  • Windows 8 UX Guidelines in one PDF

    - by nmarun
There are quite a few things you need do to differently in order to write a great Windows 8 App. Although MSDN has it documented completely in their site , the sheer volume of other related information might overwhelm you. In order to make it easy, they have a single pdf with all the relevant information. The file will also serve as a ‘quick ref’ document whether you are developing using C#-XAML or HTML5-JS-CSS or C++-DirectX style. And yes, this has been updated for the RTM version....(read more)

Last year, I had a series of blog posts that matched up with a webcast I did targeting First Timers to the PASS Summit 2011. I am in the process of updating the webcast and will be presenting the information again this year on Oct 25, 2012 at 11am ET. There is a lot of great information out there for first timers that...(read more)

  • Want to know how SQL Server logging works?

    - by Jonathan Kehayias
Have you ever wondered why SQL Server logging works the way it does?  While I have long understood the importance behind the SQL Server Transaction Log, I have never actually understood exactly why it works the way it does, despite having attended Paul Randal’s ( Blog / Twitter ) session at PASS Summit last year.  Over the last few months I have been working on writing a book on troubleshooting the most common problems that I see asked on the forums, and as a part of that I have been digging...(read more)

  • Server Core: Best Practice for Applications on Windows Server

    - by The Official Microsoft IIS Site
I have been talking with a number of customers, CSOs, CIOs and industry professionals over the past few weeks and I realized that the availability and benefits of using the Server Core option of Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 was not as widely known as I think it should be. Windows Server Core provides a minimal installation environment for running specific server roles, which reduces the maintenance and management requirements and the attack surface for those server roles. The following...(read more)

  • Authenticated SMTP Using System.Net.Mail

    - by The Official Microsoft IIS Site
Using system.net.mail to send email messages from your web site makes life so easy. In the old days of Classic ASP you often had to rely on 3rd party components such as AspMail from serverobjects.com or AspEmail from persists.com. While they were very capable products and are still widely used today it added an additional layer of complexity to your programming. If you ever had to move a site from one server to another there was always a risk the components were not in place which would cause problems...(read more)

  • Learning PostgreSql: polymorphism

    - by Alexander Kuznetsov
Functions in PL/PgSql are polymorphic, which is very different from T-SQL. Demonstrating polymorphism For example, the second CREATE FUNCTION in the following script does not replace the first function - it creates a second one: CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION public .GetQuoteOfTheDay ( someNumber INTEGER ) RETURNS VARCHAR AS $body$ BEGIN RETURN 'Say my name.' ; END ; $body$ LANGUAGE plpgsql ; CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION public .GetQuoteOfTheDay ( someNumber REAL ) RETURNS VARCHAR AS $body$ BEGIN RETURN...(read more)

  • How to merge your referenced assemblies into the output assembly for improved usability

    - by Daniel Cazzulino
Something we've been doing in moq since the very beginning is to have a single assembly as output: Moq.dll. This reduces the clutter for users and lets them focus on what they need from our library, rather than getting the noise of whatever third-party (or internal) libraries we use to implement it. This is good from the deployment point of view too, and if all your libraries are actually internal infrastructure assemblies, you can even make them all internal types of your output assembly....Read full article

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 still requires a trace flag for Lock Pages in Memory

    - by AaronBertrand
Almost two years ago, I blogged that Lock Pages in Memory was finally available to Standard Edition customers (Enterprise Edition customers had long been deemed smart enough to not abuse this feature). In addition to applying a cumulative update (2005 SP3 CU4 or 2008 SP1 CU2), in order to take advantage of LPIM, you also had to enable trace flag 845. Since the trace flag isn't documented for SQL Server 2008 R2, several of us in the community assumed that it was no longer required (since it was introduced...(read more)

  • SSAS Native v .net Provider

    - by ACALVETT
Recently I was investigating why a new server which is in its parallel running phase was taking significantly longer to process the daily data than the server its due to replace. The server has SQL & SSAS installed so the problem was not likely to be in the network transfer as its using shared memory. As i dug around the SQL dmv’s i noticed in sys.dm_exec_connections that the SSAS connection had a packet size of 8000 bytes instead of the usual 4096 bytes and from there i found that the datasource...(read more)

  • Service Broker Solutions - Don't Forget the Basics

After finally getting a Service Broker solution implemented successfully, I'm really impressed with the technology, and frustrated how difficult it can be to implement and get it really working as expected. First, understand the technology. There are some great resources out there to help you get started. The first place to go is Klaus Aschenbrenner's book, the one that Greg Low reviewed this past week.
