  • quick prototyping in project design & development

    i'm currently working on a project in my spare time (mostly 3-4 hours from monday to friday, and up to 6 hours on sundays) and i've found redmine very useful to hold a record of development tasks. However, there are some stuff, specially when you are trying to prototype or brainstorm a redesign of a set of related classes, that the best tool that i've found for this still is a sheet of paper and a pen. I want to understand if maybe i'm just short of getting to work properly with existing tools. Do you find the use of a notebook or a journal an unavoidable part of software design? are there better alternatives? how do you organize pen-and-paper work and other software management tools like redmine?

  • Scrum Board for a distributed team

    I am looking for recommendations on a digital Scrum Board which can be shared over the internet. I imagine something like a big tablet on which you can draw and which remote users can access, too. I dislike Scrum software because I think one major benefit of a Scrum Board is its physical presence. It should be hard to ignore. The best solution would be two big tablets on which you can draw and which can be synchronized. Has anyone got product recommendations for something like this? Or would you rather use a software?   • Rationale behind freeware projects

    I've seen some freeware projects in the past where the author(s) invested a significant amount of their personal time and resources and never even considered charging for the software. A lot of these projects were donation based, and from what I've heard, donationware can never be a viable business model (even to simply support development costs) because most people choose not to donate if given an option. A lot of these projects eventually shut down because their authors could not sustain them further. Granted, some people simply like making the community happy (or something), but if you're struggling to keep your project alive, why not charge some small amount such as $10 simply to stay operational? If people find your software useful (and a lot of people found those projects VERY useful) they won't have a problem paying such a small amount. The question is: if you have a popular app that people like and download in great numbers, why not put a price tag on it? Why do it for free?

    Model: Canon Prixma MG2260 I have installed to ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr. Now I have the problem by my multi function device. The printer works, but the scanner doesn't! I have downloaded the Linux software of Canon for the 2200 series. I have downloaded the software of the Internet site of Canon. 6 Zip folder 3 deb. and 3 rpm. Always 1 for computer, 1 for scanner, 1 for other Thinks. I can load them on my PC and unpacking, but they do not install themselves. Does any person know what I have to do about this?

  • ISTQB terminology question (Defect)

    According to ISTQB (and few more sources + wiki ), a defect/bug is the actual cause of error in software, e.g. incorrect statement, logical or semantic error. The actual definion is: a flaw in the system or component that could lead to the failure. But what about specification bugs? I cannot relate to it. Specification bugs are quite common but if the programmer implements software according to spec with a bug, it is not his fault (IMHO). But then the definion could not apply and I am sure it must have been addressed somehow. Could you help me to understand this?

  • How do I pitch ASP.NET over PHP to a potential client?

    I work at a Microsoft shop doing mainly web development. We had a client who asked us to review (improve) the data model for his web app, but said that he wants to develop his app in PHP (he knows "a guy" who can do it). When I asked him why he wants to go with PHP, he gave me the standard set of arguments from the 90's: Microsoft is evil, and PHP is free Writing an ASP.NET app is more expensive (software-wise) Why would Facebook use PHP if it was a bad idea? [classic] He had a few more comments about the costs associated with going .NET. The truth is that "Microsoft is expensive" does not hold water any longer, with their "Express" suite, you can develop an ASP.NET app without paying anything for software. When it comes to hosting, you can save a few bucks with PHP over .NET, but that's a small fraction of the projected development costs (we quoted 10-15k). Going back to my question, what arguments would I give to a client in favor of ASP.NET over PHP? [please provide sources for quantitative claims]

  • Approaching SICP in Clojure instead of Scheme

    I am a third year bachelor student in a software engineering program, and I brought up the idea of reading SICP to an adviser to gain a deeper and more fundamental understanding of the principles behind all this software we engineer. He suggested not to learn Scheme to complete the book (because it's not as common as modern dialects of Lisp) but to do the exercises in Clojure instead. It's an already difficult book, if I do attempt the book's exercises in the more modern Clojure, how would that work? For example, I can't find any real solutions, the syntax they teach for Scheme is different, etc.

  • How can I remove a Unity window entry?

    I installed Eclipse long time ago from the Software Center, but recently I needed a newer version than the repo one. Then I removed it via Software Center and installed Eclipse Kepler in /opt. However, the window opened is not called Eclipse, it is the name of an old program I made (Eclipse- GMM). However, that's not the main issue, but that even if I created a .desktop file it launches the same, having "two" eclipses in the dock, the actual program and the launcher. How can I remove Unity .desktop cache or wathever it is this?

  • Does approaching SICP in clojure have a high chance of success? [on hold]

I'm really not knowledgeable enough about either clojure or scheme to make an argument about this, so I wanted to know if I should bring it up or not.

