  • how to connect to server continuously using an bad internet connetion

    I have a bad Internet connection, it disconnects frequently and on reconnect, I'm assigned a different IP address by the ISP. The problem is that I connect to a remote VPS (Ubuntu), and when Internet connection is disrupted n reconnected, I can no longer do anything on the terminal. I have to restart the terminal and re-initiate the connection. Is there a way I can have persistent connection with server.

    I am able to ssh into my ubuntu server with a user name and password from the terminal. However, when I try to connect to the server using the same name and password via pgadmin, I am getting the following error: could not connect to server: Operation timed out Is the server running on host "xx.xxx.xx.xxx" and accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432? Why am I able to connect through terminal but not pgadmin?

Requirements: accessible to normal users accessible to root always loaded, not only for bash (gnome-terminal does not start a bash by default) to work on Ubuntu, Debian and optionally Red Hat great if addition could be easily scripted So far here is the no-list: /etc/profile.d/java.sh - not executed if you start a new console from gnome-terminal /etc/profile - same as above ~/.profile - current user only, also any solution assuming ~ would not be acceptable because home directory could be on NIS, and JAVA_HOME could be different.

    I recently changed my .bashrc and tweaked how my PS1 looks, but now it has a very wierd problem, before the end of the line in terminal (about 2 3rds of the way in) it jumps back to the begining of the line like so: e before itarcath@Highgate][~/.gconf/apps/gedit-2/preferences] how long can a command b My first though was was that it wasnt getting the terminal size properly but tput cols returns the correct value.     Assuming the components like *.dll's, *.ocx's installed and registered on the clients there exists the possibility to place the *.exe and some related files on the fileserver. To start the application there are links on the client's desktops which runs the \fileserver\AppPath\exe. Would you agree with such a layout? What if 'the client' is a terminal-server and 'the clients' means a terminal-server-farm?

    I am trying to implement winexit.scr in a windows terminal server. I want force logoff all "domain\domain users" from this server after 10 minutes through this. All these users along with domain admins login to this terminal server via Remote Desktop. I want to force logoff only for "domain\domain users" not for administrators and domain admin. I have tried the solutions provided in different sites..but it's logoff administrators also. Please help..thanks upfront.

    Emacs does not seem to respect the OS's key repeat rate. I'm using emacs in the terminal. I've set the repeat rate to as fast as possible by directly editing the settings in the following file (I restarted after making the change): open ~/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist The rest of the system observes the repeat rate. The terminal works as expected, as does vim. But, when I use emacs I still get the annoyingly slow repeat rate.

    How do I change the colors in a Cygwin mintty session which is already open? Is it possible? Use case: Under environment-imposed time constraints, multiple terminal windows have been opened without forethought. In order to reduce the risk of typing the commands for system A into the terminal for system B, it would be nice if they were different colors. Is there some escape sequence or whatnot that can change the color scheme for a running session?

  • How do you run the previous command in emacs shell?

    I am in terminal mode on Ubuntu, and I'm running emacs with 2 buffers open, one is a ruby file, and the other is a shell (opened by typing M-x shell ), and when I switch to the shell buffer, I want to run the same command that I ran before. I would normally just hit the up arrow in a terminal window, but in emacs, it simply puts the cursor up one line. Does anyone know of keystroke to run the previous shell command from within an emacs shell?

    I installed KeepassX on my new Mac which I am still learning the ropes on. I downloaded the program to allow autofill on Chrome ( KeePassHttp.plgx ). It says it needs to be put into directory of KeepassX, but I can't drag it into the application file and I'm not sure yet how to manipulate Terminal. Is terminal what I need to use or is there another way to put it in directory? At this point it is on the Chrome interface, but says it can't detect or make a connection with KX

    My Ubuntu 10.04 desktop has three versions of emacs: emacs-snapshot (client) emacs-snapshot (GTK) GNU Emacs 23 I mostly use emacs-snapshot, but I also use regular emacs in terminal mode emacs -nw. However, it is not clear to me what the difference is between the client and GTK versions of emacs-snapshot is, which one is launched by emacs-snapshot at the terminal, and if I should uninstall one or just ignore it.

    I ssh to a ubuntu sever, start a web project(Rails), then I can visit this project. I close the the ssh terminal, then the project says can not find files(view pages,css files and so on). I put the project in the home folder(/home/byht). why? When closing the ssh terminal, the user's folder can not be visited ? You know, when I put the project in another folder(/usr/local), everything goes well.

    I have a CentOS 6.2 server. Whenever some one logs into the server using the terminal (SSH) the user profile (.bash_profile) is loaded. Now my question is, is there a profile that loads whenever you use SFTP to login into the server via "FTP browsing software" ( I use WinSCP ), I want to send an email whenever a user logs into the server via SFTP.
