• Unable to access any ubuntu shares from android/windows clients

  I am running Ubuntu 11.04, and cant seem to access any of my shares. • Why does running this program on 11.10 give a 'GLIBC_2.15 not found' error?

  I am trying to install Absinthe 2.0.4 on Ubuntu 11.10 on a netbook. When I try to run the install file, this keeps on happening: rafael@RafLaptop:~/Desktop/absinthe-linux-2.0.4$ ./absinthe.x86 ./absinthe.x86: /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.15' not found (required by ./absinthe.x86) Do I need to upgrade GLIBC? If so, how do I do that? Since I'm on a netbook I can't use a LiveCD so I wanted to know if there was a way I could fix this issue without reinstalling my whole OS. Any explanations about what GLIBC is exactly would be great too since this is a learning experience for me. I know that GLIBC is a part of libc.so.6 and so I tried to run sudo apt-get install libc.so.6 but was told that it was up to date. But GLIBC isn't? I hope this articulates my problem well, if there are any pieces of missing info or questions to clarity my question, please let me know! ~-~ EDIT/UPDATE: So after some help on the AskUbuntu chat room from user izx, I have gathered the following information/understanding: -I need to run this program with Ubuntu 12.04 or recompile it from source -Upgrading libc on Oneiric to 2.15 while possible, is not an easy task and is not officially supported.

• Advice on developing a social network [on hold]

  I am doing research on assembling a team, using the right tools, and the cost to develop a highly responsive social network that is capable of dealing with a lot of users. Similar to the Facebook concept but using the basics package for now. Profile, friends, posts, updates, media upload/download, streaming, chat and Inbox messaging are all in the package. We certainly do not expect it to be as popular as Facebook or handle the same number of users and requests, but in its own game it has to be a monster, and expandable for later on. Neglecting the hosting, and servers part, i am looking for technical advise and opinions, on what kind of team i need ? how many developers ? their expertise ? What are the right tools ? languages ? frameworks ? environments ? Any random ideas about the infrastructure ? Quick thoughts on the development process ? Please use references, if you have any to support your ideas. Development cost mere estimation ? NEGLECTING THE COST OF SERVERS I know my question is too broad but my knowledge is very limited and i need detailed help, for any help you can offer i thank you in advance.

• What are the requirements to test a website using jquery.get() ? [migrated]

  I am working on a simple website. It has to search quite a few text files in different sub-folders. The rest of the page uses jquery, so I would like to use it for this also. The function I am looking at is .get() for downloading the files. So my main question is, can I test this on my local computer (Ubuntu Linux) or do I have to have it uploaded to a server? Also, if there's a better way to go about this, that would be nice to know. However, I'm more worried about getting it working. • Open Source Software Development Center at University of Belgrade

  A new Open Source Software Development Center is open at University of Belgrade, Serbia. It centers around using Java & NetBeans as open source projects to learn from and contribute to. Assistant Professor Zoran Sevarac says that not only does the center allow him to teach software development using open source projects, but also "we are improving our University courses based on the experience we get from working on open source code."  Some of the projects underway are a NetBeans UML plugin; Neuroph (a Java neural network framework, with a NetBeans Platform-based UI); a NetBeans DOAP Plugin; WorkieTalkie (NetBeans chat plugin); and 2D and 3D visualization plugins for NetBeans. University of Belgrade also has an official university course about open source development, where students learn to use development tools, work in teams, participate in open source projects and learn from real world software development projects. Students, teachers, and researchers at the University of Belgrade, and any member of the open source community are welcome to come to learn software development from successful open source projects. • Live programming help

  This idea has been floating around my head for a few years. I started some work on it but I just want to know if it is feasible, sensible, or if there is something else like it out there. Dont want to know I was wasting time on a solved issue. Whenever I have a programming issue, this is my sequence: Google it!: That usually brings up a lot of things: blogs, forums, stackoverflow, stackexchange, and even the official docs of the language/framework/cms. Ask on IRC: I format my question and try to get people on IRC to help me. Make a post: I create a post on forums/stackoverflow/stackexchange or shout on twitter with hashtags. Now a lot of the time I am in the middle of a project with a deadline. So I want answers NOW!!! Sometimes just 5-15 minutes worth of attention. Usually by the time I am failing at getting answers at #2, I am imagining how many people are ONLINE NOW with the skill and my exact answer but playing video games, watching youtube or idling online. However, if they were motivated, they would invest the 15 mintes helping me, that would make a world of a difference. I am even in positions where I would PAY for that 15 minutes of instant help. If your rate is as much as $100/hour (relatively good programmer) that is $25 that might save me 3 hours. This help would be live, text chat/skype/phone/screenshare. Should I continue developing this idea or is there a better alternative out there? Or is this even an unfeasible idea?

