  If this question has been asked then I applogize and I will join in voting to close it (or just delete it), but I could not find it being asked before. We are potentially embarking on making many of our apps using WPF. Most of our apps are normal business apps that will not need too much eye candy. Tasteful ui is nice, but I don't see us doing lost of custom animations and such. So, my question is what 3rd party control sets are the best ones to purchase to save you time in development of apps like this? (These should work with both Visual Studio 2008 and 2010.)

  Take a simple table like below: Column Headings: || Agent's Name || Time Logged In || Center || Row 1: Andrew || 12:30 PM || Home Base Row 2: Jeff || 7:00 AM || Virtual Base Row 3: Ryan || 6:30 PM || Test Base Now lets say that a single cell is deleted so the table now looks like this: Column Headings: || Agent's Name || Time Logged In || Center || Row 1: Andrew || 12:30 PM || Row 2: Jeff || 7:00 AM || Virtual Base Row 3: Ryan || 6:30 PM || Test Base Notice that "Home Base" is missing. Now in excel you can delete the cell and shift the rest so the finished product looks like below: Column Headings: || Agent's Name || Time Logged In || Center || Row 1: Andrew || 12:30 PM || Virtual Base Row 2: Jeff || 7:00 AM || Test Base Row 3: Ryan || 6:30 PM || And you can see we are left with a blank cell last row. • How to update correctly an Entity Model after changes of database structure?

  I've made some changes in the table structure and especially the relationships between tables in my SQL Server database. Now I want to update my Entity model based on this new database structure. Right clicking on the edmx file I find the option "Update model from database". But when I do this I get kind of a 50% update: The new columns appear in the Entity classes but I am confused about a lot of navigation properties which are still there in the model although the corresponding foreign key relationships do not exist anymore in the database. Am I doing something wrong? Or is there another option to update the model including deletion of navigation properties? Or do I have to delete those navigation properties manually in the model files? I am using Entity Framework Version 1 (VS 2008 SP1). Thanks for help in advance!

• Josh Smith's MVVM Demo App: Add commands to MainWindowViewModel's command list

  I have a question concerning Josh Smith's famous demo app on MVVM. I try building a "real" application around it to learn WPF. He creates this CommandsList in the MainWindowViewModel containing 2 Commands (create new and view all customers). This list is readonly (why? any particular reason?). I thougt it would be nice to add and remove some commands, depending on the workspace that is currently selected. Like edit or delete a customer when it has the focus and so on. How would I accomplish this?! Can I just make it a normal list and add commands? Or bind the Commands-View to a commands list of the selected workspace instead of the MainWindow? How? Any other ways? File is expected at location: " + AppDomain.CurrentDomain.SetupInformation.ConfigurationFile + "\n"); } When I build the app.config file in my solution is added to the output directory as AppName.exe.config, and if run from outside visual studio AppDomain.CurrentDomain.SetupInformation.ConfigurationFile contains the path C:...\AppName.exe.config (from within VS it's C:..\AppName.vshost.exe.config). If I delete AppName.exe.config, the value is C:..\Appname.config (no .exe). I did a bit of farther experimentation, and if Appname.config exists that file will also work to load my setting values. What's going on here? I need to have everything consistent for error reporting purposes.

  I've been trying to add in-app email functionality and have been somewhat successful. The MailCompose view is displayed properly. But when "Cancel" is pressed the Action Sheet with "Delete", "Save as Draft" and "Cancel" animates in from the left as if the view controller is set to portrait mode*, yet the width (or height depending on how you look at it) is that of an action sheet in landscape mode as seen in the following image: http://dansandland.com/storage/screen-shot-2.png *The view controller is set to Landscape Left, both in the plist file and the shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation method of all view controllers. • UITableView issue when using separate delegate/dataSource

