• How should I describe the process of learning someone else's code? (In an invoicing situation.)

  I have a contract to upgrade some in-house software for a large company. The company has requested multiple feature additions and a few bug fixes. This is my first freelance style job. First, I needed to become familiar with how the application worked - I learnt it as if I was a user. Next, I had to learn how the software worked. I started with broad concepts, and then narrowed down into necessary detail before working on each bug fix and feature. At least at the start of the project, it took me a lot longer to learn the existing code than it did to write the additional features. How can I describe the process of learning the existing code on the invoice? (This part of the company usually does things in-house, so doesn't have much experience dealing with software contractors like me, and I fear they may not understand the overhead of learning someone else's code). I don't want to just tack the learning time onto the actual feature upgrade, because in some cases this would make a 'simple task' look like it took me way too long. I want break the invoice into relevant steps, and communicate that I'm charging for the large overhead of learning someone else's code before being able to add my own to it. Is there a standard way of describing this sort of activity when billing for a job?

• How (and when) to move users to mysqli and PDO_MYSQL?

  An important discussion on the PHP "internals" development mailing list is taking place. It's one that you should take some note of. It concerns the next step in transitioning PHP applications away from the very old mysql extension and towards adopting the much better mysqli extension or PDO_MYSQL driver for PDO. This would allow the mysql extension to, at some as-yet undetermined time in the future, be removed. Both mysqli and PDO_MYSQL have been around for many years, and have various advantages: http://php.net/manual/en/mysqlinfo.api.choosing.php The initial RFC for this next step is at https://wiki.php.net/rfc/mysql_deprecation I would expect the RFC to change substantially based on current discussion. The crux of that discussion is the timing of the next step of deprecation. There is also discussion of the carrot approach (showing users the benfits of moving), and stick approach (displaying warnings when the mysql extension is used). As always, there is a lot of guesswork going on as to what MySQL APIs are in current use by PHP applications, how those applications are deployed, and what their upgrade cycle is. This is where you can add your weight to the discussion - and also help by spreading the word to move to mysqli or PDO_MYSQL. • dpkg in uninterruptible sleep

  I have several Ubuntu servers 10.04. Today, I tried to upgrade some packages on one of these servers and the process got stuck. I logged in using another SSH session and I found that dpkg is in D state (uninterruptible sleep). According to what I have read, this state results generally from I/O waiting like waiting for NFS share. I can not understand why dpkg will block in this state. I can not see any obvious problems other than this. Here is the output of ps to show the blocking process: $ ps axo pid,cmd,s,wchan | grep dpkg 22571 /usr/bin/dpkg --status-fd 2 D call_rwsem_down_read_failed This process can not be killed even with kill -9. So, I will not be able to install/upgrade any package unless I reboot the server. What makes it worse is that the remote reboot does not succeed in such a case (having processes in D state). Can anyone help with this? How can I avoid this in the future.

• Oh snap! My RPi was upgraded to 512MB! Woo-hoo!

  I ordered a Raspberry Pi Model B (256MB) over 4 months ago on backorder. When it finally came I saw it was upgraded to the new half a gig model! Woot! But, all was not perfect. Gary C. told me the shipped configuration of the new RPi models didn't have the right firmware for 512MB, and I had to upgrade the start.elf in the /boot directory to recognize all of the 512MB RAM. I did a "free" command, and sure enough saw only 240MB. Sadness. But, Gary gave me a copy of his start.elf which worked after some trail and error. • Creating Gun objects with upgrades?

  I have a series of guns in my game. My problem is I am not sure how to do this. Examples: increase fire-rate increase range increase accuracy silencer double ammo capacity (ie: Drum) double clip capacity (ie: Taped magazine) Thus my question is, I'd like to implement an upgrade system to guns but I am not sure how to do it. Would there be an Upgrade object which is a child to the Gun class, or would it be seperate class altogether. Thanks for your time.

• How to fix the boot set up?

