  • Lightweight open source CMS - current situation

    Hello, It happened that I need to pick up PHP based open source CMS. I did a small research and found many candidates. CMS made simple seems to be right choice, but I am not sure what's the current state, I know it was widely used time ago. I need it to be fully compliant with web standarts, lightweight (especially interface). It needs to be as simple as possible - basically just style and page content editing (news, maybe some image gallery) is enough. Sure content and style have to be separated from each other since content will be edited by non-programmer. One of the main goals is SEO so I'd like it to have friendly URLs. I think CMSes like Joomla, Drupal and Wordpress are too big for this project. Are there any recommendations ?

  • Image Replacement (JS/JQuery) working in IE but not FF

    I have tried multiple solutions for replacing broken images (both JS & jQuery) and all work perfectly with IE but not in FF, is there a reason for this? Are images handled differently in FF that may cause this? JQuery Example: $("img").error(function(){ $(this).unbind("error").attr("src", "nopic.jpg"); }); Javascript Example: (triggered by onError event in img tag) function noimage(img){ img.onerror=""; img.src="nopic.jpg"; return true; } Both of these examples work perfectly in IE but not at all in FF.   • Can an iframe pop up a Lightbox-style box?

    Hi. This question isn't about popping up an iframe inside a Lightbox; rather, it's about an iframe on a page that can launch its own Lightbox-style box in the page that contains that iframe. I'm thinking this can't be possible, because the iframe contains the contents of the other URL and whatever Lightbox that URL launches has to fit within the iframe. Thanks.

    I have to create a bunch of these "Share this on" Technorati, Digg, Facebook, Reddit, del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, MySpace and so on. It is very easy to find online icons for this task, but it is a little more difficult to find what URLs I should link. Is there any updated list of all these services? Of course I could copy them from other sites having this, but I am not sure they are updated, and moreover maybe there is some GET parameter I want to set differently.

  • How do you plan for starting a new web system?

    I've been creating more and more systems recently and I find more and more planning and preparation I do before starting the project. I determine what libraries or frameworks I will be using, what languages, the basic architecture of how the site will flow, etc. I've also heard of other design processes such as hanging styrofoam balls to show where classes are and how they relate, which is a process I've never heard of nor do I know how it works. Is there any software that helps with this process? Are there any guidelines or steps or do you have a recommended set of steps or guidelines that you follow when designing a new project?

  • How to handle javascript & css files across a site?

    Hi everybody, I have had some thoughts recently on how to handle shared javascript and css files across a web application. In a current web application that I am working on, I got quite a large number of different javascripts and css files that are placed in an folder on the server. Some of the files are reused, while others are not. In a production site, it's quite stupid to have a high number of HTTP requests and many kilobytes of unnecessary javascript and redundant css being loaded. The solution to that is of course to create one big bundled file per page that only contains the necessary information, which then is minimized and sent compressed (GZIP) to the client. There's no worries to create a bundle of javascript files and minimize them manually if you were going to do it once, but since the app is continuously maintained and things do change and develop, it quite soon becomes a headache to do this manually while pushing out new updates that features changes to javascripts and/or css files to production. What's a good approach to handle this? How do you handle this in your application?

    Could you confirm I understand this correctly. Using POST, the file specified in xmlhttp.open("GET","ajax_test.asp",true); will not be cached (sent to \Temporary Internet Files) ? It will stay on the server only? If this is true, is the updated html file after calling ajax POST, being updated in the \Temporary Internet Files ? Am I missing any other important information of this mechanism? Thank You.

  • why does django-registration use an "activation window" for activating accounts?

    i'm using django-registration, which is a django lib that helps with users registering on a django-built website. All well and dandy, except that it insists i have an "activation email" associated with all new users. It defaults to a 7 day window, after which, if someone signed up (and we then sent an email to confirm their email address) but didn't click on the link in the sent email within the 7 days, then they cannot sign up. Instead, they need to do the whole process all over again. I'm sure this is a concept that exists generally in web design, because why would django-registration make its own arbitrary signup process up? Anyway, the question is why? What do i gain by having the peace of mind knowing that all the users of my site are the kind of go-getters that click on registration emails with 7 days of receiving them? Why should i sleep easier knowing that my database isn't filled with users who, for whatever reason, clicked through to sign up but didn't actually want to sign up? cheers!

