  I've used the following code to map https://live.example.com on to http://example.com/api Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} =on RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^live\.example\.com [NC] RewriteRule (.+)$ "http://example.com/api/$1" [L,P] The following url: https://live.example.com/userlinks/xml/John%20James/MvPjeUTo15/ Is suppose to map onto: http://example.com/api/userlinks/xml/John%20James/MvPjeUTo15/ Instead it maps it to: http://example.com/api/userlinks/xml/John So it seems to cut it at the space. I am using the Codeigniter framework but I am not sure if the problem lies there. Also using %20 or just a space in the url bar produces no different results. The word 'longitude' is referenced in 20 different places.   For the sake of the question, by 'shareware' I mean a software which is relatively small in size (up to few dozens of mb) and available for download and evaluation through a web site. I'm asking this question, because I don't understand something regarding the current state of windows commercial desktop development. It seems to me that: There is no reliable statistic regarding the extent of windows systems with .Net Framework installed. It makes no sense to force the end user to install the 20-60mb .Net for an application which may be smaller. Applications conforms to the term 'shareware' above have a big share on the win os market. Much of them don't need the capabilities of low level languages like c++, and therefore ideally they should be developed with a RAD enviroment. So, One would suppose there will be a blossom of RAD enviroments for native win code. But I know about only one - Delphi, and Delphi is so unpopular. How is that?

  Hey all, I'm converting an xls 2 csv with a system(command) in ruby. After the conversion i'm processing this csv files. But the conversion is still going when the program wants to process the files. So at that time they are non existant. Can someone tell me if it's possible to let Ruby wait the right amount of time for the system command to finish? Right now i'm using sleep 20 but if it will take longer once, it isn't right of course... Thanks!

• Safe to KILL a mysql process REPLACEing records in a large myisam table?

  I have a REPLACE query running for a few days now on a few MyISAM tables, the largest having 20+million records. I need it to stop. It is, basically: REPLACE INTO really_large_table (a,b,c,d) SELECT e,f,g,h FROM big_table INNER JOIN huge_table ON big_table.x LIKE CONCAT('%', huge_table.y, '%'); I need to KILL it, and I am worried that I may corrupt really_large_table. Because the sub-query itself takes a significant amount of time, the REPLACEing probably occurs (relatively) infrequently; if this is true, does this make it less likely for the data to become corrupted?   Hi, I've just started my first real programming job and am pleased to discover that this is exactly what I want to do for the rest of my life. When it comes round to ~1 hour before it's time to go home and I think "Man, do I have to go home already?" I'd say that's A Good Thing(tm). One thing I've discovered though is that it takes a little while for my brain to get "in gear" or "in the Zone", so I'm curious what other folks do to get programming at their prime. My current flow is when I get here I visit SO and look at the interesting problems - I find it helps get my brain moving. After 20-30 minutes I start looking at my code/specs/etc to decide what I want/need to work on first. So how do you get started?

  I have a Web application (Flex 4 - Spring Blaze DS - Spring 3.0) which sends out an JMS event to a batch application (Standalone java) I am using JMS infrastrucure provided by Spring (spring JmsTemplate,SimpleMessageListenerContainer,MessageListenerAdapter) with TIBCO EMS. Is there any way by which we can notify a web user once message processing is completed by listener. One of the way to send a response event which will be listened by web application; but how to address following scenario: User1 click on submit - which in turn sends a JMS message Listener on receiving message processes the message (message processing may take 20-30 mins to complete). Listener application sends out another JMS event "Process_complete" As this is a web application; there are n users currently logged into the application. so how to identify a correct user / what if user is already logged off? Is there any way to handle this? Please post your views.

• Is it practical to learn and use Forth?

  When I was still a young developer, I started to focus on the many available programming languages. But in 1980 to 1990 there weren't many freely available compilers. So I started with several BASIC dialects for home computers, Pascal and C on my PC, I did an exam in COBOL and dabbled a bit in Assembly and a few other languages. And at one point I took a short look at Forth. That's over 20 years ago and I've learned a lot ever since. I know that Forth is still used these days. It's still a good programming language but since I focus mostly on Windows development, I just wonder if knowing Forth could be helpful for future projects of mine. So, would it be practical for an experienced developer to learn more about Forth?

Although I was able to PPTP VPN in on 321.321.39.10 (interface) which is the outside interface IP address. and it is static mapped to 172.21.37.20. So I'm thinking there must be something wrong with NAT somewhere? no response from 321.321.39.11 to 321.321.39.14.. Could anyone look over the config and please let me know what I've done wrong? Is there something I've missed? well obviously but.. please help! Thank you.

  I am having trouble with an assertQuery(). In the html I have (verified by outputting the body) <input type="text" name="LASTNAME" id="LASTNAME" value="" maxlength="25" size="20" /> So I wrote a query for it to test to make sure this element exists and that the value is empty $this->assertQuery('input#LASTNAME[value=""]', 1); PhpUnit says the assertion fails Failed asserting node DENOTED BY input#LASTNAME[value=""] EXISTS Can you give me some insight into why this assertion fails and how to write it properly? • What is faster? Drawing or Compositing?

