• Installing Windows 7 destroyed my dual boot setup

  I have a laptop on which I have two drives with separate Windows XP installs, one barebones for music production, the other "normal" Windows XP with Office etc. (unfortunately the bios won't give a boot disk choice). Normally I would be presented with two Windows XPs on booting. Selecting the second one would get me into the "normal" installation on disk 1 (C:). Selecting the first in boot order would give me D:\ (disk 2) with the barebones XP. However, I installed Windows 7 Home onto disk 1 (C:), but there were no dual boot options anymore, even though I installed DualBoot Pro and added Windows XP disk D:. The options now show up, but selecting Windows XP just turns into a reboot back to where I started.

• What would happen in a Software Raid 1 of one HDD and one SSD?

  Hi, I'm running my Windows 7 installation and all of my apps from an SSD for performance reasons. Since SSD's can instantly die at any moment, I'm looking for some kind of data backup strategy. Right Now I regularly backing up the drive image on a hard disk, but that only happens once per day, which is not enough for my taste. So I got an idea: What if I created a software raid 1 of the SSD and partition on my Hard disk? All data would be mirrored on both drives, making this a lot safer. But what about performance? Will Windows 7 detect that the SSD is faster than the hard drive and always read from the SSD? Or will it randomly read from both, thus reducing read performance? After I was forced to reverse the process, but could not find tools or explanations of how to do it. • Apache Passenger can't find gem

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and I've transferred over some sites built in Sinatra. I've set up Phusion passenger, but when I visit the sites I'm getting a Passenger LoadError claiming that passenger has 'no such file to load -- sinatra' yet when I run gem list or sudo gem list, I clearly see sinatra listed. Why can't passenger find this gem? • Port forwarding no longer works

  Prior to testing an OpenVPN installation, I setup a basic VPN server using the software already built into Windows 7. Port forwarding on the Linksys router worked as normal and I was able to connect remotely. After doing an install of OpenVPN Access Server on a spare box running Ubuntu, and adding new ports to be forwarded I was unable to access the VPN from an external source as the required ports all indicated that they were closed. (During testing XRDP and VNCSERVER were also installed to facilitate access to the box) Checking back on the Windows 7 VPN resulted in no access to that vpn setup either. All ports are now reporting a being closed despite being previously open even ports that were being used for other services. Adding and removing port forwarding rules seem to have no effect. At this point, in order to troubleshoot, both the firewall and anti-virus software have been disabled on the Windows 7 machine. Could this be just a router issue? Is there any way out of this without having to reset and reconfigure the router?

• Monitor-Specific Color Profile Results In Yellow Grayscale Images

  I recently purchased a new Acer S201hl monitor. Many lay reviews compliment its color accuracy with people noting only a bit of a blueish tinge. After a little time, Windows found, and I installed, the Acer drivers via Microsoft Update. During the installation process, the software installed an ICC profile for the monitor from Acer. I recently noticed that when I view photos using Windows Live Photo Gallery, the colors are wrong. For example, grayscale document scans appear with yellow backgrounds instead of white backgrounds. This happens with both my external monitors and my ThinkPad's built-in screen. When I removed the monitor-specific profile from the list of profiles associated with a monitor (for example, removing the Acer profile from the Acer monitor), the problem went away for that screen. I checked with Microsoft KB939395 and though it says "an incorrect color profile [...] is used for the monitor," the profile associated with my ThinkPad's screen seemed to be correct, based on its name.

• Problem with Lenovo x200s Wifi under Ubutu Karmic

  Hi, I have just gotten my Lenovo X200s laptop, and I am install Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic on it. The installation went through without a hitch, but I can't get my wifi to work. lspci | grep Network Produces the following results: 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82567LM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03) 03:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. • Local network cache of PHP and Apache2 on Win Server 2008 R2

  Software configuration : I have a new server with Windows Server 2008 R2 installed via VMWare. I have installed Apache2.2, PHP5.2 and MySQL5.5 as separate packages. Issue : On my first installation of my application, all works great. When I updated some JS and CSS files and accessed my application again from a PC on local network, I got the old JS and CSS versions. When I access the same application on local server I got the latest versions of those files. Link of my application on local server is : http://localhost/BADIL Link of my application from local network is : http://LOCAL_SERVER_IP/BADIL I think that must be some cache but I don't know where. Maybe on Win Server 2008 R2 or on VMWare? The question is: Why, when I access my application on the server, everything works fine, but when I access the same application from a local network, I do not see the updated versions of JS and CSS files?

