  I am having a hard time deciding what drink to drink after I have read a nonsense question on programmers.stackexchange. It's either Beer och Whisky; The beer is nice since you can down it some what relaxed but some times I feel the need for something "stronger" because the question is so utterly nonsense and stupid. Every time I have read a stupid / nonsense question on programmers.stackexchange.com I've questioned myself why I didnt write some code instead. I couldve probably written countless lines of codes, together probably building a new Facebook or Linux by now. But instead I sacrificed my precious time reading questions that shouldn't have been posted on the internet. It really makes me frustrating, I guess that is why I am so often considering the whisky part instead of beer. Since beer will maybe not calm me down enough and then I have to take the whisky too, together it's a) slightly more expensive and b) more time consuming. So, what is the best drink?

  I am creating a module in my website which displays ringtones. it is like creating blog posts and categories It will have categories(tags) and posts. (i am using category and tag interchangeably) i am using the following linking for this module sitename.com/blog sitename.com/blog/category/category-name-slug/ - will list all ringtones of that category/tag sitename.com/blog/title/name-slug-of-the-ringtone/ - this will display the details and a download link in all page at the left i display the category/tag . This is how i have formed the url structure. it will be user friendly i hope yet will it be seo friendly?   I'm in the planning phase of creating an action-rpg for the PC, and I'd like to create a League of Legends style look for the game (animated/cartoony). Any idea which engine best replicates this look? I ask because when I look at a lot of the UDk/Unreal games, they've all got the more realistic 3-D look that I'd like to avoid, so I was wondering if an alternate look was possible on that type of engine.   Have you noticed that a disproportionate amount of popular software products comes from the USA ? Examples: iOS, OS X, Phosothop, Oracle, Windows, Final Cut Pro, MS Office, iTunes, iWorks Suite, iLife Suite, AutoCad, Aperture, Google search engine, Twitter and endless stream of software that are the best in their fields and that are the models the rest of the industry want to emulate. Few people would deny that the most popular software comes from American companies. Obviously there's plenty of good software coming from outside the US, like Linux or SAP but most great looking, killer software comes from USA. Maybe these companies outsource the code elsewhere but the inception and design is mostly done in the USA. Why is that? and, can it be replicated elsewhere given the correct "ingredients" ?

• What would be the best way to get Apple to donate their JVM-work to OpenJDK?

  It has been announced that Apple deprecates their JVM. It is a really nice piece of work giving an excellent user experience for Swing application on OS X, and it would be a pity if it just went away. As I see it the only realistic long term alternative to Apples own JVM is the OpenJDK unless Oracle chooses to take over the Apple JVM which I doubt as OS X is not a core platform for Oracle. But for this to work Apple needs to donate their enhancements to OpenJDK, and it needs to be under the GPL. They did so already with WebKit so there is precedent. What would be the best way to make them do so? Make a stackexchange poll? Get James Gosling and other high profile Java persons to say so? Email Steve Jobs? Suggestions? EDIT: Well, Apple has now promised to do so :) Shows that asking on StackExchange really MAKES A DIFFERENCE! Great!

  I have searched and could not find any information about it. What is the best approach to storing revisions? I have a website where the user can write a document which can be fairly long (200-300 lines). How do you determine when to make a revision? Is it not a scalable solution to make a new one whenever the save, because that would be useless to the user when the want to look back, and it would require quite a lot of space. You could use time and say for every 15 minute they are working on it there would be a revision, but that would sometimes be nothing or the whole document have completely changed. I could make a diff from the previous revision, and compare by line and look at how many percent of the lines have been changed. What are other doing revisions?

  Doing R&D work, I often find myself writing programs that have some large degree of randomness in their behavior. For example, when I work in Genetic Programming, I often write programs that generate and execute arbitrary random source code. A problem with testing such code is that bugs are often intermittent and can be very hard to reproduce. This goes beyond just setting a random seed to the same value and starting execution over. For instance, code might read a message from the kernal ring buffer, and then make conditional jumps on the message contents. Naturally, the ring buffer's state will have changed when one later attempts to reproduce the issue. Even though this behavior is a feature it can trigger other code in unexpected ways, and thus often reveals bugs that unit tests (or human testers) don't find. Are there established best practices for testing systems of this sort? If so, some references would be very helpful. If not, any other suggestions are welcome!

  I'm trying to build a formatted text editor in python. I need the editor to be paginated on edit mode. Same as in all popular word processors - when the user is editing the document what he/she sees is a representation of the actual, physical, page. I've tried looking into PySide but I can't find any ready solution to this, nor I can work out a way to do it myself. I am totally open to new technologies, so if you think Python is not the right choice here I would love to hear about new stuff (especially when I'm this new to UI coding). It only needs to be cross-platform and let me do rapid development (hence me looking for an out-of-the-box solution to this). Please suggest the best way to implement this.   Not sure if this is the best place to ask, but I can't seem to find any of the other SE sites that would fit better (unless there's a law one?) I'm building an application that will replace an existing paper based form, and this form would normally be signed by the person filling it in. Looking around, it's hard to find a good definitive resource to explain what I can and cannot accept as far as a signature goes. It looks like some UK government online forms accept just your name typed into a box, but I've also heard you should back up with an email - so that process would be type name into a box along with providing an email address, send out an email, then make them click a link within the email to finally complete the verification. Involving email seems very long winded and leaves the system open to spam filters blocking emails, forgotten emails that just sit in inbox's etc. So, does anyone have any knowledge in this department? Personally, I'd love to just get them to type their name into a box and be done with it!

  The situation is that a client requested a number of changes about 9 months ago which they then put on hold with them half done. They've now requested more changes without having made up their mind to proceed with the first set of changes. The two sets of changes will require alterations to the same code modules. I've been tasked with explaining why them not making a decision about the first set of changes (either finish them or bin them) may incur additional costs (essentially because the changes would need to be made to a branch then if they proceed with the first set of changes we'd have to merge them to the trunk - which will be messy - and retest them).
