• Upgrading specific pieces of KDE 4.x

  So this is going to be one of those "is this even possible?" questions. I need to upgrade a piece of my KDE from 4.8.5 to 4.9. Specifically, I need to upgrade Gwenview from the 2.85 version in KDE 4.8.5 to 2.9 version in KDE 4.9. It seems trivial but it's actually a fairly big deal for me. I recently upgraded my Ubuntu to 12.04, and that upgraded my Gwenview to 2.8x. The issue is that the Gwenview 2.8 releases accidentally broke a feature that I rely upon very heavily. It's a known bug that was corrected in 2.9. Unfortunately, the only package available in Synaptic is 4.8.5, which contains Gwenview 2.85. To make matters worse I'm not sure that I can simply take my whole KDE to 4.9 as I am running an older Toshiba Satellite with the Intel 945GMA chipset that I was shocked managed to hold up under the weight of 12.04 as it is. Well, actually it didn't. I had to install Cairo Dock as Unity 2D was hopeless with this chipset. But anyway, I desperately need to get to Gwenview 2.9 without the potential system-wide implosion of upgrading KDE to 4.9. Possible?

• Skype sounds sizzle/distorted/bad

  I have the same problem as described in the questions skype notification sounds sizzled and bad sound on login to skype. But it is not only the login, notification, but also when talking to somebody. I tried the solution to remove/re-install skype and most of the solutions in this questions, e.g. checking mixer, sound settings and installing alsa-hda-dkms (incl. system restart). After installing skype (and even after upgrade to skype 4.0) in Ubuntu 12.04 (AMD 64) there was no sound at all. They’ve rolled out a new Release Candidate update that includes Android 2.3 and a host of performance tweaks. First thing to note is that this is an RC and if you upgrade from CyanogenMod 6 to CyanogenMod 7 RC you’ll be trading a little bit of stability and a few features that haven’t made the jump from 6 to 7 in return for the newest features of Android 2.3.   The Nordics OTN ACE Tour 2013 with stops in Stockholm, Ballerup/Copenhagen and Oslo is over. A very intense week with plenty of excellent presentations from Lonneke Dikmans, Sten Vesterli, Tim Hall and others. I'm always impressed how much those people know and how good they present. It's such a great learning experience. And there's always some time to talk about weired things apart from the Oracle cosmos. So thanks a lot, folks - it was a pleasure to travel with you. And many many thanks also to the people from ORCAN, DOUG and OUGN. Everything worked out so well. And thanks for the great gifts. the dinners, everything!!! Of course a special thanks to all the people who went to my presentations. • Why do I always get this error when using 'apt-get' commands?

  I am using Ubuntu 14.04(with Unity). Just today(as of the date of this post) I did a sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade and at the end of the 'Upgrade' process I got the following error :- Setting up crossplatformui (1.0.38) ... * Stopping ACPI services... But whichever apt-get command I use does what it has to without fail.(For example I tried installing blender with sudo apt-get install blender and it installed fine though it showed the above error.) After this I even got a kernel update(from 3.13.0-27 to 3.13.0-29 via the Software Updater), but even now the issue persists. How do I solve this issue?

I fire up my app, and run into a ‘binding’ issue, that AzureReader2 was trying to use Microsoft.WindowsAzure.Storage, Version=2.1.0.0 but alas, it couldn’t find it. I am not the only one (see stackoverflow), and one solution is to run ‘Add-BindingRedirect’ from the Package Manager Console, but that didn’t solve the problem for me, as it didn’t pick up on the Azure stuff, so I resorted to adding the redirect manually. • xorg-edgers PPA with llvmpipe breaks AMD APU system

  I've read before where this had happened to another user with the same system... I was running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with Kernel 3.2.0.29 and decided to give xorg-edgers a try. I purged fglrx* and xorg* before beginning. I upgraded with sudo apt-get upgrade -d The system downloaded and installed 109MB worth of data to the system, including llvmpipe which I am very unfamiliar with, and Kernel 3.5.0.11. The system was then rebooted to finalize the upgrade. The system boots to a black screen and then tells me "The system is running in low-graphics mode". Did I miss a step in the install? Or do the newest open-source drivers just not work with my hardware? I realize this hardware (APU) is some of the newer development. I dropped to command via the fallback menu and attempted to boot lightdm as root, but the system hangs in 'Configuring kernel parameters' at Starting initializes zram swaping. ...and then it just sits there. The other thing that concerns me is the output at the top of the screen that says: could not write bytes: Broken pipe Does llvmpipe work for this type of system? To be clear the system is: MSI x370-206us Laptop Radeon HD 6320 AMD e450 APU 1.67ghz dual-core Any help would be much appreciated. Like I said, I'm pretty sure I followed the right order of operations for the install procedure, but I was curious if anyone with similar hardware had experienced anything similar.

