  I know that 25 lines of lock free code is harder to do than 1000 lines of On_Click()... code but I wonder does anybody know in general what is the productivity of the average programmer in top tech companies. Motivation: I often go ??? mode when I see how low LoC/ day i produce(Im new to the my current language and Im part of the big project, but still..) and I would like to know how bad I am. :) If you are gonna warn me that LoC is a terrible measure I agree, but it is most exact one in a sense that I cant go and write 0.01% of Chrome or IE and say it took me this long so....

  The way I see it you have a couple of options for including a blog on your site. Roll your own Install Something Like Wordpress Use a hosted service like Tumblr Obviously, if you can get away with Option 3 you have done yourself a favor. I have been using Tumblr and pointing blog.mydomain.com to the domains.tumblr.com CNAME to get a free blog that looks like it belongs to my site. I want to be able to display my blog on my root level hostname like mydomain.com/blog. The whole point of moving from blog.mydomain.com to mydomain.com/blog is for SEO purposes. Whats the best way to go about this and still get to leverage a hosted blogging platform like Tumblr?

• Access to my files on Android

  I am thinking of subscribing to Dropbox which is slightly more costly than Ubuntu one but I need access to my files on the go, and I prefer to use my smartphone to my netbook most of the time as I like to travel light. I do not want to stream music, I want access to my files only. Whereas there is a free app for Dropbox to access said files, there isn't one for Ubuntu. I would be prepared to wait a while if you have got this in hand, have you actually given this any thought? Please tell me whether I should ignore Ubuntu One and link up with Dropbox?

• How can I defend Ruby on Rails against customers' not technical opinion?

  My customer, a translations business owner, just told me that he has been reading about Ruby on Rails and told me that "there are more PHP guys around there" and "it seems the community prefers it". What would you, as software engineer and freelancer, say to the customer to achieve these goals: Sell Make him see that the technology is my expert decision and Rails is as good or better than PHP (+ whatever framework) for this particular project. • skype crashes, also audio problems 13.10

  Ive always had problems with skype ususally with audio, trying to keep the usb headphones set correctly. Wha tive found is that when i see the Pulseaudio server in the audio list in Skype, and thats my only option, Skype works good,...stable and reliable. Second issue: Its been crashing a bit, just locks up and the only thing to free it up is a reboot,.. These problems are under the new release 13.10. so concider this a bug report. DEVELOPERS: You all need to make a good channel for people to report bugs,.... OK thats all/

• How to remove items from an arraylist without shrinking the list [migrated]

  I have a case where I am using the ArrayList to keep a list of items that are keyed by their position in the list. Other objects reference the ArrayList items by their position. If I delete one of the items from the list, I don't want the list to shrink because that would invalidate all other references to items in the list (e.g. item 2 is now in position 1). My solution to the shrinking array list problem is to null the position in the arraylist so that the list will not shrink. I am curious whether this will free the memory formerly held by the item at that position. If there is a better way to accomplish this requirement, I would like to know about it.

  After running chkdsk C: /F /R and finding out that my hard disk has 24 KB in bad sectors (log is posted below), I decided to run Windows 7's System File Checker utility (sfc /scannow). SFC showed the ff. message after I ran it: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log." Since the CBS.log file is too large, I ran findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt" (as per Microsoft's KB 928228 article) to only get the log text pertaining to the corrupt files. (log is also posted below) How do I troubleshoot and repair the corrupted files mentioned by sfc /scannow? • Summer Programming Plans

