• NRF Week - Disney Store Tour

  Disney has created a real buzz at this year's NRF event. Yesterday morning we began the Oracle Retail Exchange program with a visit to the flagship Disney store in Times Square. Additionally Oracle made a key announcement with Disney  on Oracle Retail's Point of Sale implementation in 330 stores worldwide. Today   Disney's Steve Finney gave a super session on The Magic of Disney at the NRF Big Show. We also saw Disney making an exclusive news announcement about their plans for Global store openings at the Oracle trade show stand - with a little help from Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Disney Stores have been entirely reinvented since the company in 2008 took ownership after previously franchising the retail arm of the business. They have subsequently been a strong Oracle partner and technology has played a key role in their re imagination of the store environment. The new Imagination stores have a 20% higher footfall and margins are up 25%. The Disney brand is synonymous with magical and memorable experiences for children of all ages. The company is achieving a unique retail experience that delights children and shareholders alike! Technology is a key pillar in helping to deliver on both a strong operating model and a unique customer experience - the best thirty minutes in a child's day is their aim. Steve Finney this morning said their technology has to be as reliable as a theme park ride. Store experiences are much more enjoyable when there are short waiting times and children can interact with their favourite characters through magic mirrors, mobile point of sale, touch screens and custom animations that are digitally transmitted to stores globally. The Oracle Retail Point of Sale with iPad touch screens reduces check out times, stores customer data, ensures that promotions are delivered accurately and reduces losses. This means higher levels of guest conversion, increased availability and convenience for customers who want to check availability at other locations. Disney is a pioneer. At NRF's 100th show, we had the privilege of learning from a retailer using technology as a creative force to drive their business forward.

• Teach Your Kid to Code (&hellip;and Vote early!)

  Next Tuesday I will be at the CMAP main meeting presenting Teach Your Kid to Code. Next Tuesday is of course Election Day so you have to make sure you vote early in order to get over to CMAP for the 7:00PM presentation. I will be co-presenting this talk with my 5th grade son. Here is the abstract: Have you ever wanted a way to teach your kid to code? For that matter, have you ever wanted to simply be able to explain to your kid what you do for a living? Putting things in a context that a kid can understand is not as easy as it sounds. If you are someone curious about these concepts, this is a “can’t miss” presentation that will be co-presented by Justin Michelotti (5th grader) and his father. Bring your kid with you to CMAP for this fun and educational session. We will show tools you may not have been aware of like SmallBasic and Kodu – we’ll even throw in a little Visual Studio and Windows 8! • box2d tween what am I missing

  I have a Box2D project and I want to tween an kinematic body from position A, to position B. • One page using querystring or many folders and pages?

  I have an application where I have the 'core' code in one folder for which there is a virtual directory in the root, such that I can include any core files using /myApp/core/bla.asp. I then have two folders outside of this with a default.asp which currently use the querystring to define what page should be displayed. One page is for general users, the other will only be accessible to users who have permission to manage users / usergroups / permissions. The core code checks the querystring and then checks the permissions for that user. An example of this as it is now is default.asp?action=view&viewtype=list&objectid=server. I am not worried about SEO as this is an internal app and uses Windows Auth. My question is, is it better the way it is now or would it be better to have something like the following: /server/view/list/ /server/view/?id=123 /server/create/ /server/edit/?id=123 /server/remove/?id=123 In the above folders I would have a home page which defines all the variables which are currently determined by the querystring - in /server/create/ for example, I would define the action as 'create', object name as 'server' and so on. In terms of future development, I really have no idea which method would be best. I think the 2nd method would be best in terms of following what page does what but this is such a huge change to make at this stage that I would really like some opinions, preferably based on experience. PS Sorry if the tags are wrong - I am new to this forum and thought this was a bit too much of a discussion for StackOverflow as that is very much right / wrong answer based. • Transient VO : Powerful J2EE Design Pattern

  We had a use-case wherein, the communication has to happen between regions residing under differenet taskfows. Essentially, they had a common set of parameters to be used. Initially, we resorted to the  use of pageFlowScope variables, but they are tightly coupled with the individual task flows. So, how the communication has to happen..?Some of the alternatives that we brainstormed into are - 1.usage of adf contextual event - This is a powerful feature indeed for such use-cases, but there is a considerable cost involved with it. So, before resorting to it, you have to make sure that you have good enough reason to use it.It actually does a server roundtrip and also the issue of an event and listening part to it is also something which requires your attention !!2.Use a transientVO with shared data control scope - with shared data control scope, the transient VO rows would be persistent across the task flows in your application. All you have to do is to create the attributes in the transientVO(prefereably with the same names - for the ease of conversion) and create some utility methods in VOImpl for creating row, updating row and deleting a row. You also have to make sure that the vo row is initialized per http request( this you can do in a bookmark method of your index.jspx - residing in adfc-config.xml), else the ui fields binded to the transient vo attributes won't render in UI.Hope, this helps and this should be a common use-case across apps.

