• Dot Net Code Coverage Test Tools - there is now a choice

  I have been pleasantly surprised this week to discover that there is a choice of tools for measuring Code Coverage. If you have Visual Studio Team edition, then if you are using MSTEST, then you have built-in code coverage, however even then you may need a standalone tool. The tools I have found are (costs are per seat): 1) NCover  http://www.ncover.com/ (from $199 to $658 per seat) I have used it but it is very expensive. 2) PartCover http://sourceforge.net/projects/partcover/ - Free!  Steep initial learning curve to get it to work. 3) Dot Cover from http://www.jetbrains.com/dotcover/ - Personal licence - normally $99 but at a introductory price of $75 and free for OpenSource Developers (details at http://www.jetbrains.com/dotcover/buy/buy.jsp#opensource_) 4) Test Matrix from http://submain.com/products/testmatrix.aspx - $149 for a licence

• 2D Game Dev Resources/Tutorials for Windows (Phone) 8 Development?

  I am really exited about the launch of windows 8, windows phone 8 so I decided to start learning how to develop games for them. I was even more exited when I found out that html, css, javascript can be used to develop apps for these platforms. I'm familiar with some standard html, css3 that i used to develop some websites, but I only know some VERY basics of javascript. I know things like HTML5 canvas and image sprites can be used to develop games, but I haven't found any tutorials that I understood good enough ;/ So I am asking you now. Can you suggest any good tutorials/resources (preferably video) that start from beginners level and go to advanced into game development with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. It would be really good if such tutorials concentrated on game development for mobile phones (e.g. detecting when user touches the screen, using optimised images for hi res and standard displays, adopting to screen size etc) Oh.. and I forgot to mention that I am only interested in 2d game development.

• Getting to math applications gradually

  I'm currently getting a formal degree related to computation, in particular my current focus is numerical programming, scientific computing and machine learning. I'd love to apply that knowledge in game dev and expand it with statistics, probability theory, and graph theory (probably even linear algebra). The question is: which spheres of gamedev are filled with such math stuff, is it possible to advance in those without being a part of a group of people and how to get to it gradually? P.S.: I've got experience with commercial java dev and am getting my hands on C/C++ at the moment, however, I'm opened to go ahead and try Unity3D and etc.

• VS 11 vs VS 2012 [closed]

  I'm using Visual Studio 11 Beta at home, mainly for learning purposes. But now it's possible to download VS 2012 RC. Does it make sense to install it instead? Does it have many changes comparing with VS 11? I know that VS 11 doesn't work with Azure, was it fixed in VS 2012? EDIT: Actually I found this: What’s new in the RC since Beta, which describes changes in RC and if I decide to install it, I don't need to uninstall previous version: We’ve enabled upgrade from beta to RC, so if you’re using the same product edition (e.g. Professional, Ultimate, etc.), you do not need to uninstall the beta first. • Hidden Loading with UDK

  I was wondering, how would I go about creating hidden loading scenes with UDK? For example, a character walks in to an elevator, the elevator fakes movement, whilst the previous floor is destroyed and the next floor is loaded on top. I assume it's possible with UDK, since it's supposedly rather flexible, but I've never used UDK before (I decided to ask this question first to save me learning it all, finding out it isn't possible, then giving up). So yeah, is hiding the loading process possible? And if so, how would I go about doing it?

• New to CG shader programming, what program should I use to write and test them?

  I have started witting some shaders. First ones were fairly easy to write in notepad but now I need something with a bit more meat. I have checked rendermonnkey that seems to support CG but it is really old and don't know if it is a good option. On the other hand there exist this FX Composer 2.0 but it seems somthing that could really distract me from learning shaders because it seems a pretty deep program. Are there any other possibilities? There's a really nice alternative to write shaders named ShaderToy but just supports GLSL. Any information will be really welcomed. Thanks in advance.

Also, how does mocking tie in with a TDD discipline? I'm not looking for opinions, I'm looking for developers' advice, tips and learning resources regarding TDD's usage based on their experience. I'm going to spend the day equipping myself with enough knowledge about TDD to start making small steps towards using it but I don't know to what extent I should be using it.

• How to properly URL/domain forward

  No clue on a title for this, someone feel free to suggest an edit. I have a client that has a website. He owns around 200 domains, and wants each domain to contain content from the main website. The header, footer, and navigation bars will remain the same for each domain, but the actual page content will vary (obviously duplicate content issues, open to suggestions) He wants each individual page to be its own separate domain, rather than a url within the main domain. (page1.com page2.com etc - NOT site.com/page1.html, however the file is actually hosted at site.com/page1.html - all links will direct to site.com/whatever accordingly) What would be the best place to start reading / learning on how to do this, and what concerns/considerations should be taken into mind?

  Okay, so I'm a java developer (or at least I think I am),and also a student at the same time I want to get a job when I graduate,I'll be graduating in a year or so (hopefully) (Note: my major has nothing to do with programming) Now, I'm between a rock and a hard place I also want to nail the foundations to become a good software developer. I want to be able to write programs that solve problems,not just glue code The software market in my country for java developers is just a few developers working with Java EE (struts,spring,hibernate....etc) I'm currently learning C++ with this book. I've also watched most of the 1st lecture of this course and I understood pretty much everything I watched To sum it up, I have three options Learn Java EE Learn C++ Learn Scheme Which is better for me at this point?

