  Hi, does anyone have any thoughts on what would be considered good technicaly interviews for new php programmers. Im not meaning the little questions that are intended to know language specific intricacies but more on larger interview questions that potential employees may take an hour or 2 to solve in their own time and then come back with. Specifically im looking at PHP and object orientated but are there any ideas on suitable problems that a php programmer should be able to solve within a couple of hours? I am thinking that I want to have demonstrated object orientated techniques and also unit testing capabilities but as for that it can be anything.

• Gradle: Make a 3rd party jar available to local gradle repository

  Hi, currently, I'm testing Gradle as an alternative to Maven. In my projects, there are some 3rd party jars, which aren't available in any (Maven) repositories. My problem is now, how could I manage it to install these jars into my local .gradle repository. (If it's possible, I don't want to use the local Maven repository, because Gradle should run independently.) At the moment, I get a lot of exceptions because of missing jars. In Maven, it's quite simple by running the install command. However, my Google search for something similar to the Maven install command wasn't successful. Has anybody an idea? Thanks a million in advance.

  I am getting the following error on my page: Security Exception Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission please contact your system administrator or change the application's trust level in the configuration file. The problem is with the following code SmtpClient mailClient = new SmtpClient("smtp.gmail.com", 587); What's weird is that when testing it at my localhost, everything works fine, but when I put it on my 1and1 web host it generates the error above. I contacted their support and here's their answer. We do check the error logs and the operation require a FullTrust environment which currently fall under restriction on .NET Framewor k What should I do?

• Python: Why is IDLE so slow?

  Hi, IDLE is my favorite Python editor. It offers very nice and intuitive Python shell which is extremely useful for unit-testing and debugging, and a neat debugger. However, code executed under IDLE is insanely slow. By insanely I mean 3 orders of magnitude slow: bash time echo "for i in range(10000): print 'x'," | python Takes 0.052s, IDLE import datetime start=datetime.datetime.now() for i in range(10000): print 'x', end=datetime.datetime.now() print end-start Takes: >>> 0:01:44.853951 Which is roughly 2,000 times slower. The flow will be something like: Requirements are planned and detailed in RM Create work items in TFS connected to the Requirements in RM Create design and code using VS2010 and managing the version control in TFS Creating test plans and test cases in CQ (connected to requirements in RM) Run test against builds in TFS Publish test results in CQ against builds in TFS Run reports in RM, CQ and TFS that links up the items across the platforms. I have started looking at TFS Integration platform. But shall like to have your guidance for an early resolution and better solution approach.

  I'm having trouble with the MyClass::function(); style of calling methods and can't figure out why. Here's an example (I'm using Kohana framework btw): class Test_Core { public $var1 = "lots of testing"; public function output() { $print_out = $this->var1; echo $print_out; } } I try to use the following to call it, but it returns $var1 as undefined: Test::output() However, this works fine: $test = new Test(); $test->output(); I generally use this style of calling objects as opposed to the "new Class" style, but I can't figure out why it doesn't want to work.

• In CAB is a service it's own module?

  I'm learning Composite Application Block and I've hit a rock about services. I have my shell application in its own solution, and of course a test module in its own solution (developed and testing completely independent and external of the shell solution). If I created a service named "Sql Service", would I need to put this in it's own library, so that both the shell, and the module know the types? If that's the case, then for good practice, should I put the service project in the shell solution, or external just like a module (in it's own solution), even though it's not loaded as a module? Then, what about references? Should the shell reference this directly, add then add the service? Or load it as a module and add the service? I have a lot of confusion on where I should create my services, and if I should reference or load as modules..

• System.Net.WebProxy in .NET Client

  I don't yet have a good understanding of how the network is set up at my current client, but here is my issue. The vendor has a normal URL, but it might be a leased line. I have a .NET program that calls an external .asmx service. If I go to IE, Connections, LAN Settings, and uncheck "Automatic detect settings" and uncheck "Use Automatic Configuration Sript", then the .NET program runs and access the web service fine. But then, to access internet again from the browser, I have to re-check the two boxes, and so on throughout the day while we are testing and browsing. I'm hoping to put some code like this in the .NET program to avoid us having to constantly change: if (chkUseProxy.Checked) { myclient.Proxy = new System.Net.WebProxy(""); } I tried null and empty string and so far not able to connect without errors. Is this possible, and if so, what might be the correct parms for the constructor? Or are there other objects or properties that would need to be set? Thanks, Neal Walters