  General Description: To start with what works, I have a UITableView which has been placed onto an Xcode-generated view using Interface Builder. The view's File Owner is set to an Xcode-generated subclass of UIViewController. To this subclass I have added working implementations of numberOfSectionsInTableView: tableView:numberOfRowsInSection: and tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath: and the Table View's dataSource and delegate are connected to this class via the File Owner in Interface Builder. The above configuration works with no problems. The issue occurs when I want to move this Table View's dataSource and delegate implementations out to a separate class, most likely because there are other controls on the View besides the Table View and I'd like to move the Table View-related code out to its own class. To accomplish this, I try the following: Create a new subclass of UITableViewController in Xcode Move the known-good implementations of numberOfSectionsInTableView: tableView:numberOfRowsInSection: and tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath: to the new subclass Drag a Table View Controller to the top level of the existing XIB in InterfaceBuilder, delete the View/TableView that are automatically created for this Table View Controller, then set the Table View Controller's class to match the new subclass Remove the previously-working Table View's existing dataSource and delegate connections and connect them to the new Table View Controller When complete, I do not have a working Table View. I end up with one of three outcomes which can seemingly happen at random: When the Table View loads, I get a runtime error indicating I am sending tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath: to an object which does not recognize it When the Table View loads, the project breaks into the debugger without error There is no error, but the Table View does not appear With some debugging and having created a basic project just to reproduce this issue, I am usually seeing the 3rd option above (no error but no visible table view). I added some NSLog calls and found that although numberOfSectionsInTableView and numberOfRowsInSection are both getting called, cellForRowAtIndexPath is not. I am convinced I'm missing something really simple and was hoping the answer may be obvious to someone with more experience than I have. If this doesn't turn out to be an easy answer I would be happy to update with some code or a sample project. Thanks for your time! Complete steps to reproduce: Create a new iPhone OS, View-Based Application in Xcode and call it TableTest Open TableTestViewController.xib in Interface Builder and drag a Table View onto the provided view surface. Connect the Table View's dataSource and delegate outlets to File's Owner, which should already represent the TableTestViewController class. Save your changes Back in Xcode, add the following code to TableTestViewController.m: - (NSInteger)numberOfSectionsInTableView:(UITableView *)tableView { NSLog(@"Returning num sections"); return 1; } - (NSInteger)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView numberOfRowsInSection:(NSInteger)section { NSLog(@"Returning num rows"); return 1; } - (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { NSLog(@"Trying to return cell"); static NSString *CellIdentifier = @"Cell"; UITableViewCell *cell = [tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:CellIdentifier]; if (cell == nil) { cell = [[[UITableViewCell alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectZero reuseIdentifier:CellIdentifier] autorelease]; } cell.text = @"Hello"; NSLog(@"Returning cell"); return cell; } Build and Go, and you should see the word Hello appear in the TableView Now to attempt to move this TableView's logic out to a separate class, first create a new file in Xcode, choosing UITableViewController subclass and calling the class TableTestTableViewController Remove the above code snippet from TableTestViewController.m and place it into TableTestTableViewController.m, replacing the default implementation of these three methods with ours. Back in Interface Builder within the same TableTestViewController.xib file, drag a Table View Controller into the main IB window and delete the new Table View object that automatically came with it Set the class for this new Table View Controller to TableTestTableViewController Remove the dataSource and delegate bindings from the existing, previously-working Table View and reconnect the same two bindings to the new Table Test Table View Controller we created. Save changes, Build and Go, and if you're getting the results I'm getting, note the Table View no longer functions properly Solution: With some more troubleshooting and some assistance from the iPhone Developer Forums at https://devforums.apple.com/message/5453, I've documented a solution! The main UIViewController subclass of the project needs an outlet pointing to the UITableViewController instance. To accomplish this, simply add the following to the primary view's header (TableTestViewController.h): #import "TableTestTableViewController.h" and IBOutlet TableTestTableViewController *myTableViewController; Then, in Interface Builder, connect the new outlet from File's Owner to Table Test Table View Controller in the main IB window. No changes are necessary in the UI part of the XIB. Simply having this outlet in place, even though no user code directly uses it, resolves the problem completely. • Getting ANT to scp only new/changed files

  I would like to optimize my scp deployment which currently copies all files to only copy files that have changed since the last build. I believe it should be possible with the current setup somehow, but I don't know how to do this. I have the following: Project/src/blah/blah/ <---- files I am editing (mostly PHP in this case, some static assets) Project/build <------- I have a local build step that I use to copy the files to here I have an scp task right now that copies all of Project/build out to a remote server when I need it. Is it possible to somehow take advantage of this extra "build" directory to accomplish what I want -- meaning I only want to upload the "diff" between src/** and build/**. Is it possible to somehow retrieve this as a fileset in ANT and then scp that? I do realize that what it means is that if I somehow delete/mess around with files on the server in between, the ANT script would not notice, but for me this is okay.

