• Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1 Certified on Solaris 11

  Oracle Solaris 11 was announced last week, and I'm pleased to also announce that Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1 is now certified on Oracle Solaris on SPARC (64-bit). This new operating system release represents a culmination of years of hard work by our Solaris engineering group.  It has a number of new and advanced features including simplified deployment and lifecycle management tools, built-in certified virtualization technologies, support on the latest generation SPARC chips, and more. New installations of the E-Business Suite R12 on this platform will require version 12.1.1 or higher and the latest Rapid Install startCD version 12.1.1.13.  For existing 12.1 installations, we have also certified an "in place" OS upgrade or the use of cloning to a target Solaris 11 system.   Need an excuse to log a few more hours playing Call of Duty or Medal of Honor? Scientists demonstrated improved vision in test subjects after daily doses of first-person shooter games. Scientists at McMaster University took subjects who, as the result of surgery correcting congenital cataracts, had less than 20/20 vision. Subjects played Medal of Honor for a total of 40 hours over the course of 4 weeks before having their vision retested. The results? The CBC reports: The participants found improvements in detail, perception of motion and in low contrast settings.   After hearing about some of the features in 12.10, I decided to upgrade my Ubuntu from 12.04 LTS to the newer 12.10. However, when I try to upgrade it, I start the update manager, like always, and I start the distro upgrade, just like I do every time there's a new version, but at the end of the "Setting new software channels" stage, it fails, saying: Could not calculate the upgrade An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. This can be caused by: Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. What should I do? I understand that I have some sort of "broken" package on my system, but how do I identify and remove the problem? Note: At the start of the "Setting new software channels" stage, I was presented with this: Third party sources disabled Some third party entries in your sources.list were disabled. You can re-enable them after the upgrade with the 'software-properties' tool or your package manager.

• Firefox clones for Ubuntu

  In Windows I use, beside the main Firefox installation, one or even two "Firefox clones" for different purposes (specifically oriented addons and configurations, light configuration without addons, configuration for a different user, etc). A clone of Firefox is a browser that is identical to Firefox except the name. (It may have more - but not less - features than FF and it must be installable beside Firefox, not on top/instead of it. So, a clone is not a replacement/exclusive alternative of FF: in the way Swiftfox is, taking all previous Firefox extensions and configuration.) For example, in Windows, Pale Moon, Cometbird and Wyzo are FF clones (but they do not have Linux support). Basically, Flock browser would also qualify, and it had support for Linux: but it was discontinued. What remains as closest to being a full clone is Seamonkey, has support for Linux, but it is not a complete clone (although it can use a lot of FF extensions): themes are not working, the interface is in general different and rather primitive. It has the merit of keeping the pace with FF 4+ (in contrast with Swiftweasel, for example.) Are such more browsers available in Ubuntu? (As for comments asking why I "really" need these clones, I am just used to doing that, I like two separate Firefox-like browsers: why pleasure, just like curiosity, would not be enough??)

• Did Microsoft designers got their butts kicked 3 years ago?

  This is something I've been wondering about for about a year now.  Microsoft has a history of creating very useful products, with lots of useful features.  But useful does not mean usable.  A lot of stuff coming out of Redmond the past 10 years don't really seem to have been well thought out from a user design point of view.  Lots of extra steps, lots of popup windows...very little innovative thinking going on about the user experience of these products.But about a year ago I started seeing changes in the new products coming out of Microsoft.  Windows 7 is a good example of a big change.  They really got their asses handed to them on Vista, so they had to make a change.  But it looks like this change in philosophy has bled over to other areas.  The new Office (2010) lineup has a lot of changes in it to make it way more usable. Given that big changes like this take about 3 years to go from start to actually shipping product, I'm curious what happened internally at Microsoft that really drove this change in product design.  I think that Microsoft got so focused on just adding new functionality for so long, they forgot about the little things that can really make or break a product.  Office 2010 is full of these little things that make it much nicer to use.  I just hope its not too late for them.

  I'm learning C# by programming a real monstrosity of an application for personal use. I'm used to working with SQL Server and just wrapping every query in a stored procedure but since this is not SQL Server I'm scratching my head on what would be the best for these SPARQL queries. Are there any better approaches to storing these queries using any special C# language features (or general, non C# specific, approaches) that I may not already know about?

Let me know which one of the following is your favorite article from memory lane. 2007 Convert Text to Numbers (Integer) – CAST and CONVERT If table column is VARCHAR and has all the numeric values in it, it can be retrieved as Integer using CAST or CONVERT function. List All Stored Procedure Modified in Last N Days If SQL Server suddenly start behaving in un-expectable behavior and if stored procedure were changed recently, following script can be used to check recently modified stored procedure. If a stored procedure was created but never modified afterwards modified date and create a date for that stored procedure are same. Count Duplicate Records – Rows Validate Field For DATE datatype using function ISDATE() We always checked DATETIME field for incorrect data type. One of the user input date as 30/2/2007. The date was sucessfully inserted in the temp table but while inserting from temp table to final table it crashed with error. We had now task to validate incorrect date value before we insert in final table. Jr. Developer asked me how can he do that? We check for incorrect data type (varchar, int, NULL) but this is incorrect date value. Regular expression works fine with them because of mm/dd/yyyy format. 2008 Find Space Used For Any Particular Table It is very simple to find out the space used by any table in the database. Authorized user can turn on or turn off advance settings. 2009 Standby Servers and Types of Standby Servers Standby Server is a type of server that can be brought online in a situation when Primary Server goes offline and application needs continuous (high) availability of the server. There is always a need to set up a mechanism where data and objects from primary server are moved to secondary (standby) server. BLOB – Pointer to Image, Image in Database, FILESTREAM Storage When it comes to storing images in database there are two common methods. I had previously blogged about the same subject on my visit to Toronto. With SQL Server 2008, we have a new method of FILESTREAM storage. However, the answer on when to use FILESTREAM and when to use other methods is still vague in community. 2010 Upper Case Shortcut SQL Server Management Studio I select the word and hit CTRL+SHIFT+U and it SSMS immediately changes the case of the selected word. Similar way if one want to convert cases to lower case, another short cut CTRL+SHIFT+L is also available. The Self Join – Inner Join and Outer Join Self Join has always been a noteworthy case. It is interesting to ask questions about self join in a room full of developers. We'll be talking about how we design and develop applications for global use, looking at the cultural factors, internationalization (I18n), localization (L10n) and language used for a start. We will also discuss how we study and work with real users so that our customers have applications that allow them to be productive regardless of where they are located in the world. In addition, we will inform you about any globally-related events we know about, and about product features, development frameworks, tools, information and relevant to our worldwide customers. Also, of course, we hope to hear from you, too. If you have anything you want to know about our global user experience, a localization you'd like, or cultural feature you think would be useful, then let us know.