  I got two OSes in my PC, Ubuntu and Windows 7. Until yesterday Windows 7 was on top of my dual-boot menu list, but I wanted to change it, so I went inside Windows configurations and put Ubuntu first, but I also set the time to 0 because I thought I could access Windows through Grub. But what happens is that after I upgraded Ubuntu to 11.10, that screen with boot options don't show Windows 7 anymore. I went online searching for a solution to my problem, most of them told me to configure some Grub options and others to use programs to do it. I've done them all and still can't access Windows 7. Just in case my problem is not clear yet, this is how was my boot order before I messed it all up: Windows 7 Ubuntu with a time of 10 secs to choose between both. This is how I wanted it to be: Ubuntu Windows 7 with 0 time to choose, but, inside Ubuntu I could access Windows through that Grub screen. But this is what happens: Ubuntu Windows 7 0 time, so it don't let me choose anything and jumps inside Ubuntu then inside Ubuntu grub doesn't show up anymore (black screen) and it starts Ubuntu normally. I tried to fix this many times from different ways inside Ubuntu but nothing worked, also when I try do something and then upgrade my grub with sudo upgrade-grub it shows this message: Generating grub.cfg ... Found Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1 Skipping Windows 7 (loader) on Wubi system Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.0.0-12-generic Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.0.0-12-generic Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-12-generic Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.38-12-generic done Thats why in the title I said it could probably be my WUBI messing all up. Anyone heave a solution for this? Do you need more information? I have a netbook so I cannot use the Windows Repair CD.

• Why is apt-cache so slow?

  After upgrade to Trusty (14.04) from Saucy (13.10), all apt operations are very slow. Even those that do not include downloading anything, or connecting to any servers. For example, displaying the apt policy # time apt-cache policy [...] real 0m8.951s user 0m5.069s sys 0m3.861s takes almost ten seconds! Mostly a weird lag right after issuing the command. And it's the same even if I issue the same command again. On another system it doesn't take a tenth of a second real 0m0.096s user 0m0.070s sys 0m0.023s The other system is a little beefier but there was no noticeable difference before the upgrade. It's the same with apt-get, anything apt-related. How do I find out the source of this lag and fix it? • Why don't my Fn keys work for brightness or media after upgrading?

  I recently upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10. After the upgrade, I can no longer adjust the screen brightness or the volume using keyboard (before the upgrade, using Fn+F4, Fn+F11, etc. worked). Using Fn+F2 to disable wireless still works, so I guess the Fn key itself is being recognised. I tried to follow the instructions here, but I don't have a file in /etc/X11 called xorg.conf. I also tried following this workaround, but it had no noticeable effect. I've also tried going to Settings ? Keyboard ? Shortcuts and reassigning the brightness and volume controls, both to the default keys and to new combinations. These changes don't have an effect even after rebooting. Googling has found bug reports where pressing the media keys brings up a "no entry sign" rather than changing the volume. When I press the keys there's no response at all. I've also seen various people say a workaround is to have totem running in the background; this doesn't work for me either. Finally, I tried installing keytouch; I was able to install keytouch-editor but got the message "Unable to locate package keytouch". Any more ideas? I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me (even by pointing to a thread I've missed)!

• On installing nvidia drivers on 12.10 I get "Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.5.0-19-generic (x86_64)"

  New Ubuntu user - just recently made the mistake of trying a different nvidia driver. I'd managed to get the last (nvidia-current) one working through software sources a few weeks ago. The other day I tried to cross over to nvidia-experimental-310 and this produced a system error. Swapping back and forth between proprietary drivers now always causes an error and I can't get any of them to work. Installing through the terminal I get this error message every time: Building initial module for 3.5.0-19-generic Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.5.0-19-generic (x86_64) Consult /var/lib/dkms/nvidia-experimental-310/310.14/build/make.log for more information On rebooting, I end up with the crappy screen resolution and the thick black border around the screen. I use gksudo software-properties-gtk to bring up sources, where I can change back to the nouveau driver, which restores my screen. After that I can't find /var/lib/dkms/nvidia-experimental-310/310.14/build/make.log so I can't tell you what's inside. Any ideas what might be preventing the nvidia driver from installing? SOLUTION FOUND Okay - so I have a workaround. This is what has worked: Upgrade to kernel 3.7.0 as detailed here upgrade to latest version of the nvidia drivers as detailed here No idea what was happening with kernel 3.5.0-19, but this seems to be better. A little slower maybe on boot, but after days of messing around it's nice to have something that works.

• ATI HD5450 w/ Ubuntu 14?

  So, I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 right now. Last night I realised that I'm way behind as we're up to 14! Decided to run the updater and figured I'd take the path of least resistance (but lengthy choice) of going 12.04 - 12.10 - 13.xx - 14.xx. So I download the first packet and then get an error message about my graphics card perhaps not working in 12.10. Now part of the reason I was looking to upgrade is because I get (and have always had) this strange occasional flickering - now that I have two screens it's just on the second monitor.....oddly this is not the same port that was giving issues before). The graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD5450 and I have the Catalyst (I think it's 13 or 14) driver installed - last night. It could be that the graphics card has never worked properly...I bought the PC new and with an "upgraded" video card and it's always suffered with this flicker. I just figured that the drivers weren't right or something. So I have 3 questions: 1) is my video card broken or is the driver letting it down and causing the flicker? 2) will it be able to handle the upgrade to 14 via 13? Or should I cut my losses and get something newer? 3) if I should get something newer....what should I get ( Thanks in advance....