• Custom keybindings without gnome-settings-daemon

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 (Fallback) and I am trying to slim it down, mostly for fun/learning experience. I killed gnome-settings-daemon because I set up my theming from elsewhere. But now some of my keybindings are lost. I think the windowmanager ones are still working, like Alt-Tab and switch workspace. But my mediakeys to change volume and my custom keybindings are not working anymore. Is there a different way to save custom keybindings? Do I really need to run settings-manager to setup my keybindings?

  Have sophisticated adaptive programming, will travel - so to speak. I'm part of a group that developed sophisticated learning / adaptive software for robotics. The system "thinks" via its simulator, building and adapting code on its own; and then carries out the best solution. The more the simulated fighter fights with the human player, the more it learns to counter that players fighting skills. But there should be more.   Hey guys, I am a graduate CS student (Data mining and machine learning) and have a good exposure to core JAVA (3 years). I have read up a bunch of stuff on Design patterns J2EE Web services( soap and rest) spring and hibernate Java Concurrency - advanced features like Task and Executors. I would now like to do a project combining this stuff (over my free time of corse) to get a better understanding of these things and to kind of make an end to end software (to learn the best design principles etc + svn, maven). Any good project ideas would be really appreciated. I just wanna build this stuff to learn so I dont really mind re-inventing the wheel. Also, anything related to data mining would be an added bonus (fits with my research) but absolutly not necesary (since this project is more to learn to do large scale software developement)

• How can I set a time limit for a game?

  I am learning the multi-threading and timer in C# now. But it seems I can't find a good solution. For example, I would like to see how many addition problems that I can solve within 1 min. I would like my program to have A digital clock to count for 60 seconds in the top of my Console. Print a math problem in the middle of my console wait for my input. When 60 seconds is done, stop the math problem challenges immediately (most of time, it is still waiting for my input, but we will stop it immediately). Count how many correct problems that I have solved. Two challenges of the program now. a) how can we make sure the print time and math problem do not mess up. b) how can we stop the math challenges part immediately after time is up

• Numerical stability in continuous physics simulation

  Pretty much all of the game development I have been involved with runs afoul of simulating a physical world in discrete time steps. This is of course very simple, but hardly elegant (not to mention mathematically inaccurate). It also has severe disadvantages when large values are involved (either very large speeds, or very large time intervals). I'm trying to make a continuous physics simulation, just for learning, which goes like this: time = get_time() while true do new_time = get_time() update_world(new_time - time) render() time = new_time end And update_world() is a continuous physical simulation. Meaning that for example, for an accelerated object, instead of doing object.x = object.x + object.vx * timestep object.vx = object.vx + object.ax * timestep -- timestep is fixed I'm doing something like object.x = object.x + object.vx * deltatime + object.ax * ((deltatime ^ 2) / 2) object.vx = object.vx + object.ax * deltatime However, I'm having a hard time with the numerical stability of my solutions, especially for very large time intervals (think of simulating a physical world for hundreds of thousands of virtual years). Depending on the framerate, I get wildly different solutions. How can I improve the numerical stability of my continuous physical simulations?

  I am college student of Software Engineering. My worries are that while I am concentrating on my studies, my peers are getting down with the code (e.g. HTML, ASP, PHP, etc) to earn money. Should I be worried that I am not doing coding like them? I was asked to be Microsoft Student Partner but I refused because the person what was doing before me told it was just arranging events. Nothing as such like getting with Microsoft and coding. Should I be writing code and earning money as I still am in 4th semester? I only have C++ as learning language in college. Will my job count on these projects that I do, or should I concentrate on studies for now to get maximum benefit?

• Podcast with AJI about iOS development coming from a .NET background

  I talked with Jeff and John from AJI Software the other day about developing for the iOS platform. We chatted about learning Xcode and Objective-C, provisioning devices and the app publishing process. We all have a .NET background and made lots of comparisons between the two platforms/ecosystems/fanbois. They even let me throw in a plug for Christian Radio Locator. Jeff was my first contact with the Kansas City .NET community. It was probably about 10 years ago. He pushed me to talk more (and rescued me from my first talk that bombed) and blog more. One time a group of us took a 16 hour car trip to South Carolina for a code camp and live podcasted the whole thing. • Why is web app development path in Java this much confusing? [closed]

  I'm currently a .net web developer and I really like to switch to Java. I've used JSP about 7 years ago to develop and deploy a small web application on a JRUN app server. But after 7 years that I like to return back to Java, I can't find the clue. There are many web development frameworks that exist in Java world and each of them has fans that recommand it. There are extensions that sit above jvm for web development (like jRuby i think). I am confused and I do not know where to start the path of learning java web development. I do not want to focus on custom tailor-made approaches and want to remain on the basic path of developing with standard tools and methods and deploy them into standard app servers. (For example some says do not use EJBs, some says focus on MVC facilities like JSF. I'm confused and I do not know the path that i should go on)
