On VirtualBox Guest OS “Could not initialize GLX"

I have a remote build-machine with Jenkins and I'm trying to run GUI application. In Jenkins I installed Xvnc plugin, which uses TightVNC Server, but each build has failed. Earlier, there was a problem with loading driver swrast (by libGL), currently in the log there is this line: [Error] Could not initialize GLX Remote desktop is Ubuntu 14.04 running over VirtualBox, so I installed VBoxAddons but it didn't resolve the problem. iPad and User Assistance

What possibilities does the iPad over for user assistance in the enterprise space? We will research the possibilities but I can see a number of possibilities already for remote workers who need access to trouble-shooting information on-site, implementers who need reference information and diagrams, business analysts or technical users accessing reports and dashboards for metrics or issues, functional users who need org charts and other data visualizations, and so on. It could also open up more possibilities for collaborative problem solving. User assistance content can take advantage of the device's superb display, graphics capability, connectivity, and long battery life. The possibility of opening up more innovative user assistance solutions (such as comics) is an exciting one for everyone in the UX space. Aligned to this possibility we need to research how users would use the device as they work.

Problem while installing amd driver on ubuntu 12.10 on my dell inspiron 5520

I have a dell inspiron 5520 which has switchable graphics mode with amd radeon hd 7600m. I have recently installed ubuntu 12.10 alongside windows. But i can't install the driver for grahics card. While typing "sudo apt-get install fglrx-installer" it says unable to locate the package. While adding the repository ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates it shows error that "The requested URL /ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu/dists/quantal/main/binary- i386/Packages was not found on this server." In another attempt i download driver from amd-driver site, and then installing from terminal it shows that some errors come while installing and I get the blank screen only. So how to install the amd driver on my laptop.

12.04 Black screen with blinking cursor

I have read this post My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it? UBUNTU 12.04 works well with livecd but fails to start after complete installation, black screen with a blinking cursor. I tried holding shift key and edit grub options but holding shift did not do anything. I give up, any suggestion. I have built in intel graphics card and an nvidia card in PCI. I have tried by removing nvidia card as well. All I see is a black screen with a blinking cursor. My system is Dell optiplex GX260 with 1GB ram and 2.4 GHz P4 processor

Can't login, kde loads, then back to kdm

Hi @all (K)Ubuntu users, I installed Kubuntu 10.10 after it's realesing. (ordinary I use Ubuntu, but this time I want to try Kubuntu, too) Now I can't login in Kubuntu: When(/if) I login with mine username and password, KDE loads(I mean this splashscreen), but if it's ready nearly, the screen becomes dark and I'm back in the login-manager. I tried many things: With a new user or with installing gdm or install it new (two times!) Thank you for helping PS: Ubuntu works normal Sorry for my bad english ;-) EDIT: The text-console-mode(or however it's named in english) isn't working anytimes, seemes like a graphics bug or something similiar. And there aren't very many (hidden) ".folders", just .kde .config .dbus .fontconfig and some ".files".

Invisible mouse cursor

There have been some similar posts but nothing specific to me. Sometimes i boot my laptop and all is well. Other times I boot up and after the login screen my mouse cursor disappears, I can still use it, its just invisible. I start up fire fox and the cursor is visible but only on the application window.... My sysetem is: samsung R60 Plus, with 4gb ram and a T7500, using the ati Xpress 1250 graphics. This is with Ubuntu 11.10. Does any one know of a work around? Many thanks Rob,

overheating when using flash

I am having overheating issues when watching flash videos. Here is all the relevant information that I could think of. Please help. --Often when playing flash videos it operates at 95 degrees C. --Only gets that hot when on full screen (but still in the 80s otherwise) --Sometimes reaches 100 degrees and shuts down. --fan runs at around 4500 RPM when hot (not to mention I can here it speed up) --Happens under Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10 (did not use Ubuntu before then) --Overheating happens on more than one site (for example youtube and Comedy Central) --My computer does not overheat otherwise. --Usually runs around 50-60 degrees C. --Maybe if compiling or doing updates can it get to 70 or 75 degree C. --Have a dual boot, and under Windows I do not have this issue. --I use firefox, but have the same issue if using Chrome --I have a Lenovo T410, currently running Ubuntu 12.10 --Intel® Core™ i5 CPU M 540 @ 2.53GHz × 4 --4 GB of memory, 64 bit OS --Graphics: NVS 3100M/PCIe/SSE2 Thanks and let me know if you need more info, Ben

Error occurs during startup of Ubuntu Installation. Sometimes I'll get to the Welcome screen just like this, the screen will just glitch out, or will simply freeze during the loading icon. nvidia GTS 250 Intel Core i7 920 9 GB Memory I was able to install 12.04.1, but after performing upgrade to 12.10 it get the same problem on startup; glitches in graphics, missing content etc. Also noticed after the upgrade, I'm no longer able to connect to internet; neither ethernet or wifi.