• Is there a name for a testing method where you compare a set of very different designs?

  "A/B testing" is defined as "a method of marketing testing by which a baseline control sample is compared to a variety of single-variable test samples in order to improve response rates". The point here, of course, is to know which small single-variable changes are more optimal, with the goal of finding the local optimum. However, one can also envision a somewhat related but different scenario for testing the response rate of major re-designs: take a baseline control design, take one or more completely different designs, and run test samples on those redesigns to compare response rates. As a practical but contrived example, imagine testing a set of designs for the same website, one being minimalist "googly" design, one being cluttered "Amazony" design, and one being an artsy "designy" design (e.g. maximum use of design elements unlike Google but minimal simultaneously presented information, like Google but unlike Amazon) Is there an official name for such testing? It's definitely not A/B testing, since the main component of it (finding local optimum by testing single-variable small changes that can be attributed to response shift) is not present. This is more about trying to compare a set of local optimums, and compare to see which one works better as a global optimum. It's not a multivriable, A/B/N or any other such testing since you don't really have specific variables that can be attributed, just different designs.

• kubuntu 12.10 will not boot on mac 2.93Ghz intel core 2 duo

  I feel like I've tried it all and nothing is changing. I've tried booting from a liveUSB, a liveDVD, and I've checked the mod5 everything matches up. I've even tried different distro's same result on all of them. Just for reference: linuxmint 13kde and Fedora 17. I've also tried changing my liveUSB building software just in case. I've tried unetbootin and Linux USB builder. Both have same results, my opinion is that it is a hardware issue since I'm having near the same result with all of these variables. So now what is actually happening? I can boot up to a screen. I say A screen because some of the ways that dvd's and usb's boot differs. Now on liveusb I'm reaching a black screen with white text. Says booting: done, then below says loading ramdrive: done, then below that it says preparing to boot kernel this may take a while and buckle in or something to that effect. Then nothing. That's it computer freezes. I've waited up to 8 hrs and still nothing. Ok for the liveDVD Everything goes according to instructions per pdf files on every distro, until linux starts. I can only run in compatibility mode. When any other option is tried the computer seems to freeze/stall/be a pain in my butt... Ok well that seems to wrap it up. Also if I'm not explaining something well, I'm sorry I can try to clear anything up. I'm not the best at descriptions. I'm leaving with a tech specs of my mac: 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB ram, NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 graphics, bought in late 09" it's the 24" model, let me know if anymore information will help. • Input handling between game loops

  This may be obvious and trivial for you but as I am a newbie in programming I come with a specific question. I have three loops in my game engine which are input-loop, update-loop and render-loop. Update-loop is set to 10 ticks per second with a fixed timestep, render-loop is capped at around 60 fps and the input-loop runs as fast as possible. I am using one of the Javascript frameworks which provide such things but it doesn't really matter. Let's say I am rendering a tile map and the view of which elements are rendered depends on camera-like movement variables which are modified during key pressing. This is only about camera/viewport and rendering, no game physics involved here. And now, how can I handle input events among these loops to keep consistent engine reaction? Am I supposed to read the current variable modified with input and do some needed calculations in a update-loop and share the result so it could be interpolated in a render-loop? Or read the input effect directly inside the render-loop and put needed calculations inside? I thought interpreting user input inside an update-loop with a low tick rate would be inaccurate and kind of unresponsive while rendering with interpolation in the final view. How it is done properly in games overall?

• How can I support objects larger than a single tile in a 2D tile engine?

  I´m currently working on a 2D Engine containing an isometric tile map. It´s running quite well but I'm not sure if I´ve chosen the best approach for that kind of engine. To give you an idea what I´m thinking about right now, let's have a look at a basic object for a tile map and its objects: public class TileMap { public List<MapRow> Rows = new List<MapRow>(); public int MapWidth = 50; public int MapHeight = 50; } public class MapRow { public List<MapCell> Columns = new List<MapCell>(); } public class MapCell { public int TileID { get; set; } } Having those objects it's just possible to assign a tile to a single MapCell. What I want my engine to support is like having groups of MapCells since I would like to add objects to my tile map (e.g. a house with a size of 2x2 tiles). How should I do that? Should I edit my MapCell object that it may has a reference to other related tiles and how can I find an object while clicking on single MapCells? Or should I do another approach using a global container with all objects in it?

