• Could Grand Central Dispatch (`libdispatch`) ever be made available on Windows?

  I’m looking into multithreading, and GCD seems like a much better option than manually writing a solution using pthread.h and pthreads-win32. However, although it looks like libdispatch is either working on, or soon going to be working on, most newer POSIX-compatible systems… I have to ask, what about Windows? What are the chances of libdispatch being ported to Windows? What are the barriers preventing that from happening? If it came down to it, what would I need to do to preform that portage? Edit: Some things I already know, to get the discussion started: We need a blocks-compatible compiler that will compile on Windows, no? Will PLBlocks handle that? Can we use the LLVM blocks runtime? Can’t we replace all the pthread.h dependencies in userspace libdispatch with APR calls, for portability? Or, alternatively, use pthreads-win32 I suppose…

• A maximum character limit on the preg functions?

  On my site I use output buffering to grab all the output and then run it through a process function before sending it out to the browser (I don't replace anything, just break it into more manageable pieces). In this particular case, there is a massive amount of output because it is listing out a label for every country in the database (around 240 countries). The problem is that in full, my preg_match functions seems to get skipped over, it does absolutely nothing and returns no matches. However, if I remove parts of the labels (no particular part, just random pieces to reduce characters) then the preg_match functions works again. It doesn't seem to matter what I remove from the label, it just seems to be that as long as I remove so many characters. Is there some sort of cap on what the preg functions can handle or will it time out if there is too much data to be scanned over?

  A SELECT without a FROM clause gets us a multiple columns without querying a table: SELECT 17+23, REPLACE('bannanna', 'nn', 'n'), RAND(), CURRENT_TIMESTAMP; How can we write a query that results in multiple rows without referring to a table? Basically, abuse SELECT to turn it into a data definition statement. The result could have a single column or multiple columns. I'm most interested in a DBMS neutral answer, but others (e.g. based on UNPIVOT) are welcome. There's no technique application behind this question; it's more theoretical than practical.

• Passing an array of data as an input parameter to an Oracle procedure

  I'm trying to pass an array of (varchar) data into an Oracle procedure. The Oracle procedure would be either called from SQL*Plus or from another PL/SQL procedure like so: BEGIN pr_perform_task('1','2','3','4'); END; pr_perform_task will read each of the input parameters and perform the tasks. I'm not sure as to how I can achieve this. My first thought was to use an input parameter of type varray but I'm getting Error: PLS-00201: identifier 'VARRAY' must be declared error, when the procedure definiton looks like this: CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE PR_DELETE_RECORD_VARRAY(P_ID VARRAY) IS To summarize, how can I pass the data as an array, let the SP loop through each of the parameters and perform the task ? I'm using Oracle 10gR2 as my database.

• Can Hibernate default a Null String to Empty String

  In our application we are pulling data from a DB2 mainframe database. If the database has "low values" in a field, hibernate sends a "null" value in the object. This occurs even if the column is defined as "not null". As we are doing XML parsing on this, Castor is having trouble with it. I would like to fix this in Hibernate. Also, all of the hibernate hbm files are generated, so we can't mess with them (they are regened from time to time.) Any way to intercept all Strings and replace nulls with ""?

  Hi there, I'm struggling a bit with this regular expression and wondered if anyone was about to help me please? What I need to do is isolate the 1st phrase inside a string which is NOT inside an HTML tag. So the examples I have at the moment are: This is some test text about ITS for the ITS department. Also worth mentioning ABS as well I guess.ITS, ... and ... This is some ITS test text about ITS for the ITS department. Also worth mentioning ABS as well I guess So in the first example I want it to ignore the wrapped ITS and give me the ITS at the end of the 1st sentence. In the second example I want it to return the ITS at the start of the 2nd sentence. The aim is to replace these with my own custom wrapped acronym tags in a ColdFusion application I'm writing. • How stable or unstable is symfony 2.0 ?

  Well, I know it's a preview, and I know it says that it's not yet ready for production, and yet I dare ask the question. I need to start building a pretty big application, which is planned to go live at around sep-oct 2010. Lets say I will not release the application to production until the stable version of symfony 2.0 will be released - is it a good idea (well, I'll settle for a viable idea) for me to start building the application using the 2.0 version ? How big is the chance I will need to rewrite/replace code I've written due to core changes in the framework ? Thanks. Edit: the other option right now, is to use symfony 1.4. I have thought and tried Zend Framework, but I refuse to re-invent each and every module, which will cost me a lot of programming hours (if not days/weeks).