• Taking our Friendships to the next level.

  Red Gate have been running the Friends of Red Gate program for years now, and over that time we've built some great relationships with some truly awesome members of the SQL and .NET communities. When I took over the running of the program from Annabel in 2011, I was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and commitment of our Friends. There were just so many of them, however, that it was hard to make the most of the relationships we had with people, and I wanted to fix that. I decided to survey all our Friends, to find out what they wanted to get out of, and put into, being in the Friends of Red Gate (FoRG) program. From the results of that survey, I identified 30 FoRGs that were really willing and able to go that step further to help Red Gate improve their tools, improve their relationship with the community, and improve the Friends of Red Gate program. Those 30 Friends of Red Gate have been awarded 'FoRG+' status. That means they'll: Have a closer relationship with the product teams, by getting involved in projects Have even more access to the inside track about the tools they're interested in Get the opportunity to come visit us at the Red Gate office and really influence the development of the tools. Plus more, depending on how the individual FoRG+ wants to work with us. This doesn't mean I've forgotten our other Friends; I'm working on ways to improve their experience of the Friends of Red Gate program. I'll write about them in another post. • What is the target of Unity?

  First Unity was developed for Netbooks. But the Netbook Market is shrinking. Unity is not specialized for tablet pcs like Android 3, but it may work well with some specialized Apps for those devices. Unity is still nice for Notebooks with small displays, but there is no big advantage on the desktop compared with other desktop environments like Gnome 2/3 or KDE. So what's the point? My first suggenstion was a hybrid between tablet pc and a desktop, for example for a manager. He can plug the tablet in a docking station in his office and he can work at a normal desktop, whats not possible with iOS or Android. If he is in a meeting he can use it as a tablet to make notes, for example. Or if he is somewhere else outside the office or the company. Same for normal users. They can dock the tablet and use it like a normal desktop pc or they can lie on the couch and browse in the web, read a book or chat with friend. So, thats my suggestion. But what is the real plan for Unity or Ubuntu in general? I'm curious ;)

• How do I mount a CIFS share via FSTAB and give full RW to Guest

  I want to create a Public folder that has full RW access. The problem with my configuration is that Windows users have no issues as guests (they can RW and Delete), my Ubuntu client can't do the same. We can only write and read, but not create or delete. I just noticed that if I copy a file to the share after mounting, my Ubuntu client immediately make "nobody" be the owner, and the group "no group" has read and write, with everyone else as read-only. What am I doing wrong?

• Loadbalancing Questions

  I have been learning networking for about 4 months. Wrote a single standalone Multiplayer server and succeeded with authoritative approach. Now I want to extend it by splitting the single server into clusters to allow even more players to log in to avoid latency issues. Now I have protyped the Loadbalancing server and its running pretty good so far. This is my architecture, I have a master server which acts as a proxy, every sub servers(chat, login, game) connect to the master server as well as all the clients. when a client connects, Client Request: Send Request - MS(Master) - Decides which SS(SubServer) to forward to - Forwards Request to SS - SS - Analyze Message - Send Response to MS - Decides which Client to forward to - Forwards Response to Client Well, it looks like its going through lots of stages. it takes double the time to process the message than a single server approach. i feel like my model isnt the best or i may be wrong. is there any better model or the one they use in professional games? I still want a Master-SubServer approach. I just want to clarify that I'm going in the right direction before writing all my codes. Thanks for any answer :)

  I setup a samba server on 12.04 LTS, and it works great for one user but not the others. I am trying to map a network drive from a windows 7 laptop. I can successfully authenticate with one user, but the other two both get "Access is denied" errors. Here is my smb.conf file. I changed all the users so they are all members of the same groups (all three users are admins anyway). I only ever have one user connected at a time. Here are the permissions on the shared folder /srv$ ls -l drwxrwxrwx 1 nobody nogroup 16 Feb 22 17:05 share Any ideas?