• Windows 8 won't boot after Boot Repair

  I've got a Sony Vaio laptop. Until yesterday I had Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 installed. Today I upgraded to Windows 8, which killed my OS selection screen. So I booted to Ubuntu 12.10 from a USB stick and ran Boot Repair. This recovered the GRUB screen and let me boot into my Ubuntu 12.04 installation, but now I can' boot Windows 8. When I select the option that booted Windows 7 before, it looks like it wants to start Windows 7 (sic) again (black screen, with the text "Windows is loading" or something), but then reboots the machine after a few seconds. I'm sure Boot Repair can fix this, but I know far too little about the whole booting thing to know the right settings for it. Here's my boot repair report thing.

  I am trying to install Windows Server 2008 R2 on a new Lenovo X201 or T410 laptop. Setup halts with the following pop-up: A required CD/DVD device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now. Note: If the windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive you can safely remove it for this step. The CD drive is obviously working, as it's booting from CD to get to this point. The only thing I can think is that it is to do with the fact they have SSD disks in - but that's just a guess.

• Run a MongoDB configuration server without 3GB of journal files

  For a production sharded MongoDB installation we need 3 configuration servers. According to the documentation "the config server mongod process is fairly lightweight and can be ran on machines performing other work". However, in the default configuration, they all have journalling enabled, and with preallocation this takes up 3 GB of disk space. I assume that the actual data and transaction volume of a config server is quite small, so that this seems a bit too much. Is there a way to (safely!) run these config servers with much less disk use for the journal? Do I need journalling at all on config servers? Can I set the journal size to be smaller?

• How can I uninstall AppFabric?

  I recently upgraded from Win 7 - Win 8. AppFabric was not one of the programs that came up as being incompatible when I ran the upgrade wizard, so I did not uninstall it. Now whenever I goto "Add or remove features" I get the following error: --------------------------- Windows Server AppFabric Setup Wizard --------------------------- Windows Server AppFabric is not supported on current operating system Windows 8 Pro(version 6.2.9200.0). Please refer to installation guide for the list of supported operating systems. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- Unfortunately the only way to uninstall AppFabric is via the "Add or remove features" - does anyone know a commandline command to kick the uninstall so I can at least access "Add or remove features"? Edit: C:\Windows\System32\AppFabric\Setup.exe /remove Throws the same error as above.

• HP Compaq T20 Thin Clients & Windows Server 2008 R2: RDP Disconnects instantly.

  Hello, I have some HP Compaq T20 Thin Clients connecting to a Windows Server 2003. Now I want to upgrade to 2008 R2, so I tested a trial installation with remote desktop in administration mode. So I try to connect my T20 to the server and... It doesn't matter if I turn off encryption or not it disconnects with an generic error instantly. The T20s have Windows CE embedded with RDP 5.2 installed. Out of curiosity I tried Windows Server 2008 (no R2) and it worked! I tried the same with a Windows 7 machine set up with- no work. I can not update the T20s to Windows NT embedded for example because they only have a low amount of flash memory. It seems the "new" version of RDP coming from Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008 R2 is completely incompatible with the older 5.2 version.   Hi, My webserver is running Plesk and part of my site structure goes like this: / /httpdocs (domain root folder, URL: http://www.domain.com) /subdomains /subdomains/blog/httpdocs (blog root folder, URL: http://blog.domain.com) I have a WordPress installation in the domain root folder and WP is configured to display a static page when accessing www.domain.com and to display the blog when accessing www.domain.com/blog. However, I want to redirect (using mod_rewrite) all requests from http://blog.domain.com/ to http://www.domain.com/blog/. A few examples: Accessing http://blog.domain.com/archives should access http://www.domain.com/blog/archives/ Accessing http://blog.domain.com/tag/abc should access http://www.domain.com/blog/tag/abc/ Accessing http://blog.domain.com/some-post-title should access http://www.domain.com/blog/some-post-title All this should be transparent to the user, the address shouldn't be changed on the browser's address bar. In better words, I want a URL rewrite and not a URL redirect. Is this achievable with mod_rewrite? Can anyone help me with the .htaccess? All my attempts on doing so have failed...

• Installing Win8 from ISO image error

  I installed a new SSD in my PC laptop which came with an OEM version of Windows 8. After trying unsuccesfully to get the OEM version of Windows onto the SSD drive I gave up and purchased and downloaded a NEW copy of Windows 8. After that I created an ISO image on my desktop machine and followed the instructions here to create a bootable USB flash drive. However, after going through the boot install process with the USB flash drive on my laptop I get the following message 'The product key entered does not match any of the Windows images available for installation. Enter a different product key.' But I wasn't asked to enter any key! Is this because the ISO image was created on a different machine? I really don't get why this should be so difficult.

