• Boots to terminal

  I had a system running 10.04, I think. I upgraded it to 11.04, everything was fine. But then when I upgraded it further to 11.10, the system would only boot to a terminal, no desktop like before. I installed 12.04 on it instead, keeping /home which was on another partition... but it's still booting to terminal. I believe there may be some bad configuration files left over that are causing this. Looking at other similar issues, I looked for /etc/X11/xorg.conf but it doesn't exist. startx says it isn't installed. Installing nvidia-current didn't help (has GF 6600 GT video card). Alt+F7 shows a blank screen. I used the alternate installer, and didn't select any of the optional packages it prompts during installation. Should I have? How do I get it to boot to desktop like normal?

• Can GJK be used with the same "direction finding method" every time?

  In my deliberations on GJK (after watching http://mollyrocket.com/849) I came up with the idea that it ins not neccessary to use different methods for getting the new direction in the doSimplex function. E.g. if the point A is closest to the origin, the video author uses the negative position vector AO as the direction in which the next point is searched. If an edge (with A as an endpoint) is closest, he creates a normal vector to this edge, lying in the plane the edge and AO form. If a face is the feature closest to the origin, he uses even another method (which I can't recite from memory right now) However, while thinking about the implementation of GJK in my current came, I noticed that the negative direction vector of the newest simplex point would always make a good direction vector. Of course, the next vertex found by the support function could form a simplex that less likely encases the origin, but I assume it would still work. Since I'm currently experiencing problems with my (yet unfinished) implementation, I wanted to ask whether this method of forming the direction vector is usable or not.

• Ubuntu 12.04 Responsiveness Extremely Slow on Nvidia 8800?

  Just installed 12.04... This is the first time I run Ubuntu with the Unity UI, not a pleasant experience. The responsiveness is extremely slow (10s after a mouseclick), the screen flickers, etc, all right after logging in. Switching the display driver from Nvidia current to post-release doesn't help at all. What now? Can't go back, but Ubuntu is useless to me right now. What can I do? (The system is a Intel 4x2.4Ghz with 4Gb RAM and a Nvidia 8800.)

• Alternatives to voxel-based terrain

  Are there any alternatives to voxel based terrains? Such terrain should be fully destructable, allow for arches, overhangs, preserve sharp features where needed and keep consistent topology. Maybe you can explain the problem that makes you ask this question? Voxel based terrain is basically just using a 3D grid of data to store data. There are lots of ways to render that data, but it doesn't get much simpler for storing it. – Byte56 Current isosurface extraction methods aren't most effective/bug-free. Cubical Marching Squares seem to solve most of the issues, however it is a relatively new method and there aren't too many resources about it. (I've found single university paper) Even if we stick to CMS, when we want to add multi-material support, we can either divide surface into multiple meshes, or pass a texture array or texture atlas to shaders, then we are limited to set amount of textures and additionally increase memory-usage alot.

• What do you do when the code isn't complicated enough?

  After six months of development on a project, our stakeholders have had a "gut check" and have decided that the path that we've been walking (a custom designed application framework and data access layer) is holding us (the developers) back from quickly developing the features they would like to see. After several days of debate management and the development team have decided to scrap the current incarnation and start over using ASP.net MVC, with Entity Framework as the bases of the a 'quick and dirty', lets just get it done project. In days following, our senior developer who has never worked with MVC or Entity Framework has finally gotten into a sample project and done some work. His take on ASP.net MVC, "this is not software engineering". So my question is this; what do you do, when one doesn't think the code is complicated enough?

• Install/Downgrade kernel to v3.5.5 on Ubuntu 13.04

  I've been looking around the internet for a solution to downgrade the kernel from 3.8 to 3.5.5 since I've got the AMD/Ati Radeon Mobility HD 5600 graphic card on my machine. This video card in unfortunately not supported by the 3.8 kernel. And then when I've downgraded the kernel I need to install a version 12.* of the AMD Catalyst driver. There is too much in stake to wipe out the current installation of the OS and install an older OS. So I would like to avoid doing that to the ends of the world.   For my master thesis I wanted to design a small multiplayer game which includes more than one player(maybe 5), has 2-3 players collaborating at a time to achieve some task. The most important thing is realistic simulation of the movable objects in the scene which more than one player should simultaneously interact with. I would also prefer large virtual environments (VEs) like mmogs where groups of players are interacting in different areas of the VE. tasks for players should include 2-3 players touching movable objects at same time. e,g, a very basic task can be users lifting a cube together and pushing it through a hole I am not new to designing virtual environments with openGL, but have never designed games before and rarely play other than few of my favorite ones like Fifa. I wanted some ideas on what kind of games should I look at which should help me with ideas for my tasks for the users to gain points and win in games? any current indie games which might inspire me?

• Starting application in same window with XFCE4 Terminal and i3

  Since recently I'm enjoying the i3 tiled window manager. I did install the XFCE4 Terminal since it gives greater control over my terminal look and feel however but I have noticed an issue with starting GUI based applications. When I execute a GUI based application I want it take over the current terminal window. To do this I use exec, as in: exec eclipse This will open a new window and leave the terminal I started the application in open as well. In normal circumstances this is not much of a problem since I can easily do an Alt-W on the GUI app's window. However, for some applications, like a file manager, it is necessary to open in the same window. How can I make GUI application open in the same window rather than opening a new one?