  I make extensive use of -drawRect: to do some nice animations. A timer tries to fire 30 times per second with -setNeedsDisplay, but it feels like just 20 times. Also I can't use -setNeedsDisplayInRect: because the animation covers the entire thing. Would it help to take some of those drawing operations out of -drawRect: and move them to a subview? -drawRect has to do less then, but instead the OS will have more work with compositing views. Is there a rule of thumb which one is more worse? I remember from an apple text that they claimed Core Animation doesn't redraw during animation. So is that their secret of speed? Using subviews in animations?

• Disable system sleep during long builds

  From time to time I need to run a full build of the entire tool chain for our software on my development machine. To save on power my I've got my dev machine set to go sleep after 20 minutes of inactivity. Building the full tool chain can take up to an hour and I'll often just go to lunch. However, if I forget to disable sleep I can return to a sleeping machine with the build only partially complete. What I'm looking for is a way to automatically disable sleep while MSBuild is running. Does anyone know of a simple way of doing this?

• Dojo slider: update value dynamically

  I am building an application where the user browses certain objects by scrolling and zooming. To change the zoom level I have successfully implemented a "dijit.form.HorizontalSlider" object. Every time the user changes the position of the silder, I can catch the "onChange" call and do something with that. However, the user can also zoom-in by double clicking inside the view zone, at which point the slider should change position automatically to reflect the new zoom level. My question is the following: what function or method should I call in my javascript to update the position of a dojo silder ?   I saw an interesting post sometime back but with no solution. Trying luck here: There is a table which contain 10 names (U1, U2, U3..and so on). I have to choose 5 names everyday, and display one as the Editor and 4 as Contributors While selecting the random names, I have to also consider that if one user is selected as Editor, he cannot become editor again till everyone got their chance. • SQL query duration is longer for smaller dataset?

  I received reports that a my report generating application was not working. After my initial investigation, I found that the SQL transaction was timing out. I'm mystified as to why the query for a smaller selection of items would take so much longer to return results. Quick query (averages 4 seconds to return): SELECT * FROM Payroll WHERE LINEDATE >= '04-17-2010'AND LINEDATE <= '04-24-2010' ORDER BY 'EMPLYEE_NUM' ASC, 'OP_CODE' ASC, 'LINEDATE' ASC Long query (averages 1 minute 20 seconds to return): SELECT * FROM Payroll WHERE LINEDATE >= '04-18-2010'AND LINEDATE <= '04-24-2010' ORDER BY 'EMPLYEE_NUM' ASC, 'OP_CODE' ASC, 'LINEDATE' ASC I could simply increase the timeout on the SqlCommand, but it doesn't change the fact the query is taking longer than it should. Why would requesting a subset of the items take longer than the query that returns more data? How can I optimize this query?

  I have a gps device that records data e.g. datetime, latitude, longitude I have an sdk that reads the data from the device. The way the data is read: A command packet (basically a combination of int values in a struct) is sent to the device. The device responds with the data in fixed size chunks e.g. 64bytes Depending on the command issued I will get back differect data structs e.g. sending command 1 to the device returns a struct like struct x { id int, name char[20] } command 2 returns a collection of the following structs (basically it boils down to an array of the structs - y[12]) struct y { date datetime, lat decimal, lon decimal } I would then want to convert the struct to a class and save the data to a database. What would be the best way to encapsulate the entire process, preferably using some established design pattern? Many thanks M

• .net - how to connect windows service with systray application

  I have a windows service that do something periodically. on user account runs systray application (written in C#) that communicate with windows service (thru .net remoting) and shows a status and some option to users. Everything works well beside that systray app uses 20-30MB of RAM ! it have to work in terminal environment, when 50 users login, only systray apps take 1GB of RAM ! and i don't have to add, that's wrong :) Is it possible to write .net systray application that will be small ? (1-2MB max?) or should I write it in c/c++? then, what kind of communication should I use between windows service (written in C#) and systray app ?

Here are some example points on how I want the curve to look like. f(1) = 1 f(1.5)= .98 f(2) = .95 f(2.5) = .9 f(3) = .8 f(4) = .7 f(5) = .6 f(10) = .5 f(20) = .25 Notice that as the input gets higher, the percentage decreases rapidly. Is there any way to model a function that has a very smooth and accurate curve that says this? Another way to say it is by using a real example. You know in Diablo II they have Magic Find? There are diminishing returns for magic find. If you get 100%, the real magic find is still 100%. But the more get, your actual magic find goes down. So much that say if you had 1200, your real magic find is probably 450%. So they have a function like: actualMagicFind(magicFind) = // some way to reduced magic find