• Can't log-in anymore

  I installed Ubuntu x64 12.04 Desktop LTS on my new laptop three days ago. Of course when I installed it I did an "apt-get upgrade" and a "apt-get update". I modified the .bashrc file to add some aliases but that's about it. Everything went fine I think, but this morning when I tried to connect to my user account, it just simply didn't work. Even when I give the right password, it will send me to a black screen with a few text lines written in white for a second and then back to the log-in screen. When I logged into the guest session, I couldn't shutdown / restart. I tried the "rm /home/MyUsername/.Xauthority" solution after doing a Ctrl + Alt + F1 at the log-in screen. But that didn't work. Does anyone has an idea ? My Ubuntu seems to use Gnome. Thank you a lot in advance ! • Type of AI to tackle this problem?

  I posted this on stackoverflow but want to get your recommendations as well as a user on overflow recommended I post it here. I'm going to say from the beginning that I am not a programmer, I have a cursory knowledge of different types of AI and am just a businessman building a web app. Anyways, the web app I am investing in to develop is for a hobby of mine. There are many part manufacturers, product manufacturers, upgrade and addon manufacturers etc. for hardware/products in this hobby's industry. Currently, I am in the process of building a crowd sourced platform for people who are knowledgeable to go in and mark up compatibility between those parts as its not always clear cut if they are for example: Manufacturer A makes a "A" class product, and manufacturer B makes upgrade/part that generally goes with class "A" products, but is for one reason or another not compatible with Manufacturer A's particular "A" class product. However, a good chunk (60%-70%) of the products/parts in the database can have their compatibility inferenced by their properties, For example: Part 1 is type "A" with "X" mm receiver and part 2 is also Type "A" with "X" mm interface and thus the two parts are compatible.. or Part 1 is a 8mm gear, thus all bushings of 8mm from any manufacturer is compatible with part 1. Further more, all gears can only have compatibility relationships in the database with bushing and gear boxes, but there can be no meaningful compatibility between a gear and a rail, or receiver since those parts don't interface. Now what I want is an AI to be able to learn from the decisions of the crowdsourced platform community and be able to inference compatibility for new parts/products based on their tagged attributes, what type of part they are etc. What would be the best form of AI to tackle this? I was thinking a Expert System, but explicitly engineering all of the knowledge rules would be daunting because of the complex relations between literally tens of thousands of parts, hundreds of part types and many manufacturers. Would a ANN (neural network) be ideal to learn from the many inputs/decisions of the crowdsource platform users? Any help/input is much appreciated.

• Lubuntu 13.04, kernel still 3.8.0-32-generic

  My question is very similar to Ubuntu 13.10, kernel still 3.8.0-31-generic. Recently was updating to Saucy and the ethernet cable got unplugged. So I decided to run Software Update again, to reinstall files. It returned that "everything is up to date". But according to these command-line searches, that is incorrect. How can I install Saucy now safely from the command line? sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done lubuntu-desktop is already the newest version. • My computer is broken after recent update attempt to 14.04

  So it all started on a day much like today, because it is today but that's not the point, when I got a notification telling me I haven't upgraded to 14.04. Not due to lack of trying, however. It offered to upgrade me itself. Now keep in mind, I've tried very hard to upgrade my is from 12.04 to 14.04. Many times, I believe, due to tinkering where there shouldn't be tinkering, my BIOS are messed up. So upgrading is essentially impossible, but I wasn't about to stop it from updating for me, thinking it didn't have too much to do with BIOS as it doesn't reboot until after. So I let it go about its business and some time later I look back at it, and my unity sidebar is gone, and anytime there's text on screen it shows as those box things. The real bottom line is that I want to know my options. All of them. I would love to be able to keep the stuff on my hard drive so a hard drive swap may be an option if you guys say that would work. • SSH Public Key Authentication only works if active session exists before

  I have a rather strange problem with my SSH configuration. I set up my server with the help of a Remote Access Card and configured everything with a KVM viewer. So while being logged into the server via the KVM Viewer I configured SSH with only pubkey and tried to login from my local laptop. It worked fine. If I quit the KVM Session (or logout with the user in the KVM session) I cannot login via ssh anymore (pubkey denied). SSH login only works as long as the user is somewhere still logged in. Any hints what the problem might be? • Rails app deployment challenge, not finding database table in production.log

