMS server or WLS server instances. A subdeployment is a grouping of targets. It is also known as advanced targeting. Connection Factory A connection factory is a resource that enables JMS clients to create connections to JMS destinations. JMS Queue A JMS queue (as opposed to a JMS topic) is a point-to-point destination type. A message is written to a specific queue or received from a specific queue. The objects used in this example are: Object Name Type JNDI Name TestJMSServer JMS Server TestJMSModule JMS Module TestSubDeployment Subdeployment TestConnectionFactory Connection Factory jms/TestConnectionFactory TestJMSQueue JMS Queue jms/TestJMSQueue 2. Configuration Steps The following steps are done in the WebLogic Server Console, beginning with the left-hand navigation menu. 2.1 Create a JMS Server Services > Messaging > JMS Servers Select New Name: TestJMSServer Persistent Store: (none) Target: soa_server1  (or choose an available server) Finish The JMS server should now be visible in the list with Health OK. 2.2 Create a JMS Module Services > Messaging > JMS Modules Select New Name: TestJMSModule Leave the other options empty Targets: soa_server1  (or choose the same one as the JMS server)Press Next Leave “Would you like to add resources to this JMS system module” unchecked and  press Finish . 2.3 Create a SubDeployment A subdeployment is not necessary for the JMS queue to work, but it allows you to easily target subcomponents of the JMS module to a single target or group of targets. We will use the subdeployment in this example to target the following connection factory and JMS queue to the JMS server we created earlier. Services > Messaging > JMS Modules Select TestJMSModule Select the Subdeployments  tab and New Subdeployment Name: TestSubdeployment Press Next Here you can select the target(s) for the subdeployment. You can choose either Servers (i.e. WebLogic managed servers, such as the soa_server1) or JMS Servers such as the JMS Server created earlier. As the purpose of our subdeployment in this example is to target a specific JMS server, we will choose the JMS Server option. Select the TestJMSServer created earlier Press Finish 2.4  Create a Connection Factory Services > Messaging > JMS Modules Select TestJMSModule  and press New Select Connection Factory  and Next Name: TestConnectionFactory JNDI Name: jms/TestConnectionFactory Leave the other values at default On the Targets page, select the Advanced Targeting  button and select TestSubdeployment Press Finish The connection factory should be listed on the following page with TestSubdeployment and TestJMSServer as the target. 2.5 Create a JMS Queue Services > Messaging > JMS Modules Select TestJMSModule  and press New Select Queue and Next Name: TestJMSQueueJNDI Name: jms/TestJMSQueueTemplate: NonePress Next Subdeployments: TestSubdeployment Finish The TestJMSQueue should be listed on the following page with TestSubdeployment and TestJMSServer. I hope to have more tips, best practices - but here is a quick thing that people seem to trip up on..."How to Run OWSM related WLST commands" The most common issue people seem to run into is trying to run the OWSM WLST commands from the wrong location. You need to run the WLST commands from "oracle_common/common/bin/wlst.sh" (ex: /home/Oracle/Middleware/oracle_common/common/bin/wlst.sh) This is documented in the OWSM doc (Security And Administrator's Guide) under the section "Accessing the Web Services Custom WLST Commands". Note: This location is different from the location from where you run the SOA WLST commands. If you try to run the OWSM WLST command from the wrong location - you will see errors like the following: "The MBean ,@ oracle.wsm:*,name=WSMDocumentManager,type=Repository was not found"

However, the upgrade from Release 11i to Release 12.1 spans many years of EBS evolution, during which time Oracle has actively been building many new features and modules.