Why do you need float/double?

I was watching http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2011/06/27.html and laughed at Jon Skeet joke about 0.3 not being 0.3. I personally never had problems with floats/decimals/doubles but then I remember I learned 6502 very early and never needed floats in most of my programs. The only time I used it was for graphics and math where inaccurate numbers were ok and the output was for the screen and not to be stored (in a db, file) or dependent on. My question is, where are places were you typically use floats/decimals/double? So I know to watch out for these gotchas. With money I use longs and store values by the cent, for speed of an object in a game I add ints and divide (or bitshift) the value to know if I need to move a pixel or not. (I made object move in the 6502 days, we had no divide nor floats but had shifts). So I was mostly curious.

Teamwork 101 for the solo newbie

Forgive my newbishness but I have a question to ask about teamwork...mainly because I stink at it. Most of my projects up until this point have been solo so I have a very limited experience with teamwork. I did make graphics for a game that was being developed by several people, but that was completely different than programming with several different people. Right now I'm working with someone else on an indie MMO along with a few other team members. I've already made some pretty stupid mistakes, (like rewriting EVERYTHING) so I have two questions for you guys: 1) What are some of the most common mistakes that people make in a team environment and how can they be avoided? 2) How can the structure of your program be altered to allow for multiple teams members to work on different parts of the program at the same time? P.S. Is this the right stack exchange site for this type of question? (if not, where does it go? Thanks)

Found a good tool for jQuery Coding – jQueryPad

Just found a good (looks like) tool for jQuery coding and debugging from the appinn.com (Chinese) named jQueryPad by Paul Stovell. With it we don’t need to switch between the visual studio and the browser when coding and debugging. There’s only one main screen where we can type the HTML and jQuery code and just press F5 to see the result in the bottom frame. .NET Frameworks 3.5 is required. Hope this helps. C++ Game Library for SVG Based Game

I'm looking into building a cross-platform opensource 2D RPG style game engine for ChaiScript. I want to be able to do all of the graphics with SVG and need joystick input. I also need the libraries I use to be opensource and compatible with the BSD license. I'm familiar with allegro, ClanLib, and SDL. As far as I can tell, none of these libraries have built in or obvious integration for SVG. Also, I'm aware of the previous conversations on this site regarding Qt for SVG game development. I'm hoping to avoid Qt because of the size and complexity of making it a requirement. Also, Qt does not seem to have joystick input support, which would require that SDL or some other library also be used. So my question can be summed up as this: What is the best way to get SVG and joystick support in a 2D C++ library while minimizing dependencies as much as possible (preferably avoiding Qt altogether)?

AMD E1-1200 Slow?

I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 32bit with Gnome 3 on a Toshiba 850D-104 for a friend of mine. This friend only surfs the web, checks for emails and plays online flash games a lot I was chocked to see that the laptop was rather sluggish. I mean you get what you pay for, with this kind of processor (AMD E1-1200, dual-core 1.4Ghz), but it's a bit too much! It takes 10 seconds to just open up Chromium (1 tab!) not to mention when he plays a flash-game it's stuttery and becomes unplayable. What can I do? I already tried Lubuntu, but it's not that much faster. I checked the resources and the ram is only 300Mb from the 6Gig installed? The Graphics card is a AMD HD Radeon 7310 (and the FGLRX-driver is installed) Any solutions for a sluggish Flash experience on Ubuntu? Thanks

I have googled and found out to add these options to play them link from where I got help But they are playing fine only in SMplayer. I want to configure similarly and play those files in VLC player. DVD not detected?