• ASP.NET MVC & Silverlight development - on Ubuntu

  I recently moved my working environment from Windows 7 to Ubuntu, and enjoy this every minute of my working day. My work is currently to develop ASP.NET MVC and Silverlight applications. Thus, important Windows stuff is being still run in VirtualBox (such as IIS, MSSQL, Silverlight 3, and legacy COM stuff). For now, I use Visual Studio under VirtualBox as editor/IDE/debugger. But since I prefer Ubuntu fonts and UI much more I'd like to move at least editor (and better IDE) to native Ubuntu. Things I have already done: I store project files in my home folder and run Visual Studio from \vboxsvr share. With few tricks for ASP.NET it works. I use svn on Ubuntu. I test my ASP.NET MVC site using FireFox/FireBug on Ubuntu. What I need on Ubuntu: SQL client to manage MSSQL. I mostly need querying, but I would miss SQL intellisense support. I enjoy command-line svn a lot, but there're times when it's not enough (e.g. view files / check diffs / selectively commit at the sames time) so I wonder if there're any addons - I don't mean replacement for svn, just addons for rare cases like above. I wonder if there're editors that can provide some C# intellisense. Yes I know about MonoDevelop, but will it provide intellisense without compiling (since I'm going to compile remotely in Win box)? And pretty big topic, what's the best way (editor/IDE) to do "folder-based" development? What I mean: The project is /trunk. Everything is there. I don't want to manually add files to project or like that. The project is the folder and files down there. Main task is to edit files of course. I need a quick way to open / search for files in the project. Like in Resharper, I can click Ctrl-Shift-T (IIRC) and just type file name, a list of matching files in the project folder and below is shown. For example, gedit has file tree browser, but I can't quickly type XYZ to find all XYZ files there; moreover it doesn't automatically switch focus to/from editor; so it's more mouse-oriented; I need 100% keyboard way. I need syntax highlighting for C#/HTML/JS. Most importantly, I need HTML tags autocompletion. I can live without it, but I'll be sorry. I need to run compilation remotely (via ssh I think, invoking NAnt script which does MSBuild) and grab results such as errors and warnings, and I'd prefer to quickly go to error line/file. In short, I need to edit/search/open/svn/compile/run files in some folder. Looks like a case for command-line, but imaging I'm in /trunk and want to open file.cs inside /trunk/foo/bar/boo/far, I wouldn't want to type all this path even with bash autocompletion help. I'd prefer to enter :open file.cs, and maybe then select from list of file.cs and file1.cs. Well, maybe I'll add more soon. Actually, I don't have exact requirements; for example, I don't even know if I need to ask for IDE or editor; or should it have svn support integrated or I need to use it from console; do people work with files from console (search/commit/delete/etc) and open editor from there, or they work from editor/IDE and manage files (search/commit/delete) from there? What's better? I have a feeling that vim might have everything I need. I'd like to confirm that, before I spend a lot of time learning it. No I don't want Emacs. Any other IDE? I like Eclipse, but is it good for such stuff? And after all, do you feel like it's a good way to go? I enjoy Ubuntu, enjoy learning new stuff, and Ubuntu + Windows in VirtualBox actually runs faster than Windows7 on my mahcine, but maybe I need to keep development (editor/files management/etc) in Windows/VirtualBox only, leaving other stuff for Ubuntu?

• Ant Copy Task: Failed to copy due to java.io.FileNotFoundException

  I'm trying to compile a Flex application in Ant (no problems here, I can do it fine). When I try to publish the contents of the project to a Windows network drive (known as "Z:\" on my system), I get the following LAME exception thrown by Java/Ant: BUILD FAILED C:\workspace\bkeller\build.xml:42: Failed to copy C:\workspace\bkeller\web\assets\text\biography.html to Z:\web\bkeller\assets\text\biography.html due to java.io.FileNotFoundException Z:\web\bkeller\assets\text\biography.html (The system cannot find the file specified) Which kind of sucks. I can't find any way to get rid of this problem and it's pretty crucial to my project that I get this working. I know for sure that I have read/write/execute permissions on the network drive, I can create/edit/delete files on the drive just fine through Windows explorer. Drive Z is a network mount to virtualbox, allowing me to get access to my host OS, Ubuntu. I've double checked that it has write permissions. Any ideas?

  I'm unable to debug a WinForms C# application using the released version of Visual Studio 2010 Prof. I get the following error message after the second debugging run. Error 9 Unable to copy file "obj\x86\Debug\Arrowgrass Reports.exe" to "bin\Debug\Arrowgrass Reports.exe". The process cannot access the file 'bin\Debug\Arrowgrass Reports.exe' because it is being used by another process. I've tried a pre-build script to attempt to delete this file, but it's locked by Visual Studio. There are a few references to this on the net so it is a know problem. Does anyone have a hotfix or effective work-around?

• Can I prevent window.onbeforeunload from being called when doing an AJAX call

  I have an AJAX-based grid control. We hook into the window.onbeforeunload event to check if they have unsaved data and if so present them with a message "Are you sure you want to navigate away...you have unsaved data...". All this is good. But AJAX calls also trigger window.onbeforeunload and so if the grid has unsaved data and we make an AJAX call (such as to delete a row in another grid) the user gets the "Are you sure you want to navigate away...you have unsaved data..." message which is not good. Is it possible to suppress the onbeforeunload event for AJAX calls? Or is it possible to detect that a call is an AJAX call? Otherwise we'll have to get hacking! Thanks

  Hello. I am trying to push an app to heroku and I am getting the error detailed here. So I am trying to determine the corrupt objects using git fsck -full but it isn't returning anything. Nothing happens: Ryan@Ryan-PC ~ $ git fsck --full Ryan@Ryan-PC But I get the object error when I try to push the object to heroku. Is there anyway I can go about repairing the corrupt repository, or can I just delete it and start over? How do I go about doing this?