• IE browser problems occurring with Javascript Movable Type SignIn widget!

  i am using movable type 4.23 (publishing system) and have been testing my site on a PC and discovered that internet explorer (IE) browsers are unable to view my site due to a conflict in the javascript of the signin widget (initially i thought it was in the mt.js file). i receive this error: "Error 80004004"...as well as in the Javascript itself: "Element is not an object" (or object is not an element?)... function mtUpdateSignInWidget(u) { var el = document.getElementById('signin-widget-content'); if i put in "id" where 'sign-widget-content' goes, it will say its not an object. all other browsers work perfectly (firefox, safari and opera on my mac and firefox on pc). if anyone wants a link to the test page, i can provide that... someone please help! thanks.

I changed the security permission for the test.exe to "intranet". At the same time, I want to change lib.dll to "Internet" like this: (Because I want to do some testing for security.) • Authlogic Facebook Connect and cucumber

  I added the authlogic_facebook_connect plugin to my project and I'm now having problem running my cucumber test because of a NoMethodError. undefined method `set_facebook_session' for nil:NilClass (NoMethodError) In authlogic_facebook_connect/Session.rb the method "authenticating_with_facebook_connect?" is called as some sort of callback and the controller is defined but is missing the 'set_facebook_session' method. def authenticating_with_facebook_connect? controller.set_facebook_session attempted_record.nil? && errors.empty? && controller.facebook_session end I don't understand why the cucumber test is not loading the controller with this method. • Excanvas does not work in IE8 at all

  I simply cannot get excanvas to work at all. I have tried everything I can think of. I am even uploading the examples that come with excanvas to my website and testing them and they do not even work. I don't know if it has something to do with my server or what, but I haven't seen a working excanvas image yet. for instance...   Hi, I need to do migration date-timestamp with timezone similar to described here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1664627/migrating-oracle-date-columns-to-timestamp-with-timezone. But I need to make additional convertion (needed to work correctly with legacy apps): for all dates we need to change timezone to UTC and set time to 12:00 PM. So now dates are stored in local database (New York) timezone. I need to convert them this way 25/12/2009 09:12 AM (local timezone) in date column = 25/12/2009 12:00 PM UTC timestamp with local timezone column. Could you advice, how to set timezone for date value in Oracle (I found only suggestions how to convert from one timezone to another) (for example in Java there is setTimeZone method for Calendar objects). We want to make a convertion this way: rename old date column to NAME_BAK create new column timestamp with local timezone iterate over old column for not-null values set timezone to UTC, time to 12:00 PM drop old column after testing of this migration

  I am using an external library for Artificial Neural Networks in my project.. While testing the ANN, It gave me output of all NaN (not a number in C#) The ANN has 8 input , 5 hidden , 5 hidden , 2 output, and all activation layers are of Linear type , and it uses back-propagation, with learning rate 0.65 I used one testcase for training { -2.2, 1.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.1, 5, 3, -5 } ,{ -0.3, 0.2 } for 1000 epoch And I tested it on { 0.2, -0.2, 5.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0, 35, 0.0 } which gave { NaN , NaN} Note: this is one example of many that produces same case... I am trying to discover whether it is a bug in the library, or an illogical configuration.. The reasons I could think of for illogical configuration: All layers should not be linear Can not have descending size layers, i.e 8-5-5-2 is bad.. Only one testcase ? Values must be in range [0,1] or [-1,1] Is any of the above reasons could be the cause of error, or there are some constraints/rules that I do not know in ANN designing..? Note: I am newbie in ANN

  Hello again. I'm in the process of designing and testing various ideas for an application whose main functionality will be to notify users of occurring events and offer them with a choice of actions for each. The standard choice would be to create a queue of events showing a popup in the taskbar with the events and actions, but I want this tool to be the less intrusive and disrupting as possible. What I'm after is a good book or papers on studies of how to maximize user productivity in these intrinsically disruptive scenarios (in other words, how to achieve the perfect degree of annoying-ness, not too much, not too little). The user is supposedly interested in these events, they subscribe to them and can choose the actions to perform on each. I prefer books and papers, but the usual StackOverflow wisdom is appreciated as well. I'm after things like: Don't use popups, use instead X Show popups at most 3 seconds Show them in the left corner Use color X because it improves readability and disrupts less That is, cognitive aspects of GUI design that would help users in such a scenario.

