• General rule - when to use a model (Codeigniter)

  Hi guys, I was just curious as to what the rule of thumb was for models. Generally, I use them only for situations where I need to add/edit or update database entries for an object. However, I'm building an app at the moment that has a "config" table which holds various data, such as last updated, which will control when certain features in the app should be displayed. In this instance, I will mostly need to retrieve data from the config table. Is it worth putting these config methods in model? I'm interested to hear how more experienced coders approach the MVC methodology in CI - example pseudo methods (e.g., what methods relating to the same object you'd use in the model and the controller) would be most helpful.

The driving distance between Perth and Adelaide is 1996 miles. On the average, the fuel consumption of a 2.0 litre 4 cylinder car is 8 litres per 100 kilometres. The fuel tank capacity of such a car is 60 litres. Design and implement a JAVA program that prompts for the fuel consumption and fuel tank capacity of the aforementioned car. The program then displays the minimum number of times the car’s fuel tank has to be filled up to drive from Perth to Adelaide. Note that 62 miles is equal to 100 kilometres. What data will you use to test that your algorithm works correctly?

• Rendering 'belongs_to" in index view question - Ruby on Rails

  I have created a simple blog application with Ruby on Rails. The applications consists of two tables, posts and comments. Comments belongs_to :post and posts has_many :comments. I created posts table with the following columns: title:string, body:text. I created the comments table with the following columns: body:text post_id:integer name:string email:string In the /views/comments/index.html.erb display I would like to show a listing of all comments w/ the post title as well. Currently, the index view only displays post_id, body, name, email. How do I replace the post_id column with the corresponding post title? • State pattern: Why doesn't the context class implement or inherit the State abstract interface/class

  I'm reading about the State pattern. I have only just begun, so of course I begin by reading the entire Wikipedia article on it. I noticed that both of the examples in the article have some base abstract class or Java interface for a generic State's methods/functions. Then there are some states which inherit from the base and implement those methods/functions in different ways. Then there's a Context class which has a private member of type State and which, at any time, can be equal to an instance of one of the implementations. That context class also implements the same methods, and passes them onto the current state instance, and then has an additional method to change the state (or depending on design I understand the change of state could be a reaction to one of the implemented methods). Why doesn't this context class specifically "extend" or "implement" the generic State base class/interface?

  I am trying to find a way to export data from my database and save it as a .csv file. Ideally the user will be able to select a date range on a view, which will display the data to be exported, then the user can click an "export to CSV" link. • Separate functionality depending on Role in ASP.NET MVC

  I'm looking for an elegant pattern to solve this problem: I have several user roles in my system, and for many of my controller actions, I need to deal with slightly different data. For example, take /Users/Edit/1 This allows a Moderator to edit a users email address, but Administrators to edit a user's email address and password. I'd like a design for separating the two different bits of action code for the GET and the POST. Solutions I've come up with so far are: Switch inside each method, however this doesn't really help when i want different model arguments on the POST :( Custom controller factory which chooses a UsersController_ForModerators and UsersController_ForAdmins instead of just UsersController from the controller name and current user role Custom action invoker which choose the Edit_ForModerators method in a similar way to above Have an IUsersController and register a different implementation of it in my IoC container as a named instance based on Role Build an implementation of the controller at runtime using Castle DynamicProxy and manipulate the methods to those from role-based implementations Im preferring the named IoC instance route atm as it means all my urls/routing will work seamlessly. Ideas? Suggestions?

• Ordering the calling of asynchronous methods in c#

  Hi, Say I have 4 classes ControllerClass MethodClass1 MethodClass2 MethodClass3 and each MethodClass has an asynchronous method DoStuff() and each has a CompletedEvent. The ControllerClass is responsible for invoking the 3 asynchronous methods on the 3 MethodClasses in a particular order. So ControllerClass invokes MethodClass1.DoStuff() and subscribes to MethodClass1.CompletedEvent. When that event is fired, ControllerClass invokes MethodClass2.DoStuff() and subscribes to MethodClass2.CompletedEvent. When that event is fired, the ControllerClass invokes MethodClass3.DoStuff() Is there a best practice for a situation like this? Is this bad design? I believe it is because I am finding it hard to unit test (a sure sign) It is not easy to change the order I have an uneasy, code-smell feeling about it What are the alternatives in a situation like this?

  I just started going through Node using Express and finally got Consolidate JS working properly to use Mustache as the templating view system per the instructions on the Consolidate JS Github page. Mustache is loading properly, but I'm now wondering how to include the layout file along in the rendering of the template. The default Jade system loads the content of the .render method inside of the layout.jade file. I'm just wondering how to do the same, but with Mustache. Any help is greatly appreciated!   I am trying to understand how can I implement the same functionality which provides navigation view in sencha touch 2, but .... Each item of the 'Ext.NavigationView' component should have it's own unique set of 'navigationBar' elements. I mean set of buttons, for example. I know that I can do something like this: this.getMain().getNavigationBar().rightBox.removeAll(); this.getMain().getNavigationBar().rightBox.add(this.getSettingButton()); //where 'getSettingButton' predefined by me a button And do this action each time when 'push' event happens (clear 'navigationBar' and add appropriate set of buttons) Of course, I even can implement 'Ext.Panel' with 'layout: card' and set of 'Ext.panel' elements in the 'items' property, each of which will be have unique 'toolbar'. To control the behavior I can use 'setActiveItem' method. But, I think each of these approaches is a bit weird, isn't it? I expected that would be much more natural approach to implement it. Most likely I don't know what I need. Confirm my doubts. What is the best way to do it.

• Why does Excel expose an 'Evaluate' method at all?