  I've wanted to start "hacking" for many months now. But I put it off in favor of school and other things. Now, though, I'm free for the summer and want to learn as much as I can. I have a rough idea of what I want to try my hand at, but need some guidance as to what specifically - and how - I should learn. This is my plan so far: 1) Get good at programming in general. I plan to read up on how to think/work like a programmer. I'm waiting for the Pragmatic Programmer to arrive, which will be the first book I read. Q: What other books/ebooks should I look at? What more can I do here? 2) Learn/Improve at HTML/CSS. My first project will be to make a personal website/blog for myself using HTML and CSS. ----Then I hope to write/design articles like Dustin Curtis. After I finish this (and learn a programming language) I'll try to create user-based a user-focused website. Q: It's my understanding that just trying to design/manage websites is a good way to learn/improve at HTML/CSS. Is that all correct? 3) Try music development. This might be a sort of stretch for stackoverflow, but I'm interested in mixing/making techno songs. (Think Justice, or Daft Punk, or MSTRKRFT.) Q: I have a Mac. Any ideas on how I could start/learn music making? Any programs I should download, for instance? 4) My main goal: Learning a web development language/framework. I'm a year into learning/using C++. But what I really want to do is develop websites and web apps. I've searched online, and there seems to be great debate over which language/framework to learn first (and which is best). I think I've narrowed it down to three: Ruby (Rails), Python (Django), and PHP (?). Q #1: Which should I learn and use first? (Reasons?) Q #2: One reason I was leaning towards PHP is that I'm taking a PHP development course next semester. Learning it now would make that course easy. If PHP was not the answer to Q #1, is it worth learning both? Or, would it be better to just focus on PHP for this summer and next semester, and then transition thereafter to a better language? 5) iPhone/iPad Programming (Maybe). I've a number of simple, useful app ideas that I'd like to eventually get too. I just bought a Mac, as well as a few app development books. • Trac vs. Redmine vs. JIRA vs. FogBugz for one-man shop?

  Background I am a one-man freelancer looking for a project management software that can provide the following requirements. I have used Trac for about a year now. Tried Redmine and FogBugz on Demand for a couple of weeks. Never tried JIRA before. Basically, I'm looking for a piece of software that: Facilitates developer-client communication/collaboration Does time tracking Requirements Record time estimates/Time tracking Clients must be able to create/edit his own tickets/cases Clients must not see Developer created tickets/cases (internal) Affordable (price) with multiple clients Nice-to-haves Supports multiple projects in one installation Free eclipse integration (Mylyn) Easy time-tracking without using the Web UI (Trac's post commit hook or Redmine's commit message scanning) Clients can access the Wiki Export the data to standard formats My evaluation Trac can basically fulfill most of the above requirements, but with lots of customizations and plug-ins that it doesn't feel so clean. One downside is that the main trunk (0.11) has been around for a year or more and I still haven't seen much tendency of any upgrades coming up. Redmine has the cleanest Web UI. It's design philosophy seems to be the most elegant, with its innovative commit message scanning and stuff. However, the current version doesn't seem to be very mature and stable yet. It doesn't support internal (private) tickets and the time-tracking commit message patch doesn't support the trunk version. The good thing about it is that the main trunk still seems to be actively developed. FogBugz is actually a very well written piece of software. However the idea of paying $25/month for the client to be able to log-in to the system seems a little bit too far off for an individual developer. The free version supports letting clients create/view their own cases using email, which is a sub-optimal alternative to having a full-fledged list of the user's own cases. That also means clients can't read/write wiki pages. Its time-tracking approach is innovative and good though. However the fact that all the eclipse integration (Bugclipse, Foglyn) are commercial. Yet other investments before I can use my bug-tracker! If I revert back to the Web UI, it's not really a fast rendering Web service. Also, the in-built report functions are excellent (e.g. evidence based scheduling) JIRA is something I have zero experience with. Can someone with JIRA experience recommend why it might be a good fit for this particular situation? Question Can we share experience on this? Any specific plugins/customizations would that would best suit the requirements for this case?

• JFileChooser for directories on the Mac: how to make it not suck?

  The JFileChooser in "directories only" mode on the Mac has two serious, crippling problems: 1) You cannot create directories with it 2) You cannot switch drives This is rather a huge problem for my installer app. As far as I can tell, Apple provides no way around this problem, you can't even activate the non-native directory chooser ... so the only alternative is to find a free/open source pure-Java replacement widget. Does anybody know of one?

  I am getting the following error during a web service request to a remote web service: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel. --- System.Security.Authentication.AuthenticationException: The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure. Is there anyway to ignore this error, and continue. It seems the remote certificate is not signed.