• Using truncate table alongside Hibernate?

  Is it OK to truncate tables while at the same time using Hibernate to insert data? We parse a big XML file with many relationships into Hibernate POJO's and persist to the DB. We are now planning on purging existing data at certain points in time by truncating the tables. Is this OK? It seems to work fine. We don't use Hibernate's second level cache. One thing I did notice, which is fine, is that when inserting we generate primary keys using Hibernate's @GeneratedValue where Hibernate just uses a key value one greater than the highest value in the table - and even though we are truncating the tables, Hibernate remembers the prior value and uses prior value + 1 as opposed to starting over at 1. This is fine, just unexpected. Note that the reason we do truncate as opposed to calling delete() on the Hibernate POJO's is for speed. We have gazillions of rows of data, and truncate is just so much faster.

  Hi. I am attempting to import a Certificate into the Current User - Personal store using the command line: "importpfx -f [certificate name.p12] -p [password] -t USER -s Personal". It works, but for reasons I don't understand there are now two Personal stores under the Current User, and the imported certificate is in the new Personal store. When I try to connect to the website of [a well-known money transfer service], it fails. However, if I manually import the certificate using MMC into the original Personal store, it works. My question is: How can I force IMPORTPFX to import the certificate into the original Personal store, and how can I delete the new Personal store? Context: I need to do a silent import of certificates on 3000+ remote point-of-sale Windows XP devices, so it needs to be a silent install via PSEXEC (SysInternals). Thank you. Pieter.

• List<T>.RemoveAll Doesn't Exist in Silverlight?

  I'm working on a Silverlight 2/3 application. I would like to use List.RemoveAll (or maybe it's IList.RemoveAll?) and specify a predicate so that I can remove a bunch of elements from a list in one sweep. It seems like this function doesn't exist in Silverlight, though. Am I missing something here? Is there an alternative approach that's equally easy? Right now, I'm manually iterating over my elements in a foreach and keeping a second list (because you can't delete while iterating), and it's quite ... cumbersome.

• Clean conflicting class files from Temporary ASP.NET Files

  Class file Conflicts in C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\ is preventing me from building the solution. Even though I try emptying out the folder, each time Visual Studio starts the build process, it brings in the class file in to the temp folder with the same folder name. If I restart the machine or leave it overnight, project build without error. Is there anyway to tell Visual studio to delete/ignore/clean any lingering class files that could be in the temp folder? Clean solution option in VS doesn't work either. Class file in conflict are from the App_Code folder.

  This discusses a repository which returns IList that also uses Linq to SQL as a DAL. Once you do a .ToList(), IQueryable object is gone once you exit the Repository. This means that I need to send the objects back in to the Repo methods .Create(Model model), .Update(Model model), and .Delete(int ID). Assuming that is correct, how do you do the PersistAll()? For example, if you did the following, how would you code that in the repository? Changed a single string property in the object Called .Update(object); Changed a different string property in the object Called .Update(object); Called .PersistAll(), which would update the database with both changed strings. How would you associate the objects in the Repository parameters with the objects in the Linq to Sql data context, especially over multiple calls? I am sure this is a standard thing.   I am trying to develop web parts in VS 2008/WinXP I created a Web Site project, and added a couple of web parts within the default form in default.aspx <form id="form1" runat="server"> <div> <asp:WebPartManager ID="WebPartManager1" runat="server"> </asp:WebPartManager> <asp:WebPartZone ID="WebPartZone1" runat="server"> </asp:WebPartZone> </div> </form> When I first ran it (in the debugger), a popup told to me enable Windows authentication in IIS (so something is working!). I enabled the Windows authentication, and now when I run it I get a blank screen. Same result if I open it in IE via the url (rather than debugger). I want to replace this line : <img width="600" height="256" alt="javascript00" src="http://localhost/img/test.png" title="javascript00" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1973"> With this : <p align="center"><img width="600" height="256" alt="javascript00" src="http://localhost/img/test.png" title="javascript00"></p> By use a simple regexp. • Unexpected result in .NET 4 DirectoryInfo.EnumerateFiles(string)

  It seems that the following code is not working as expected. I would assume that the following call to EnumarateFiles would only return files that match the filename pattern of c* ... however, filenames with H* are still getting returned. For example... the following file will get deleted in the following code (HNNN09060900932.xml). What's the issue?
