• Netbeans Java SE GUI Builder: private initComponents() problem

  When I build a GUI for my Java SE app with Netbeans GUI builder, it puts all the codes in the initComponents() method which is private. I could not change it to public. So, all the components are accessible only to the class containing the UI. I want to access those components from another class so that I can write custom event handlers and everything. Most importantly I want to separate my GUI code and non-GUI from each other. I can copy paste the GUI code and later make them public by hand to achieve what I want. But thats a pain. I have to handcraft a portion whenever I need to re-design the UI. What I tried to do: I used the variable identifier to make the text box public. Now how can I access the text box from the Main class? I think I need the component generated in a public method as well. I am new to Java. Any helps? • Type patterns in Haskell

  I'm trying to compile a simple example of generic classes / type patterns (see http://www.haskell.org/ghc/docs/latest/html/users_guide/generic-classes.html) in Haskell but it won't compile. Any ideas about what's wrong with the code would be helpful. According to the documentation there should be a module Generics with the data types Unit, :*:, and :+: but ghc (6.12.1) complaints about Not in scope: data constructor 'Unit' etc. It seems like there's a package instant-generics with the data types :*:, :+: and U but when I import that module (instead of Generics) I get the error Illegal type pattern in the generic bindings {myPrint _ = ""} The complete source code is import Generics.Instant class MyPrint a where myPrint :: a -> String myPrint {| U |} _ = "" myPrint {| a :*: b |} (x :*: y) = "" (show x) ++ ":*:" ++ (show y) myPrint {| a :+: b |} _ = "" data Foo = Foo String instance MyPrint a => MyPrint a main = myPrint $ Foo "hi" and I compile it using ghc --make Foo.hs -fglasgow-exts -XGenerics -XUndecidableInstances P.S.   I have a service and I want the service promote to enable it as Device Admin, until now I launched this kind of UI interactions from the service like Intent intent2 = new Intent(); intent2.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK); intent2.setAction(android.content.Intent.ACTION_VIEW); intent2.setDataAndType(uri, "application/vnd.android.package-archive"); context.startActivity(intent2); and it works, but with DevicePolicyManager I can't find the way: Intent intent = new Intent(DevicePolicyManager.ACTION_ADD_DEVICE_ADMIN); intent.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK); intent.putExtra(DevicePolicyManager.EXTRA_DEVICE_ADMIN, mAdminName); intent.putExtra(DevicePolicyManager.EXTRA_ADD_EXPLANATION, "some text."); context.startActivity(intent); does't work: do not promote nothing but also do not crash. Without intent.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK); It simply crash because this code is inside a tread inside a service. Ideas?

  Hi, I'm trying to extract a number from a string. And do something like this [0-9]+ on this string "aaaa12xxxx" and get "12". I thought it would be something like: > grep("[0-9]+","aaa12xxx", value=TRUE) [1] "aaa12xxx" And then I figured... > sub("[0-9]+", "\\1", "aaa12xxxx") [1] "aaa12xxx" But I got some form of response doing: > sub("[0-9]+", "ARGH!", "aaa12xxxx") [1] "aaaARGH!xxx" There's a small detail I'm missing Please advice :-) I'm using R version 2.10.1 (2009-12-14) Thanks ! • RPM build process without installing

  I'm trying to build my own rpm package and have a couple of doubts. First of all, in several places I've red that one shouldn't build rpms as root. Why is that? During the building process, rpmbuild has to go through the install stage where it installs files to the system. As far as I understand I can't do that if I'm not root. rpmbuild process finishes with error. So, the question is if it is really possible to build an rpm without installing stuff into the system? Or eventually I do have to become root to complete the build process?

• Does malloc() allocate a contiguous block of memory?

  I have a piece of code written by a very old school programmer :-) . it goes something like this typedef struct ts_request { ts_request_buffer_header_def header; char package[1]; } ts_request_def; ts_request_buffer_def* request_buffer = malloc(sizeof(ts_request_def) + (2 * 1024 * 1024)); the programmer basically is working on a buffer overflow concept. I know the code looks dodgy. so my questions are: Does malloc always allocate contiguous block of memory ?. because in this code if the blocks are not contiguous , the code will fail big time Doing free(request_buffer) , will it free all the bytes allocated by malloc i.e sizeof(ts_request_def) + (2 * 1024 * 1024), or only the bytes of the size of the structure sizeof(ts_request_def) Do you see any evident problems with this approach , i need to discuss this with my boss and would like to point out any loopholes with this approach

• With Maven, how would I prevent Maven from filtering certain properties but allowing others?