  In our small office we are currently running a standalone tower server with WS 2008 R2, SQL Express and IIS. This server is going to be decommissioned and scrapped as its old and very noisy. We are going to purchase a new server with WS 2012 Standard and a heap of ram. It will still be a standalone server so it will be a domain controller, have SQL Express and IIS installed. We intend to install the hyper-v role and host a second virtual server to distribute the load. We are a small company and have only 15 staff members so its not a huge load on the server. Can a single server handle this type of installation, we don't want to purchase two servers. If so how should it be configured with regard to which software packages should be virtualized(if any). Redundancy is not a huge issue for us.

• Does any upgrade version of Visual Studio require an installed development tool?

  I'm wondering this from a legal standpoint and an installation-issue standpoint. I'm considering pre-ordering Visual Studio 2010 for future use in some home projects, and you cannot pre-order a full version, only an upgrade version. On the preorder page, it says: Eligible for upgrade with any previous version of Visual Studio or any other developer tool. In reality, I think it won't require anything installed, but from a legal standpoint, is this inclusive with development tools such as Eclipse? After installing Windows 7 on this PC, Eclipse is currently the only IDE I have installed. But really anything could be considered a developer tool, such as Notepad++ or Kaxaml. How has this worked in regards to previous upgrade versions?

• Setting up SSL on Glassfish V2 or V3

  My employer recently purchased a Trustwave SSL certificate. Trustwave advertises support on their website, but they don't give an installation guide like they do for their other servers at all, and I am having a difficult time getting it configured correctly with GlassFish. I found this http://blogs.sun.com/enterprisetechtips/entry/using_ssl_with_glassfish_v2 blog post that is sort of helpful, but I'm still unable to get it working (I think the issue is that I don't fully understand the GlassFish keystore, so I am modifying it incorrectly and the server throws security exceptions on startup). Does anyone have any experience doing so, and can you point me to a decent resource? Thanks for any help.

  I'm trying to uninstall Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 from my Windows 7 machine. Logged in as administrator, when I attempt to uninstall I get a messagebox stating "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." Excuse me? No I haven't. Immediately following, another messagebox displays: "You do not have sufficient access to uninstall Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. Please contact your system administrator." I didn't do anything unusual when installing or setting up the software. Just normal home use computer. Any ideas on how to remove this software?

• Force the computer to always use current display settings

  So I'm having a terrible black screen problem with my new installation of Windows 8. The screen basically goes to black every time I turn it on or sleep, or connect to an external or monitor. I dont really know what steps actually cause the problem and cant seem to figure what steps allow the screen to come back, besides forcing restarts, going to sleep and waking up, and smashing Win + P. I have a strong feeling it's because the Switchable graphics I have (Intel HD + Radeon 5060), so I'm looking for a way to make the computer always use a specified mode (i.e the current mode I'm on, that does show stuff on the screen) and force it to use it everytime? Any ideas? EDIT: I've Installed all the latest drivers I've found. Tried most of the solutions around the web for this problem. Updated the BIOS to UEFI (from HP Support Assistant), etc. Laptop is an HP- Envy 14

• Command window missing default 8x12 font

  Installation: Windows Server 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Service role When I logon locally my command window (cmd.exe) displays with default font that is 8x12. But when I logon remotely and open command window, it opens with the smallest possible font selection. Opening window properties and setting font size, the default 8x12 font is missing from the list. What should I do to get this font back in the list? Following screenshots show settings when logged on locally and remotely. • Restore data from overwritten LVM

  I lost all of my data (8 TB) which I collected over the past few years yesterday because I made some seriuos mistakes during the remounting of my LVM. I run a XenServer5.6 installation with additional 4 harddisks for data storage. An LVM over those 4 HDDs was used to store all of my data. Yesterday, I reinstalled XenServer and wanted to mount my old Harddrives and add the LVM. I run xe sr-create [...] for all disks (/dev/sdb .. /dev/sde), but that was totally wrong. This command deletes the old LVM on the disks and created an new, empty lvm on every single disk with no partitions. No i got 4 empty harddrives :( Is it possible to recover some data from that lost LVM volumes? I have no clue how to do it because i deleted all informations about the old LVM. Is there a way to access the files insed that old lvm directly?