• Kickstarter and 2D smartphone games

  I am about to launch a Kickstarter project as, after 14 months of full time development on my first iOS game, I run out of money. I developed an iOS game that needs few more months to be ready (the game structure is there but haven't yet worked on balancing the difficulty of the various levels). I have a feeling that most of the computer games founded on Kickstarter are for console, PC or Mac and not for smartphones. The category that many people seem to like is RPG style games. I have done tons of work over a year and collaborated with musicians and illustrators to get top quality graphics and music. The game looks cool to be an iOS 2D game but, compared to what I've seen on Kickstarter, I feel so little and humbled. I have searched for smartphone game projects on Kickstarter but haven't found many. I believe that the reason is that people are not keen in backing an APP that is normally sold for 0.99$ as they perceive is not something big. Am I the only one having this feeling? Could anyone please share a list of references to some successfully backed kickstarter smartphone game projects? (In this way the question will not become a "chat" and will fulfill the requirements to be a gamedev question). Any other article or authoritative answer will be welcome.

• Samba issue with sharing directories on NTFS/FAT32 (Mounted Drives) ???

  Hi guys, I have some strange problems with Samba server. I am using samba Version 3.5.4 on Ubuntu 10.10. I have two windows-xp machines, one on VirtualBox on Ubuntu and another office laptop. Windows machine on VBox has no issues in accessing the shared folders, but the laptop is not able to access all the shared content. The issue faced on laptop is = Shared folders on Ext3 drives have no issues in accessing, but the contents shared on NTFS and FAT32 drives (mounted ones) are not accessible. When I try to open the shared folder, it asks for user name and password, but doesn't accept when I provide it. (even if I provide admin login details!!!). I changed workgroup value to the domain_name in office laptop, but still the problem persists... Here is the smdb.conf I am using... • Recent 12.04 Upgrade Makes My System and Internet Run Extremely SLOW!

  I'm running a Dell Inspiron 1564 with Windows7/Ubuntu dual booting. I haven't logged into the Ubuntu OS partition for some time until recently (trying to force myself into a Linux environment to learn) and when I did, It asked me to upgrade to 12.04 and so I did, restarted and since, everything seems to run extremely slow (startup, opening applications, running applications, switching windows, etc., etc... Another thing is that the Internet cuts out intermittently on my browser. Some pages within my Firefox tabs I can access, some I cant. Almost always while running Skype or some other Internet using application. So I know that I'm getting Internet, I can chat with friends over Skype but certain pages wont load during my Skype calls; the pages just hang upon resfreshing... I can eventually get the page to load after an indefinite amount of waiting and refreshing but this is very annoying. I am extremely new to Linux so I apologize in advance for my absolute ignorance. I am willing to post whatever information you Linux gurus have me type into the terminal in hopes that you can help me =) Thanks in advance!

Of course! I really enjoy those free MVA jump starts - live and later the recordings. Actually, I prefer the live ones because you really have a chance to communicate with the MVA studio team and the experts in the chat. Luckily, the live stream is provided in two quality levels and with the remote situation of Mauritius, I always have to switch to 'Standard Quality' to avoid too much buffering and to enjoy a smooth experience. Later on, the recordings are great for rehearsal and repetition of the material. You can download and watch them offline while commuting, or what I'm going to do in the future - to use them as material for a study group within the Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community (MSCC). For sure, this is going to be a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to work with other Windows-oriented software craftsmen in order to 'push' them towards Microsoft certifications. • Ubuntu won't log in after update

  I just updated Ubuntu about 15 minutes ago on my desktop which is running 12.04. Within the set of updates, there were some kernel upgrades. It didn't say I needed to reboot after the update was finished, but I thought I would anyway. The computer successfully rebooted up to the login screen. However, after entering my password, the screen goes black for a moment, then it comes back to the login screen. I tried the suggestions in this question, but unfortunately they didn't help. In the accepted answer, the questioner vaguely says it was a "Unity problem". I'm using Gnome-classic with full Compiz effects. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Compiz, but that didn't fix anything. So... I can't use my desktop computer until this is fixed. I hope there is some help soon. I've uploaded the output of cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log to Pastebin. A temporary solution of changing to gdm instead of lightdm was found with help in the chat room.