As i insert a DVD in my drive (on a laptop) using Kubuntu 12.04, the DVD is not detected. The drive takes the DVD, I can hear it munching on it for a while, and then nothing. Even ejecting the DVD becomes a hassle, I need to do that at boot time otherwise the OS won't allow me to eject. Kubuntu 12.04 used to read and mount the same DVDs just fine a week ago. Edit: since I am able to boot from CD, can I safely assume the issue is not a hardware issue? Jupiter in Ubuntu 13.10 (Laptop Overheating)

I was wondering if Jupiter (Interface for display, power and device control) will work in Ubuntu 13.10, because my laptop (Toshiba Satellite C855D, AMD A6-4400M with Radeon HD Graphics running Ubuntu 13.04 x64) keeps overheating, I tried some other tools, like laptop-mode-tools or TLP, none of those work, not at all. Jupiter was the only option and it's supposedly discontinued, the version I'm using is being maintained by JoliCloud team, but they told me they're not sure if it will work with 13.10... If it doesn't work, I'm definitely not upgrading, since overheating is a major issue for me... Thanks in advance!

Enabling "AllowDualLinkModes" in xorg.conf

I'm using a GeForce GT 620 (which is dual-link compatable) and a DVI-I dual-link splitter to try to have a desktop extended onto two monitors. At the moment when I plug in the monitors, only the monitor on the female VGA marked "1" gets a signal, and the other screen gets nothing and only one screen is detected by nvidia-settings. After reading around, I have realised that my graphics card probably comes with dual-link disabled by default, and I can enable it by adding an "AllowDualLinkModes" option to my xorg.conf. This is the current state of my xorg.conf Section "Device" Identifier "Default Device" Option "NoLogo" "True" EndSection Where do I put the line about AllowDualLinkModes? Do I create a new Section? Can't boot into ubuntu, black screen after grub menu

Ubuntu is not booting properly for me anymore. The grub menu comes up, and whether I choose a linux recovery mode or the normal one I get a black screen after a few seconds. There is a brief message about vga=791 being deprecated, but I am not able to read it fully because the black screen covers it up almost immediately. I have googled for hours for solutions, and most people seem able to solve similar problems by editing in grub and adding nomodeset into the line starting with linux /boot... but this solution is not working for me, I still don't get any GUI. Sometimes I am able to get the dmesg rolling past, I think it was when I removed quiet splash from that line, but still no GUI - the computer seems to be on and working because it responds to a ctrl-alt-del and reboots. I have tried with 3 different graphics cards (2 nVidia and 1 ATI) and swapping them doesn't seem to change the behaviour at all. What else can I try?

Is flash game development not considered 'proper' game development?

I've come across this a couple of times. That flash game development is not 'proper' game development when compared to XNA or even Unity. Mentioned here: Need guidelines for studying Game Development Also here in some comments : Where to start with game development? This judgement also befalls java, according to some. Is it because in flash its so easy to draw graphics and to import and add on to the stage any element we want and also because flash needs a 'container program' to run and others don't? But flash is by far way easier to 'distribute' than any other of those mentioned above. Maybe except for iphone or android games.

Implementation of Race Game Tree

I build a racing game right in OpenGL using Glut, and I'm a bit lost in all the details. First of all, any suggestions as a road map would be more than great. So far what I thought is this: Tree implementation for transformations. Simulated dynamics.(*) Octree implementation for collusion detection. Actual collusion detection.(*) Modelling in Maya and export them as .OBJs. Polishing the game with GLSL or something like that for graphics quality. (*): I am not sure the order of these two. So I started with the simulated dynamics without tree, and it turned out to be a huge chaos for me. Is there any way you can think of such that could help me to build such tree to use in racing game? How do I install an older 2.6.37 Kernel Version?

I have a Sony VAIO P netbook and for several issues (graphics driver, audio driver and power management), I want to install an older version of the Linux kernel on Ubuntu 11.10 (actually its Xubuntu) that seems to be much more suitable. So I searched for Ubuntu kernels and found this link which includes all versions of the Linux kernel distributed by Ubuntu. I am looking for a version before 2.6.38 (to escape the known power management issue) and of course solve my many driver problems! I guess my best bet is 2.6.37 but there are several 2.6.37.x-x kernels! Can someone point me to the right choice? In each folder (for example: this one) there are several DEB packages. Which packages should I install? (Note: I have a 32-bit system) What is the installation process? sudo dpkg -i *.deb ? Is this fine or additional steps are required? Thanks.