  • How seriously would an employer take a job application from an applicant studying at the Open University [closed]

    I ask the question because I am considering applying to a traditional bricks and mortar university to do mathematics, computer science or software engineering. However I am in my late twenties and have a young family so I am seriously considering going down the Open University route and working in the software development industry at the same time. If I do attend Open University, I will definitely study Mathematics. I fell in love with PHP and the common web technologies a few years back and it has slowly progressed into learning C++, Java and also Python. If I spent the next year increasing my knowledge of those languages whilst studying at the Open University, would an employee consider a self taught programmer who is 20% of the way through a Bsc in Mathematics?

  • Crappy school, what to do? [closed]

    I started programming fairly late. I am 24 years old and about to graduate from a local public university with a really poorly designed curriculum and teachers. Most of the work felt like busy work, and no matter how much I try, it all feels like a waste. I know what a good curriculum looks like. I know what books I should read, but alas it's not so in my university. There is no way at this point that I can catch up to those graduating from places like MIT. My question and this is a serious one: what do I do? Do I just postpone learning the theory I would have learned until later and focus on software engineering skills? How important is the theory in terms of landing a job in New York? Any particular things I should focus on to land a software engineer job? I am very motivated and I just wish someone would give me the time and a chance.

  • How should I practice web server administration?

    Security students can practice their skills with software like OWASP's webgoat or something similar to "hackthissite". Students interested in Operating Systems can study MINIX and PintOS, write shell scripts or study POSIX system calls. What would be the best course of action in order to practice Server Administration? Is there any such software/resource available, teaching you such skills with small lessons, or it is totally up to you? I've practiced live FreeBSD server administration and management of VMs (CentOS, Gentoo, Debian) under VirtualBox, but I always feel that this isn't enough and I must push myself harder. So, what would you recommend? What has worked for you?

  • What kinds of projects is SCRUM considered to be suitable for?

    Is SCRUM considered by its proponents a general-purpose software development methodology or is it considered especially suited for certain categories of projects or application areas? For example, I recently looked at the website of a company producing software for the aerospatial industry and noticed that they are using the V-model. Would a SCRUM proponent say that SCRUM is not suited for this kind of projects or rather suggest that this company should try switching to SCRUM? Notice that I am not asking for the opinion of the readers of this forum, but I want to know what is the established opinion among SCRUM proposers: is SCRUM considered general-purpose or rather suitable for certain classes of projects only? In the latter cases, for what kinds of projects?

    E-Business Suite 11.5.10 Sustaining Support Exception & 12.1 Extended Support Now to Dec. 2018 [ID 1495337.1] As part of Oracle’s continued commitment to our customers, we will be providing an exception for the first 13 months of Sustaining Support on Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11.5.10 (11i10), valid from December 1, 2013 – December 31, 2014. This exception support will be comprised of three components: (1) new fixes for Severity 1 production issues, (2) United States Form 1099 2013 year-end updates, and (3) payroll regulatory updates for the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia for fiscal years ending in 2014.  In addition, the Extended Support period for E-Business Suite Release 12.1 has been extended through December, 2018.   • Installed 7zip. Not working. And when removing, it says to remove Fileroller as well

    I installed 7zip today from software centre but it won't showed up in launch bar (side bar). I did a lot but failed to open 7zip "window" from any where. I clicked it in dash but then I was sent to software center showing that it is installed. I just don't know how to start it. Nor it is showing in right-click menu. I actually wanted to open flareget which is in .tar.gz. Ubuntu's default archive opener isn't opening it and showing me this: And if I try to remove 7zip, it's saying file-roller should also be removed: What's going on and what's solution?

  • Brocken package manager due to incorrect Banshee package

    Sup, so, I'm not familiar with linux at all so help is much appreciated. I've been trying to boot my pc up from a live CD unsuccessfully. I get to the stage at which there are the options to test without installing or install or so on where I select 'Install Ubuntu.' Here it relays through some fast DOS commands until it reaches 'end trace' and then, eventually, 'Killed.' I have already got a functional 11.10 version installed, could this be a problem? The reason I am attempting a reinstall is because the package system is damaged inside 11.10, a problem I can't seem to solve. If I try to install any new software from within the software centre it tells me that two banshee extensions must be removed. I try to remove these from inside the terminal, using apt-get remove, which results in:** You might want to run apt-get -f install to correct these: The following packages have unmet dependencies. banshee-extension-ubuntuonemusicstore : Depends: banshee (>= 2.2.1) but 2.2.0-1ubuntu2 is to be installed E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution). The software centre suggests that I disable all third party repositories and run apt-get install -f I have done so but the package system remains damaged and apt-get install -fattempts to install banshee 2.2.1 but returns: Errors were encountered while processing: /var/cache/apt/archives/banshee_2.2.1-1ubuntu3_i386.deb E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) I have also tried apt-get update (runs fine) and apt-get upgrade.