  Hi, I was going through an example from Programming in Ruby book. Thats fine. My question here is when i replace the parallel assignment with something like this, i1 = i2 i2 = i1+i2 I am not getting the desired output. My question here is, is it advisable to use parallel assignments? (I come from Java background and it feels really wierd to see this type of assignment) One more doubt is : Is parallel assignment an operator?? Thanks

  I have a list of itens and they are holding images, each image is 800w x 600 H.   I want to have dynamically created views and be able to scroll(change views like in camera roll) either from my program or user should also be able to do that. The views should contain only a simple text. Each view has to replace other, so they are like chained. The other example is the screenshots of applications in app store application details.   I am creating an extension where I need to insert a link into the gmail window. I am able to create a simple extension button in the top of the window and execute code that does replaces all the links. Now, I want to do add links in the contenteditable section as I type. It seems like there should be a simple way to replace text with a link in the document object model. If this is not true I need to do three things. Insert text from the current caret position Capture the caret position. Set the caret position by its offset. I have tried using window.getSelection within the gmail context(that is a body element that is set to contenteditable and embedded inside an iframe in the gmail tab) to get the current range and position. The selection is always empty and contains no ranges regardless of whether text is selected or not.

There is a possibility of installing a .NET application that queries the same DB that the VB6 application queries, which is an SQL Server 2000 DB. The VB6 application also depends on third-party ActiveX controls (registered .ocx files). The concern is - will the .NET Framework installation replace any files or break the VB6 runtime in any way. In other words, can we safely assume that an installation of the .NET Framework is completely independent of any previous VB6 installations and will not interfere with the running application?

  Hi, I need to send HTML emails directly from oracle PL/SQL package. This works almost fine. I have problem with the fact that some of the data fetched from a table contain things like <S>, <L>, and similar fragments, which sometimes ar treated as HTML tags, and even if not, they are always ignored and never displayed. So, I need to escape this column before inserting into email body. Is there a function to escape html special chars into entities automaticly? Or do I need to replace('<','&lt;',string) manually all the special characters? I found a function to escape URLs but not one for HTML :( Best regards, SWilk

  Hi experts, Currently we are studying the java based tool which is primararily Reporting tool.It was developed in 2000/2001 period and uses many open source libraries like Apache Avalon/Mx4J.Adaptor/edu.Oswego(java concurrent package) etc. Tool uses jdk 1.3.1 and goal is to upgrade to jdk 1.5.We have also been asked to remove these 'outdated' packages and replace by standard java packages if possible. Unfortunately we have the code available for study but lacks any documentation and really difficult to track the flow(Total number of classes written might be more than 1000) during debugging.   I'm a newbie with SQL... Now I want to do display some instances of AddrDistances from DevExpress CxGrid with SQL. Select Cast((DistanceAsMeters * 0.001) as Decimal(8,1)) DistanceAsKm, bold_id, created, fromAddress, toAddress From AddrDistance Where DistanceAsMeters = 0 and PseudoDistanceAsCostKm = 0 and not AddrDistance.bold_id in (select bold_id from DistanceQueryTask) Order By Created Desc This SQL is working and the result is: DistanceAsKM Bold_ID Created FromAddress ToAddress 0 134808 16.02.2010 121795 134570 0 121701 10.03.2010 120850 122991 The result I want is this: DistanceAsKM Bold_ID Created FromAddress ToAddress 0 134808 16.02.2010 Kalmar Stockholm 0 121701 10.03.2010 Falkenberg Oslo So the amount of rows is right but I want to replace the numbers in FromAddress and ToAddress with strings from another table. The numbers shows here is just the boldid. Every object in the database have an unique boldid. The addresses above is stored in table Address and it have a City field with the column and a boldid as a key. What should I write in SQL to get this right ? Is there something in the CxGrid that could help here ? Regards

• How to achieve table like rows within container using CSS

  I'm helping an artist maintain her website and have inherited some pretty outdated code. Have moved lots of redundant common code to include files and am now working on moving from inline styles to more CSS-driven styles. For the gallery pages, e.g. http://artistsatlaketahoe.com/abstract.html, a lot of inline styling is used to force the current layout. My preference would be to replace this entirely with CSS that presents the following table-like layout within the "content" div: [image] [image descriptives and purchase button] [image] [image descriptives and purchase button] [image] [image descriptives and purchase button] I'd like to middle-align the image descriptives & purchase button relative to the image if possible. And then apply some padding above and below each row to stop using tags for vertical spacing. Any ideas how to create a div that I can use to get this kind of layout? Thanks!

• Are multiline tooltips possible using CWnd::EnableTooltips()?

  I'm attempting to make my tooltips multiline, but I don't seem to be having much luck with it. I call CWnd::EnableTooltips() directly after creation (in this case, an edit box) and I handle the TTN_NEEDTEXT message. My tooltips display correctly, but only display as a single line. I've tried adding '\n' to the string I pass when handling TTN_NEEDTEXT, and also tried '\r\n'. No luck. It just displays them as normal text in the tooltip string. I then tried manually inserting 0x0D0A, but this just displays as boxes. I've been digging a bit, and have found a few offhand references on the web saying that multiline behavior may not work when using tooltips through the CWnd functions. I'd prefer not to have to replace with CToolTipCtrl (since it's a rather large project). Has anyone ran into this before? If so, is there any way around it?