  I'm trying to setup PasswordPusher as my first ruby app ever. Building and running the webrick server as instructed in README works fine. It was only when I tried to add Apache ProxyPass and ProxyPassReverse that the page load slowed down to several minutes. So I gave mod_passenger a whirl but now it's unable to find the password table. Here's what I get in log/production.log. • Installation of Access Database Engine 32-bit Fails

  I am trying to install Access Database Engine 2007 32-bit. The splash screen comes up, you click "Next", then it fails with the error: Installation ended prematurely because of an error You click "OK" and another error window says: The installation of the package failed. The exact same situation happens when I try this with Access Database Engine 2010 32-bit. This production server is running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 64-bit. Before I tried installing Access Database Engine 32-bit, I first needed to install Microsoft Office 2010 Pro (Excel and Office Tools only). I tried the 32-bit version on the production server since that is how I set it up in our Dev environment. No luck. The 32-bit version would not install. I did NOT get the error "You have 64-bit components of Office installed". I simply received the exact same two errors listed above. So, I knew that 32-bit/64-bit did not really matter for the Office install for my project, so I installed 64-bit of Office Pro 2010 (Excel and Office Tools only) with no problems. I have a requirement that I need to have the 32-bit version of the Access Database Engine installed. 2007 or 2010, doesn't matter. I cannot use the 64-bit version of Access Database Engine 2010 because my SSIS package will not work with it. I require the 32-bit version. I've tried several steps to try to get it installed. I seriously think that the production server has some aversion to installing 32-bit applications. Here's what I've tried: Tried installing via command line with the "/passive" switch....no luck. Tried numerous iterations to copy the install file to the server (downloaded a fresh copy directly to the server, downloaded a fresh copy to my local machine then copied it over, copied it over zipped up) (http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqldataaccess/thread/efd3c1f0-07cd-45ca-a626-2dd0c7ac3e9f). Tried Method 1 from this link. Could not try Method 2 because it requires a server reboot and in my environment that requires a long change management process. I've verified that I am a local administrator on the server. (Evidence, I am able to install other applications (office 64-bit per above)). Verified that there are no other office products that should be blocking the installation. The fore-mentioned install of Excel 2010 64-bit was the first Office product installed on the server. VERY ODD: To test my theory that the production server does not like 32-bit applications, I installed something lightweight. I installed 7-Zip 32-bit on the production server with no problems whatsoever. Here are some things that I have not tried (i will follow-up once I do): Method 2 (as mentioned above). Requires a server reboot. Have not verified that the Dev and Production environments are 100% identical. I've done a cursory check and on the surface they appear to be the same (same OS and SP version). I need to do a deeper dive to be 100% certain. I had no problems in my Dev environment. In Dev, I installed Office 2010 Pro 64-bit (Excel & Office Tools only) then via command line w/ the "/passive" switch, installed Access Database Engine 2010 32-bit. I don't know what else to try. Any suggestions or comments?

• tightvnc authentication failure

  When I run a tightvnc client to establish a VNC session I sometimes receive an error message that suggests there are repeated failed VNC login attempts or a brute force attack. The message dialog title is "unsupported security type" and the text content is "too many authentication failures, try another connection? yes/no". This problem goes away if I reboot the Ubuntu server and reload the VNC server program and try again. From that point, it will work for multiple VNC sessions. My VNC sessions are typically about 20 minutes. At some time in the future, the problem may recur so it seems correlated to the time the server has been up or the time tightvnc has been loaded. Typically it takes only a day or so before the problem comes back. I am using tightvnc 1.3 on an server running Ubuntu 12.04. The version of vncserver is rather dated because that seems to be all that is available from tightvnc for linux servers. On the client side I use the newest Java-based VNC client (version 2.5) for both Windows access and Ubuntu access. All my VNC sessions are via SSH. I am the only user and I will typically use only the same client computer. How can I stop this problem from recurring? Edit I found the log file. This is a small excerpt of what I am seeing. • Windows XP update not working

  I have a problem with XP updating. It hangs when I try to search for updates on the website. But the automatic updates still work. And it's running IE6, so I'm trying to update to IE8, hoping that will fix the problems with the website.   The graphical Interface in my system is garbled with some text. At the beginning I thought it was due to java and tomcat that I installed. But after removing java and tomcat, it is still the same. • How to move a ruby on rails application to a new server

  I have a rails app on an old Ubuntu server I need to move onto a new machine. I haven't worked with ruby on rails so I don't really know anything about the structure of the app. I want to load this onto an Ubuntu 8.04 AMI on Amazon EC2 and am looking for any information regarding the migration process such as: Do I copy over the entire folder defined as the application root in the mongrel config (for ex: /u/apps/myapp/current) or just certain folders?