  A few questions have come up recently involving the Application.Evaluate method callable from Excel VBA. The old XLM macro language also exposes an EVALUATE() function. Both can be quite useful. Does anyone know why the general expression evaluator is exposed, though? My own hunch is that Excel needed to give people a way to get ranges from string addresses, and to get the value of named formulas, and just opening a portal to the expression evaluator was the easiest way. But of course you don't need the ability to evaluate arbitrary expressions just to do that. Application.Evaluate seems kind of...unfinished. It isn't very well documented, and there are quite a few quirks and limitations (as described by Charles Williams here: http://www.decisionmodels.com/calcsecretsh.htm) with what is exposed. I suppose the answer could be simply "why not expose it?", but I'd be interested to know what design decisions led to this feature. Failing that, I'd be interested to hear other hunches.

  Stackoverflow users, How do you keep yourself from creating large classes with large bodied methods. When deadlines are tight, you end up trying to hack things together and it ends up being a mess which would need to be refactored. For me, the one way was to start with test driven development and that lends itself to good class design as well as the SRP (Single Responsibility Principle). I also see developers just double clicking on controls and typing out line after line in the event method that gets fired. What are your suggestions?

As I'm designing my schema, I'm concerned about this statement from the MongoDB Schema Design - Embed vs. Reference Documentation: If the amount of data to embed is huge (many megabytes), you may read the limit on size of a single object. This will surely happen if I understand the statement correctly. • Resources to learn about engineering aspects of data analytics (OLAP, warehousing, ETL, etc.)

  I'm a math/stats guy, interested in learning more about the engineering aspects of "data analytics" (this may be an overly broad term, this is a case of "I don't know what I don't know", so I'm not sure how to be more specific). I'm fine with manipulating and analyzing the data once it's already stored somewhere and I can access it, and I'm fine with writing scripts and SQL queries (and have a general knowledge of things like normalization). What I don't know is the whole engineering process of capturing and storing the data. For example, terms I've heard thrown about that I only vaguely understand the meaning of include: - OLAP, OLTP - Data warehousing - ETL - ??? What's a good book (or any other resource) to learn about these kinds of things? What are things I should know about database design (normalization seems kinda "obvious" to me, something I would have done even before I knew the term -- is there anything else?)? In other words, for jobs falling under the umbrella term of "analytics engineer", what kinds of things should I know?

• How to customize android analog clock widget through configuration screen

  I'm trying to develop my own analog clock widget on the home screen. It's based on the stock ICS analog clock widget, but when added to the homescreen, my widget opens a configuration screen first. On this screen you can choose the color you want the clock to be (through a colorpicker dialog). You also see a preview of the clock in the chosen color on this screen. (See picture). My problem is changing the color of the widget on the home screen to the chosen color (when you hit the apply button). I have three .png files that I use for the dial, hour hand and minute hand. I color them using this code in my widgetconfig class: Drawable dial = getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.clockbackground); dial.setColorFilter(color, PorterDuff.Mode.MULTIPLY); //hour Drawable hour = getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.hourhand); hour.setColorFilter(color, PorterDuff.Mode.MULTIPLY); //minute Drawable min = getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.minutehand); min.setColorFilter(color, PorterDuff.Mode.MULTIPLY); // clock AnalogClock clockpreview = (AnalogClock) findViewById(R.id.ACconfig); clockpreview.setBackgroundDrawable(dial); This works fine because I can find the AnalogClock since it's in the layout xml file of the configuration screen, which I set in the OnCreate() through setContentView(). The problem is that for the clock widget on my screen I have to use RemoteViews. So I tried setting the new background of the clock widget through RemoteViews. But RemoteViews seems too limited to do this. I need something like setTextViewText() but then for the background of my analog clock widget, like for example: RemoteViews views = new RemoteViews(context.getPackageName(), R.layout.clockwidget); views.setAnalogClockBackgroundDrawable(dial); The clock widget background seems sort of unchangeable. How can I recolor my clockwidget on homescreen in widgetconfig class? There must be a way because it seems so easy to do at first... My project consists of the widget config class and clockwidget class, widgetconfig.xml, clockwidget.xml, and widget_info.xml (for appwidgetprovider).

• Enabling new admin action(button sales_order/view) in ACL

  Hi, We created new action similar to 'hold', 'ship' and others in the 'sales_order/view' admin section that can be triggered by clicking at the button. Afterward, we added our new action to the ACL with the following code in config.xml: <acl> <resources> <admin> <children> <sales> <children> <order> <children> <actions translate="title"> <title>Actions</title> <children> <shipNew translate="title"><title>Ship Ups</title></shipNew> </children> </actions> </children> <sort_order>10</sort_order> </order> </children> </sales> </children> </admin> </resources> </acl> ACL functionality works, however, in the 'Resources Tree'(System/Permissions/Roles/Role Resources) our new action does never show up as selected(checked) even thou it is allowed for particular Role. I can see that from table 'admin_rule' with resource id for our new action that it is allowed, so it needs to be selected, but it is not. When trying to solve this issue i looked into the template(permissions/rolesedit.phtml) and I found that the 'resource tree' is draw with Javascript...thats where i got stock due to my limited knowledge in Javascript. Why the resource tree does not display our new ACL entry correctly, that is the check box is never checked? Thank You for helping margots

• How set opacity on QGraphicsItem

  Hello, i have a inherited from QGraphicsScene and QGraphicsItem to create my own classes. I use Qt 4.6. I want to set a specific opacity on each items of my scene. I use setOpacity : setOpacity method, but its not the result i hope. I want to have for example one item opaque and an other transparent (to see the desktop, or the other application). But if i dont set the opacity of the QGraphicsView to 0.5, i have not the transparancy. And if the QGraphicsView is set to 0.5, the item is not real opaque. What should i do ? Thanks you.