  Hello!  Are you implementing using a third party or consulting resources?   Recently we have seen some cases where customers no longer have a windows installation.  After the initial install and configuration, once the instance has gone live, the windows install is either deleted or most likely no longer with the customer as the same was installed on the implementers' laptop to start with. As a result when support comes back requesting the customer to apply a patch and/or upgrade they do not have a windows installation.  This has started happening after Oracle Demantra gave them the option to configure the engine on Unix.  Workaround: It is advisable that the customer keep their Windows installation intact for further patching and/or upgrade.  It is aslo possible that the implementer had installed Demantra on his Windows box and you do not have access to it any more.  It is possible that with the web and engine on Unix, and the silent installer having downloaded all the executable for Business Modeler, to work on the User's client machine, you may no longer need the windows install. I have not tested the above

  Fans of the tiny Raspberry Pi will be pleased to hear the new version of their Model B board now ships with 512MB of RAM (up from the previous 256MB). The best part about the upgrade? The price point stays at $35 a board. From the official Raspberry Pi blog: One of the most common suggestions we’ve heard since launch is that we should produce a more expensive “Model C” version of Raspberry Pi with extra RAM. This would be useful for people who want to use the Pi as a general-purpose computer, with multiple large applications running concurrently, and would enable some interesting embedded use cases (particularly using Java) which are slightly too heavyweight to fit comfortably in 256MB. The downside of this suggestion for us is that we’re very attached to $35 as our highest price point. With this in mind, we’re pleased to announce that from today all Model B Raspberry Pis will ship with 512MB of RAM as standard. If you have an outstanding order with either distributor, you will receive the upgraded device in place of the 256MB version you ordered. • Flashback Database

  Flashback Database bezeichnet die Funktionalität der Oracle Datenbank, die Datenbank zeitlich auf einen bestimmten Punkt, respektive eine bestimmte System Change Number (SCN) zurücksetzen zu können - vergleichbar mit einem Rückspulknopf eines Kassettenrekorders oder der Rücksetztaste eines CD-Players. Mag dieses Vorgehen bei Produktivsystemen eher selten Einsatz finden, da beim Rücksetzten alle Daten nach dem zurückgesetzten Zeitpunkt verloren wären (es sei denn man würde dieser vorher exportieren), gibt es gerade für Test- oder Standby Systeme viele Einsatzmöglichkeiten: Rücksetzten des Systems bei fehlgeschlagenen Applikations-Upgrade Alternatives Point in Time Recovery (PITR) mit anschließendem Roll Forward (besonders geeignet bei Standby Systemen) Testdatenbank mit definiertem, reproduzierbaren Ausgangspunkt (z.B. für Real Application Testing) Datenbank Upgrade Test Einige bestehende Datenbank Funktionalitäten verwenden Flashback Database implizit: Snapshot Standby Reinstanziierung der Standby (z.B. bei Fast Start Failover) Obwohl diese Funktionalität gerade für Standby Systeme und Testsysteme bestens geeignet ist, gibt es eine gewisse Zurückhaltung Flashback Database einzusetzen. Eine Ursache ist oft die Angst vor zusätzlicher Last, die das Schreiben der Flashback Logs erzeugt, sowie der zusätzlich benötigte Plattenplatz. Dabei ist die Last im Normalfall relativ gering (ca. 5%) und auch der zusätzlich benötigte Platz für die Flashback Logs lässt sich relativ genau bestimmen. Ebenfalls wird häufig nicht beachtet, dass es auch ohne das explizite Einschalten der Flashback Logs möglich ist, einen garantieren Rücksetzpunkt (Guaranteed Restore Point kurz GRP) festzulegen, und die Datenbank dann auf diesen Restore Point zurückzusetzen. Das Setzen eines garantierten Rücksetzpunktes funktioniert in 11gR2 im laufenden Betrieb. Wie dies genau funktioniert, welche Unterschiede es zum generellen Einschalten von Flashback Logs gibt, wie man Flashback Database monitoren kann und was es sonst noch zu berücksichtigen gibt, damit beschäftigt sich dieser Tipp.