    Hi folks, I'm thinking of adding a reputation system to a web application, the site is already being used so I'm trying to be careful about my choices. I'm developing in Django/Python, thought this would be important. Reputation is generated in all actions that contribute to the site, similar to Stackoverflow's system. I know there are literally millions of ways of implementing this, and this is why I feel quite lost. Two alternatives I am not sure about are: Keep track of reasons why reputation was incremented Ignore reasons in order to reduce complexity of the site and overhead Would be happy with a few pointers, and directions. Would be very much appreciated!

    Hi everyone, I've already asked this question, but it's still too unclear to me, and it seems people haven't understood what I'm trying to do, so I'll try and be clearer. This website: https://www4.polymtl.ca/poly/poly.html is the website I want to fill. What I would like to be able to do, is modify the values of the "nip", "code", and "naissance" fields with text (for example, code being "majuif"). <input type=password name=code size=8 maxlength=8> <input type=password name=nip size=8 maxlength=8> <input type=password name=naissance size=8 maxlength=8> However, I don't know how to do that. And this is my problem. Should I write another HTML file - I don't know if the word "macro" can be used for that, but I'm pretty sure it can - and insert JavaScript in it?     Hi Community, I've only written a few small php web apps and I'm throwing code together right now to allow for users to submit short stories. these stories will display and allow others to vote them up. The winner receives something rather valuable and I'm paranoid people are going to try to manipulate it. Debian / Apache / PHP 5.2 / jquery users are not required to login / authenticate. users can vote multiple stories up but only once for each story Is it as simple as tagging each story with an IP address and not counting other submissions from that IP?   • Passing XML data and user from coldfusion page to .NET page

    I'd appreciate some input on this situation, I can't figure out the best way to do this. I have some data that's being prepared for me in a ColdFusion app and in an IFrame within the CF app we want to display some graphs (not strictly an image, it's an entire page) being generated on the .NET side of things. I'd like to pass XML data from the CF side to .NET as well as the user. On the .NET side I'm putting the data in a session so the user can sift through it without the need to have it re-queried and re-passed from CF. What I've tried: Generating XML with CF, putting it in a hidden form field, auto-submitting (with JS) a the form to the .NET side. The issue I'm having with this approach is the encoding being done on the form post. The data has entries like <entry data="hello &amp; goodbye">. It's an issue because it's being URL encdeded, Posted, and when I get it on the .NET side I get <entry data="hello & goodbye"> which isn't properly formed XML. What I'd like to avoid: An intermediary DB approach (dropping the data in a DB on CF, picking it up with .NET) I'd like to only display what is passed to the page. I have security concerns with the data, it's very sensitive. Passing the data to a webservice, returning a GUID, forwarding the user with a URL Parameter to access the passed in data. I think that'd be risky if someone happened on a link to that data. I can't take that risk. I was thinking of passing the data with JSON, but I'm very unfamiliar with it. Thoughts?     What are the reasons for and against a game object drawing and updating itself? For example, if you have a game where the player has a position on screen, why not have an all-encompassing class: public class Player { private int x, y, xVelocity, yVelocity; private Sprite s; //... public Player() { // load the sprite here, somehow? } public void draw(CustomGraphicsClass g) { g.draw(s, x, y); } public void update(long timeElapsed) { x += (xVelocity * timeElapsed); y += (yVelocity * timeElapsed); } } What is wrong with this design? What are the downfalls or concerns? How would you better write something like this, or better architect this type of thing in a game? Also, somewhat connected, how would you implement loading that Sprite image? And furthermore, how would you then implement collision between two Players? (I should probably separate these extra two questions into new questions, huh?)

  • getting the url of the page and the url of the selected hyperlink

    Hi This is pretty hard to explain but i'll give it a shot. Working with Safari to create an extension as is now possible with Safari 5 - how would I go about getting the URL of the current page with using JavaScript and the Safari API? I would also like to be able to get a hyperlink that is selected. For instance in Safari when you right click on a hyperlink and it says open in a new tab, open in a window etc - clicking opens that hyperlink. What part of the API is used to get access to the link itself, and how does it know its a link in the first place? I hope thats clear enough. Thanks