  Let's say you have an input file with many entries like these: date, ticker, open, high, low, close, <and some other values> And you want to execute a pattern matching routine on the entries(rows) in that file, using a candlestick pattern, for example. (See, Doji) And that pattern can appear on any uniform time interval (let t = 1s, 5s, 10s, 1d, 7d, 2w, 2y, and so on...). Say a pattern matching routine can take an arbitrary number of rows to perform an analysis and contain an arbitrary number of subpatterns. In other words, some patterns may require 4 entries to operate on. Say also that the routine (may) later have to find and classify extrema (local and global maxima and minima as well as inflection points) for the ticker over a closed interval, for example, you could say that a cubic function (x^3) has the extrema on the interval [-1, 1]. (See link) What would be the most natural choice in terms of a data structure? What about an interface that conforms a Ticker object containing one row of data to a collection of Ticker so that an arbitrary pattern can be applied to the data. What's the first thing that comes to mind? I chose a doubly-linked circular linked list that has the following methods: push_front() push_back() pop_front() pop_back() [] //overloaded, can be used with negative parameters But that data structure seems very clumsy, since so much pushing and popping is going on, I have to make a deep copy of the data structure before running an analysis on it. So, I don't know if I made my question very clear -- but the main points are: What kind of data structures should be considered when analyzing sequential data points to conform to a pattern that does NOT require random access? What kind of data structures should be considered when classifying extrema of a set of data points?

• Optimizing hash lookup & memory performance in Go

  As an exercise, I'm implementing HashLife in Go. In brief, HashLife works by memoizing nodes in a quadtree so that once a given node's value in the future has been calculated, it can just be looked up instead of being re-calculated. So eg. if you have a node at the 8x8 level, you remember it by its four children (each at the 2x2 level). So next time you see an 8x8 node, when you calculate the next generation, you first check if you've already seen a node with those same four children. This is extended up through all levels of the quadtree, which gives you some pretty amazing optimizations if eg. you're 10 levels above the leaves. Unsurprisingly, it looks like the perfmance crux of this is the lookup of nodes by child-node values. Currently I have a hashmap of {&upper_left_node,&upper_right_node,&lower_left_node,&lower_right_node} -> node So my lookup function is this: func FindNode(ul, ur, ll, lr *Node) *Node { var node *Node var ok bool nc := NodeChildren{ul, ur, ll, lr} node, ok = NodeMap[nc] if ok { return node } node = &Node{ul, ur, ll, lr, 0, ul.Level + 1, nil} NodeMap[nc] = node return node } What I'm trying to figure out is if the "nc := NodeChildren..." line causes a memory allocation each time the function is called. If it does, can I/should I move the declaration to the global scope and just modify the values each time this function is called? Or is there a more efficient way to do this? Any advice/feedback would be welcome. (even coding style nits; this is literally the first thing I've written in Go so I'd love any feedback)

  Here is a handy list of translation and localization-related resources for user experience professionals. Following these will help you design an easily translatable user experience. Most of the references here are for web pages or software. Fundamentally, remember your designs will be consumed globally, and never divorce the design process from the development or deployment effort that goes into bringing your designs to life in code. Ask yourself today: Do you know how the text you are using in your designs are delivered to the customer, even in English? Key areas that UX designers always seen to fall foul of, in my space anyway, are: Terminology that is impossible to translate (jargon, multiple modifiers, gerunds) or is used inconsistently Poorly written, verbose text (really, just write well in English, no special considerations) String construction (concatenation of parts assembled dynamically) Composite widget positioning (my favourite) Hard-coded fonts, small font sizes, or character formatting or casing that doesn't work globally Format that is not separate from content Restricted real estate not allowing for text expansion in translation Forcing formatting with breaks, and hard-coding alphabetical sorting Graphics that do not work in Bi-Di languages (because they indicate directionality and can't flip) or contain embedded text. • Fun with upgrading and BCP

  I just had trouble with using BCP out via xp_cmdshell. Probably serves me right but that's a different issue. I got a strange error message 'Unable to resolve column level collations' which turned out to be a bit misleading. I wasted some time comparing the collations of the the server, the database and all the columns in the query. I got so desperate that I even read the Books Online article. Still no joy but then I tried the interweb. It turns out that calling bcp without qualifying it with a path causes Windows to search the folders listed in the Path environment variable - in that order - and execute the first version of BCP it can find. But when you do an in-place version upgrade, the new paths are added on the end of the Path variable so you don't get the latest version of BCP by default. To check which version you're getting execute bcp -v at the command line. The version number will correspond to SQL Server version numbering (eg. 10.50.n = 2008 R2). To examine and/or edit the Path variable, right-click on My Computer, select Properties, go to the Advanced tab and click on the Environment Variables button. If you change the variable you'll have to restart the SQL Server service before it takes effect.

  I'm trying to create a list of bounding boxes for each cube drawn, so I can use the boxes to intersect with a ray that my mouse position is casting, but I have no idea how.