  The problem is that I'm trying to build a project that has in its resources a build.xml file. Basically, I package my project as a jar with Maven2, and then use ant installer to install my project. There is a property in the build.xml file that I need to filter called build.date, but there are other properties that I don't want to filter, like ${basedir}, because it's used by the ant installer but gets replaced by Maven's basedir variable. So, I need to somehow tell Maven to filter ${build.date}, but not ${basedir}. I tried creating a properties file as a filter with "basedir=${basedir}" as one of the properties, but I get the following error: Resolving expression: '${basedir}': Detected the following recursive expression cycle: [basedir] Any suggestions would be much appreciated.   Hey guys, i was searching SO for help on this, but i can't seem to find a concrete solution. Is, or isn't it possible to connect to a mysql database with Cocoa? Because i'm working on a program that i'd like to extend to a database, but i sure as hell don't know how! I mean, that cocoa-mysql package is heavily outdated, and i dont even know what a C wrapper is! Can someone please tell me how to do this, or atleast burst my bubble to tell me that it can't be done?   I'm interested in different algorithms people use to visualise millions of particles in a box. I know you can use Cloud-In-Cell, adaptive mesh, Kernel smoothing, nearest grid point methods etc to reduce the load in memory but there is very little documentation on how to do these things online. i.e. I have array with: x,y,z 1,2,3 4,5,6 6,7,8 xi,yi,zi for i = 100 million for example. I don't want a package like Mayavi/Paraview to do it, I want to code this myself then load the decomposed matrix into Mayavi (rather than on-the-fly rendering) My poor 8Gb Macbook explodes if I try and use the particle positions. Any tutorials would be appreciated.

• Random number within a range based on a normal distribution

  I'm math challenged today :( I want to generate random numbers with a range (n to m, eg 100 to 150), but instead of purely random I want the results to be based on the normal distribution. By this I mean that in general I want the numbers "clustered" around 125. I've found this random number package that seems to have a lot of what I need: http://beta.codeproject.com/KB/recipes/Random.aspx It supports a variety of random generators (include mersiene twister) and can apply the generator to a distribution. But I'm confused... if I use a normal distribution generator the random numbers are from roughly -6 to +8 (apparently the true range is float.min to float.max). How do a scale that to my required range?

• Swing object: first setText() gets "stuck" when using Mac Java SE 6

  Hi there, I am a Java newbie trying to maintain an application that works fine under J2SE 5.0 (32- and 64-bit) but has a very specific problem when run under Java SE 6 64-bit: [Tims-MPB:~] tlynch% java -version java version "1.6.0_15" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_15-b03-226) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.1-b02-92, mixed mode) The application is cross-platform and reportedly works correctly on Java SE 6 under Windows, though I haven't been able to verify that myself. The program uses a JTextField for some text entry and a JLabel to indicate the text to be entered. The first time the showDialog() method is called to set the label text and display the dialog, it works correctly, but subsequent calls all result in the display of the label from the initial invocation rather than the one most recently specified via setText(). public void showDialog(String msgText) { System.out.println("set ChatDialog: " + msgText); jLabel1.setText(msgText); jLabel1.repaint(); // I added this; it didn't help System.out.println("get ChatDialog: " + jLabel1.getText()); super.setVisible(true); } [the full text of the class is provided below] The added printlns validate that expected text is passed to the label's setText() method and is confirmed by retrieving it using getText(), but what shows up on the screen/GUI is always the text from the very first time the method was called for the object. A similar issue is observed with a JTextArea used to label another dialog box. These problem are consistent across multiple Mac systems running Java SE 6 under OS 10.5.x and 10.6.x, but they are never observed when one reverts to J2SE 5.0. If there is some background information pertinent to this problem that I have omitted, please let me know.   I have been trying to run configure to prepare the make file for GTK 2,9 on a fresh Linux box (running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx). it complained about some dependencies, including: glib-2.0 atk (1.29.2) pango (1.20) cairo (1.6) I managed to find the glib 2.22.0, downloaded the atk but did not compile yet, did not start the pango yet, but when tried to get the cairo package I didn't know where to get it from! nothing on GNU site, not on GTK site! anyone knows where to get it from?

• Transferring Data Between Server and Client (Mobile)

  Scenario: Client (Mobile) - .Net CF 2.0, SQL CE 3.0 Server - .Net 2.0, SQL Server 2005, Web Service Client and Server database schemas differ. From server - only certain columns from certain tables need to be synced. From client - everything will need to be synced once client has made changes. Client will continually poll a web service to download and upload data. A framework will be developed to package and unpackage data, used by both client and server. How would you develop the packaging and unpackaging? Use datasets, serialise strongly typed objects? All suggestions welcome. Thanks

• How can I get my setup.py to use a relative path to my files?

  I'm trying to build a Python distribution with distutils. Unfortunately, my directory structure looks like this: /code /mypackage __init__.py file1.py file2.py /subpackage __init__.py /build setup.py Here's my setup.py file: from distutils.core import setup setup( name = 'MyPackage', description = 'This is my package', packages = ['mypackage', 'mypackage.subpackage'], package_dir = { 'mypackage' : '../mypackage' }, version = '1', url = 'http://www.mypackage.org/', author = 'Me', author_email = '[email protected]', ) When I run python setup.py sdist it correctly generates the manifest file, but doesn't include my source files in the distribution. Apparently, it creates a directory to contain the source files (i.e. mypackage1) then copies each of the source files to mypackage1/../mypackage which puts them outside of the distribution. How can I correct this, without forcing my directory structure to conform to what distutils expects?