  I have a question about Software Architecture, anyone can help me or give me some hints currently, I have a J2EE project which deploys in a server, I should a Java Standard project(J2SE) should run 24 hours x 7 days to monitor something it could not run separately, because the Java Project shared the some same classes such as Java Bean classes with the J2EE project maybe my design is not correct, can anyone suggest me what should I do? Using SOA? is this correct? my current solution is run this java project using a bash, but I dont think it is then best idea. • All windows decorations disappear after I maximize any window

  When I maximize some of the windows all decorations disappear (by all, I mean on all windows)... Is that common issue on Unity or I'm just unlucky to have some prone to that bug configuration? Anyone have idea how to fix this? It won't fix after unmaximize. It seems like maximazing window simply crashes window decorator. Decoration isn't displayed for all existing windows and any new ones. Only way I found to fix this is to run compiz --replace (but this ruins current windows placement - all windows end up on same desktop). It happens almost every time I maximize window.

• Need a CDN with SSL

  We currently use Edgecast through Speedyrails. Back when I did my research they were both fast and very cost-effective. I haven't looked in a while, but now we need SSL on our assets as well. I reached out to our current provider and they want a setup fee and something like 260 USD per host per month (we use multiple hosts currently). I looked at AWS Cloudfront and it seems the most cost affective way to get SSL, but it's not a custom domain then (e.g. cdn.example.org), which I could live with. Has any else researched this lately and has any providers to get in touch with - can be resellers or direct buys. I'm not looking for a bargain, I just want to get an idea what these things cost. Edit, 2012-08-23: Must have is custom origin. E.g. I don't want to manually upload files somewhere else. Edgecast and Cloudfront both support this.

• SSD becomes hot, disk failure warning

  I have a two weeks old SSD (Kingston SSDnow 64GB). Yesterday, the computer shutdown twice and after rebooting I was bombarded with disk failure warnings. I usually take such warnings serious (and backed up), but skeptical. After cooling down, the laptop boots again and the only red Smart value was the temperature (Ubuntu did not show the temperature of failure, but the at that time 29°). After refreshing the Smart status and doing a "self test", everything is green. Before contacting Kingston support, I would like to know whether it could be due to a software issue: Is it possible that it is false alarm, and how can I check? I installed Ubuntu 12.04 32bit and took care of alignment. I supposed Ubuntu set up with optimal settings for SSDs, how can I check that there was no mistake? • Is there other ways to do insert/update/delete on a remote oracle database?

  I asked a question recently concerning the speed of execution of insert/update/delete using JDBC driver in a remote machine, but the problem cannot be solved easily. I would like to ask, is there any other way to execute the insert/update/delete to the oracle? The current situation is this: the DB is on a seperate machine than the java program used to update the DB. I looked up the internet and found people suggesting using pure sql or pl/sql to do the update, is that possible? And do we need to operate the sql or pl/sql in a local machine? Because I have no knowledge about pl/sql, so I am not sure if we can create some kind of script and call it on a remote machine. Let say the situation is like this: the input data is on machine A, and the original java program are also on machine A, but the oracle is on machine B. is there any other approach other than JDBC?

• How can I upgrade from Ubuntu 9.10 to 11.10?

  We need to program in CUDA 5.0 which can be installed only on ubuntu 11.10 or 12.04. Our current version, 9.10, is no longer supported, so we chose to proceed with a clean installation. Since we have a shared workstation, we used clonezilla for cloning the system. However, booting from the LiveCD showed an unexpected error. We also tried to install 11.10 in an external HDD by partitioning it, but Gparted could not be installed, and terminated with the error "installArchives() failed" which we couldn't solve even after modifying the sources.list. Is there a way to proceed with this upgrade?

• How to batch remove spamming users and pages they created on MediaWiki?

  I'm trying to clean up a MediaWiki instance which has been subjected to spamming and vandalism for a period of time. The current status is that there are a large number of users which only created spam pages but typically not altered legitimate pages. And there is only < 10 users which I know are legitimate users and created a small number of legitimate pages. Abstractly, my idea of fixing the messy situation is to find the complete list of users that are not in that small set of legitimate users, and use RenameUser extension to rename them all to a Spammer user, and use Nuke extension to mass delete all pages it created. Any practical advice on how to proceed? Since there are hundreds of spammer users, how do I effectively rename them? It seems Renameuser extension does not support automated batch renaming of users by allowing users to be renamed with a list or file.

Current URL - http://www.domainname.com/MyApp/ What I need to make is to make it avaialble at - www.domainname.com/ So it is only going to host one main app and that needs to be displayed when we open www.domainname.com/ on browser. • Database for Ubuntu

  I am trying Ubuntu 12.04 booted from a DVD disk before I install it. I currently havwe windows 8 (which I hate) and I have a couple of Data base programs with my movies, hundreds of movies, in them. Is there a database available for Ubuntu that is compatible with Microsoft Database? There are too much data in the current database file for me to have to rewrite the program. So far, I love the Ubuntu 12.04. I have been able to access my microsoft works spreadsheet files and documents with no problem. And I like the thuderbird email and just about everything else about Ubuntu 12.04. I just need to be able to access my database files and to write lables and envelopes. Thanks. Toby J Paris, TN

• Diskless Workstations

  I want to run diskless booting with PXE. The gotchas at the end of the Diskless-Howto[1] is quite long. I am unsure how to get this done. Here are my current possible solutions: use debian live and not ubuntu use aufs [2] The How-To states "confirmed to work with Ubuntu 12.04.". But maybe I am doing something wrong, I don't think it works this way for several diskless clients sharing one nfsroot. What is the most painless way to get diskless workstations? • Will GMails Greasemoney API help me: composing and sending messages, adding a button to the compose view, listing and sending drafts [migrated]

  I want to create a Greasemonkey script for GMail and I've browsed through the GMail Greasemonkey 1.0 API documentation. I haven't fully understood what the API actually provides, which leads me to ask a few concrete questions. How will the API help if I want to: Add a button to the Compose view which executes some of my code. Compose and send a new message from scratch. List the current drafts. Pick a draft and send it. From what I can see it'll help me with 1 above, but I don't see any real interaction API parts which can help me with 2-4.