• Organizing a project that uses multiple languages?

  I am currently working on a project that has components in perl, .NET, C/C++, and Java. These components are inter-related, but are not tied to the same release schedule. Due to the very different build/testing environment requirements, lumping them all in to the same /bin /src /lib /etc /tests hierarchy is a bit unwieldy. What are some good organizational hierarchies to use in source control when dealing with a project of this nature? I am currently leaning towards each language having its own branch: repo/project1/perl/main/... repo/project1/.NET/main/... repo/project1/Java/main/... How would your recommended hierarchy change if they DID have a tied release schedule?

• SQL Server: avoiding hard coding of database name in cross-database views

  So, lets say you have two SQL Server Databases on the same server that reference each others tables in their Views, Functions and Stored Procedures. You know, things like this: use database_foo create view spaghetti as select f.col1, c.col2 from fusilli f inner join database_bar.dbo.conchigli c on f.id = c.id (I know that cross-database views are not very good practice, but lets just say you're stuck with it) Are there any good techniques to avoid 'hard coding' the database names? (So that should you need to occasionally re-point to a different database - for testing perhaps - you don't need to edit loads of views, fns, sps) I'm interested in SQL 2005 or SQL 2008 solutions.   I currently do a query which goes through the records and forms an array. the print_r on query gives me this print_r($query) yields the following: Array ( [0] = ( [field1] = COMPLETE [field2] = UNKNOWN [field3] = Test comment ) [1] = ( [field1] = COMPLETE [field2] = UNKNOWN [field3] = comment here ) [2] = ( [field1] = COMPLETE [field2] = UNKNOWN [field3] = checking ) [3] = ( [field1] = COMPLETE [field2] = UNKNOWN [field3] = testing ) [4] = ( [field1] = COMPLETE [field2] = UNKNOWN [field3] = working ) ) somehow I want to take this array and convert it back to php. So for example some thing like this $myArray = array( ...) then $myArray should yield the samething as the print_r($query) yeilds. Thanks

• UIImagePickerController camera preview is portrait in landscape app

  In my landscape-only iPhone application, I launch a UIImagePickerController to take a photo, but the live image displayed from the camera is in portrait orientation, with blank space around it. The image is rotated. Once the camera button is pressed, the preview is very messy, with most of the preview off screen, and views not correctly aligned. Apple has acknowledged that this is defect, and is working on it. My question is, does anyone have a work-around (legal or illegal) that would allow me to get this working now. I wouldn't release to the App Store with an illegal fix, but I would have a much better app for user testing - currently the camera is pretty much unusable in landscape. I will attach a simple test project and images if I can. Edit - just to clarify, the image I get is correctly landscape. I want the camera & preview UIs to look right!

• JQuery - Ajax saving sortables in connected lists when sortable item is moved

  I have multiple JQuery sortable lists that connect with each other... They allow you to assign users to certain roles. Basically what I want to do is when a user is dragged from one list to another, I want JQuery to pick up the first list that the user was moved from so that I can send an AJAX request to delete it from that list in my database. I tried the following but every time you move the user over a list and haven't even dropped it within a list, it sends this request which means I'll be sending multiple AJAX requests... Does that make sense? $( ".selector" ).sortable({ out: function(event, ui) { ... } }); From my testing, I can use the following code to just update the list that user has been moved to so I've got the second half covered: $( ".selector" ).sortable({ receive: function(event, ui) { ... } }); Hopefully I am making sense :)

• Getting 401 on Twitter OAuth POST requests

  I am trying to use Twitter OAuth and my POST requests are failing with a 401 (Invalid OAuth Request) error. For example, if I want to post a new status update, I am sending a HTTP POST request to https://twitter.com/statuses/update.json with the following parameters - status=Testing&oauth_version=1.0&oauth_token=xxx& oauth_nonce=xxx&oauth_timestamp=xxx&oauth_signature=xxx& oauth_consumer_key=xxx&in_reply_to=xxx&oauth_signature_method=HMAC-SHA1` My GET requests are all working fine. I can see on the mailing lists that a lot of people have had identical problems but I could not find a solution anywhere. I am using the oauth.py Python library.
