• What is the Best Way to Incentivize a Team of Developers?

  I know in advance that people are going to see this question and think "free Red Bull." But I am actually looking for the best way to tie rewards for developers to the company's long-term goals. For example, assuming a team is working on the same software product, would it be best to reward each developer based on the condition of the final product? They are a team after all, and this will ensure that they are all working towards the common goal of getting the product out. However, this ignores the fact that some developers are stronger than others and some work harder than others. In your experience, what is the best way to incentivize a team of developers?

• Alternatives to voxel-based terrain

  Are there any alternatives to voxel based terrains? Such terrain should be fully destructable, allow for arches, overhangs, preserve sharp features where needed and keep consistent topology. Maybe you can explain the problem that makes you ask this question? Voxel based terrain is basically just using a 3D grid of data to store data. There are lots of ways to render that data, but it doesn't get much simpler for storing it. – Byte56 Current isosurface extraction methods aren't most effective/bug-free. Cubical Marching Squares seem to solve most of the issues, however it is a relatively new method and there aren't too many resources about it. (I've found single university paper) Even if we stick to CMS, when we want to add multi-material support, we can either divide surface into multiple meshes, or pass a texture array or texture atlas to shaders, then we are limited to set amount of textures and additionally increase memory-usage alot.

  For RenderToTexture/Camera based portal rendering, the basics seems simple enough. However, with a free camera, most of the time it is going to be looking at such portals at an angle: Now a regular near clipping plane will not always work here, it will either intersect with the wall the portal is sitting on, or possibly with objects in front of the wall. The desired near clipping plane would be aligned like the portal, producing a view volume more like this: or this in 3D: So here is my question: How does one construct or "truncate" a view/projection matrix to achieve such an off-camera-normal (near) clipping plane?

  If I create a mobile turn-based game which could consist from 2 up to 6 players. I expect the server to support for about hundreds of game. And I aim for something free and not costly technology. What software and hardware recommendation would be enough for me? I've found some game server engine such as photon. But is it too much for a simple game? I'm thinking of using REST technology with F3 PHP server and Mysql. Will it be adequate? Will only one physical server enough? What is the hardware recommendation for the server?

• Is there a way to publish IOS app from windows/Linux?

  So I have been using Linux(especially, ubuntu) and windows(windows 7) for a long time . But i dont have a MAC, neither do i have an iphone. I do not actually want to buy them either . So the problem here is :how do i publish my app from windows or linux ? Kindly do understand i am not speaking about jailbroken programs(for jail broken i phones), i do not have any one near me who will lend me a MAC to publish my app . I started learning objective C some time ago. However, whenever i search the internet i get this information that there is no full proof way of publishing an app from windows or Linux . I also do intend to make it a paid app, meaning i dont wanna make it free. It will be very helpful if someone can suggest a way to overcome this problem .

• Got problem with installation. "No root file system is defined."

  I'm very new with Ubuntu and generally with linux. I saw ubuntu and it seems like this OS is really good and stable, and so I decided to install it alongside my windows 7 OS. I have a few problems with the installation. Here is what I did: I downloaded the 64bit version from Ubuntu official website, and burned it on a dvd. I set the boot sequence to first load from my CD-Rom. Ubuntu installation started, and I chose "Install Ubuntu" in the menu. (where there is also a "Try Ubuntu" option) I clicked forward until I got into the installation type screen As you can see, the installation wont show my actual details about my hard drive! I have 1 hard drive with 750 GB - 80 GB - My main drive with windows 7 OS 600GB - All of my stuff 20GB Free space that I saved for Ubuntu But the installation wont show that!

  I'm developing a website and it's closing onto a private alpha/beta phase. It will be exposed to a small selected group of individuals who will provide a fair amount of feedback. What options do I have for this feedback system? I would certainly like to make it collaborative (excluding email). I could mock up a really simple message board, but would rather use my time elsewhere. The feedback will mainly consist of feature suggestions and bug reports. • Changing read-write permissions on my external Seagate hard drive

  I have an external hard drive (Seagate Free Agent) that I normally download files to. I have a dual boot Ubuntu 11.10 along with Windows 7-64 bit. I can read all of my files in my external HD perfectly, but when I attempt to do a download of a file to this drive, I get an "unable to write because of read only" disk error. When I attempt to change the permissions of the disk through the "Properties" bar, I still get an error that I don't have the proper permissions to change permissions. I have heard of "mounting" the disk, but I am afraid of mistakenly reformatting and destroying all the data that I have currently on that drive. How best should I safely change the permissions on that drive so that I can write and download files to the drive?? The drive is listed under /dev/sdc1.

• Where to get PNG icons/graphics for game development for kids? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Where can I find free sprites and images? I'm teaching kids to program using Ruby and the gaming framework Gosu/Chingu. Kids love it, including the part where they have to look for the icons/graphics for their game objects. I direct them to iconarchive.com, but the selection is sometimes very limited, the graphics aren't always with transparent backgrounds and sometimes the art requires payment. I don't mind paying for an educational license of some sort, but I want the kids to easily select graphics they can use in their games. Is there another resource better suited for this purpose? I don't have a good solution for this, but would also love a site they can get cool background images for their games.

• Help with a formula for Google Adwords [closed]

  Hi guys, This question is more about maths and algorythms in Google Adwords but guess it's the most appropriate community in SE to ask this. I am creating a spreadsheet to calculate Adword formulas and I am stuck in how to calculate the Monthly Net Income for each keyword. I have created a formula which calculates it but can't figure out how to limit the Monthly Budget. • How to reduce the time it takes to load my web game? [closed]

  I created a puzzle game with Unity and uploaded it to one server. This works fine, but I bought a new server and uploaded my game to it as well. There, the loading time is much longer. These are the servers: http://pinheadsinteractive.com/Mozzie/ (fast) http://operation-mozzie-free.com/ (slow) The Unity files are exactly the same from one server to the next. My client is dissatisfied with the new, slow loading time. So, how can I reduce the time my Unity game takes to load? Even in some cases they faced the problem that they could not load the game at all. For the the moment, I'm using an iframe on the new sever as a workaround, but the issue still remains unsolved.

• What does backup procedures and troubleshooting guidelines mean for a system

  I am writing the documentation for a piece of software which I have made but I don't understand what it means in some aspects. It asks me to write about backup procedures but what exactly does this mean? Does this mean like backing up the database on another hosting service or something else entirely? I am dumbfounded by what troubleshooting guidelines are as well.   I am planning to create an e-commerce website for users to buy products and services. In this website I want users to register and also participate in something like a browser game, where every user may receive some questions which they have to answer. For each question they successfully answered, they receive points and the number of collected points will decide on which rank they are. Edit 2 Currently I am considering using only HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, SQL to design this e-commerce website.
